"She was like a candle in the wind. Unreliable."
Dude , I literally was about to comment this!
This was my imdb signature for years, back when they had forums (I miss the forums!)
I wonder why
Very Ayoade.
Literally the same comment on every single dark place video...
@@RedTail1-1 Thank you for your contribution, I found it extremely valuable and insightful, you should feel very proud of yourself.
Listen to the show with headphones. When they walk on the scene from the right. The sound comes from the left. It's so funny.
Plot twist: your headphones are on backwards
@@sarat6488 I genuinely thought that. They wasn't. Just another level of the genius.
JR watch ‘A Gun for George’ if you ain’t seen it,🤣🤣👌🏻
Oh man...I need to put my headphones on...😂👍
The third level is the audio commentary on the dvd which is still the best commentary ever put to anything.
you've just changed my life, thank you random youtube commenter
Yep. All done in character and an essential companion to “the visions” as the DVD calls them.
I need this! Must have!
Got mine from Amazon UK for just a few bucks. Hope you can play Region 2... Worth all the efforts.
I forgot about the commentaries! Ive had the dvd for years. Best get on it.
Intentionally bad acting is Richard Ayoade's biggest selling point. I suggest watching his interviews about the book he wrote. He deconstructs everything he touches. He's probably one of the most hilarious character actors I've ever seen.
It’s not bad acting it’s just more realistic acting. Look at it crowd and tell me you don’t know someone in real life who is just like Moss. Also Submarine is a great film
The book he wrote was shit though. Maybe he thought it was funny but it really missed the mark for me.
"I felt muscular and compact, like corned beef." Easily my favourite comedy of all time.
Retrodude watch ‘A Gun for George’ if you ain’t seen it,🤣🤣👌🏻
Tetsuo Shima Aaayy nice one! I have - it’s awesome 😁
Definitely in my top 5 Darkplace quotes
Every time I eat corned beef, I think of that quote.

You left out the best line from the slow motion sequence!
''We tried to keep the slow motion away from the dialogue as much as possible, but anything without dialogue was considered for slow motion.''
Great video, it's awesome to see the well deserved praise for this show
The Slow Motion bit is basically how I imagine how most Zack Snyder productions were made.
Explaining a joke usually kills a joke, but sometimes explaining the explaining of a joke is the joke.
...and bits of sick.
Lolz
And then a hell-beast ate them.
And Blood, Blood…Blood.
Garth Merenge doesn't explain jokes though. They believe what they did was great and their explanation why is the joke
From a Brit who watched this show when it came out nearly 20 years ago and periodically refound it via late night repeats and rare dvd's, it is so satisfying that americans have found this.
I love when Americans find niche British stuff and completely get it. This show is still pretty cult even in the UK, so I hope it finds a massive US audience.
Couple years later now, and I see it talked about more and more with each passing month.
It will..... and then they'll syndicate it for 100 episodes
Me and my friends discovered the mighty boosh and reference it constantly. I forget most things I've watched but old Gregg will be my last memory before I die.
@@nickberkawitz6451 my bf and I still say " Ever drank Bailey's from a boot?" every now and then
I have to watch this. "I'm one of the few people you'll meet who've written more books than they've read."
If you can appreciate lines like that then you really do have to watch it, that one actually went over my head the first few times because he never breaks character and it's all done with complete conviction
James Long I still quote this show and do impressions of the characters 14 years after watching it late on C4 for the first time. It’s a cult gem for sure.
I believe the entire series is on youtube
You have to watch this, and I don't say that lightly.
THIS video should be a prerequisite to watching Darkplace. I feel sorry for people who think the interview parts are real. They are so confused. 😂

Its the best export to come out of UK. We owe you more for this than The Office.
Dean Learner: "I never acted before... some would say I never acted DURING... but those people would be unkind." 😁 (might not be an exact quote, just going from memory)
Still a good quote overall.
You need to track down the DVD for the in character commentary tracks in which the characters spend the running time drinking beer and variously slandering all the other cast members. It adds a whole third level (following your analysis).
Man I forgot about the "I know writers who use subtext, and they're all cowards" line

...once
"The episodes were running up to... eight minutes under" This show is everything I love about self-aware British humor. Reminds me of Monty Python and the Holy Grail, which is very conscious of its own fictitious nature.
Funnily enough this exact same thing happened with inept Martial arts Movie Twin Dragon Encounter. Also made as a self-promotion vehicle for it's Mary Sue stars The McNamara Twins. Almost all fights are slowed down, but as it was done in post the 24fps they're working with gives jittery as hell results to the point that it's hard to know who hit who. To lengthen the film further, the very same fight scenes are played over the end credits but in normal speed, so finally you can see what's going on.
"So now sit back on your chair, sofa, or beanbag if that's how you choose to live your life."
"I'm one of the few people you'll meet who's written more books than he's read" is a fantastic line and one I've been quoting ever since I first saw the series.
Hi, Steven King
Apparently Garth's only ever read three books.
Finally, a film RUclipsr has acknowledged this great piece of art. The universe is just a little bit more stable.
This is the most significant piece of video programming since Quantum Leap. And I do not say that lightly.
I see what you did there!
Finally got to watch this show recently. Matt Berry shooting a gun at a floating iron, only to have the gun turn on him so he pulls out another gun to shoot the first gun had me in fucking stitches.
Then his dubbed voice as he runs away “Filing cabinet!”
Man, this series is a hidden gem even for British TV. They did a "commentary" for the DVD called Horrificata Illuminata, which is essentially Holness, Ayoade and Berry improving in character for 20 mins. It's arguably better than the actual show (it's on youtube in it's entirety)
Not meaning to be that obnoxious hipster or anything, but I’m so glad to see someone touting the brilliance of Darkplace. I watched it in 2004 on channel 4 here in the UK, late on Thursdays (I think..?). So, so good, and it’s stood the test of time.
It was a cult hit that went mostly unnoticed even here, until around 2007 ish when it was released on dvd. And even then, it’s not got that wide an audience.
If you haven’t already, make sure to check out ‘Man to Man with Dean Learner’. Made by same people, with Garth as a cameo in one episode.
(Also - if you haven’t already, make sure you watch the DVD extras to darkplace. You’re right to say that the modern context makes this show brilliant. Precisely because that’s true, you need to watch the 40+ minutes of modern context interviews, all extra to what you’ve seen in the show. All fantastic.)
Man to man filmed at Dean Learner flat was very funny.
LOL! Same here. I didn't want to be the obnoxious hipster on this either. I'm glad you posted before me. :)
We had it on Adult Swim. Once you "get it", it's a delight.
Bullshit, British surreal ironic sarcastic weird comedy is the British standard. Nothing hipster about it, it's just normal TV to a true British person!
My recent fave is The Mighty Boosh. British tv is full of high standard world ironic comedy. Been watching it all since a kid.
It what defines you to be British in a way...... My first exposure as a kid being the goodies and monty Python !!! They were trippy as fuck !!!
Great video... you guys did a fantastic job paying hommage to the brilliance of Darkplace... that's French for homage
"You and he were buddies weren't you" 🤣
But sometimes we'd have punch ups...
Need I say more? Need I say more.
There's something loveable about Richard Ayoade's moustache.
Richard ayoade is loveable in general
I mean have you seen the it crowd
His style is an eclectic mix. Some of it comes from 20s golf. Some of it comes from Al Capone. Some of it comes from the future. And some of it comes from fiefal landlords.
I think GMDP is peak Ayoade.
@@daltonriser1125 Now I have! All of it twice, it’s incredible to come back to this after seeing a proper show with precisely as much insanity. I love it so much.
I loved Garth Marenghi’s Dark Place. The aesthetic alone is exquisite.
I think my favourite piece of Garth arrogance is how proud he is of doing "an AIDS episode" only to have his character's response to the metaphor-AIDS to be utterly devoid of empathy: kill one sufferer and castrate the other.
"All scenes without dialogue were considered for slow motion" what an amazing show.
I remember feeling like it was an actual 80s showing even though knowing it really wasn't. Like a fever dream.
This went totally under the radar in the UK. I remember at the time being amazed it wasn't nominated for a comedy award. Absolutely one of my favourite shows with so many quotable lines. 'Don't drink that, look it's bright green' being just one of many favourites.
As somebody else has mentioned, well worth getting the dvd because the audio commentaries are all done in character and add another layer to the comedy.
Darkplace is like the television equivalent of those video-games that have you have to play through multiple times in order to unlock secret cutscenes and endings.
Dean Learners (Ayoade) character also doesn't Blink when powering thru the dialogue of his close-up monologues, which is a subtle but great detail that adds so much to the performance of someone who "can't act".
If you can get it I’d recommend the Darkplace DVD. You get an additional layer from the in-character commentary on the episodes.
"I'm one of the few writers who has written more books than they've read."
I definitely need to watch this.
My favourite thing about this series is the voice-overs by the "actors" on the DVD commentary. Brilliantly meta.
"He whisked off her shoes and panties in one movement, wild like an enraged shark."
- A skill I *must* learn.
"We were young, we were physically fit, and we were challenging logic"
I just realised EVERYTHING Garth Marenghi says could be a Trump quote... it would make a killer drinking game of "who said it" ... literally everything from "I am one of the few people you ll meet who has written more books than he's read" to "Listen to me, I am not prejudiced, that's what I am saying, I am not prejudiced".
" im the president of the USA "
who said it?
@@ronniejdio9411 Garth, obviously! How about some harder ones?
Even so, Marenghi has more class than you know who...
Im glad that Darkplace is still getting shown some love. I'd also strongly recommend Brass Eye/ The Day Today if anybody is after hilarious UK comedy.
Great reflection on GMDP. I watched it when it aired and while I got the parody thing, wasn't sure about Richard Ayoade's 'deliberately' bad acting for the first episode or two. I mean, he needed to be good to be that bad, AND convincing. And a mention for Alice Lowe - spectacularly good in this, as she is in everything I've seen her in.
This show is beautiful. You say how much you get to know the characters - It’s because it’s like a well written movie (One they sadly never made a sequel to)
“I could wear my hat level but I’m not a potato farmer”
It's a sad day for Dean... when I have to say...
"Get a cab love, it's not happening."
I'd like to see a movie within a movie within the movie within a movie within a movie. It will be about a found footage of a documentary of a behind the scenes of a remake of a movie adaptation of a biography about writer who wrote about another writer who wrote a story about some poet reciting a myth about the origin of the first storyteller.
Zedfinite Hollywood will be calling you very soon, son.
Well, The Grand Budapest Hotel has three or four nested framing devices...
Nolan are you reading this?
Sounds like you're talking about Synecdoche, New York.
Cloud Atlas. The thing you're asking for is the 2004 novel Cloud Atlas, which was conveniently adapted into the 2012 film Cloud Atlas.
This was amazing. Wonderful actual. Such a fantastic show, loving dissected by an obvious fan.
Thanks for that mate.
Glad to see this show getting some much deserved attention these days. Thanks for posting and certainly sharing this with others who have never heard of the show.
Dude thanks for letting me in on this!
So happy seeing more people give this classic the attention it deserves. My fave 6 episodes of anything ever! :-)
"Wow, this video essay was brilliant!!! It BROKE the mould!!! which is a turn of phrase to mean that it's different from the rest!
Patrick, you're a genius, I tell you. You're smarter than Einstein who was very smart but saying that makes you even smarterer!
there's no one who can match up to your brilliance and anyone who doubts you should get a real talking to!!!"

Smarterer? Realsy?
I believe you meant to say smarmierer.
the saying 'broke the mould' actually comes from welsh where people only ate mould they could scrape off of caves and floors an that or whatever.
A video about making a video about a show about making a show... Good one.
It's just about past the meta event horizon.
I saw Matthew Holness' Garth Marenghi's Terrortime tour last night (it was amazing) so came back to watch this as i'm in a Darkplace mood. 3:28 - "This was because she was *bleeding* on it" made me snort so hard my nose hurts.
Definitely going to check this out, glad you've brought forward something so obscure!
And American Vandal was incredible, a definite great parody.
I always think Spaced is my favourite comedy show, then somebody mentions Darkplace and I kick myself for being so stupid. Great video, as usual. You consistently pinpoint what makes a movie/show/creator work (or not work).
Thank you so much for alerting me to the existence of this extraordinary series!
To a bunch of stoners back in 2005, this was god. still amazing (sober). Almost every line is comedy gold.
I been on the fence about it for a while, but this made me finally decide to watch American Vandal
The Rocker X I finally watched it last week, didn’t regret it
Some additional content to the Marenghi-verse. Dean Learner’s Talk Show “Man to Man with Dean Learner” and the audiobook of Garth Marenghi’s “Terror Tome”
Yessss so pleased you did this! I adore darkplace!
THANK YOU. When Sci-Fi Channel aired this, I instantly fell in love. I own a bootleg of this and the spin-off Dean Learner show, but I hope it gets an American release
I love that within the first minute of the first show they're quoting Shakespeare. Also, the first child he visits in the show isn't even sick, it's his dad.
I certainly didn't expect this small amazing absurd show to be subject to your RUclips channel. Thank you!
DUUUUDE I gotta say you are one of my favorite film analysts on youtube and Garth Marenghi's dark place is one of my favorite pieces of absurdist satire ever created. To this day criminally underlooked. This video is an intersection of two of my favorite things
The real killer twist is that Matthew Holness also wrote, directed (but did not star in) the recently released movie "Possum" which is an amazingly good horror movie! I suppose that critical eye that could pick out what is bad in the genre was also filing away what is great in the genre for later use?
I watched this when I was 15. Hanging out with my friends, we were able to quote entire scenes of this show (with voices, of course).
Your writing is incredibly smart, I really enjoy your content, keep it up!
Many have attempted the style but nobody nailed it like DarkPlace.
Did you ever watch Nathan Barley? Similar team of people. 6 Episodes and it ends. Elements of it have dated, but other elements are more relevant then ever. You may like it.
Nathan Barley is one of the best!
Keep it foolish!
A night down the pub with your mates and it's fkin mental. A move from the pub to the club for some awesome sounds! Chopping the chalk out on the cistern, snorting it up and fking the system! We are Trashbat, we are a 9/11 of the mind!
the intro when garth dives with a baby infront of an exploding ambulance is funny every single time
love seeing this, I caught the show late on TV about 10 years ago and had no idea what I was watching but fell in love, had a lot of people think I'm crazy when showing them it, the british style humour doesn't always work for everyone but I love it. Great video guys!!
So glad (and surprised) Marenghi is getting attention internationally! Just a masterpiece of tiny details.
It makes me so happy to see this show appreciated!
There is a third level: the in-character dvd commentary of the entire series done as "Garth, Dean, and Todd" done entirely from the point of view of the characters 10 years after the show aired.
I really loved the American Vandal reference. It was really clear to me watching that show that the writers figured out how much fun they could have with the nested perspectives, especially in season 2. And the jokes by the kids making the doc were easily some of the most funny in the whole show since they so perfectly articulate what being in high school is like.
Great explication of a great show.
I'm pretty sure Dean Learner also got his own talkshow, which is a nice little bonus.
"Liz, hide your shame...", thanks for making a video about one of my favourite series
Thank you for introducing me to this. I don't know how I've missed it so long.
Great video, love the framing device.
The DVD commentary also adds another layer to the show. It's awesome.
Hey man. I just wanted to thank you for turning me on to this show. I had a really rough night and morning and this is just what I needed to take me mind off of everything. I just finished watching the first episode. It was so damn good. Kinda reminds of Black Dynamite slightly.
I like that you use a meta framing device in your video essay about a show with that meta framing device and bookend your essay with a reference to Community, probably one of the most meta tv series I’ve seen.
Im so happy you are covering this show
Great video! Garth Marenghi's Darkplace is easily in my top five favorite British comedies!
Just want to say thanks for you being you Patrick. I adore your videos and if it wasn’t for you I would’ve missed out on the incredible ride MI6 was. Love your style and your perspective so keep doing you and I’ll keep tuning in.
This is a great series!
You should check out the old Comedy Central TV show Dog Bites Man. It is a mockumentary about a local TV news crew, but they actually go out to real events and interview real people who do not know it is not a real news crew, Borat-style.
Not to be confused with the very dark comedy 'man bites dog', the documentary team who follow a serial killer.
The whole idea of a play within a play as a metaphor for the vanity of human conceptions is a pretty old trope (it is in Hamlet), but yes, this show took it to another level.
Great job again, Patrick and crew!
If I may recommend another underseen, or almost not even heard of, show that’s incredibly funny, and similar to Darkplace, watch Snuff Box. Matt Berry and Rich Fulcher are the leads, and they’re hysterical!
It’s also 6 episodes, so it’s an easy watch
"I punched one of the child actors"
So I only just discovered GM's The Darkplace, and am enjoying it wildly. I was shocked I hadn't seen some coverage before on any of the many media crit and news channels to which I'm subscribed. But then, a quick search revealed I was mistaken, and I found this! And despite sitting thru a pretty long video about the 1960's Batman movie already today, I watched enthusiastically and loved every minute. 10/10
Patrick grew up in darkplace
MAN, If there's is one good thing about your videos It's the unpredictability of what's your next shot gonna be! keep up
I love the Kaptain Kristian- esque background music.
Dude too funny. I wanna pace comedy in my videos, but man you kill it. So jelly. LOVE the content
Great show, need to watch it again sometime soon.
Getting the DVD is essential, because not only are the commentary tracks and copious extras hilarious, there's a whole third layer of parody and narrative in them. This ultimately pays off in the sequel/spin-off series where we really get to see that the real monster in the story is Dean!
ooh.. what's the name of the sequel series? of additional material, I've only heard of the two novels (TerrorTome, Incarcerat)
I've only seen one episode of the show when I visited my brother in the UK and I really enjoyed it, one of my favourite gags was when Thornton Reed (Dean Learner) answered the phone saying Hi, bye and hang up as soon as he answered.
I love this series so much and I love your videos. My day is made
