- I'm back at Josh's house today and we are laying some TifTuf Bermuda (Couch) Turf so that he finally has a lawn! Today I talk about how to lay turf and why we chose this grass type.

Dang Ben, how many brothers have you got - there’s a new one each episode 😂 Tif is just awesome, loves me a good couch lawn
Have 3 bros haha
@@LawnTips lol my mum is one of 16 so yeah lol
@@southaussiegarbo2054 wow your grandmother was basically always pregnant
@@Anon.G lol they wanted twins they never got.
You music Choice is deep , taking lawn tips to new levels! 👍😛
Haha 😂
I do like your videos they are great 👍
Three greenskeepers in the family who spend their free time maintaining lawn. Epic.
Laying turf in a white polo = brave.
Guy around the corner from me left his Tiftuf on the pallets for 2-3 and it came back just fine. It's incredible stuff.
Love watching this after a long day of laying turf 😝😝
Bloody hell 2 years ago? Time flies
I’d reckon! Crazy isn’t it
Something very satisfying about laying down sod. Looks great and can't wait to see the first mow :)
Cicada Ambient Mix :P
😂
"Today is turf laying day".. after around of golf in my White top :) Sweet as nuts. Longing for some nice weather
Thank you Ben. For all you do
Thanks for watching legend 🤙🏼
@@LawnTips try to never miss an episode.
Woot woot!! Great video. It’s pretty cool seeing the similarities between our turf here in The Rocket City USA, Huntsville Alabama. And where you’re at. First time I heard you say “whipper snip the couch” I bout fell over 😂
😂😂
Thanks for watching legend!
Those Cicadas are insane!
Lay that couch boi! 😂
I was wondering what was up with Josh's KBG. But living here in hot and dry Texas I can tell you that he will love the Bermuda. That couch can really take a pounding and just bounce right back!
Exactly man, couch is a lot better suited to his situation!
Our Tif Tuf is looking mint now Ben thanks to you and your friendly advice over email. Up to week 6 but it was pretty established at week 3. I gave it a bit of Seasol the first few weeks to get the roots going and it had it's first mow the other day. Mowing twice a week now with a cylinder mower.
Only thing is, theres a few high and low spots everywhere - which is strange because it was dead flat before we laid it. be good to see something to address that for a new lawn in a future vid. Im cutting at the highest height I can go and it scalps a little bit in a few spots. I'd like to drop it down but not sure i can while its scalping like that.
When we have watering restrictions here, they still allow you to run your system if you are testing it to ensure it's efficient - so I just test my system, often. 😂
Lol.
Should test it every 3 days or so, making sure any sprinkler heads aren't knocked loose.
You definitely don’t have water restrictions there old man. The lakes there are crazy!!
@@LawnTips i herd nsw now jusy removed water restrictions for whole of nsw
Not in Orange man
Awesome job. Sod is so satisfying. Sorry I’m so late to this vid!
We mostly lay rye or fescue down here in tas, but we find bread knives work an absolute treat for cutting turf! Especially along a timber edge and around popups 👌🏼
Breadknifes wouldn’t work too well with TifTuf. Crazy rhizomes in the turf!
Ahh true!
We're doing this exact same thing next week at my new place! I'm gonna need you to hop a plane and get over here.
I can’t even get out of the country haha. Would love to help out bro 🤙🏼
@@LawnTips Doing the same on the 15-16. An extra hand would not have gone astray but too late to get you through MIQ now :(
@@LawnTips try harder!
G'day mate, I was wondering how Josh's lawn was going as I hadn't heard much lately.
Love the vid mate, keep up the good work. 👍🏼 😎. ⛳️
Thanks my man! 🤙🏼
I’m sure it’s a copyright thing but would’ve been epic to have the Tetris music going 😂
Haha imagine
I laid tiftuf at mine 3 days ago from lawn solutions aswell. Pretty keen on the updates on this and its fertiliser schedule to see if im falling behind or on par with your progress.
Laying sod with a white shirt on? Brave man!
Love the vids as usual mate! I've got a similar sized backyard and been thinking about doing turf because we have dogs and would be wild trying to seed it. What sort of cost was Josh up for for that sized yard?
Fantastic mate👍🏼
At our golf course we have cicadas every once in a while. It’s such a loud noise
man being a greenskeeper must pay well!
What really made me laugh is that you guys are just like us in the UK...... so what you want is about 100mm in depth and we really only have about an inch 🤣🤣 we know how to rock with imperial and metric all at the same time 👍🏽😂
About to do the same to my Kentucky blue, no good down the peninsula in Vic, no restrictions but watering morning and night wasn’t enough, seeded maybe 2 months ago and only dregs left 😞
Dang it mate!!
A lot of wind which just sucks it dry, oh well try again!
Bummer man, heat and wind plus a newish lawn isn’t a good mix!
Damn Tommy, so you reckon Kentucky is a waste of time or just needs more love. I am thinking of seeding at my place Pakenham area and I know it’s summer too.
@@addiejonez if you going to try, I’d wait until the end of summer, main problem with my lawn is if gets son most of the day, shady spots ok, but the rest is cooked, and being 5 min from Port Phillip Bay we have a lot of wind which doesn’t help! Just try to keep the soil wet until your seed has sprouted, then continue to water at least 2 times a day.. good luck!
Start of the video I seen that white Nike golf shirt and I thought. He won’t wear that while laying that turf will he? Lol into the old shirt pile she goes,
😂
Do you have any more clips on soil prep? We are just about ready to lay but have some very uneven ground and weeds growing through. The previous turf was all removed by hand. We have been spraying weed killer over the ground to kill off any remaining grass roots and weeds. The plan now is to lay 100mm sandy loam, level/roll etc and then lay tiff tuff. My only concern is if we don't kill off any remaining grass roots or weeds and they grow through the new lawn.
Shame you didn’t have some pallet forks for the bobcat, it would have saved a lot of work!
That would have been so handy!
@@LawnTips ummmmm you could of used the bucket lol
The bobcat turning constantly just wrecks the flat surface... where as if he had the forks he could put the pallet in a better location and not constantly ride over the screed
@@FrogwoodRecords the kind of pallet used is direct turf rolls it dosent have any actual pallet spots
All good farmer, I’m talking about the bobcats tyres wrecking the screed by taking the rolls in the bucket constantly
Your the best RUclips person ever
Big call haha
The dog loves the new grass. Has he/she ripped any up yet?
Nah bit of an older dog which is good!
Hey Ben. I laid Kikuyu turf in Tamworth about 2 weeks ago. How long should I be running a sprinkler for? Half an hour 3 times a day? I use an impact sprinkler. 33 degrees average.
what kind of trees do you have on the fence line at the end of the video
Hey Ben, love your videos and just wondering I was looking at seeding glass on a rural property of mine and just wondering what type of grass would be best for very minimal maintenance
Buffalo
Hey mate would love an update on the couch!
Do you recommend to roll the ground before laying to turf to make sure the ground is smooth and level?
Whats better Queensland blue couch or tif tuf bermuda really undecided 🤔
Got to love TifTuf.
What herbicide would you recommend only from Bunnings, that I can use on my Perennial Rye grass? Can I use "Amgrow" winter grass? Thanks ben.
Something bindi killer should be sweet for rye man 👌🏽
You can technically use amgrow wintergrass killer. It’s not registered for rye though.
Cheers Ben!!
Laid 100m of tiff tuff few weeks ago and is looking good, starting to get some wild grass coming through what would you recommend to use with tiff tuff to kill it off?
Asking for a mate, how soon can you put down granule fert on newly laid lawn? And is it safe to apply segdegammer on them as well? My mate has lots of nutgrass in the span of 2 weeks
Hows TifTuf go when you gotta scarify or scalp it to remove the dead stuff? Great vid once again
Very good man, I did it today at home, will have a vid out (i have a little patch of tiftuf)
Will this stay green all year round mate ? I think you suggested zoysia to me in the past. Cheers
Last lawn I used a starter fert from Bunnings before the lawn went down. Laying buff this weekend actually. Bit scared to use a non-starter fert. Is it ok to use my Lawn Pride Maintain fert?
Laying turf is hard work hey lol, medic!!!!!!
It's called laying sod
@@yacanbenisrael6414 not in Australia bro.
Does it matter if you cut with the joins or against them on the first mow? I’m about a week away from my new lawns first mow.
Mint
Hello mate
Do you know a selective herbicide that will kill couch in Kentucky blue?
I have a nice recently seaded kb and it is getting over taken by couch!
Those cicadas are deafening. I try to avoid Orange when there out. Headache for days
They are so loud aren’t they!!
Is you old man a green keeper too?
Nah he’s not
He owns the golf club 😂😂😂
Hey
Yo
Hi Ben,
Being tif tuff does it bounce back if it has been pallet burnt? I may or may not have acquired some pallet burnt tif tuff lol. Great vids mate really need to get around to trying some of your stuff.
Yeah it sure does. Josh’s got a bit of burn out the back and it’s already started to root down. Luckily tiftuf is pretty hardy stuff!
@@LawnTips 'Luckily tiftuf is pretty tough stuff!' TFIFY
First thing I thought, wow his got some balls white shirt and easy 8-10 pallets to lay hahaha. RIP white shirt
😂
Be honest, how bad did you hurt after that?? Well done!
Haha I slept very well that night.
The locusts... holy cow.
Last Aussie 😁
How long do you have to wait if you want to reseed your lawn after you sprayed the old lawn with roundup?
Technically you can do it the next day 👍🏽 roundup doesn’t stick in the soil and I’ve seeded the day after in the past with no issues.
@@LawnTips Super. Thank you very much.
What was the song you use at the beginning when laying turf?
At the start or mid way? The first song is get “get through the night by killrude”
The second is “fire away by duplex heart”
After watching this i can see everything our landscaper didn't do.
Plus underestimated and ran short and used a different turf to finish
Some cowboys out there it seem
Ah that’s a bummer man!!
Hey Ben you been sun baking your looking nice and brown
If you use washed fine sand afterwards as top dress it fills in all the little join lines making it look way better
The way you just seemingly knock out these absolutely massive projects is amazing! That’s hard work that you make look like a piece of cake lol
haha thanks mate, wish it was as easy as it looks on camera.
Tiftuf- originated by a world leading turf breeder at the University of Georgia. The “tif” comes from the town Tifton, Georgia USA. Go Dawgs.
This comment reminds me of “my big fat Greek wedding” tiff tuff. The tiff is Greek for “argument”. Tuff is Greek for “hard rock” so in Greek words the tiff tuff is don’t argue with the hard rock.
How many m2 of tiftuff?
385m2 👌🏽
@@LawnTips thats a big effort well done. Looked awesome
Whats the songs name at 6:05?
I was the first like
Is it just me or have turf rolls got heavier over the years?
I’m probably just weak haha
RIP to the white shirt
Why didn't you use nature's soil wetter from plant doctor?
I’ve found from testing it compared to other wetters it’s not that great unfortunately
@@LawnTips oh really. Do you have a recommendation instead?
@@LawnTips yo mate, what up. I need a good soil wetter badly to help break up some compacted areas. I'm using your plant doctor recommended kit and have used more of the nature's soil wetter, looking to buy some more or something else - do you have a soil wetter recommendation?
5th I think.
Nope. 6th....
First
Dude my ears 👂🏻🩸😜
What’s the point of the turf cutter ??
The bobcat with the blade will do the same job if not better.
Could because no need for underlay but it’s an extra equipment hire needed for the job.
How much is lawn solutions going to help you guys out?
Fund the entire turf drop off or a partial amount?
You guys have spent a lot of mega hours on this yard removing trees , irrigation, seeding , ect...
Hope it all comes up good.
Please don’t be sell out and promote a company’s grass just because gave it you for free😢
I have lawn solutions products but I would rather pay for it so I can give an honest review as I have brought both buffalo and sir grange zoysia , which I have had mixed results regarding getting kikuyu with the turf in delivery .
Very annoying !
No smoke and mirrors please.
Your brother has definitely put in the hard yards for this lawn, I hope it turns out awesome!
Cheers for the video’s on this property 👍
what did ya do with that shirt 🤣
Bleached it boi
White polo was a poor choice
Lol... I can teach you things. I have laid sod for ten years by hand
You stand ontop of a skid of eighty 5x2 foot small rolls and hand bomb them in place (you can toss them in a certain way that they unroll).
Start your stagger first of course
Bruz... probably down an inch is atleast 250mm 😂🤣
25mm is an inch 😉
And I thought birds chirping and talking to one another was annoying. I'd take that over cicadas any day. Wow are those loud and annoying.
Bluegrass was the dumbest idea ever, the grass that needs the most water per week.
I can even lay grass better then that
My wife shook her head when she saw what top you were wearing...
Mate TifTuf is insane and I reckon will establish fine with what Josh has there with no issues at all. I had compacted soil out the front that was covered by gravel. I scraped "some" of the gravel back, chucked two excess rolls out there as a test, watered it three times with a hose in four weeks, gave it seasol once and it STILL established. TifTuf is so next level it's not funny. Don't get me wrong, the Lawn Tips turf establishment plan worked a TREAT out the back and the grass established faster and was way more lush, but the front patch was only a week behind it in establishment and still survived the frosts we got four weeks after I laid it. Now I have to turf the rest to match my silly 2m patch lol
Perfect choice for Josh's yard - super keen to see how it turns out! Great vid like always Benno 🤙🏻
Edit: I did this in Canberra's cold autumn. Obviously if you're turfing in Summer you need to water it a ton.
Bro! Smash a low pass filter on that audio ffs hahahhha!
Still watched it even though my ears are bleeding lmao
You love it
Which carton of beer did Josh get you for that effort? 🍻
Can you do a video on the plant doctor lawn ferts?
G'day everyone, is there is benefit of TifTuf to Sir Walter? I have just ordered about 100m of Sir Walter (in Melbourne) and not to sure if I have made the right decision. Cheers
I just bought this from turf solutions and they told me don’t bother with turf underlay sand and wetter was fine? It arrives next week so should I put underlay in or not?
Is that a bunch of crickets in the background? Or birds? Lol
You really shouldnt waslk on freshly laid turf, you should lay a plank on it and walk on that.
the cicadas in this video audio is fucking mental haha
Did you till your dirt or just put top soil and then the sod?
been trying to buy tiftuf every week for 3 months now and they always say the growers have none available :-/
That's coz it doesn't really grow during the cooler months.
I’ve heard they are low on supply as well! Not fun
Why put this down and not plant seed seems like your real gd at that?
That's a bummer about his KBG but that bermuda is gonna look awesome!
Thanks for the video, I am in a Zone 9a so summers 95 to 105 with fun weekends of 105 to 115, relative humidity around 33%, I've changed my mind and now I will put in Tif Tub, since my rear yard gets shade with a 6 hour blast of full sun. That is a big job. Well done
Following! Put my tiftuf down on the 1st of Dec, only about 35m though. Been low to mid 20s here in melbourne so i have been putting down about 2.5cm (bout an hour maybe a little more) of water twice a day otherwise it seems dry. North facing and basically zero shade. Also because the underlay isnt huge - about 5cm of fine screened compost and 2.5cm of sandy loam on top of hard clay base. Keen to see the comparison between time for the roots to estabilish etc
Hi! I layed down TIf Tuf Bermuda here in San Antonio TX in March. I still has some spots that didnt take...not sure why. Otherwise it looks great. Why do you call it couch? do you pronounce it like the thing you sit on in your living room?
Hey Ben,
Just laid TifTuf 2 weeks ago and it’s is looking good apart from a few yellow patches.
Was told not to fertilise after laying as it doesn’t need it but noticed you did. Would hitting those patches with some fert help out.
Great vid mate, looking forward to watching the progress of this lawn 🍻
