People in the 1500s were afraid of bathing in water because they believed it made them susceptible to the bubonic plague, and would use a dry cloth to remove dead skin, oils, and debris from their body, and run a wooden comb through their hair to do the same. It’s a hair care trend right now to use a wooden comb on days you don’t wash your hair to spread your sebum from your scalp to your ends. I actually have been using a boars hair brush to do the same thing since 2015 when I learned it’s common in the African American community to use boars hair brushes, especially African American men, when I was in cosmetology school, and I can confirm it works well. Boars hair brushes are vegetarian, btw, which I was very glad to learn.

Chemist chiming in! The "four cold seeds" is a reference to the seeds commonly used because of their "cold" humours.--melon, gourd, purslane, and quince. A "vapor bath" is steaming, not boiling. Steaming will break down the material locking the oils in place as well as making the oils more liquid without contaminating them with the water-soluble proteins and starches.
At the end of that four hours, the product you squeeze out of the bag will be the seed oils mixed with the oils from the beef and pork. That blend of oils is being mixed with the bees wax to harden it and allow it to become a cream.
I've spent over two decades in pharma and labs. If you ever want to go over a receipt like this and compare it to the chemistry of a modern equivalent, I'd be happy to help. Have a blessed new year!

About the deodorant, it's called Aluminum Chlorohydrate. You shouldn't apply it directly after a shower, bath or shaving. I think because your pores are dilated and you should wait until they close somewhat. That was a guess, but the warning of not using after those actions is legit.

In regards to TNR cats, they're typically marked with an eartip before being placed back out. This is to prevent the same cats being caught and brought in for neutering. It's likely he did have a home and either ran off or just wasn't missed or the family had given up looking for him. He was probably also neutered very early in life, hence his smaller size. He's so sweet, BTW. I love kitties! 💕

The vet said it was a girl and told her when to bring it back to have her spayed. Joyce named her Misty because of her light gray color. At 6 months she took her back and had "her" neutered instead. And then she changed his named to Mister. So the vet himself messed that one up. Lol

I thought I was the only person who used the term “sink bath” until I heard Justine say it! have a central line in my chest that I can only disconnect once a week to take a “real shower.” Every other day I take, what I call, a sink bath. I have an ex boyfriend who used to berate me about this. He’d always go on and on about how unsanitary it was. Even when I explained that taking a real shower with a central line causes infection, even sepsis, which I’ve almost died from in the past, he’d say my doctors were wrong. Nothing will ever change the mind of a narcissistic, know it all, like him, but I was so happy when I found all the historical evidence that people existed by primarily bathing in a sink for hundreds of years. If it were unsanitary, everyone would have become unhealthy and sickly, which means women wouldn’t have been able to carry babies, which means humanity would have died out. 😊

RE: the catch & release of cats,
Idk that was a thing until recently. My (big city dwelling) sister took a cat to the vet that looked like it was missing an eye. They took her info even though she told them the cat wasn't hers and a week or so later showed up at her door with the cat who had healed from the eye surgery, been spayed/neutered (idk if it was a boy or girl) and then let it go on her porch. The animal control person said they do that now because the animals are usually familiar with a specific area, have people that feed them, are socialized with other cats (and often dogs and wild animals) and KEEP THE RODENT POPULATION at bay. 😲
Seems like they've learned from what happened in NYC some years back! 😏

In the 19th century, "la guignolée" was practiced on December 31. The "ignoleux" are received with a snack and collect donations (food, clothing, firewood) for the needy. It was a happy event. Today, in Québec, "la guignolée" takes place in the first half of December. Money is collected at a designated location and date depending on the city. Food is collecte from mid-November in schools, work sites and grocery stores. The last time i saw "ignoleux" passing by the houses was towards the end of 1970 beginning 1980. Happy New Year Justine and Ron!

On the series Bridgerton, portraying the early 1800s, they showed the small wagons backing up to the ocean edge and the ladies changed into swimming attire covered pretty much head to toe. They had attendants to help them in the water. The men simply went further down the shoreline where they were mostly out of the view of the ladies and swam naked.

I know Victoria obviously takes place in the Victorian Era, but as Justine said, they were actually even more modest then. It was forbidden for men and women to “sea bathe” together. For anyone interested, these wagons were called Bathing Machines.

Hi. I'm French from Louisiana and I've never heard of "La Guiannee" , however, in the Cajun part of Louisiana, we celebrate Mardi Gras. It is a catholic-based French tradition which takes place 40 days before Easter, during Lent, and the whole idea of Mardi Gras Is that the Catholics are going to be giving up something sacrificing something for Lent, so they go out in the early morning on the eve of the first day of Lent and They wear costumes such as the jester, a clown, it's not associated with the demonic stuff of Halloween There are no witches or warlocks or demons devils whatever. The captain of the Mardi Gras goes on ahead to the first house and ask if they could dance and play Cajun music in return for ingredients such as chicken sausage tasso or rice or roux, to make gumbo that night, when they return to town. The French Cajun song says that they come once a year to ask for charity,
The Mardi Gras come from all around the corn fields, etc. The writers would normally make a full circle around the city going from house to house farm to farm on the outskirts of town only. I am from Mamou, Louisiana, but I now live in North Carolina.
For the Mamou Mardi Gras, My cousin played the triangular instrument I don't know I guess it's just called the triangle, and someone sang in French the Mardi Gras song. Our heritage goes back 300 years our traditions are straight from France and I was told by a Parisian Frenchman, for decades ago, that I used a few words when I spoke, that were used 300 years ago. He said that it was very pleasing to hear these words because it confirmed that we were true Parisian French lineage. I did my DNA test and I'm 78% French, which in this day and age is a very high percentage. I really love watching y'all's videos they're so interesting. I'm uncertain about where the term la Guiannee comes from but I'm interested now and will have to research it. I belong to a French group that is both Cajun French and French people from France and Canada; I have asked about Mardi Gras and they said that Mardi Gras is still practiced every year. They still keep the traditions.

Happy New Year you two! Thanks for the Christmas card! Interesting and informative videos. I've been wanting to find dry shampoo that actually works cause my hair is so oily but don't want it to powdery either. May try it though. 😊

I think a steeped tea bag of rosemary, cooled and applied to the face would be good because it is an anti-inflammatory, but also an antibacterial. You can also use turmeric or vinegar. Witch hazel is also good. A little olive oil would be good, as well.

I’m a very new follower but I love the vibe in both your channels! I’ve always loved historical stuff and this time period is fascinating, especially because you talk so well about it. Anyway I love the food videos but I really like the fashion and other stuff too.

This exact thing happened to me in September! I found my black cat at a camp ground, it had a pink collar and what seemed to have no balls, tiny and super affectionate. I took her to get shots and spayed and they called me and said they can't spay her because he's already neutered lol so Astrid, now Arthur is our forever cat and I can't believe he's a boy...I've never seen a neutered male that you cant see ANY remnants of testicles..all my previous boys were neutered but you could still see where they'd been.

A period bench vise might be the same as today's without all of the paint. Or even made out of wood. I'd just use a used metal bench vise and go with that.

Happy New Year 2023 Justine, Ron, Mish Mish, Alfred, & Chickens! I used to volunteer w/an independent animal rescue group here in So. CA where I live. The program you spoke of is commonly referred to, worldwide, as TNR (Trap/Neuter/Release). This is where members of a kitty colony (or colonies) are humanely trapped, then taken to a vet clinic where they are spayed (if female) or neutered (if male), then given their feline vaccinations, & lastly an ear is tipped to mark them (it seems Mish Mish missed this part of the process)! They are then released back into their colony where they are fed & observed for life, or if socialized they can be adopted into loving homes (like Mish Mish). I'm fortunate to be owned by 2 such furbabies, Pyewacket & Gillian. We would like to take this opportunity to thank nice folks, like yourselves, for adopting! A house w/out a cat (or more) just isn't a home!🐈🐈

Picked up and fixed is called, TNR. Trap, Neuter Release……
My rooster is soooo mean. We got him as a chick which are guaranteed 99% to be a hen….lucky us he was that 1%😂. He tries to murder us every time we go outside. Sigh……
    Question: do you take
Mish Mish home with you every day or leave him at the cabin?
By the way, Mish Mish is hard to type. Auto correct wants to put Amish or mush….😂😂
    Fascinating video!

Chicken soup makes a very nice meal! Lately, everybody I know has been making and eating chicken soup because it's cold and flu season. And doctors can't even tell you why, but chicken soup works! My favorite versions of this wonderful cold and flu cure? Won-ton soup and matzo ball soup.

I live in Canada. I was born in Quebec where French settlers came., including my family who were traced back to Normandy as far back as the 1600s. My understanding is that Quebecois French is the old French and the Parisian French is modern French. There is also Acadian French in New Brunswick. There are other parts of the world, like in a particular part of Africa I forget the name, where French is also spoken.
