- It's chilly morning for a couple who are heading out to a wedding. The date is March 14th 1775, an important year in American history but just another day in the lives of many. How did these people dress? How did they shave or even brush their teeth? Things that we take for granted today looked completely different 250 years ago. Today we'll try on beautiful clothing from our old friends, Samson Historical.
You can find their shop here: www.samsonhistorical.com/
Samson also has a thorough cataloge with full color photos. You can request for one to be sent to your residence from their website here:
www.samsonhistorical.com/page...
Samson offers a wide range of goods that can be used in both a modern and a historical setting. They offer men and women's clothing, home furnishings including blankets and pottery. Shooting supplies, tradtionally crafted glass bottles, personal care, men and womne's footware, leather goods and care, teas, iron cookware, redware and so much more. I am often asked where I obtain my historically accurate equipment and honestly most of it comes from Samson! Once you browse their site you may recgonize some of their goods that I use in my cabin. Whenever I order from them I recieve my package within 3 days too which is excellent. I can't recomend them enough for those seeking traditional craftsmenship.
All of the cosmetics and toiletries, minus the shaving equipment and soap, were purchased from Littlebits on Etsy. Her shop specilizes in recreating historical toiletries using real period recipes.

For those looking for historically accurate clothing, cookware, and more things then I can list really check out Samson Historical. Some of you have heard me talk about them before when you've asked me where I get my cookware from. They know that I like them and I've been purchasing from them for years. I'm their #1 fan! They have a website and a catalogue. They just released a new catalogue in fact (you can request for one to be mailed to you from their website). If you are a reinactor, or just dabble in tradtional folkart and cookware you won't be dissapointed if you give them a try. Here is their site and you all have a great day! www.samsonhistorical.com/
Can you do more stuff from the timeframe around 1775- all the way to early 1825 as you do now? I’ve signed up to get a Samson catalog!
Can you say where you got your robe or dressing gown from? I have a feeling it was made for you but it's such a pretty print. 🖐️🇺🇸🌟
@@AlphaGatorDCS concur! Will we be able to watch any early American Gardening Tricks? I want to be learn how to be an historical gardener!
That was an exceptional gift! You look stunning! If you had to purchase a complete outfit ready made from a supplier, which reenactors rarely do, that's about $1000 worth of clothes for everything from the innermost layers to the outermost.
Samson Historical is an excellent company!
I didn't see any coffee grinders. 😢
Had a mild heart attack when he stepped back from the table the first time 😂😅
They both blink the same way and have the same awkwardness. This is a match made in heaven
What a rude thing to even comment 😂
I think that is just how they spoke to each other back then as man and wife. It wasn’t like it is now by any means.
@@Sun_MoonAries Come on. They're weird, but it's in an endearing way lol.
@@Sun_MoonArieshow
I’ve been watching them for a while and I’m autistic and I stim by frequently blinking… I’m not diagnosing AT ALL but she has some interesting mannerisms and she makes cute repetitive noises like she has echolalia ♥️ I agree they are weird in an enduring way and I really enjoy watching
I recall watching my great-grandmother--who was born in 1892--wash her face each morning in her bedroom with a pitcher and basin when there was a bathroom with running water just across the hall. That was between the years of 1976--1981. She would get up around 5:00 am and I would secretly watch her go through this ritual of hers that I found festinating. I now understand why she never used the sink in the bathroom with the running water. This was a woman who was born in the 1800's. I wish that I had interviewed her about her life before she passed away at the age of 101...... Anyhow, I love you Mom Mom, RIP.
Aww I called my grandma MomMom too! ❤
@@jenniferallen4420 was your grandmother from in or around the Philadelphia Pennsylvania area?
That's from Swedish, right? Lovely
@kaersten3623 wow!!!!! Yes!!!!
My grandma and mom both born and raised in Philadelphia Pennsylvania!!
Why? Is that a Philly thing?
Justine, “You’re not like that, you don’t get shy?” Ron (as he turns towards the camera for a pant-less full frontal), “Not really.” 🤣 Priceless!
I'm dying! 😂😂😂😂lol
@@colorvision7ه
I can’t believe Ron doesn’t have pants on! 😂
Came straight to the comments to see if anyone else noticed!! 😂
😂😂😂
Was kind of hoping there were some pants among those packages! He should have gotton something! Attention Samson Historical: please get Our guy Ron something....pants or not. But actually didn't men wear night shirts? Or long John's? Or was that later on?
Where's Ron's breeches!
I zoomed in. Dang, he was careful !
They need to send Ron pants!
Lol 😂
😂😂
Their occasional awkward laughs whenever they're doing something kind of intimate is so endearing. Speaks volumes about the morality at the time and the dynamics of marriage.
Lol yes was just saying this to myself
You realize this isnt real right? Lol
Like when she holds out her leg for him to take off her stockings...
I was expecting them to actually hop on a cart and attend a wedding... I was so ready for it!
Me too
Me too
You never think about people in the past just sitting and waiting impatiently for their partner to finish getting ready, but of course they did. That's really what struck me most-just this little banal moment that connects us all.
My husband is not this patient, he'd be doing something, waiting on me to be ready.
LOL, many of my family members will take forever in the bathroom to get ready, and they don't really look any different when the get out!
they probably had animals to tend to, furnature to be made, clothes to be sewn, kids to be looked after, or cleaning to be done. I doubt they were just sitting there watching each other shave and get dressed.
They usually got up early the man usually outside doing chores and the woman inside cooking and cleaning.
He is unbelievably patient. No way I could be this patient. I would be climbing the walls in half the time.
It's pleasant and satisfying to me that they do this reenactment without background music....it makes the depiction seem more realistic with only conversation, just like it was back then....no musical _soundtrack_ accompanying their ordinary movements.
Same here!
ABSOLUTELY!😀
In total agreement!
The lighthearted flirting throughout really makes this. Giving me a stupid cheesy grin
I really love how kind you are to each other. What a lovely couple.
Me too ❤
I’m just hear for the comments about Ron not wearing pants🤣🤣
Justine I love your robe
Literally same 🤣🤣🤣🤭
The truth is that on most men the shirt would have been longer. Just that Ron looks to me like a particularly tall dude, well over six foot.
@@jabujolly9020 that's exactly it, a few folks are just scandalized by it. He didn't expose at all and was modest as possible.
Right?!? He kept tugging his shirt down too I wish it was longer for him 😅
I thought I was going crazy when I didn’t see pants… 😂😂😂
They prove soul mates are a thing. On all of earth these 2 people found each other. And now create really good content together. I just love the way they love each other. And the historical stuff is amazeballs. Love the attention to detail. ❤❤
I love how she’s so beautiful but doesn’t know it. And he keeps trying to tell her without even getting frustrated. What a sweet couple.
you guys are so cute, I love that you can share the same interests and get fulfilment out of it. They way you look at each other is adorable.
Ron was correct in adding some more color to Justine. The color complimented the bodice perfectly. Good job Ron you are such a gentleman.
Ron was so excited he couldnt even put some pants on..
I can’t help thinking how utterly horrible it would have been to be stuck in an unhappy marriage back then, let alone a violent one. Everything was so much more intimate, slower, and quieter. You really needed your partner to be your friend.
I love how despite how much has changed, nothing really has changed at all. This could basically be me and my husband from this morning.
Without the brandy, I hope.
@@dewilew2137 now dont ruin it for everyone else! you can make your personal ron miserable all you want, but leave the rest of the worlds rons out of it. if we wanna get sh*tfaced at 10am because we're being forced to go to some strangers' wedding all early `AND` our old lady gets to carry the gun, you can bet your santa maria we're breaching that threshold tee-totally colonial trashed. we havent done anything to deserve punishment yet. thats what the liquor's for.
Ron: "I'm really tired. I dont think people will notice if I don't wear pants. This table is pretty high..."
Everyone else: 😳 "I'm scared he's going to have to pickup something. "
I was worried the whole time 😂
I'm worried about people getting demonetized. lol.
Not me , I was hoping he would !😉
🤣🤣🤣
I had such anxiety over this, lol!
Men have been waiting for their wives to finish getting dressed for many a century. I enjoy watching your videos. How our ancestors lived it's truly amazing. Thank you for this production.
I'm a middle aged woman and recently learned from Justine what a bodice was. 🤣
Haha @Enthusiast! It totally makes sense here! We ladies are spoiled now.😊
@@jackieblue787 u need to watch historical movies and series lol I am almost a senior and I know what one of those was, most likely not very comfortable as they were tightened to the core to make the waist look slim, similar to a girdle.
Every time we go out, I wait. We are old now and its never improved!
@@chuckdow1 boomer humour
I love how he helps do up her corset. Back in those days it was pretty common for men to help their ladies dress cause wardrobe was complicated as all hell. Love your channel! ❤️
Helping someone dress is very personal, it brings a closeness. Relationships back then experienced that, along with no electronics ECT ect .. in my opinion it all plays a part of why they'd last longer than current times.
@@GrannysWatching13 It's really about living. In the old times, it is inconvenient to live, everything takes longer, so people enjoy life by really living, taking their time doing everything that we just storm through in record time nowadays.
That is not remotely true
The banter and conversations you two had through out were so wholesome. It's hard to think people back then acted like this and were normal people, but it's such a nice thought. Also that dress looks gorgeous!
What you do is very important to keep us reminded how far we've come as a country. People today have no idea how hard life used to be until very recently. We don't appreciate enough electricity i.e. refrigeration, heating, indoor plumbing, medical science which alleviates much human suffering and makes what used to be common causes of premature death from infection of little consequence like skin abrasians, boils, cuts, etc. Keep going kids. We need you!!
@@redwingrob1036 How could they not? My dad born in 1918, grew up with outhouses, kerosine lamps and people just dying with little explanation. Yes, he said life was hard even though everyone was at about the same economic level. Hard is hard.
If couples treat each other like that things would be more peaceful for sure!

This is amazing. It’s literally like going back in time. I realize that things were not all hoity toity and stuffy like the art and history books make it seem. They were normal people just like us…just a different time. Amazing reenactment. Love this. Thank you.
Love that you guys say “Mr. Sampson”. Just adds that depth to it.
Ron is such a sweet talker ! I would have been late to every event wearing so many layers of clothing .You 2 are such a lovely looking couple ! Loved the video !
Pants?
Ikr
you ✌🏾
I was like wait....Ron ...Isn't wearing pants!!!! That is awesome and so 1820 in the morning with his "nightshirt" on. This channel rocks!!!
I think much of that is Ron's height. He's substantially taller than most men today, never mind the 1700s.
@@jabujolly9020 but the sleeves are the right length, and arm- & leg-length are related. Stretching your arms out wide, measuring from fingertips to fingertips, generally approximates the length from head to toe in most people.
So making a shirt that is wide enough, with long enough sleeves, should also indicate to the maker that the wearer would need it to be longer...
@@jabujolly9020 That's an interesting comment because the Early American group happen to have a video, not their main style of videos but the educational-discussion ones with their affiliate friends, discussing the question and notion about height differences back then and today. It's quite interesting and telling.
@@alexsdb9712 I'd be interested to see that. My understanding is that the average height for an American male then was 5 foot 7 as opposed to 5 foot 9 today, but we know that there definitely were tall people then too. I mean among our Founding Fathers, George Washington was 6 foot 2, John Marshall 6 foot 1, Thomas Jefferson 6 foot 2 1/2.
We seem to be returning to these simpler times these days. They don't look so bad after all. Thank you both for taking us back to our recent past when people were perhaps more grateful and dare I say generally happier.
We do???? Where YOU livin'???
I love the fact that you don't pretend, you really brushed your teeth and then you really spit "elegantly" in the same place you shaved and cleaned your arm. by the way, I didn't know women in that era shaved. i just discovered you and already i adore you. greetings from the old world
The way you two interact with eachother, not acting and acting, just tickles me and I don't know why 😆☺
It gives me a sense of time travel with knowledge of the future.
it tickles you….
As a person in college studying history and planning on teaching it in the future I love channels like these, they not only make history real but show the everyday mundane lives of people of back then and how they are no different then ours, they had hopes, dreams, fears, and worries like we do today. Reminds me that nothing has ever changed or will ever change at all in terms of what it means to be human. Keep up the good work.
Good luck if you r teaching in public schools. They r changing history. Better run out and buy some very old history books.
@@antoniaschiffer4958 define "change" also I will most likely be teaching private school since they pay more.
Then you’ll also like Ron’s channel Frontier Patriot. They make recipes on this channel then eat the meal, sit and talk on his channel. He has a video on making bullets that’s neat.
nothing except internet, technology, and overpopulation lol
@@quinnjohnson9750 some people think they know everything history is history
What a treasure this project is: so lovingly and carefully retrieved from the archives and brought to life: the stories of “ordinary people”, like you and I - those who history neglects. Those who have gone before us are ahead of us on the path: not behind, forgotten: and they should always be in our sights. Thank you for putting them there, where they belong!
The makeup part was truly fascinating. We take our current makeup for granted. Totally. This is awesome. Great content
The white make up isn’t the same without the arsenic in it though! Lol.
The mustard shoes are gorgeous! I would wear those in the Fall with jeans and a tweed jacket.
omg i was thinking the same thing! how about this though: have you ever thought about ketchup shoes?? 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I feel like a time traveler when I watch your videos. Keep making them!! They are great. Plus you guys are so cute! The make up was so interesting.
I second this comment wholeheartedly! 👌

A most interesting and relaxing episode. The gentle patience between this married couple makes me long for a less hurried life. Thank you for not over-producing the video. It's in keeping with the era you're creating! May God bless you both!
To see Ron so excited over the paper for his cartridges is so wholesome :)
Good thing he didn't get too excited !
What kinda cartridge? Probably not computer.
@@lisacelentano3934 Cartridges for his rifle and pistol. This was well before ones made of brass. People used black powder, paper and melted lead in molds to make bullets which they used to "roll their own" cartridges.
OMG! "As tight as they'll go, please. We have people to impress." I love that. Justine lacing up the stays is soooo much more visually pleasing than me wiggle jumping into my Spanx! A roomy pocket for your dress is still every woman's dream. Don't we all get excited when trying on a dress only to discover it has pockets!?
Probably one reason I just don’t wear dresses and haven’t worn one since childhood lol. I feel so..naked and bizarre without pockets. It feels weird to me.
I know right. I love pockets. I feel violated without them. Lol!
This reenactment seems so real and I just Love how the two get along so well. The clothes are awesome aswell!
omg yes!! i was thinking the same thing 😆😆😆😆😆😆😆
ron was do nice giving out compliments.. any woman of any century would love to hear them
As a man, that is the first makeup tutorial I have ever enjoyed watching...
That foot warmer is fascinating!
My usual go to has been Townsends & Sons however for basic necessities Sampson Historical has really great prices. Cookie presses and sugar savers for $4-$5. Their stoneware and wooden utensils and dishes are very affordable, their wooden bowls are around $20, spoons $4. Small cast iron pot for $20. Love the red ware plates, small ones were $12. And I love that they sell products that you just really can’t find anymore, in traditional packaging. Like their liquid rouge, soaps, combs, toothbrushes, salves, pot scrubbers, $3 cotton woven hand towels. And I LOVE the teas and spices, again, all traditionally packaged for the most part and highly affordable. They don’t upcharge for the novelty of it. And that makes me think they’re truly just passionate about this stuff.
How they respect each other.. we miss it nows a days.
No doubt the finest looking early American couple I've seen. I used to do Civil War reenacting and that brown wrapping paper is perfect for cartridges.
You both are so cute. Bravo to Ron for braving no-pants for the reenactment. He is such a gentleman too. Lovely couple. Adorable how you both share the passion of reenacting.
i would say the exact same thing!! me and my boyfriend aspire to be like julie and john!!
The attention to detail it took to do all this... now I really appreciate the little things we have today! Great work!
Gotta admit these two are the cutest couple and I’m glad I found them today
Foot warming box. I'm going to expect this from my husband every morning now. 🤣

I sorta miss this if this was the lifestyle. No more internet. No more phone. No more bull. I wish life were that way again. I love this.
The camera placement and weaving in and out of roleplay is subtle and very impressive.
This is amazing, I’ve never considered how normal and simple the interactions would have been throughout history. Watching this is giving me some great ideas for my book.
Couldn’t help but send out a wolf whistle for Ron’s legs 😂🥰

I like how the boyfriend just rolls with it. If I wanted my guy to dress up in old fashioned clothes and film videos with me he’d never do it. We love a supportive partner.
Probably a husband in this time period... 🙃
Its not like they would have anything to do..there was no entertainment..no stores no movies no bars no casinos no nothing..they could take a walk in the forest at best
My husband would have never done it the first 5 years of our marriage. Now since he’s older and more mature he would be more inclined to humor me on the subject lol .

I would too though 😂 cake is life.
I am so happy to have found this channel. My husband and I used to be Civil War reenactors and this isn't too far from that. I thought he wouldn't be interested in watching these videos with me, but we LOVE them. The normal chit chat between the two of you is the sweetest ever. I love the pet names.....with that being said, we have now started doing that and having so much fun with it!

i’m so happy your husband started caring about things that you like!! 😉
It's fun!
Its so fun to think of people back then going "ugh I dont want to go to this wedding but we have to"
This was epic! I loved how you both were not only teaching about this time period but also acted like you were really there. Honestly the best thing I have seen in forever! Everything you both did was historical in line with what could have happened in 1775 and the only monderized thing was the cameras. I really felt like I was drawn back in to the 1700's America.
Justine: "Just one more thing to complete my outfit." (The pistol ) Me: "You go girl!"
