Teaching children there is fate that guides their life is problematic. Certainly there are things out of our control, natural cause and effect and others actions. But, accepting fate alone makes us slaves to the outside world. The dynamic character is stunted.

That’s exactly the part that hit me as can’t possibly be concretely true and I was shocked. “Criminal”? I live by virtue bc I cared about good character all my life. And psychopaths lack empathy so how can they be saintly? Maybe just simply over generalized.

I can attest to the advice in this video. The more I became comfortable admitting my mistakes quickly and openly the more comfortable I became with myself. Admitting mistakes also makes me more approachable as a friend and a co-worker. And the more I directly admitted my character weaknesses to myself the smaller my ego became and the more clearly I could learn to rectify and cope with those weaknesses. In general, it is quite wise to simply admit the truth and keep the ego in check.

@@satnamo The quote is basically directly taken from Nietzsche's Thus Spoke Zarathustra, the chapter's called something "Of the tree at the mountain" (at least that's my attempt to translate it). If you want to understand Jung on a deeper level, I highly recommend Nietzsche as a background.

@@tunasky4sure His concept of empathy feels like it also englobes "fake" kind of empathy. I understand that a child may learn empathy by watching a funeral, for example. But I don't think that the true, sincere connection of the true feeling of empathy is within that child's "heart".

Are you supposed to be taking the stance of hard science vehemently rejecting god and every mention of him? It's laughable.. @Mike Rocker There are so many misconceptions and wrong facts in your reply that I don't even know where to begin with. You have clearly no idea about Analytical Psychology. But let's unpack this:
First of all, that he died of a heart attack is just not true. Your portrayal of him living an unhealthy lifestyle is an oversimplification anyway.
1. The persona isn't a mask over your true personality, it is part of your personality and your psyche, which is why you have to differentiate it from the others.
2. People aren't only either introverted or extraverted but have both, introverted and extraverted cognitive functions. People just usually have an at least slight preference which of them they use. No one is a "pure" extravert or introvert, this would mean we'd either have no access to our subjective essense or no access to the world around us, both being impossible.
3. Most of the things you adress are beliefs you do not share and that is okay. But he believed these things for a reason. If the things Jung stated would be all "common sense" we'd have more healthy and self-aware people who wouldn't fall easily for group-think and mindless collectivism. But we have. Especially nowadays.
If it's so easy and common-sense to you, you should probably ask yourself why you seem to have such a negative opinion on Jung and why you are so quick to dismiss his beliefs. As your opinion seems to be very affected by emotions (Jung SUCKED), there could be some serious projection going on. But that's just my observation.
I mean, Mike Rocker probably has his reasons to believe that what he understands as being Jung's contribution sucks. In that sense he isn't wrong, and neither are any of you. You all just have a different understanding of the same man and his work which, based on what you know, makes perfect sense.
I have recommended this channel to many of my friends, but they just don't take it seriously. I can't imagine, how can they not be interested in their own development.
Some people are born philosophically minded, but most are too busy having fun to look inside themselves especially when young.

Really? If that were true then we'd be living in a utopia of philosopher kings, wouldn't we? Since we aren't then we must assume that only a statistical minority of humanity is capable of self-overcoming, for clearly, all men are most certainly not created equal.
It’s not the capacity, It is the motivation. Do you want to face your fears, your humiliation, your shame. Give up the idealisation you have of yourself, or do you want fries with that. The number of people that actively seek this is small but the capacity is as Jung said is within us all.

@Mike Rocker As someone who also values democratic government, I'd have to disagree with you. Academy of Ideas takes a perspective that might be more 'libertarian' in scope but there's nothing wrong with that. All content requires perspective. Societies have always struggled between unity and individual freedom. There are problems with both. There are benefits of both. These days, globalization amplifies that struggle. You might be more on the side of 'team unity' (as I might tend to be), but team 'individual freedoms' is literally the other half of the equation. We need both to work properly to advance our society. We can't do EVERYTHING for the collective, and we can't do EVERYTHING for ourselves. The truly wise must agree with the logical arguments of both teams, even if they tend to lean towards one or the other. I think this channel performs that balancing act well.

Ahh the good ol days before we were inundated with media and had to actually go seek out what we wanted instead of having it all suggested to us.

Self Awareness is key. If you know your own strengths and weaknesses - work on what can be worked on and accept what can't be changed - you become "undefeatable"

I believe it's about reprogramming your thinking. Every single moment is truly the only "New" thing. If you will write down the things that you want to do and be, then take a few minutes to imprint those things into your mind, and you will be on your way. Expand this practice into more time, and it is important to schedule this time, just like you schedule the rest of your life. Make this practice a high priority. Be kind to yourself, compliment yourself on your qualities, and don't beat yourself up for your shortcomings. We all suffer the human condition. I don't know you, but I know for sure that you are an amazing person with skills and qualities that make you absolutely unique. This will take time, much time, but you are becoming who you are second by second. Minute by minute and so on... Begin journaling your moments. It's important to be able to track your progress. Nothing too complicated, life is busy enough.
And pray. If you do not believe in God, pray anyways. Pray that if there is a God, that you receive revelation.
If there is no God, then it certainly won't hurt a thing, but why take a chance. All of This was my journey from hopelessness and still is. I used to degrade myself, and compare myself to others and feel inferior. I was depressed and suicidal until moment by moment I began changing my thinking, until I was literally reborn to a different person all through taking control of my thoughts. Old habits die hard. We must continue the process every day, every moment. Never forget that you are an amazing one of a kind human being, and you matter more than you recognize!

I'm facing into my own darkness on purpose. because I want to know the truth about who I believe myself to be. I'm not trying to fix our change or transcend anything about myself.
I know this is difficult for people to accept, but I'm not looking for happiness or peace right now, just truth, no matter how painful ugly or frightening.
To be honest, I tried to employ those
Mental manipulation techniques for over 20 years to no avail.
If they worked for you I'm glad, but they didn't work for me.
Thankfully I have discovered something that is.

This has been my journey as of late, and this is absolutely refreshing to me, to hear that someone else is on this similar path. There's so much information, so many different opinions, so many paths that all seem to dead end. And while I've contemplated and truly set my heart and mind on seeking only truth, I've found myself in a lonely solemn state. I find it difficult to communicate this with my wife, friends. It's especially difficult to have conversation with my Christian friends as they seem to always want to come up with some answers and or ideas to "help" me. Probably like I did with you so yes, I'm guilty as well. But I understand now from a different angle, it's deeply personal and I'm understanding more now that maybe its a journey we must take and navigate alone?
For me, it's about knowing exactly who I am, what are my gifts/talents, what is my purpose, and what is the whole.

The reality is that we hide our true selves, mostly without even knowing it, from society in order to maintain the status quo.
But true freedom comes from discovering yourself and then embracing it. If everyone did that, humanity would propel itself to a level far beyond anything we could possibly imagine.

It is my experience that once you have or allowed your being to be taken down to the point of total breakdown (whether physical, mental or both) you find the final desperate needs you hold as the truest and purest and in that finding we then see our base.
The true sense of happiness comes from so little in our existences and lives but once recognized in our introversion and made the prominent or principal driver in our existences it becomes very evident to the rest of our sphere of influence. This "happiness " (when purely sourced from within) becomes a beacon that ignites the happiness sources in those around you and this perpetuation of happiness is how others perceive our "personality".
Happiness begets happiness and it becomes self perpetuating in society if all find it's source and motivation within self.
Having become a self-realized individual has changed my trajectory in life totally. Having been an introverted and neurotic teen, I'm now a self-assured extroverted and confident young man. I know who I am, my philosophy, and I will not compromise my own beliefs for the approval of others. I now take responsibility for everything in my life, whether the result of my own actions and intentions or not. Almost mystically, more opportunities have presented themselves and I wouldn't have been able to capitalize upon them if I hadn't grown in these ways.
I highly doubt that you can change your core personality from introvert to extrovet, this sound more that you have fallen into the trap to identify yourself with your persona.

Jung reads just like the Mandukya Upanishad. Similarly Nietzsche's work was influenced by Schopenhauer who in turn was influenced by Indian texts.
When Swami Vivekananda addressed his lectures in the west in 1890s, his audience were T.S.Eliot,Sigmund Freud, Nikola Tesla, Alan Watts,Christopher Isherwood, Romain Rolland,J.D. Salinger, Aldous Huxley etc. Even Maslow's hierarchy of needs is a translation from Sri Aurbindo's planes and parts of being.
And earlier both Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson never denied theinfluence of Hindu philosophy in their outlooks and legacy.
The whole of Psychology stands on the back of the Upanishads.
I hope India's contribution is duly appreciated some time.

You can start by identifying your habit, habit is autonomous, it is the thing that you do over and over and it becomes unconscious, your unconscious self is your default mode thinking, your first reaction to any stimulus given, your feeling also gives a clue to your unconscious mind, your value, desire. In short, it is the thing that governs your actions, words, and thoughts.
This is profound. It is amazing how readily the “public persona” can be applied to the social media image so many try to maintain without regard to who they really are (with all our inherent weaknesses and limitations). This also helps explain how so many people fall prey to ideology

I believe doing that wouldn't make much sense.

Excellent explanation of how to cultivate a great character, a genuine personality. What we do with what we are given. Looking within and saying as I am is as I act is as humbling as it should be. And that is tremendously encouraging in these times when people are so thirsty for social prominence.

@Mike Rocker Whose truth are you helping them see though? A lot of these subjects are debatable and constantly up for discussion. There's also several comments of yours that haven't exposed any truth, and you've just merely posted something passive aggressive towards another persons comment instead. So while you try to justify yourself as moral and truth, you're coming off very bitter with low self esteem. Have you considered that neither you nor them are right? And perhaps you could be wrong?
If this channel sucks why waste your time with it? If you are of high moral expression, then why not do that on your own channel and be an alternative perspective for those you claim are wrong?
I actually think you should speak out if you see something that's wrong, but doing so in RUclips comments section is always ineffective. And of course if we are to point out something that is wrong we should also provide a counter point to prove it.

I've lived on the fringes of society for 14 years now and have very little to do with anyone. I no longer have any social role. Paraphrasing the last American hermit: "Solitude increased my perception, and when I applied that increased perception to myself, I lost my identity. There was no audience to perform for. I had no need to define myself. I became irrelevant." I simply exist, so there is no mask to put on or integrate myself with or conform to.

I often see comments about how usually lots of the content produced by AOI is appropriately well-timed. For me this time it was exactly the same as I'd read Two essays on Analytical Psychology just last month and absolutely loved it.
While watching this video I wondered how amazing it would be if sometime in the future AOI would undertake the task of reviewing a whole book, and TWOAP is definitely one worth doing that for.
Everyday I'm confronted with the weight of my choices, and the impact on other people and myself. Being myself its the most important thing, wrong or right, I always have the most real experiences, and they add up in my personality. With the knowledge of the consequences of my attitudes, I can compare and chose who I want to become. In short: Always be your true self, no matter what!

That said, Inferiority and superiority complexes are derived from Alfred Adler, not Carl Jung. Jung did talk about complexes, of course, and the post-Jungian literature along with archetypes does take up these ideas to a large extent, but specifically inferiority / superiority dynamic within the unconscious is based in Adler's analysis of sibling birth place and rivalry. Jung's version of this way of thinking is more to do with the influx of an inflated ego to a deflated ego, which I know you have wonderfully illustrated in many of your videos. This idea is similar to the oscillation between grandiose and vulnerable narcissism from a post-Freudian perspective (Klein, Winnicott, Lacan, Kohut, etc).

True.. i could understand phobias. Like mine are height and large insects. I should bungee jump and hold several tarantulas on my body.. so to speak
Inner difficulty could also be scared of commitment. Which then implies you should bond with others.
But the fear has so many more layers.. you can't just do one thing and it disappears.
It's important to finish the quote:
"convert his inner difficulties into real experiences instead of expending them in useless fantasies."
My take is that whatever fantasies you have, they exist because of some psychic factors. Find out the theme of your fantasies and face them in the real world.

Yes. Most of us (at least the men) have sexual fantasies which we have neither the libidinal endurance nor supersized equipment to fulfil in direct experience, and which would get us into severe legal difficulties were we nevertheless to attempt it! Beyond using these "useless" fantasies as a light into the unconscious -- and assayer of changes that have occurred in the "real" world -- I do not see what is to be done with these "inner difficulties."

I would argue that it is easier to find your unconscious part of yourself by looking inward than looking outward and observing others. Human perception is so limited, we get so many stuffs wrong and make biased assumption of others' mind.
Carl jung was a genius. I am going through the same experience of where I am not able to locate inferiority complexes within my unconscious and unable to see it but i am partially aware of it. It's impacting my life, my relationships. This is such an eye opener. to turn our observation outside on others to learn what triggers our inferiority complexes through their behaviours. This makes a lot of sense. Also, a very interesting concept of discovering and building one's character as a life project is something everyone is capable of doing. It gives a goal to everyday life and ways to discover ourselves through others. Just wow.

Carl Jung is a fascinating philosopher and psychologist. His words seem to strike my curiosity to the point of questioning the meaning of who I am. He teaches you to open up your mind and experience life as it was intended. Very few philosophers can demonstrate the power of our unique self by words of wisdom. Top notch content as always.

It's been said to fully understand a book, you have to read it 8-10 times.

Dear Academy of Ideas, you post such important content. The ideas and discoveries of humanity’s great minds are invaluable in assisting us in our efforts toward personal evolution. I believe that if you would include artwork that is reflective of all of humanity, rather than just the European images, more people will benefit. We all want to see a bit of ourselves in our exchanges with others.
When we see our own problems and strive to overcome or improve apone them does it not drive one insane when the people around us lie ignore blame everyone around them especially family that have done it for years
This is a great men's work channel, which is not to say women can't benefit.

Umm, not really, look at most people?! Clearly not common sense
Just to clarify: most people feel weak (or impotent) they don't have the capacity (innate or learned) to become aware of their weaknesses. It's not to say everyone is floundering but to say when it comes to deep self reflection most people aren't capable. Even those who are capable of such awareness may lack the will or the method to improve on their weaknesses.
In our age success equals strength, professional or commerical etc. Very few people become great in the manner which we are discussing, great characters
Corrected post after writing too quickly and getting confused lol:
Not really, for example: For a long time when I was younger I was trying to be strong but was not aware of basic weaknesses and I had to work fairly hard on recognizing them before I had a solution. For example, I was working out muscles incessantly for years thinking more work would equal gains whilst I didn't have basic bodily stability and balance. Or I was trying to complete long complicated projects in my science field, when I didn't know how to organize my simple day to day experimental tasks with efficiency or rigour. You can't build off of weak bases, and that includes character. Also, I recognized after a few years of professional life that I don't have the confidence I need to move up in the chain of things, and maybe for a while (sometimes still now) I rationalize it as lack of interest when really it is mostly lack of capabilities.
Most people don't make the connection to the bases of themselves and what is holding them back, it takes analysis and discipline. People mostly (not always) don't act because they don't have anything tangible to act upon.
Of course there are cliches about personal improvement that can work for you, on this or that flaw, but that is ultimately just external imposition, we are talking about genuinely communicating with the weaknesses you have in your own character, specific to your life and environment. It's about creatively solving personal problems. This gets you further by far.
It really isn't as simple as people being lazy (though that does factor in, I'm not denying laziness) it's just not as simple as everyone is aware but lazy
the point is those kind of generalisations won't actually give you solutions because you aren't aware of what you need to do to get passed them, anyone could just say "I'm weak, I'm poor". unless you communicate with yourself or your body you won't actually know what the fundamental weaknesses are and will never improve. Also, needing more money isn't a character weakness, it is an imperative.
Again everyone can read an article on how to be a better greater person on Google and not have the slightest clue about their own character flaws that will forever hold them back. The global 'primary' awareness is at most a feeling, I think you have forgotten what it means to be unaware, think back to childhood or teenagehood. .
I understand what your saying but you miss the point of the video if generalisation is what you think is so important. For example, if it's common sense to know that you need to be strong why are only a handful of people admirable athletes, physicists, philosophers etc.? because it's not common sense to identify your weaknesses, to methodically investigate them and then move to the next level in your output and performance. I'm sure common sense is useful for life but not for self-overcoming and improvement. Unless you are saying common sense is not so common?
I dont know why, but this videos come to light just when they are usefull for my development. It's like if something just happened in my life, and a video appears to describe the awkwardness I came to live.

Some people like philosophy. Some don't. And some haven't even heard of the word philosophy but are naturally quite philosophical.
I used to be a student of philosophy many years ago. Let me tell you about my professor. He was a religious person teaching metaphysics, cosmology, theodicy,
Ontology etc. He was more concerned about words, phrases, diction etc. than making philosophy understandable to his students. His arguments were for scholastic philosophy and he condemned all who opposed or seemed to oppose it. If anyone spoke against his views or favoured people like Kant, Descartes, Scotus and others , he would call them stupid. In the 2 years he taught me, I didn't see him smile even once whether in class or outside. Sometimes I used to wonder what's the use of being so knowledgeable and have so many degrees and qualifications if one can't be happy?
Each time we must accept our weaknesses and strengths . acceptance acknowledgement of all that we are will help us through our life journey
We have a personal description of perfect. We become squinted with it and then an awareness of Its constant growth is revealed, but we can always be caught off guard. 🙂
