Batman and Robin comparing their utility bat belts for next video.
Just got me the Paerau setup cause he's a skux! Kiwi living in oz and just starting my apprenticeship at 32. This channel has been the goods. Big ups bros.
Hahaha same here, although still living In NZ And 34. Just trying to find the braces he has
Notice it’s a left hand belt with the pouches swapped around
@@Outta_Tyme got the belt. Just want the braces
I’ve worn tool bag for over twenty years. Cheap ones, expensive ones. This is what I’ve learned, “Time hates cheap tools.” Occidental, best investment ever! Wears like iron, extremely versatile. You can’t go wrong.
At 3:50 "I just wanted to, OK?" That's a perfectly legit answer!
I like using my tool floor, works a treat lol
I wear one all the time in Britain and I'm not a chippy just a general builder. Wear it for everything except groundworks
Yeah floor belts are far more comfortable
Plus it works double duty with a floordrobe for your excess clothes.
Thanks for the vids! I’m a carpenter in Colorado. 23 years of swinging a hammer! My wife and I are considering emigrating to NZ, so it’s nice to see how tradesmen operate and do business!
Better leave your AR15 behind, no toys like that here I'm afraid.
did you end up emigrating ?
Quality Content like always! You made me really think about getting all my tools in the cordless version, I don't need them but seeing you work with them gave me some ideas. Greetings from Holland.
Working my way through the Scott brown show. Great to see a couple of lads loving their work and their tools.
I love tool talk lol everyone has there preferences. My main tool belt is dewalt for carpentry, kunys puch for sheet metal and another kunys pouch for electrical maintenance. I work 2 jobs part time, one doing home renovations and another hvac tech/installer. I just switch out the one pouch depending on what I am doing and it works great. A Frankenstein belt lol. I enjoy your videos, I'm from winnipeg canada! Keep up the good work.
The one justification I see for Scott's is that it's never going to fall apart. Twice as expensive, at least twice the life. When your nail punch holders rip out, it's not a huge deal, but it would annoy me. But it's a pretty good sign the rest of it is going to wear through soon. One piece at a time.
I still have two cheap belts for some reason- maybe to give to apprentices.
He got that belt as an apprentice,I'd say he's got his moneys worth tbh.
The nail punch holders and chisel holders always go (half the chippies on site have electrical tape on their chisel holders),butnthe rest of the belt is solid.
Occidental sells tool sheaths you can clip or slide into any pounches. Made of hard plastic to keep them from ripping into the nylon. Great for chisels
$295 for the shoulder straps alone is a steep price, BUT after searching for alternative "quality" shoulder straps, there isn't really much out there that quite as good or even close. I'm starting my apprenticeship end of the month and I'm going to invest in these tools and gear because you have done a very good job reviewing these products and the value is unquestionable.
As a DIY'er I place a big old green wheelie bin in the room or as close as to where I am working.
I score the GIB in horizontal & vertical lines with a utility knife, open up a hand hold using a crowbar end and give the GIB a firm yank and those sheets that need a bit of coaxing I use a pry bar/nail bar/wonder bar to lever out.
When the pieces come off, they virtually fold up so I just drop them straight into the bin.
When I did my first reno job after immigrating to NZ, a friend "taught" me how to remove GIB. It was a bit like Demo Time on HGTV, I mean getting stuck in with the biggest hammer you can hold and making as much mess as you can tolerate.
Needless to say from then I have figured it is a lot safer and cleaner to put the hammers away and rely on my Stanley Wonder Bar.
Things I have found in the walls range from a 1" carpenters chisel, a coat hook, bits of news paper stuffed in holes to gib stop over, to mummified mice and birds although I am yet to find gold bar ! :-)
You need to get your right hand man one of those sweet hammers for an xmas bonus. You made me buy one three weeks ago, best hammer I've ever swung. Have a good one guys.
Stiletto?
travisfrrll1 Vaughan the other titanium hammer. 😜
Stilletto hammers overated asf lol. #TeamEstwing
I have the Taurus left handed but I put it backwards n works mint. Yip adjustable square always gets ya. My chisel holder broke so I now slide it in there works a treat but speed square always falls out lol yip suspenders are the way I rekon 👍
I'm obsessed with the way Paerau says "pencil pocket" at 2:22
Yes there are so many on Amazon here. and your right some are spendy even here, but never be as spendy as in N.Z.
I was sold the moment I saw that sexy speed square pocket 🤩 what have I been doing with my life?? Off to the occidental shop I go 👍🏻
Hi Scot, I was a chippy in New Zealand for a couple of years and made the big move from the U.K. to come and help with the Christchurch rebuild and settled in Nelson. Sadly had to come home, due to family reasons.. but am looking to come back next year (covid allowing). Love it out there.
I have a question for you and a request.
I had a Taurus super Yankee which I liked but have moved to my first Occidental belt for framing.. my question is this.. out of the two.. which do you like more as a framing belt? Taurus for the weight and size, or Occidental for the organisation of the pouches.
Also.. my request is could you do a setup video on the setup of your shoulder straps on your belt.. they are an interesting setup especially with the actual adjustment part. Mine seem to work their way loose. Not sure if I have set it up right.
Keep up the good work and good vids. Enjoy you summer.. lucky lad. 😉😊
Great stuff Scott! Let us know if you’d ever be interested in testing out our bags.
Impressive how you pros are orders of magnitudes more efficient than my amateur hour special techniques with the wong tools spread over 4 different rooms. Quote of the day -3:52 - anything else to say? "I dunno - I s'pose you need a fkn thumbnail aye" lmao. 🤘
In the mid 1970's a New Zealand carpenter would have a 2 pouch ball bag and carry a hammer, 3 ft rule, a combination square, Stanley knife, nail punch and penile, that was about it and it cost something like $80 or 90 dollars all up and we got paid $1.10 per hr but were not expected to supply any power tools.
I don't like these big bulky tool belts and have been trying to find another 2 pouch ball bag. Americans have had speed squares since the 1920's, marvellous things for roofing especially if you get the book that came with the original square, didn't see any kiwi carpenters with them until very recently.
I use to have the same as Scott but sold it to the apprentice and now I use a tool vest made by Bjornklader in combination with there carpenter pro pants(or something like that) and man did it ever changed my life, super light weight, super comfy, really low profile so you don't get tangled into rafters and floor joists etc...
Love my oxys. Got them when I was in Alaska. Now using them in Portugal 🙌🏼
Awesome video Scott! I’ve been wanting to get a new tool belt for a long time, I have a Milwaukee tool belt that’s over 12 years old and the only reason why I haven’t got occidental or badger bags is I hate the break in period and nobody wants to be the new bag guy lol I’ll be getting some new ones soon though.
Sweet bro looking forward to the insta post 🙂
😎🙏🏽
Just ordered the same set up as Paerau, can’t wait!
Best thumbnail yet 👍👍
Smooth transition from the hammer to the nail bar👌🏾
I work in Auckland too and use the Occidental 9855 adjustable tool belt (lighter nylon style pouches with leather mainly on the wear points). Got it from Loven Tools a few years back. I still get grief from my colleagues (who all have the Taurus) because it's so much bigger than theirs. The leather around the top of the pouches helps keep them open to make it easier to get things in and out, but that means the bag is quite wide. When we are framing the outside wall studs @ 400 centres, I can't get through!
😂 I know how you feel man
Where does Paereau keep his egg flip?
lol!
I’ve got a kunys bag one side and a cheap CK one the other similar size to Pardoes rig. I think I will invest in the occidental when I can afford to. I’ve tried a bucket boss contractors rig in past and always come back to the cheaper ones.
Cool vids brothers. Really like your guys style and how you go about your business. Keep up the great work and continue to inspire us. Big ups to you both!!
You should do videos on the business aspect of your trade. Like how you get business, advertising, word of mouth, etc... how do you work with other guys, is it your job or his, do ya split it 50/50 or is he just a hired hand, etc....
Taurus super yankee is also the only leather belt that most shops carry, that's why everyone has them....I recently sold mine because the pockets are way too wide for me and go right around my waist
The A team is so weird but so good. Miss the man!
Am a bit confused. If I was to get a Super Yankee and wear it as in the video, buckle at front, do you get a left or right handed? I'm right handed
I have a set of big bags when I'm doing house construction, but a totally different set up for film work: I have to have a screw gun or impact driver holster. I typically hate things down my back side, I'm always squatting down to do base or whatever, crawling under stages etc. But when I'm banging homes together I have nearly exactly what you pros sport- except for the suspenders [braces]. Honestly, it's been a few decades since I was on a big house crew, and was just discovering the lower back pain Mr. P mentioned- so braces would be the next purchase. If I build another big house. My big house for now is the annual Haunted House I set up for the island kids [discarded movie scenery- very scary].
Hey Scott ordered the same suspenders I'm just on 6 foot or 183cm I think it is and I'm just wondering how tall you are because your suspenders look to be at the max setting do you find that they sit to high thanks
Where is pado??? I've been watching the deck reno on the new place
Makita Super Heavyweight belts and suspenders are the go for me.
Not sure if they have them over there but you should look at Diamondback tool belts, they make a bomber product also
I was eyeing the taurus roof plumbers tool belt, I ended up going with a buckaroo setup in the end but I reckon I stuffed up.
$450 aud on mine and it's uncomfortable as hell.
Get onto trade time tool belts. Local leather mob in South Australia. Good belts and pouches
I love the speed square holder in summer but in winter when I got gloves on the gloves always hooks it and it falls out
Fantastic video keep up the great work , and I wish you all success
teno pai paerau! what a natural on screen fulla
Morning Boys,
Quick question. Are both the suspender set ups the same and where can I check them out? Just running a cheap model atm.
I've been using the Taurus from day one. My last one lasted just over 12 years, had it with me in Scotland, Canada, USA and Aussie. In North America they would poke a bit of shit at how small the Taurus was and that I couldn't carry as much as them....I could never understand how/why they would carry so many tools, nails, screws etc each to their own I guess.
My two cents
Taurus tool belt - set combi square at 100 - 130mm (square not 45) and it will sit in that slot fine without stabbing in the leg. I also carry a speed square.
- the two little pockets/slots that are almost too small for anything are perfect for tek screw bits
- the only fault i find is that the leather loop on the back (nail bar slot) is the best place to hang a nail gun, but can't fit both.
Also Taurus customer service is pretty good. Newish nail bag was outside of warranty and they fixed it for free, (suspender loophole broke), free same day delivery and everything. I can not recommend them enough.
Hamish Goodley same looking for these suspenders, does Scott’s work with Taurus or are they both the same?
Looks like they are both from Occidental Leather. I remembered from one of Scott B's other episodes that loventools stocks them here in NZ. The 5055 series looks pretty mean, but she's NZ$239...just for the suspenders.
Both of the Suspenders are Occidental but Paerau's have more nylon than mine
do you guys wear belts for your pants in addition to your thicker tool belts? Right now I use tape holder, hammer loop attached to my belt through pants loops. I have ordered occidental bags and suspenders but want to know: do you wear a tool belt and pants belt, or try to incorporate both in one belt (thinner belt through pants loops
Highly unlikely you’ll see this because it’s an old video but have you ever thought of or heard of Buckaroo? They’re an Australian brand made of Australian leather and are next level
ps. Love the vids - from an apprentice chippy in Aus
I've always used occidental bags and the suspenders...I live in a town with a ton of building...I always go to pawn shops and find occidental bags...the employees dont know about them ir just dont care....I can buy used leather occidental bags all day long for 30-40 bucks....I just go home and sell them same day on eBay for 200 dollars all day long. ...people in the states love used leather bags...i can sell used for more than new...makes them look better on jobsite i guess....I've got three sets of bags in my garage..lol
throwing this up for my M.I.T students , fun , informative and they need to see Maori/Pacifica on the job believe me it helps.
Scott's dedicated pocket for a speed square is well worth the extra dough!
these guys are sooo high maintenance ... LOOK AT ME .... and i'm just trying to enjoy those nice taped and mudded joints on the wall. i'm here rewatching videos so .... miss ya.
Those little pockets that he said are to short for his pencil are for impact driver bits
Take a look at the hultafors quattro it’s really nice.
Hey Scott looking at getting a Taurus super yankee tool belt. Is there any way I can fit some suspenders on it. Cheers
Great Video. I use the pro trimmer belt from occidental. It's essentially the same as your 7 bag framer, just smaller. Only thing I wish it had is that neat little speed square slot yours has
Was that a hand plane for the dry wall that you hung? Or was it a tool specific for taking a little bit off of the drywall?
Whats Paerau Shoulder straps? I like the way they wrap around the shoulder/neck, and have the pencil holder. Can't find anything like it in Aus.
“Such an inspiration” 😂👏🏼😂👏🏼😂
I had one of those in new Zealand the Taurus!!
I use brown super Yankee with Milwaukee braces - same as Paereua
@@sadutk9380 😂😂
@@sadutk9380 please correct me very appologise
Occidental Leather.....by far the best!
This is not a job-it’s fun!!!!
Looking like no stress at all. Good crow !
You guys are awesome! From NY
Don't be offended Scott we know you're the main man but there's something about Paerau that shouts out he needs his own t-shirt line, with his name emblazoned on the front.
His personality, his cooking, the slightly esoteric nature of his name if you're not familiar with Maori, seriously I see cult.
No eye rolling now, think about it.
Actually, I see Paerau with his own worksite cookbook. Quick nutritious meals that can be whipped up on any building site.
Im a carpenter in the Netherland. Most of use use a homemade tool belt kost arround 20 euro. We call it spijkerzak.
Haha I use that too when I’m DIYing at home especially when you have to climb on a ladder. I used to have a drill holster on it too but then I switched to the Makita ones with the clip.
I smoked to much weed when I was young so I spent half my time looking for stuff I put down. Now with the screws/nails hammer, drill and tapemeasure on my belt I save 50% of my losing shit time 😁
Scott’s belt is ridiculously big for what he’s carrying. There will be days where he loads it up more, but imagine the weight .
Funny how you guys and the US all love tool belts but here on the UK you get laughed off the site wearing them. I love mine but I get a lot of stick lol
The martinez altas is hard to beat
BIt early in the morning to start comparing 'pocket' size eh?
We need more POTER! He's always hiding in the background lol
I got a bucket with ropes. Sling that thing on my back, and im good to go.
I call it the tool bucket.
I also carry a bucket for my mistakes on site, I call it the "Fuck it bucket"
I love your jobs man, you the best
Another great vid mate keep them coming
Hey Scott
What is the brand name of your hammer you use Cheers
does Paerau's suspenders work just aswell as yours whats the differences
No thanks to carrying all that weight around all day. I keep my nail bag setup as lightweight as possible all the time.
Belt:
1x 2 pocket pouch.
Hammer holder.
Tape holder.
Chisel + pencil holder combo.
Tools:
1x hammer
1x tape measure
1x combo square.
1x pincers
2x chisels
2x pencils
2x nail punch
vzgsxr I'm pretty much the same. It's the way to go, these guys have 3 tools ( including the hammer ) to pull out nails !
I prefer going lightweight better on the body. Each to their own
you inspire me to be a carpenter
The tool belt numbers you quote are ASTONISHINGLY expensive- all the prices you mention in your videos are. Do we just have it that cheap in the US due to bulk sales- or is it an exchange rate thing? Here in northern CA, a good trim carpenter makes around $40/ hour, not sure what union rates are. My 20 volt dewalt impact driver cost $150, the 20 volt 5.25" [13cm] mini skill saw was about $200, my big worm drive was about $160 [in 1989]
Everything that has to by imported is expensive... very expensive.
From gear to gadgets to cars to food, if it's imported it's expensive.
New Zealand is a far away island after all.
New Zealand Dollar =/= USD
Multiply SCott's quotes by 2/3 to get USD.
I wonder if they get hit by a VAT tax that makes everything astronomically more expensive
15% GST (Goods and Services Tax).
Americans have it very good in lots of ways, land is cheap, plenty of room and low tax on consumables. In Ireland there's 23% vat on all purchase and 13% on services. When I lived and worked in Boston M.A the vat rate was 7%! Granted that was 20 years ago but I'd imagine the gap remains similar. Americans don't have a bloated "social waster" system to pay for! 🙄
TheToolnut -- Build the wall and keep it that way, and perhaps build one around California also.
Possibly an oxy leather rig as a Christmas present for your second in command Scott??
Occidentals are the shit! Best tool belt IMO
Sorry if this has been asked, Where did Paereau get his support braces from?
Lovintools
You pay for what you get. Yes Scott’s the occidental is more expensive but he’s took belt is still in good condition. Just use and wear but he’s has outlasted Pareaus and will be the only tool belt he ever needs as well.
I just wanted to ok! Lol the real meaning of why we buy and tell our wife’s we NEED it
Those occidental ones are very nice though, yours may need some leather oil on it though.
i think considering the amount of rainy days they have in their videos they could benefit from a light waxing as well to just keep some moisture out
Good call!
Scott Brown Carpentry - Neats foot oil once a year and "Bordeaux" coloured shoe cream does the trick! Both add moisture to the leather and add water resistance. The cream also makes them look almost new. Buy both at a shoe repair shop or any horse (saddle) leather shop.
I have the same tool belt setup in black leather with suspenders (Canadian: 399.99 for the belt and 169.99 for the suspenders, both plus taxes at a crazy 14.975%). My shoulders were screaming help from the belt's weight on the suspenders when I'd keep the belt loose for a long while... bought "hip buddies" and tataaaa... no more hip aches because the buddies cushioned them and no more shoulder aches because the belt was properly tightened and the suspenders would share the weight with the belt!
Neats foot oil, "Bordeaux" coloured shoe cream and hip buddies ;)
the little pockets that he said were to small for anything...they are for drill/impact driver bits
What brand are the shoulder straps that Paereau wears?
Is that available here in the philippines? If yes where?
Have you seen the diamondback tool belts with hammer sheaths and flat bar sheath
I've seen some photos. What is it like having the hammer between your side and the nail bag?
@@ScottBrownCarpentry there is plenty of padding so it's not a sharp edge on your thigh I dont notice it. I dont carry a flat bar.. I have occidental fat lip also it holds alot more fasteners then the diamondback.
Where dd you score your harness attachment for the harness from
Alright the scotty boy lets talk about the Japanese chisel you used in the rotten post video. Where did you get it and who made the little beauty
It's a beauty all right. I bought it from Gaston at Piranha Tools . According to his website It's a Kinari Nomi paring chisel from Fujikawa, Japan.
piranhatools.co.nz/products/kinari-nomi-with-white-oak-handle-fujikawa?variant=1059285841
Ahh its fujikawa i had an idea it would be. You do some cool stuff scott. I like the fact that theres no ego in your vids makes them easy to watch. Good work mate keep going
Where do you guys get those tool belt straps from in NZ ?? Any help
I get backpain from the suspenders. I had the snicker belt and though built belt. Now i have milwaukee belt. Also backpain with suspenders. So no suspenders for me.
Kans Loos - I seen these models and most ppl who have them complain of exactly that. I think it has to do with the belt not being cinched properly and not sharing the weight with the suspenders... essentially, all the weight is on the shoulders! The belt on these models is not very sturdy and loses it shape quickly when the pouches are loaded up. The 3" belt on the Occidental's is very strong and won't lose its shape once tightened.
I have the same setup as Scott and also felt a lot of pain on my shoulders at days end like you... I wore my belt quite loosely and all the weight rode on the suspenders and ultimately, my shoulders... I got hip buddies and the problem was solved since they cushion the hips nicely when I tighten the belt just enough to share the belt's weight between hips and shoulders. The occidental suspenders are very well made and tough. They are the best I've ever used!
But where does the drill go?
Good video!!~~^^ from korea
How would you purchase these tool belts ?
what folding ruler is that??
super,gracias,saludos desde chihuahuamexico
does anyone use buckeroo brand belts? I’m considering them vs. the occidental bags.
Yeah the back support belt is really good
when installing gib on walls why not use fixing glue like gib one to eliminate screwing all over the board excluding edges? saves the plasterer's time as well. just a thought. anyways nice belts. chur bro
I wonder if that is legal in California? They are nutz about earthquake here. [duh] For some reason, when I worked in New York, they made us put 2 screws 2" [5cm] apart in every location, edge and field. Very weird.
not sure bro. different countries / states building rules most likely differ, and i guess your building products could be slightly or a lot different. NY sounds like overkill lol! though it does seem very similar to how we screw off braceline gib; eg from the GIB handbook:
- All four corners of a GIB® plasterboard bracing element must be fastened at 50mm, 100mm, 150mm, 225mm and 300mm from the edge of the sheet
- Bracing element perimeter is then fastened at150mm centres
- Fasteners must be no closer than 12mm from the paper enclosed edge and no closer than18mm from sheet ends or cut edges of sheets
apologies if i've gone overboard explaining the screw spacing lol.
in NZ we have GIBFix One which i like to use as it makes for a cleaner finish and eliminates screws popping out if applied correctly. of course when doing ceilings, i apply glue and screws everywhere all over the sheet. also take care to ensure you are not screwing into an area where you dobbed some glue. in Wellington, we get a few earthquakes too, and i have had no issues with the glue holding firm nicely. chur
What brand/model are the braces that you two are wearing?
Occidental leather
