I did that back In the day, bolt my straps to my belt. Remember, some people put a rivet on the X on the straps on the back... the suspenders come with one. I keep my hammer in the front loop, you need to use a wooden handle I like axe handle 12oz stiletto titanium

Good video. Chicago screws can open up new worlds of design without need to hire a leatherworker. I have a totally customized Frankenstein tool belt setup, comprising components from Occidental, Diamondback, Akribis, Atlas 46, Buckaroo, and even Menards. My wife, a seamstress, has even indulged my obsession by working through five evolving versions of a work vest, which I have designed to serve as a wearable field desk, strictly limited to small layout and marking tools, along with notepad and cell phone. Velcro pockets for thin magnets (removable for washing) are sewn into strategic spots so I don't need to put so many miscellaneous fasteners, etc. into my mouth at awkward moments. Your daily carry and mine share many preferences. Small world...

    Hey Scott
The square base is wider and around 22mm so you can mark half way or centre on a 45mm thick piece of timber as most framing is dressed for this, really helpful when pitching a roof

I hope you have a speedy recovery Scott, I feel your Pain! I rolled my ankle two weeks ago steeping out my back door onto a low step, took a trip to A+E for an x ray and thankfully I didnt have the broken bone issue you have so didnt have to wear the boot. Ive torn the ligaments though so my whole foot and shin have been swollen and bruised every colour in the rainbow. All the best from Scotland mate.

I tend to cut more & more timber these days using the speed square as the saw guide. It saves a heap of time going out to where the mitre saw is set up & is very accurate.

  • @ryanmdowling86

Nice to see someone have their tape On The proper side. I always find it funny when people keep their tape on the same side as they’re handed. To be quick and efficient you need to have your dominant hand ready to use your marking tool. Your square has a larger heel because it’s a better set up for framing when your wood has more wane on it, it’s still able to reach deep enough to reference the perpendicular surface of the wood.

Awesome. Thank you. I have a very similar all leather occidental setup, but for drywall. I have a little leather/metal hook thing for a gun. It and the last loop of my suspenders sit nearest to open end of the belt and would like to fall off. I'd been using a zip tie to keep it all on. BUT I actually have some of those Chicago bolts and didn't really thing to use them to fasten it all together. Very awesome as now I'll actually be able to take my belt apart if needed without wasting zip ties.

A note on the Milwaukee speed square... Here in the US, 2x4 framing lumber can have a rounded edge, the wider end on that square helps to get a nice square purchase on the boards to get clean marks and cuts. I have a few cheapo squares from Empire and Harbor Freight, but after I got that Milwaukee square the others sleep on the bench. I got mine in a two pack around Christmas time for about ten bucks. Good buy.

I have the leather only straps, but instead of using the leather loop in the front I hook the front of the suspenders on the center of each actual pouch.
It was a game changer for me, and lasted close to 10 years, still going strong.
I found it brought the front of the bags up so they would't sag much. Way more comfortable in my opinion!

Nice video. I run a very similar setup. I pieced my bags together so I have the 3 pouch version of your left bag and the 2 pouch version of your right without the little tape holder thingy. I did switch to the diamondback belt which kind of has 2 belts to keep bags from flying off and having to play 100 nail pickup every time I'm trying to put on my belt. Before I got that belt I did the same thing that you did with the occidental belt. I also mounted a diamondback hammer holster to my right bag. It took a bit to get used to since I ran my loop in the back for 10+ years. It's especially nice when you have something you're holding overhead and sometimes that hammer being in the back can get tricky to reach. But really the only tool differences are that I don't carry the little saw/knife or a folding rule and I run one of the flat scraper style trim bars instead of the little prybar. That was one of the best things I started carrying around, I use it for a chisel, scraper, a flat punch, obviously prying. Just a great all around tool for every type of carpentry. But from a fellow old skateboarding carpenter Get yourself healed up and have a great little vacation.

Have a great, and well deserved break! I'd be interested in seeing you pull back the curtain a little on the video side of your work. Do you have some "no pencil marks" principles that make your videos what they are? For me they are set apart by a lot of attention to the photography - each shot tends to be really beautiful. And in the DIY genre the opposite tends to be true -- it's usually just about filming the process with zero attention to the form. There's also a lovely consistent laid-back vibe - the music, the interstitial scenes, the low stress workplace attitude. I love it and I bet the rest of your subscribers do too, but I wonder if it's as satisfying from the creation end - that is, do you find yourself getting curious about experimenting with different styles?

    A friendly tip for ya….hope don’t mind
0:08 I’ve got one of those “pump up air compression” boots. Broke right foot while back and had to wear for 8 weeks. Then went to a “shoe” for 4-6 weeks, and after that, back to my reg orthotic shoes…..hurt paying for orthotic shoes and inserts; as I’d rather have paid for new tools, & for the cost; coulda got A lot of new tools.
As uncomfortable has is wearing that boot, does help; just a tip from someone who wore. Be mindful have walking a lot, and it making your normal “gate” diff when walking and working; especially on those “hips” and lower back. If need be, medical massage and a good chiropractor that also is open to “alternative medicine”, as could help mitigate pain a d issues possibly could have down the road.

Something consistent I see in veteran tool bag lay outs is that things have been parred down heavily to what actually gets used consistently. Despite the trade apprentices always feel obliged to make up for inexperience with more tools. As experience grows, tools get shed.

There's a fine line between carrying less in the pouch and not bringing what you need to do your job. There's nothing more frustrating than working with someone who always asks to borrow the same thing. If you're asking to borrow the something more than 3 times go to the bloody store or take it back out of the shed.

I second most of your tool belt content. However as mentioned in another comment; the Hultafors chisel is good for banging and demo work. You should try to get hold of Mora’s equivalent, it’s excellent and keeps its edge very well. It’s my go to, and also for sharpening the carpenters pencil. The classic carpenters pencil can be used for thin hairline marking woodworking accuracy and then shift to a bold line for rough marking, and you’ll be brute to break the tip 😉 The Pica stuff I only use as a general pencil. And yeah, that small Hultafors (or other..) pry bar is invaluable!
One piece I forgot to mention; I’ve recently added a 150mm Starrett combination square, highly recommended!
