    Here's one for you.
I have purchased a lot of tools in my time. I always tell her, you have to spend money to make money. Hit her with the "when I'm on my death bed, I'll want more time, not more money". I recently bought the $2000 odd Hilti laser. I was really trying to hide the receipt, but she saw it. She was going in at me, "YOU SPENT $2000 ON A LASER?!?"
I told her.. time is more valuable than money. That laser saves me an incredible amount of time, which means I can get home earlier to spend time with you and make you dinners etc.
I slept on the couch for a week.

Not blowing smoke, but for me the easiest way to get new tools has been watching the videos featuring Gaston with my partner. There's always something that he'll show off that she thinks is super cool (or super cute, in the case of the mini systainer). Once there's something she wants to get it would be silly not to also grab the other things I've "needed for a while"; saves on shipping, doesn't it?

So whenever I need to (want to) get a new tool (as we're renovating our currently renovating our house) I ask my wife to check if her brother has what I need. I can then "go around his place to borrow it" and return with said tool, (def get rid of the packaging on the way home). It's been 18 months and I still have "her brothers" 18v Makita impact driver hammer drill and framing nail gun set in my garage!

The Systainer TLoc system is such a game changer. I started off many years ago with the sys1 and was reasonable happy.
Then I bought TLoc and thought, "Oh nice, it locks onto the Sys1.
Own two TLoc's and you start to understand them. Three or four and you are speeding up your work flow and definitely the packing up of you tools every evening.
Start adding the roll carts and your work life suddenly becomes easier.

I am usually always super nice to hubby, make him a cup of coffee, have the dishes done before he gets home and ask him what else he would like to buy for his windsurfers. Now for tool hiding, i've got many schemes, but a recent one was to levy a bunnings and mitre10 price match on some big purchases and use the deficit money to buy myself a makita router! We're building a deck and had encountered an old concrete set of steps that needed lots of additional bracketry so it was a hefty purchase and i'd worked out there would be enough of a deficit if I stuck my neck out and price matched to leave a gap in the invoice to get the router. The router was price matched too getting it down in price!

My tool hiding story - I bought the DeWalt DCL050 and hid it from my partner for working on the car. I knew she wouldn't approve of spending that much on a light, so hid it for months until we had a power cut. When we eventually did have one, it was so useful at illuminating entire rooms that she simply couldn't be mad at me - I even got a little smile from her when I said "if I hadn't snuck this purchase, then you would have been forced to light candles all around the house". Didn't have to hide it anymore after that evening!

In the car with the misses, hand on ten and two, safety is paramount. Telling a riveting tale about a 'cool new tool' that would make my life at work so much easier, but unfortunately I could neither afford nor could I justify the purchase. Accountant calls; I must answer via handsfree. Safety is paramount. "blah blah blah, your business must spend X amount of dollars by X date otherwise you'd basically be giving the Australian tax office free money'. Missus turns to me with a sincere smile exclaiming that I deserve the cool new tool.

Includes pictures to give you ideas for layouts and such. If you are looking for a guide, this is not exactly what you want. But if you are trying to familiarize yourself with the way that pole barn building and other out buildings, are made, then this will work just as you need it to. I mostly enjoy the dynamic between Scott and Gaston. Good energy bouncing back and forth, even when Scott is doing flips with the Douglas.
No wife or husband here, but my flatmate and I both just started pre-trades at Polytech. Living on the student allowance doesn’t really leave much for new tools, so instead of hiding new tools, it’s hiding what I sold to buy said new tool. Only happened a few times so far, but it goes something like this - “What have you sold? What’s missing from the flat? Where has my monstera plant gone?”
Thanks for the videos Scott, and thanks for adding “or husband” in there too! I am very excited/nervous to step into the building industry (as a female) and it’s so good to hear you talking about/including female builders in the dialogue. Thanks for the tautoko!

    Great tool time episode Scott!
I truly enjoy these new and unique tool sneak peaks.
Have always caught myself growing up in the home center/hardware store scoping out the tools. I don't think I'll ever let go of it.
Great to see you setting into the new home.
Sending you the best from LI, NY!
~ Keep up the great work ~

I bought a very expensive camera (Canon R6) for my photography work I probably didn’t need it, could’ve just lived with the one that I already had but my excuse was ohhh nahhh I’ve got heaps of jobs coming up and this is necessary look at these bells and whistles (talk lots about technical camera stuff to make her think it’s worth it) it worked and I reckon this camera has returned the investment! Awesome purchase 😂😂

I waited till a package arrived at the door for her and after I ask what she's bought, I slip in that I bought a new Katipo tool belt, she'll always ask if I really need it and I reply the same with what she bought haha. The setup is awesome, you should give it a go Scott, my Dalluge slides in the hammer sheath really nice, not sure how yours will do with the grip on it, would be good to know how it does, cheers Scott and Gaston!

My method is to either pretend "it's the same one I had before" or tell her I need it to complete whatever renovation she wants to do next, to the point that now when she wants something done it's followed up by "you can get a new tool to help!" because we all know every job needs a new tool ;)

Gaston is the real gadget man.
My dad has a tendency of buying all sorts of random tools, most of which he doesn't know how to use and they tend to stay in their boxes for a long time. This works a charm when I need a new tool (that dad hasn't already bought). "Honey, I just found it at dad's, pretty sure he bought it a couple years ago and never used it. Yeah it's like brand new!"
Keen to see Scott use all the new tools around the house on little jobs.

I bought it because it will save so much time in the long run and really it's part of the job and it will last at least as long as your Bernina Sewing machine!

My method for buying a new tool is to write someone else's initials on it, rub a dirty rag over it so it looks old and then say I got it super cheap at a garage sale 😎 works like a charm.

I dont really hide things away from my partner like new tools as long as she knows its well worth the money spent to make more money shes always on board which is a plus. But she does get fascinated and interested in how they work. She and i would call Gaston the go go gadget guy lol. His tools are awesome. Great vid btw 👌🏽

PRIZE GIVEAWAY STORY: I've recently finished building two decks at home (total: 30sqm), but needed a way to rip down decking boards into thinner strips and on angles. I was originally using a Makita circular saw, however I wasn't happy with the accuracy of cuts. So I bought a table saw from Mitre10 to use for ripping down thinner boards etc... When my wife saw the table saw in the garage, straight away I was in trouble. However I was quick to let her know that it was a tool that was necessary to finish off the decks safely and I can use it to make her garden planter boxes next. So, a good strategy of mine is to come up with a reason we can both benefit from having a new tool.

I always found the "safety" angle is good for a reason to purchase new tools. "Why did you buy a new table saw when you already have one?" Answer: "It's unsafe and the new one has great safety features". "Oh, ok".

Sooooo hope my wife doesn’t read this. I have two basic MO’s: the first is to buy a specific tool for a specific project, and then just demonstrate to her how cool and efficient that tool is at doing that thing. The second is to buy something, usually an item I’ve investigated/coveted for a while but don’t have a pressing need for it at the time, but that’s on a super good deal. I buy it, then stash it in the back of the shed. By the time I have a need to use it, if questioned about it I can legitimately say “Oh this? Yeah, nah - I’ve had this for ages”. Hello plasma cutter.

My story. Wife generally accepts my purchases as they translate to work being completed around the house. I finally convinced her that I needed a rolling toolbox cabinet to store all my tools and would make moving to our new house easier. I knew for sure they weren't going to fit in the one so I had no choice but to purchase a second. p.s. going to purchase the POCKET TAPER GAUGE. What a cool little tool.

I came home after purchasing a brand new Makita LS1219, thinking that my wife was still at work. Turned out that she left early because she was feeling crook and she greeted me in the garage. When she enquired about the "necessity" of it (I already had 2 older mitre saws), I quietly reminded her about the multitude of parcel deliveries she had received last year, that I never questioned her about. She looked at me, nodded, asked if I wanted a cup of tea as the kettle had just boiled, then went back inside... I quickly hid the new drill combo kit, I had also purchased, in the back of one of my cabinets and went inside.
