I really appreciate your video editor. I know most people here are focused on the engineering, but your editor deserves respect too. The amount of time he spends motion tracking objects just to highlight whatever Mike is talking about is very impressive. That stuff takes a lot of time to do.
I work in construction, and very seldom do I see this amount of attention to detail anymore. Skilled trades are a dying art. I'm glad to see there are people still out there honing their craft. Very inspiring, Mike.
There are still a lot of skilled people out there but then they are given a time limit and a budget. Its really hard sometimes to convince the people spending the money that spending more in the beginning will be cheaper in the long term. It’s also another skill to understand which things will need to last long term and which things will be reimagined and altered or renovated in 10years.
Looking real good. Very surprised and glad to see no one has fallen down into the Deep end of the Pool, with no Safety Railings in place. One can get so consumed in one's work, take a step back, and fall into the Pool.
Excellent observation. I'm also attune to safety, contingency, and hypotheticals. Most people don't like our kind!
Ive never said this before, but there should be some more safety measures on that jobsite. Perhapse a fense around the top of that pool?
Your lack of temporary barriers (fall protection) around that 24 foot deep pool makes me nervous, Mike. Safety first!
27’ at its deepest…
Safety third!
Agree !!! I worked at LBNL (Feds) and you couldn't get closer to an edge/drop then 4' without being on a lanyard.
or just post a no falling sign...
@@flynlr "Absolutely no falling to your death allowed. People caught violating this rule will be prosecuted."
I can really appreciate not only the quality of whatever you build Mike, but also the redundancy that you use to back everything up. You and your family will have a beautiful home to be proud of. Well done Sir.....
Also the editing in the video is amazing, so easy to follow and understand
Retired now but I flew Lear Jets in the lower 48, then I flew in Alaska for 10 years, and then flew cargo DC-10's and MD-11's internationally and worldwide. I have flown around the world as well. No longer flying due to a heart issue. It was great to see the world thru my own eyes...retired in Florida.
You hit the nail on the head with your OCD comment! Beautiful skills and workmanship.
Overkill!?!? Nonsense. It's physics. Math and Engineering. If it's worth doing, it's worth overdoing. :)
Over, over, over, over done.... Understatement of the century.
engineers want the thing they build 99.99999999999 because 100% is imposible. but then if its a comercial product the bean counters get involved and they bring it down to 49,9999 because they need recuring sales more then quality in their opinion. after all if 99,9999 the product might not fail in their time frame.
This house can withstand a bunker buster bomb 😂
Sorry to say but I think you under done the the main point of leak that being plastic pipe joint . Why 3:38 because it is only tested to 8bar that doesn't include the joint with a thin film of epoxy. Find the point of mass pressure .i.e pump to surface and work back.
…not just a 100’ pyramid project… this is GESA pyramid sized project.
Awesome project! One thing I noticed is the lack of railings or things to prevent somebody from falling into the pool or off the side into the yard. Would hate to see someone get hurt. Only happy memories associated with the pool ya know haha
Edit: Also, I absolutely love the sprinkler valve system you set up! Getting things done correctly and planning ahead for the future is always satisfying to see.
Do you have the ability to pump water to a fire truck? Having lived in fire country, hydrants at the end of the line will go dry during high demand. Pools are life savers.
My favorite part about you Mike is you have so much experience in the things you are talking about.
I likely won’t build anything on this scale but I have learned a TON from this series that I might use when I build my personal pool and sprinkler systems
You are just an inspiration. If you can do anything better you do. Changed the way I think about doing things.
Mike, you either have a team of 100 helping you design or you think like a 100 brains. You are really unlike anyone I've ever seen. This home is unbelievable!
I have aphantasia so I cannot picture things in my mind, I think Mike has the opposite of this to an amazing degree where he would be able to plan out every detail!
@@deets_ i get what you are saying. i can see trigonometry but i cant do it on paper. that being said i couldn't began to be halft the brain mike is.
It’s the latter
Mike, amazing job on this project! I do have to say though, looking at the work area it seems pretty dangerous with the fall hazard next to the pool. If someone were to trip they could potentially go over that edge. It may be worth putting up a temporary barrier. Seems like overkill but it could save someone.
OSHA would have a field day here! The lack of perimeter and fall prevention is beyond belief!! Sorry but it’s the law!!! You’d hate to see someone hurt or killed on your ambitious project!!!
@@davidyoder6174 Oh OSHA... the single greatest cause of ballooning costs and time to every industry they touch while making minuscule to negligible improvements. OH wait thats just gov in general! Heres an idea... don't be stupid!
@@davidyoder6174 with his assets...... Yeah, I'd be running the site by the book.
actually, he probably has nothing in his name lol
I’ve had a bad experience with slip fittings, and had to replace about 12 of them. Your mounting location is incredibly solid, so I doubt you’ll ever have a problem. I love how functional, and bulletproof you’re making your new house!
Were you using them on low pressure systems like the sprinkler or in drainage lines when they failed?
@@JRs-Garage that’s exactly what I was using them on.
at least if they do fail it's in a room with a floor drain
I love this project. I’m concerned about the unprotected 24’ fall during the work phase. That’s a long way and it’s easy to make a misstep
He could have a cheap temporary solution after tiling install a big air cushion at the bottom😅
I was just wondering, why no safety barrier at the pool during construction.
Mike @ 9:50 - "Boy, I love this place." LOL, you better love it! Great job, man!
Got my scrappy. Looks great. Also thanks for the griplock tie. Wanted to see one before I buy and will probably be getting some soon now that I know. Have fun
Thank you for supporting!! 😊
Awesome job by your editor with the motion tracking to highlight the different areas that you are mentioning
I love that sprinkler manifold design. Great job in the thinking it through. I've inherited several sprinkler systems and experienced the problems you spoke of. Pretty sure my shovel is also a sprinkler timer wire detector. Also, gophers love filling up those access boxes with their tailings. Your house is incredible but I notice you not only have a good crew working but your family is putting in the sweat equity also. Great example.
I think it is a bit overkill. I didn't see a backflow preventer or pressure regulator.. Plus as a sprinkler guy I have had 3 of those grey Mechanical engineering fittings fail on me this year... Did I tighten them to much? it was always on hunter valves. maybe the hunter valves thread centerline and surface were not perpendicular. ALso where does all that water drain to if there is a big failure in the pool or sprinkler line. Is this a curbless room? what would flood if water gets our of that room.?
I love that you're actually focusing on the cool engineering in this house, not all the other boring normal house build stuff
I really loved the improved editing techniques, subtitles, and other graphic effects. It really ads to the explanations that Mike is giving!!
Suggestion: if the orange highlight graphics disappeared faster, we could take a better look at the awesome concrete structures!
Incredible attention to detail!
I'm looking forward to the house/pool/sprinklers being finished so (a) we can see the engineering marvels in their completed forms, and (b) so we can get back to aircraft building videos! 🙂 Bring on Draco X!
Get back to work, Mike. You inspire us all. 🏅
I’m with you. The airplane stuff was much more interesting… I’ve been mostly skipping this stuff. I hope no one lives down stream of this pool in case of failure.
@scottluther6699 you're missing out. He's brilliant!
Love the poo/house videos and live to see the next one. To me the plane videos ... Yawn.
Wow. Only one concern. Surprised you’re not required to have safety barriers given what appears to be a high risk of falling down that hole.
Yeap. Huge liability and safety hazard. At least get some harnesses and ropes....
Falls are no1 cause of death and disability on construction sites.
SAME! I'm in CA and CAL-OSHA would be going all in on fines!! Be careful!!
Leak avoidance is more important than lives of everyone around the project including himself😅
It was the first thing I noticed. It is CRAZY to me that there were no barriers around that pit. He has family and contractors walking around it all the time.
It is exciting to see the progress being made on your "pool". When it's done you should have many happy hours over the years enjoying using it. You would appreciate knowing my granddaughter Aliyah, who had her 16th birthday this September, is enrolled in Ground School at the Billy Bishop airport in Owen Sound, Ontario. She will complete early in the new year and then will begin her flight training. I'm so excited for her.
Your daughter's name refers to criminality
Beyond fantastic! Its not often i sit with a open mouth and being mindblown but you sir do that every time you post something!
LOVE that irrigation valve setup. Winterizing without a compressor is some next level stuff. Get a Rachio 16 valve irrigation controller, not a "timer". They are the best. No, I do not work for Rachio, lol.
Mike , I love the slip joint on the sprinkler system great idea !
And having it inside is also fantastic! I wish more people would do that so much less maintenance in the long term
Im just curious how you run the pipes through the wall out, without having the risk of water leaking along them inside. You would need a sleeve on every one of them, which is difficult when you have a bunch of them next to each other
This is my favorite series on RUclips right now! I get so excited seeing the progress and updates everytime as you get closer to your end goal! Thanks for sharing the journey
Have you considered installing a temp safety rail? Can’t wait to see the finished results!
IF…. you sleep, I can imagine you’re still thinking up new best practices on how to do things, and designing the smallest details. You’re absolutely a genius dynamo!
I think Mike had something to do with all the ancient megalithic monuments in a past lifetime. Just a hunch! Awesome house. I love it. Thanks
Been waiting impatiently for the next video, thanks Mike!
Yes, block off the deep end of the pool with orange cones a few feet off the edge of the deep pool. Other than that what a majestic construction project you are doing.
Man I love the overengineering of everything you build I hope you take the time out to enjoy the pool LOL!
Can't wait to see the finished product!
An unexpected but greatly appreciated Wednesday upload! Made sure there were no meetings and put the phone on hold so I have 23 minutes of uninterrupted viewing pleasure 🙂 I love the little details you put into the project, even squaring the bolt pattern of the coupler to the wall. Keeping up the great work as usual Mike, let us all get back to work!
It’s good that you turned the valve square to the wall to rid the glued connection from any air bubbles. I was always taught to twist the freshly glued joint immediately 1/4-1/8” for that reason. I like the system, nice work 👍👍
1/4-1/8” seems too little. This video suggests 1/4-1/8 of a TURN: www.google.com/search?q=preventing+air+bubbles+in+PVC+connections&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en-us&client=safari#fpstate=ive&vld=cid:a584c589,vid:xR7Ri8YVBqU,st:0
I need it ready for when I Fly in around January to go Snow Skiing. I also need to get on the guest list for the opening party!! Thanks in Advance. Congrats man. Looking awesome!!
Being a perfectionist usually creates other quirky disorders for most people, but it only results in superior products and build quality for you Mike. Thanks for sharing another video on your amazing home build.
Outstanding work. Maybe add an App based control to the drain valve, when you're traveling and that unexpected Utah freeze hits.
I got some new goodies. You are the only RUclipsr I will buy from. Got some shirts and a Draco (Xmas) before. Got a scrappy and a hoodie and my wife a second shirt too. Thanks for all you do in aviation. Looking forward to watching the next build. Take care and Merry Christmas.
Mike and I both said, “aww, that’s so nice!” at the same time. Thank you for supporting and watching the videos. And Merry Christmas to you and your wife.
Lots of good progress in this video.👍

MiKeeY !!! that sucker is gonna last 500 years lol. Darn good job there my friend. I just had to get a mini scrapy hehe that thing is soo cute hehehe. I would not be suprised if Dubai Sheik gets u to build one for him !!!! The level of thought u put into every single nut and bolt is astounding !!! And your plans for the airport and involvement with the new pilots is just the best stuff ever. ThAnKs For ALL u do !!! U know the drill !!!!
Glad you got a mini Scrappy, thanks for supporting. All our best.
Dreams are coming true, and it is awesome to see. Great health to you and yours.
having an engineers mind is awesome,
I'm glad I'm not the only one who believes the way yard plumbing is done is wrong! I like the idea of using the slip sleeves, I'm definitely stealing that idea, thank you!
I thought I had OCD…until I started watching Mike. Now I worry that my OCD isn’t good enough! Love your dedication and attention to EVERY detail.
Amazingh amount of fore-thought has gone into your project. Kudo's to you. I would be really interested to see how this works out in 5+ years. All the best with your continuing project.
Everything Patey, looking awesome as usual.
This has been absolutely incredible to watch this build! Thank you so much for sharing. Keep em coming!!
" I'm a little OCD"... ya think? freaking excellent design, execution, and savage attention to detail. Thanks for "teaching" the right way to do things.
As a private pilot who is a plumber its fun seeing you stepping into my realm lol
I have watched all the videos of you making this pool. So amazing to see it come alive. And I love the ornament.
Mike, I like how you colored your explanations as you went through your video very nice can’t wait to see your house done
wow this was wild to watch
It was so nice of you and Chandra to take a couple hours off for me and Jitske for a hangar tour and diner, despite such a busy schedule. Thanks again! 😀 Oh, and awesome job as always! 💪🏻
I love watching an engineer build a proper house with proper design. I, as a ME, tried specifying a house that I wanted building and it turned out 3 times the cost of how a builder would build it. I did not have the money to do it but its great watching an engineer with the money properly build a home.
Mike, your irritation system looks great. Stay safe, J
Those tiles along the top of the pool are stunning. Killer job Mike
Turning the coupler so that the bolt pattern is parallel to the wall does have some benefit as it allows easier access and a larger swing arc on those 2 bolts than the 1 bolt rear bolt would have if the coupling was turned 90 degrees. Mike might not have thought of this while installing it on camera, but folks that have built a lot of things tend to have an intuition about this kind of thing. Sometimes it doesn't look right because it's *not* right.
Absolutely.
Nice work! I like your attention to detail!
Peak White man. Absolutely Glorious. I never thought I could be so impressed by or jealous of a sprinkler system.
Just incredible, love the attention to detail and the experience you use to make logical and meaningful changes to make life more simple.
Just picked up on your project. Absolutely amazing.
I appreciate how flat that backyard is going to be!
the sprinklers into the basement is awesome
Amazing. I built my pool in 2004 by myself except for the plaster. I used 1" thick quartzite slate for my pool's entrance and it looks just as amazing as the day I installed it. When the sun hits the stone it looks so cool under water. Those repair couplings (expandos) are pretty solid, we use them often at work for water line repairs when three's not other options. I would have used 24v AC motorized stainless steel or brass valves and not those rainbird plastic venturi valves. Also consider installed a debri trap upstream the irrigation valves to prevent tiny rocks from keeping the venturi flap from sticking open because the debri traps you have are installed wrong.
AWESOME content as always, Mike! And the highlights on the video really helped, thanks to the video editor
Love keeping up with the build. Great video, the editor needs a raise!
Thank you for taking us with you on your life adventures, project management, and philosophical thoughts about engineering things the right way; engineers minds are the best. You’re awesome brother, so please keep the interesting and entertaining videos coming.. Chilly
Amazing work mate. Such an inspiration with the way you think about things.
This build is absolute madness and so informational 👌
Seriously, is this guy a genius. Amazing.
Amazing. Love the redundancy!
Looks sooooo good!!!!!! Love your attention to detail
I love it. Coming together great Mike! Your vids are def a inspiration to work harder. I tend to have the analysis to paralysis lol, I think a lot of us do. Would be awesome to see a vid from you on idk, "just get it done" etc. Got a house with a lot of problems and I hate starting jobs without the perfect plan/materials selection/etc. You seem like you got it all figured out, but I suspect you do your research and just roll with your plan even if you make mistakes. Cant see it any other way with such a large job unless you got people in the background planning and helping you execute perfectly... lots of this your doing on your own or have your daughter helping you haha. Love it man. Keep the energy up.
Been waiting for an update! Nice surprise!
I have a love/hate relationship with OCD. It makes EVERYTHING I do take more time than I planned for. It does make all my Clients happy in the end though. I would love to work for someone like Mike. I worked for the builder (Home Sweet Home by Mitch) that built the home Mike is/was living in while he built his home and always wanted to meet Mike. Unfortunately, I parted ways before that happened.
Love the progress you are making. Fascinating
I can’t wait to see this finish! Amazing house man!
thank you for sharing this with us we love you mike
Idea: Let a Guitarist and/or singer do their magic in the deep end of your pool now there is no water in it yet to enjoy the natural reverb. Fun memories and video for you and awesome for them!
Really need to collaborate with obsessed garage, you and Matt would really be a good conversation at minimum, both obsessed with the best way to do things, he can set up your garage or consult on the best products. Multiple projects that you both could brainstorm on certain problems that affect general life.
This is my most fav new channel in my feed. and it was this build and then i rabbit holed into the aviation stuff....
What a great setup for the sprinkler system!!! Love it!
Wow, the editing has leveled
absolute mind blowing amount of thought and work🤯👍
Put an air line to your sprinklers and then you can use the air to blow out the lines for winter. Between that and the depth you will never have an issue with them freezing and leaking. Never mind I love your sprinkler manifold.
Insane.
Mike, you might consider placing a nice framed Decompression Table on the wall at the deepest part of the pool. And/or some graphics on the wall that scale the depth of the pool to the oceans the bottom being the Marianas Trench and the depths of note in the water column. Such as the depth of the Titanic, height of Mt Everest, etc. Just some light reading while fetching the quarter Uncle Mark tossed in.
Love this series
When an aircraft engineer designs and build an irrigation system. A thing of beauty.
Love to see the great progress!
coolest pool ever
Much respect 🙏 to and your team. I worked construction and have an all around feel of your project with your team ...🙌🙌🙌 Respect 🙏
