    This game literally changed Boise State as a university. Before, it was more of a commuter school and now it is more traditional. Fall of 2008 came the winningest QB in college football history, Kellen Moore. He went 50 - 3, with the three losses by a combined total of 5 points. Now he is the Offensive Coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys.

    My family are lifelong BSU fans (dad grew up just a few minutes walk from Bronco Stadium). After the 2-point conversion to win it my auntie (probably 60-65 years old) disappeared for a bit in all the excitement and then comes back and says “I just kissed 3 random men, we were all too excited.” Hard to explain what this game meant to a lot of long time Boise State fans.

    One of the most fairy tale endings EVER in college football.
    That touchdown to end the regulation time is still the FINEST example of a 'hook and ladder' play that you will ever see. Perfect execution...and the Oklahoma safety (the guy chasing the eventual ball carrier to the end zone, #11) is wrong footed just ONE STEP too far inside when the lateral was made. You can also see that if the safety was able to prevent the straight run to the corner...the quarterback Zabransky is following the play at speed to act as a potential pitch option if necessary. It's just BEAUTIFUL play design and perfectly executed by the Broncos.

    Chris Peterson stayed with the team through the 2013 season. His record at Boise St. was 92-12, with 2 wins in the Fiesta Bowl. He then accepted the head coach position at University of Washington, where he led that team to the 2016 BCS playoffs, where they lost to Alabama in the semifinals. He resigned that job at the end of the 2019 season, and has not returned to coaching, yet.

      The “no names on the back of the jersey” is something several teams do in college ball. It’s supposed to be like a “humble” thing or like a “we’re part of a team and individual pride isn’t important”. It is against NCAA rules for players to get paid for playing, even endorsement deals or perks are against the rules and they’re very strict about it. So some teams see it as “egotistical” to have names on the jerseys.

I still believe if we would've been given the chance we could've won the national championship in 2007 and 2009.

  • @stevenvitte
    @stevenvitte Год назад +12

    I'm so glad you reacted to this game! This was one of the main catalysts for the forming of the College Football Playoff. Whether Power 5 or Group of 5, if your team goes undefeated and wins its conference, like what Boise State did in 2006/7, you should in theory be able to be part of the College Football Playoff. The CFP is expanding to 12 teams in 2024, so hopefully we'll get some matchups that can play out similar to how Boise State/Oklahoma unfolded. 😉
    Boise State currently plays in a "Group of 5" Conference called the Mountain West Conference. The G5 and MWC are considered a step below the quality of play that is seen in the "Power 5" Conferences (SEC, B1G, Big XII, ACC, PAC-12).

    • @jameshumphrey2345
      @jameshumphrey2345 Год назад +2

      Yes, thanks for explaining that nuance. Boise State has been in the top division of US college football since 1996 and this division has gone by several names over the years: Division I, Division I-A, and currently Football Bowl Subdivision of Division I (FBS). Further complicating this structure is the politics of the sport: there are five conferences that include most of the sport's traditional powers, thus they're informally tagged the Power Five - it was six not that long ago, but the current Power Five swallowed up some selected universities and one of the power conferences dissolved. There's no performance-based system of promotion or relegation, as there would be in a rational scheme. And Boise has never been invited into a power conference, although rumors abound. It's money, connections and to an extent how big your stadium is.
      BTW, Boise State football was in Division II until 1978, even though all its other sports were in Division I. The NCAA created Division I-AA for football only in 1979, and BSU and its conference successfully petitioned to join that division. BSU was in that division for 17 years, and it won a championship and got third place a couple of times.
      Clear? Of course!

      @@jameshumphrey2345 Correct, and it should be noted that with the 2022 season over, their most recent losing season is still 1997, just their second year at the top level, and it's rare that they've even come terribly close to .500. 2021, where they went 7-5 and had their bowl canceled by COVID protocols, was their only sub-.600 season in that stretch.

    • @MattLindon-wv8jy
      @MattLindon-wv8jy Год назад +1

      This game is included in the catalyst but the main driver didnt happen until 2008..... A few things to note:
      1. This was actually Boise State's 3rd of 5 undefeated seasons in the 2000s, where they earlier went undefeated in 2002, and 2004 and would later go undefeated in 2008 and 2009.
      2. This game is considered to be David vs Goliath, but really that was more of a media trope than anything. Boise State had a better record, was ranked higher, had a better MOV on the season and a better offense statistically. This also wasnt the highest ranked bowl game they played in as in 2004 they played #5 Louisville in the Poinsett Bowl.
      3. The main driver would occur later, because in 2008 Utah and Boise State would go undefeated yet neither team would make the championship game in favor of two brand name P5 teams with one loss each. Following 2008, the MWC actually submitted an 8 team playoff to the BCS and NCAA, but this was rejected by all AQ conferences. In response, the G5 took nuclear action against the league.......
      First the University of Utah sued the NCAA and BCS for violating NCAA contracts and their alumni which included a sitting US Senator opened a senatorial investigation into the NCAA and BCS for fraud, corruption and anti-trust.
      Then the 2009 season happened. Again this season both the WAC and MWC champions went undefeated again, but neither made the national championship despite significant controversy. Additional controversy was added when the two teams were forced to play each other despite literally playing each other in bowl season in 2008 and per selection criteria for the BCS bowl this should not have occured. During this season 7 G5 universities joined U of U's lawsuit, and the BCS got investigated by the FBI.
      Then the 2010 season happened. For the 3rd consecutive year the MWC champion went undefeated, yet didnt make a championship game. 2010 featured the two strongest G5 teams in sports history with both the MWC and WAC Champions posting Top 4 offenses, Top 2 defenses, and Top 2 margins of victory both at 31+ per game. Both teams also beat at least 4 Top 25 teams and beat the B10 and ACC Champions. MWC TCU in fact became the first team in NCAA history to go undefeated and miss a national championship by getting jumped by two lower ranked teams. WAC Boise State magically missed a BCS bowl entirely despite outranking 5 teams that did including teams they literally beat during the season and an unranked 8-5 Uconn. Boise State averaged a higher margin of victory than Uconn scored points per game, but yet it didnt matter.
      By this point things were so undeniably corrupt that major legal action was taken against the NCAA and BCS. A. 11 universities joined in a $240 million class action lawsuit against the NCAA and BCS for corruption, fraud and contract violations, B. 3 State Governments sued the NCAA and BCS for fraud, and anti-trust, C. The US Senate opened a trial hearing against the NCAA and BCS for violating 24 counts of federal anti-trust, 8 counts of fraud and 4 counts of corruption.
      Then the 2011 season happened. Amazingly for the second straight year Boise State finished in the Top 10 and tied for the best record in the league only to miss the BCS bowls despite outranking 5 other teams. In fact of the 5 G5 teams to finish in the top 25 ZERO made a BCS bowl, which should not have happened. This included a 12-1 Boise State, 13-1 Houston and 11-2 TCU all miraculously outranked by an 8-4 #23 West Virginia.

    Boise State weren't division II; they weren't even 1-AA. however, there are 5 conferences (the "power five": Big 10, Big 12, ACC, SEC, and Pac-12) that have historically dominated division 1 football, and schedule games against teams from the other conferences mostly just to get easy wins. Boise State was in the Mountain West conference, which is not one of the power five. They missed out on the national championship game despite the fact they were undefeated in the regular season, simply because their schedule was deemed to not be difficult enough. So this was a huge win.

    Also, as a defensive player in soccer (futbol :), I was frequently given the job of covering or mixing it up with the elite offensive player from the other team. I feel your pain of seeing a 6'5 striker coming right at you with serious speed. Yikes.

    To answer your question Boise State is a Division 1 team, although they've only been in D1 football for about 8 year at the point of this game. What really separates them from a team like Oklahoma, aside from Oklahoma spending like 20x what Boise State does on their football budget, is that back in this BCS era of college football you had teams that would automatically qualify (AQ) to play in the best bowl games if they won their conference, and Boise State was from a conference that was not an AQ conference. It was in a lower tier conference, and still is, so that meant they could win every game they played and not make it to the national championship, like what happened here, or they could win every game and not even make it to one of the major BCS bowls, like what happened to them and TCU in 2008.
    Things have changed a lot since then in some ways and not a lot in other ways. We're soon going to have expanded playoffs for college football so who knows what the future will look like for underdog teams like Boise State.

    The reason this game was so significant is because it was a pretty big shift in the balance of power (or at least in public’s perception of power) between the power 5 conferences and the group of 5 conferences. Those labels are informal, but the belief back in the day was that the power 5 were far superior to the group of 5, and a top-tier power 5 program (like Oklahoma) was undoubtedly far better than an top-tier group of 5 program (like Boise St). That’s not to say that upsets never happened before 2007 but this game was truly a David v Goliath not because Boise wasn’t expected to win (they were only 7 point underdogs iirc) but because in the grand scheme of college football, a small program in a group of 5 conference wasn’t even supposed to get a shot in a major bowl game against an elite program like Oklahoma.
    Before this time, it was really difficult for mid-major programs to earn enough respect from the national media in order to be taken seriously. This win by Boise really opened the door for other mid-major football programs to get their shots too. TCU was also another mid-major program that had to earn their respect too. Nowadays, seeing mid-major programs punching above their weight and beating bigger programs isn’t as much of a surprise, but 20 years ago it was a much bigger deal because hardly anyone gave them the respect they deserved until schools like Boise St and TCU came along and proved their worth in the modern era.

    There are 834 colleges and universities in the US that play football divided into 5 Divisions. There are 130 teams that play in the highest division (Football Bowl Subdivision) divided into 10 conferences and 4 Independent teams (most famous of which is Notre Dame).
    5 of these conferences are known as "Power Conferences" and consist of the largest and usually the best teams. The other 5 are known as the "Group of 5" and are somewhat smaller and less competative. Anytime a school from the group of 5 makes it this far it is a big deal and they kind of become America's underdog and everyone roots for them.
    For the past 15-20 years Boise State has consistently been on of the best "Group of 5" programs and has consistently beaten top schools from Power 5 Conferences. The most recent group of 5 Cinderella story was last year when Cincinatti become the first G5 team to make the college football playoff.

    Boise State is in Division 1 but isn't in one of the Power 5 Conferences (ACC, SEC, Big 10, Big 13 and PAC 12) plus a few independents like Notre Dame, which are considered the big-time programs. There are 5 other conferences described as Mid-Majors, considered to be inferior to the Power 5. Boise State is in one of them. Since the bulk of their games are within their own conference their victories don't gain them the same respect as wins over Power 5 teams would. That is why the undefeated Boise State being was still considered inferior to a twice defeated Oklahoma from the Big 12. This Fiesta Bowl was proof that they could play with the big boys.

    Boise State is a "Mid-Major" school meaning its smaller thus typically plays other smaller schools, not the "big boys" like Oklahoma, Alabama, etc...who play better teams regularly. So these teams, even if they go undefeated often don't get considered for the big bowls or national championship spots (these are voted on, not playoffs prior to the last couple years).
    There is now a 4 team playoff (still voted on) hopefully expanding to 12 in the next year or two.

    A little more context to this game, Before 1998 there were two ways to be National Champion in Division 1-A, the AP poll voted on by sports reporters, and the Coaches Poll voted on by coaches. It was very biased. But every now and then there would be split decisions and you would get an upstart team, like BYU in 1984 who were the only undefeated team and were voted the National Champions. The NCAA didnt want smaller schools to be in the big bowl games that paid the most money so they created a system using computers to pick the teams but they had to be a part of the major conferences, Big 10, PAC 10, SEC, ACC, BIG EAST, BIG 12 any other teams were left out
    But problems arose, teams like Boise State, TCU, and Utah kept winning and having better records than the top BCS teams but they weren't allowed in. The big conferences claimed that the conferences those smaller teams were in were filled with weak teams, hence why their records were so good. Those schools said "Give us a chance to prove it"
    Eventually, due to fan demand the BCS expanded to let those other schools in if they finished the season ranked in the top 6 in the BCS and wouldnt you know, Utah went and did it.
    When this game was played Boise State was undefeated, and Oklahoma was considered the weakest BCS team so they put them against Boise State. Oklahoma was 10-2. Oklahoma was favored to win by 7 1/2 points but most thought it would be a blowout and the NCAA could say "see, you small schools cant compete with us big schools" but Boise State turned around and won.
    Later, it was claimed "They weren't good enough to do it without a trick play" or "They played the weakest BCS team and only won by 1 point"
    If it wasn't for this game, and later big games by smaller schools, we wouldn't have the playoffs we have now
    The payouts for this game was huge for Boise. Oklahoma's share was smaller than the entire football budget, but Boise State's was higher than the entire athletic budget for their school and both teams were paid over 20 million dollars

  • @chn71
    @chn71 Год назад

    Hopefully this isn't too confusing, but here is how NCAA football is set up. The FBS (Football Bowl Subdivision, formerly called Division 1) has 10 conferences, but there are a set of conferences called the "Power Five" (SEC, ACC, Big 10, Pac 12, Big 12), which is where the top college teams play. The other five are made up of smaller schools, and there are usually 2-3 teams that break into the lower half of the top 25 rankings, but for a team from these conferences to have a chance at a big bowl game or a spot in the playoff, they almost need to go undefeated since their conference schedule is much weaker than teams from the "Power Five". Currently there is a four-team playoff for FBS, but it's set to expand to 12 in a few years. Below the FBS is the FCS (Football Championship Subdivision, formerly known as Division 1-AA). This level has 16 conferences, and they have a 24-team playoff at the end of the season. Further down you have Division II, Division III and NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics)
