Favorite Fly for Sea Trout - Catch & Tie

  • In this video I will show you one of my favorite flies for sea trout/sea run brown trout. It is my most important fly because not only is it effective but it is so different from every other fly in my fly box. It is very dense and unnatural and I believe many times the fish react to your flies more of curiosity than of hunger and to have something that gets their attention can work very well. And for being just a big blob, it got more movement than you think. As I show in the underwater clips. I also think it moves better used as a dropper fly. That is perfect because for most flies it catches more fish if it is at the end of your leader.
    This is the fifth Catch & Tie video that is a series of videos on my channel that will both have a fishing part and a part where I tie the fly I used in the clip. I'm fishing with my friend Daniel here and what a nice day it was with plenty of action.

    Those sea and weather conditions are mirror image of what we get here on the East coast of Vancouver Island, BC, Canada at this time of year. Our sea-run Cutthroat trout are getting ready for the salmon fry smorgasbord which will be coming downstream to them soon. Fishing the fry-fly between the waves with a fast retrieve usually gets them interested as do foam head surface attractors. So much in common... thanks.

    Great vid Robert and I look forward to fishing with you and Tapani again. I want to ask you if its possible to get a few shots of you casting? The reason being is that I remember being mesmerised by your art of casting and how graceful you are with the fly. I have told everyone that fishes with me that just watching you cast is a work of art. Thanks so much. And keep up the great vids.

      In sub 4 degrees water it tend to be slow retrieve that works. Here it was just above that and then I try different speeds. When it instantly gave result with a faster retrieve I kept doing that.

    Another great video thanks Robert. How do your catch rates with this fly compare to the pattegrisen? I’m always put off by the price of spey capes and end up buying the flies. But this might be a cheaper way to a very effective shrimp pattern.

    Robert, I love your videos, I’ve been over the last two decades an avid estuary sea trout fisherman. I must admit I use herring and make real strip in the method of spinning. Your videos have inspired me to try the fly method and I’ve known locally it’s getting more and more popular.
    As an avid salmon angler by initially trolling on loch Tay from January 15th unilateral may and then retreating to Loch Lomond to continue much of the same methods with the fly thrown in here and there. Then and also fishing the fly on many rivers until the seasons end.
    I was wondering if you have ever fished the lochs for salmon by the fly or any other method, if not it could be a future tutorial and an adventure for you.
    We are in a period where the materials for fly fishing are changing rapidly and depending on the place , materials change almost monthly.
    Any thoughts or advice would be perfect.

      Much work has been done to improve the creek habitat for the sea trout in this area. Along one small creek they’ve made a path with spawning pools marked for fish-spotting during spring. The aim has been to display the importance of even very small streams. Highly commendable!

    • @FlyFishingbyRobert

    • @tommytexxas1980
      @tommytexxas1980 3 года назад

      What you mean with too high, and a 4 wt is perfect when its little to no wind and Long leaders and gammarus😄😄 I use a 2 wt 10 ft nymphing rod for my gammarus fishing in no wind and small fish area🤔 works perfectly fine but offcourse 7 wt in high wind😛

    • @FlyFishingbyRobert
      @FlyFishingbyRobert  3 года назад +1

      Im sorry. Too high. I ment too weak. At least for the way I fish with two flies looking like earplugs, sometimes in strong wind and for having the appropriate gear for the potential to catch fish to upwards a meter. But I see here in the reply that you know fishing and understand what you can do with the gear you already have and thats great!

    • @lethuliv5500
      @lethuliv5500 3 года назад +1

      I'd say "where" is an important question as well. Sea trouth in saltier water does not tend to be as big as the one Robert is fishing for. In Swedish west coast most anglers use class 5-6 and some even use class 4 during the still days. I fish in both spots and use a class 6 on both and it works for me. I would not go for a class 4 on Gotland both to the environment and the fish.
