Butch Patrick, the Eddie Munster actor, owns a different replica of the Munster Koach and a replica of Dragula. I met him at a Nostalgia car show at Gateway racetrack near St. Louis a couple of years ago.
I met him up at Iola WI car show a few years back. A hell of a nice guy! He had both there also.

This channel should have way more subs than it does considering the number of us petrolheads out there, it's awesome. George Barris and his highly skilled team certainly built some epic creations but no way would I want to be in the Munster Koach at 150 mph 🤣
Absolutely not, you couldn't pay me enough money to go 150 MPH in that thing even if I was just a passenger and Mario Andretti was driving it, that thing was definitely engineered for a TV show and not for going 150 MPH, even George Barris couldn't change the laws of physics.

The 150mph is as fake a number as the cubic inch number on the engine.
It is a cool custom car. But it isn't powerful, and it isn't fast.

Fact # 11: Yes, George Barris did build the Munster Koach and Dragula. But the actual design for the cars were drawn out for him by none other than Tom Daniel of Monogram models and Mattel Hot Wheels fame. Tom designed such model cars as the Red Baron, Ice T, Rommel's Rod, Badman '55 Chevy, Paddy Wagon, Bad News, Sand Crab, and a host of other extremely popular Show Rod model cars. Good video!

Kool Barris Kustom! Ixnay on the 289 being bored and stroked to 425 cubes - just a tall tale from the master story teller George Barris, he enjoyed spreading stories that he could do the impossible. Probably in the low 300hp range, a 1964 289 has pretty small ports and valves. Still cool, probably a sketchy ride.
Yeah, we've been chatting about that for some time on here and I wouldn't think that would be possible either. Now if it were like a 351 or something around that size; then it would be, but of course those weren't around quite yet in '64 😉

As a 12 year old in 1969 and on, I would ride my bike on the sidewalk where the storefront showroom was only inches away behind glass. I thought is was always cool because he always had at least a couple of his famous cars there. Riding my bike around I could never imagine how so many years later the Batmobile Mobile sold for millions, , and the Munster cars popularity

And let's not forget George Barris is taking a lot of credit for things that others have done. His brother actually ran the body shop we're all these vehicles were built. When my dad got out of the service way back when he worked one summer at the shop Lovering hoods and frenching headlights.... The only way any of those vehicles could run 150 miles an hour as if they were thrown off a cliff!

I've always doubted that the engine was really anywhere close to 425". Barris was known to bore and stroke the truth. The small block Ford engines available at the time could not be taken out that far - by a long shot. I even started a thread about it over on the HAMB once and most agreed that it wasn't possible at the time.
It does seem like an awfully large CI jump from just boring and stroking I agree; but I doubt Barris's group would have lied about it. Wouldn't make much since for them to considering they have created much more extreme machines in the past than that. Maybe they made some radical mod to the block to achieve it or something? 🤔 Not sure on that man, I just had to take George's word on that from his site that his family still keeps running, since he is no longer with us.
George later on was known to sell so called TV and Movie cars he had nothing to do with and sold as originals
A 289 was a very very light weight engine and could never ever make it to anything close to 425 ci and I worked in an engine machine shop for years
Remember the 351 Windsor had to have a taller deck block just to stroke it to make a 351 from a 302 which was a larger version of the 289 which started life as 221 then a 260 etc

@@jimhaines8370 yes a 351W can go all the way out to over 7 liters. But they weren't available until 1969 - about 5 years after the Koach was built
@@failranch9542 yes that is what I was saying as in there was no way to make a 425 out of the short deck already modified 221 to 260 to a 289 platform engine ended life as a 302 and make it another 136 ci larger than a 289 ever and yes 351 w engines came out in 1969 and the show was already gone by then on top of that a 302 didn’t come out until 1968 which was a stroked 289 also
Barris sold circus cars mostly and the hard parts were not show car strong points ever no matter who made them

It's kinda funny having such an eye catching car yet the show was filmed in black and white. 500 man hours is no small feat or build. I love the looks of the front end and how they made the headlights. It's great having a direct air intake like they do on the engine, but without any air filter you'll be lucky to get 500 miles before the oil needs changing.
True indeed, they did run an unaired Pilot episode in color and with different actors, which I didn't actually see until just recently, but the car wasn't in it yet and honestly it just felt really weird seeing it the show in color. Mainly because their make up seemed looked so extremely different colored than the rest of the people in the show, lol.

When the show made its debut, I was still a seed. 😁 But as time went on, I enjoyed watching the reruns. On a side note, I went to Amazon to look for that clown truck you did a couple of episodes ago, sold out. I'm on the notification list when it comes back. As always, your insights are appreciated.
Yeah, the show debuted before my time too, but I still love it. It's just one of those shows that are so timeless everyone pretty much enjoys it regardless of age.
BTW, if you are talking about the "goblin truck" in Maximum Overdrive, I never did a clown truck, lol; yeah they ran out of stock there about 10 minutes after I posted that video. There are alternate links in that video's description now though. Places are running out fast though as that was a very highly anticipated release for sure 😉
While working for a major airline back in the 60s,we saw the Munsters Gorgeous Hot Rod sitting on the ramp ready to be loaded as cargo on a jet.We never thought we would see this Gorgeous Hot Rod in person.I will never forget this.

This was a great 👍 history lesson on the car. Of course the character grandpa had his own coffin mobile. Although it's been years since I've watched my DVD collection of the show, I've seen every episode countless times since I was a kid. I'm a great fan of the show. I'm a great fan of the cars. I loved watching this as a kid in the 80s but I never liked the car. But being the son of a car guy...I understood the coolness of the car and could see why it would have been a hot item back then. Great video. 👍🏽

I loved the Munsters too as a kids and I particularly loved this car and the Dragula. I saw the Munster Mobile at the Detroit Auto show as it was called when I was a kid. What really struck me about it was, inside there is a "laboratory" for Grampa complete with bottles all filled with various potions. The size of this famous TV car us what amazed me, including the engine.

The #1 car as sad as it looks is in Orlando Fl at the Dezerland Auto Experience, it is in the Cars of the Stars section along with many other cool vehicles, The Miami museum closed many years ago and moved to the current location

As a kid who loved this show, I somehow got a model kit and proceeded to build a glue covered bad build. I have no idea what happened to it eventually.

No one had ever taught me the right way to build models. My father was a farmer, so not interested and knew nothing. My older brother was probably away at college. So it was a mess, some parts not put on right. As much as I loved the show and the two cars, including the casket car that was supposed to be Grandpa Munster's. I wasn't all that proud of my effort with the model. No wonder it disappeared into the annuals of family and farm history.

At 1:20: a Ford Corbra 289 that was bored and stroked out to a 425???? Not even possible in today's day and age, let alone in the 60's. Stroking a 351 to over 400 cid is hard to do, no way you are doing that to a 289/302 block, it's physically impossible.

The back two carburetors don't contribute, and are there for show only. Surprised to not read that here. Also, the Rob Zombie song 'Dragula' actually was shot in a Munster Koach replica... I guess he liked the Dragula name better.
Yeah, we were talking about that earlier; most likely all carbs weren't functioning as that would be a handful for the studio to keep running well.
150 MPH would be fittingly nightmarish. I imagine it handles like a shopping cart.

AMT Models made The Munster Coach and the Dragula model kits, both recently re-issued and easy to find.

I always wondered about that induction system. I finally saw it at :49 if you blow the screen up you can see the low regular round air cleaner in the middle.
Well, they were modified to used an air filter like that later down the road, but at least at the time it was used in the film, the original car just used screens inside the air horns instead of air filters as you can see at the 3:00 mark 😉

It's a movie from 1971. There's a 1959 Cadillac hearse, and a Jaguar hearse. I'm pretty sure the original Jag was destroyed for the movie, but I'm also pretty sure there have been a couple of replicas made. The movie is a little strange, but the cars are awesome.

Something you kept on forgetting about it has 10 intake runners and only eight cylinders ,exhaust pipes .
Two of the intake runners don't do anything .
Those are 2 barrel carbs so, 20 barrels feeding 8 cylinders = nonsense. My guess is one or 2 carburetors are functional, the rest are dummies. That would be the only way to make it start and drive normally.
Yep most likely didn't use all the carbs, but I didn't see much info on that in my research, so not sure.
I remember seeing George Barris, talking an interview about the 10 intakes in the eight cylinders... he said it's what looked good and it does look good....

Interesting as always, but I also gotta call out the claim that the 289 was enlarged to 425 cubes. I read a lot of mags back in the 80s and 90s they covered Ford muscle from the 60s and on up. I recall articles, on the Munster Mobile and Dragula. One of them purportedly had a 427. Don’t remember if one of the main cars was also equipped with a 427 for any drag strip action, or fabricated or confused with the the Dragula. The Munster Mobile was as aerodynamic as a square sail against the wind and probably would have seen the roof, windshield, fenders, etc blowing off before it hit 150mph, unless the front fenders helped it take off halfway down the strip. Carroll Shelby and other Shelby American legends had reported that the 289 was good for 380 horsepower for road racing and anything more was pushing it based on the parts and engineering of the time. So a 289 in something like that could be geared for a quick launch in front of a camera, or use a bigger motor or use special affects of the time. More is documented about racing efforts in the 60s than there was for factory prototypes and movie cars. Anyway, I used to watch the Munsters on B&W TV so I couldn’t ever tell what was what color…
Yeah, the Barris engine cubes claim has been discussed in the comments already, I think they must have misconstrued some info over the years as well; but we'll never know for certain unless the engine is allowed to be restored one day so real measurements could be taken is pretty much what it boils down to. 😉

The original car probably didn't run any when it was on the show anyways. Looks like the airhorns had screens in them though, so that at least would have kept out most debris and such. Remember, back in the old days; like the days of the original Model T cars, air filters weren't a thing quite yet 😉

Much like the Batmobile, the original car would've done public appearances back in the day which is why the cars got a lot of details that were never showcased on the tv show. Due to the success of the Munster's Car, Ed Roth designed and built an Addams Family car [Druid Princess] which was never used due to that show's cancellation.

Years ago, when George Barris was still alive, I got to sit in the Munster Koach that was in his shop. The third door had wicker on it.
Maybe they ran out of paint.

@@oz1141 I just read about that ,it was something that was done on the horse drawn coaches .then for the replicas they just painted them yellow because it looked similar in black and white photos.

I've always wanted to see that car do a hole shot and it's probably got a 2 piece drive shaft in it. It would probably most likely brake something if anyone tried it lol..I had a 1976 Cadi and I don't think it was as long as the Munster Coach..I remember my ol Cadi was just an inch longer than a Ford F250 king cab truck that had 4doors or maybe just a backseat with 3 doors. All I remember is the truck was a long bed and built in the 80s.. I pulled up beside it just to see if my car was as long or longer than the truck cause that was the last year of the big Cadillacs..I seen a couple Replicas of the Munster Coach and they looked nothing like George Barris' design...George Barris had a wild imagination and good at what he done..I just noticed 1 of the replicas he made and ya gotta look really close cause the radiator is chrome instead of brass... I don't think he went all out with the replicas
