    This week was busy y'all. In the week leading up to my wedding, I had an actual wedding dress to make, a Patreon to launch, a video (this one) to film and edit, another video to plan (next week's & it's going to be an epic collaboration with ‪@NotYourMommasHistory‬), a third video to release on my Patreon (it's almost done!), and I needed to clean my sewing studio because it was (and still is) a disaster. So, in honor of the chaos that was Mercury entering retrograde and Venus finally stationing direct, this week's video is about answering your questions for me - whether they're about me, how I run my youtube channel, the doggos, historical costuming and dress history advice, and also a bit about cosplaying Howl's Moving Castle!

      I constantly misplace my needles when I'm sewing on the couch.
      Once I was just lounging, watching netflix and I feel a s h a r p stab. I immediately knew it was one of my needles but for the sake of my life I could not find it. I tried just a visual search, quite bravely pressing heavily down on the softness, calculating approximate location by where I was sitting and where the stab wound was, but nothing
      Until I remembered that I have a metal detector.
      I pulled her out(the smaller stick you use for precise location, not the actual vacuum :D ) and immediately found the culprit, ever so slightly diagonal but otherwise horisontal, just at the perfect angle to shank me
      A really foolproof method, if you can get your hands on one :)

    Recommendation: get the “hairpin pal” to help you with the pins on the floor situation. I am a dancer and I use it both for my Bobby pins and also if I need safety pins to be pinned into a costume. Since it’s magnetic, you can just wave it over your floor and it will pick up the pins for you! :)

    Pins on floor....yeppers & when we were cleaning out my parents house after Dad died (it’s ok, he was healthy until 2wks before & 92yo) I took his desk mat. I used it so my sewing chair will roll but also it makes picking up stray pins easier. Some still end up on the carpet which I think I will remove. Carpet & sewing don’t mix. Nice on the feet, until you or the dog or grandkids step on a pin.
    Love your room! So organized! I took over a kid’s room after he left (abandoned us) but never really did a proper job setting it up for sewing & crafting. I also apparently hoard fabric. 4 large bins. And found more in our basement storage space.

    Abby, I am venturing into costuming. I have my favorite time periods. 1890, 1950's, 1970. There are others. I was a teenager in the 70's. I won't be able to afford historical fabric's but my garments will be historically stitched. I am an experienced seemstress. I took all the sewing classes offered in middle and high school. I have no books of any kind on historical clothing. I will be setting up my sewing room in the next few weeks. I have a large family room to use. I watched Bernadette Banner set up her studio. I am looking forward to getting started. I have a petticoat that was given to me years ago. It has removable steel bands. The total width is 120". I cannot wait to wear it again. I also like the dress during the civil war. Congratulations on your wedding.

    Legos, needles, glass -- bare feet are the best way to find these things. Science.
    So, you and I have a very similar background as to how we got into historical dress! Everyone else I know who sews has been doing it since practically the womb and I'm over here like, "ayyy how y'all doing". It warms my heart to know there's someone out there who had a non-traditional/theatre kid route to this, too!

    Too fun! I love watching & listening to you... the history, fabrics and fashion satisfies my interests, shutting off the sound and just “enjoying the show” of “YOU” is ( no exaggeration ) just like watching my own personality daughter, Joy. You truly could be her dark haired twin! Quirky humor and all!! ❤️❤️
    Happy Wedding!

    Howl's Moving Castle - EXCELLENT!!! Love that movie. And who doesn't swoon when girl meets boy for the first time?!?!?! He's gorgeous as a blonde, and that voice. I mean, as a grandmother I do realize this is animation. But a good movie for young girls that proves love comes from within and not how you look. And Belated Congratulations.

    We used to have magnetic pin "cushions" that were sort of oval shaped plastic box with the magnet inside. It was very easy to sweep it across the table and gather all needles with it.

    My Dad gave me a tool from his toolbox years ago that is a telescoping magnet. It is used for picking up dropped screws when doing mechanical work but works like a dream for picking up lost sewing pins. You don't even need to see the pin, just wave the magnetic tip over the carpet or floor.

  • @michellecornum5856
    @michellecornum5856 4 года назад +1

    Congratulations! Also, I, too, have a carpet and, interestingly pins. I bought one of those big magnets on a stick (it looks like a metal push-broom with no bristles) from the car part store. I glide that sucker across the floor, under tables and shelves -- all the pins (and needles) are picked up.
