  • Looking for an easy vintage dress to sew in just a few hours? Well, I put myself to the test using the Decades of Style TLC Caftan to see if it was possible to make this "easy" sewing pattern in a day!

It's also the 2 year anniversary since Decades of Style released this pattern 🎉! I love how comfortable, relaxed, and elegant this caftan is, and it definitely has helped me feel more human during these past few weeks. It is an incredibly easy vintage sewing pattern, as you don't know how to sew zippers or buttons, etc. It is definitely an excellent dress pattern for beginners and a perfect dressmaking project for the summer. The only fiddly bits I whine about (and I always whine about these bits - it has nothing to do with the sewing pattern!) are putting on the neck facing and the armholes. Decades of Style does a great job writing their instructions to make this an easy sewing project for beginners. So, if you're looking for an easy vintage style dress that you can make in a day, you want to sew a cute beach cover-up, or are looking for a cute caftan to add to your slow fashion wardrobe - I highly recommend the Decades of Style TLC Caftan! (I am not being paid to say this - I genuinely love this dress pattern and the sewing pattern company.)

When I did medieval reenactment I was taught to snip the selvedge and tear the fabric, rather than pulling a thread and cutting. Doesn't work for all woven fabrics, but there's something satisfying about ripping.

Sidenote: you're right! Pulling a thread to cut modern linen is so tedious. I did so here recently to cut 2 shifts & a petticoat. You are SO (sew?!) inspiring! I sewed my first (and only) caftan as a beginner in 1972 and felt really daring because I made it from 100% cotton instead of one of the polyesters so popular back then and because I followed a "pattern" in a newsletter that listed sizes of rectangles to cut out instead of actual pattern pieces. I have no idea whether it turned out as great as I thought it did but I was so proud of myself!

I was given a tip over 30 years ago for working with linen. Medical Paper Tape. You know that strange paper-like tape that comes in the little dispenser with the plastic 'tooth' that cuts? Lay our linen out with a T-square and then run the paper tape down the cutting line. Then cut through the paper tape. No dancing linen. I've also had luck using freezer paper, if you have a lot of little pieces to cut out, lightly iron the freezer paper to the back of the linen and you've got stabilized linen that you can 'peel' the freezer paper off.

I just started following your channel and I LOOOOOVE IIIIIIIIIT! I also haven’t made much of a dent in your videos, so there’s a chance you’ve already made what I’m about to suggest: an empire gown! Any fabric, any color. I adore empire gowns!
On a more serious note, thank you for sharing your expertise, your insights, your humor, and even your mistakes with us! You present yourself as a competent, confident woman who abides no shit, and those are my favorite kind of people. You inspire me to remain true to myself and pursue my passions. I hope you never stop making! Thank you for your contribution to this world.

One trick for pulling threads, especially on linen and cotton, is to run a bar of undyed soap over the area first. Lubricate those threads!

I'm not a seamstress or anything nearly related to it, so that would make me a muggle I guess. 😅 BUT you are a Pro so it technically IS professionally done so 🤷🏽‍♀️ I think it looks fabulous! 💕

I made a kimono-style top, a while back and I used to use the sleeves as pockets all the time. That’s actually historically accurate.
