One time my cousin was braiding my hair in 3 box braids (I'm white passing.) and it hurt so much cause she was pulling and she had to pull out a hot comb and it burned my ear like 4 times, but it's okay cause my mom does it much more when she does my hair sometimes.
I have straight hair and then on my tips, I have natural curls. People always ask me if I curl my hair or it is natural and it is I love it and natural hair is my fav hair type. #BLACKGIRLMAGIC
unicron THE LAST We still do. We can't get jobs because we're told that the way our hair naturally grows out of our head is unprofessional. We still have to fight for natural hair because those in a position of power don't like it and wants us to assimilate by straightening our hair.

Kory Kent I don't recall saying we had it worse. Maybe we shouldn't be playing the "which minority is more oppressed" game. That's so true tho I'm white and I have curly hair and I remember even in the late 00's I would straight my hair every day. Gladly I love my hair now 👌👌
I'm an African woman from Nigeria and I have to say that I truly have respect for you black women living in the US. You guys are really strong and I respect you ❤️
Im probably gonna get some hate for this but that woman's hair at the beginning is like the "perfect natural hair standard " you know how the standard of beauty is fair skin light eyes ect? Well that kind of hair is like the standard in the black hair community. I feel like girls dont wanna admit it to themselves but 4c hair is rarely represented its always the 3c 4a 4b hair types. Many girls I know go natural in hopes of looking like "that" but end up realizing that their 4c hair is nothing like what they see on those natural hair pages (and also extremely difficult to manage) and end up feeling disappointed . I am very grateful of course for the progress (black ppl embracing their hair and skin ) but im just stating this as an observation **and yes I know there was 4c hair shown in the video I am talking in a general sense based on what I've observed **
Exactly they could have put more girls with kinky 4 type hair. That would be more accurate. I hate how whenever black girls are in media, many times it is an unrealistic portrayal. As if how we really look isn't good enough. They had like one girl who was the average hair texture
Bianca Amethyst I don't understand why anyone would be upset about this comment because this is 100% true this girl was telling me how 3 type hair is considered "good hair" but I'm a type 4c and she is also and I yes I felt offended because all hair can be good hair as long as it's Taken Care of !
I think you missed my point. We were talking about how aesthetically pleasing this video is and I suggested watching another one of Buzzfeed's videos which, in my opinion, is edited and filmed even more beautifully so I thought that the person who wrote the original comment would like that video too because it has a similar feel.
Same it makes me soo sad that their people went through so much oppression. WHen you see how it gets to even the most tiny things...... Yikes! It becomes real folks... It feels real and to me almost like it is happening now.. :'(
I love being a black woman . My natural hair is so versatile . I can do so many different styles with it . I love my skin complexion and my facial features . I wouldn't want to be anything else . I love my culture and I love black men . #blackgirlmajic
I am white and I never knew a lot of this stuff! I love these kind of videos because it teaches me about the hardships of others and what they've been through. It makes me feel awful for the struggle black people have gone through to conform to Eurocentric beauty standards just be accepted back then by white people, and the evolution of black self-love throughout the decades leading up to the present day.
Who else finds the "Not just black people...." comments annoying like do y'all understand that in order to have that curly hair one of your ancestors had to have been black but thanks for commenting about non-black hair in a video about black hair.
I'm a 100% Indian and my family has history of curly hair.None of my ancestors have been to anywhere outside India. This comment just exists here to say that curly hair is not copyrighted by any race or ethnicity,.Any one can have curly hair naturally ,if it's in their genes. That's it.
@Axliyxh I'm pretty sure that white people dont have type 4 (actually type 4!) hair. And what exactly is racist about this video? If you think retelling history is racist, then I don't know what to tell you...
Nithya Shree You NEVER know that for sure, you never know that. Curly hair comes from Africa. Straight hair comes from the Caucus Mountains. A Black person could have came in contact with your family tree longgggg time ago. People moved everywhere. But, you have not experienced what we have experienced. Yes, I know there are colorism in India too. But, if you are not Black, you cannot experience our trials. Therefore stop trying to push yourself into Black spaces. Enjoy the video for what it is. You would like it if we came up on India videos talking about Black people do that too. Like, please stay out of anything Black if you won’t respect us.
Axliyxh I have heard white people have type 3 hair but type 4 I am pretty sure very few of them have and also what is racist.? Talking about our culture and hair that nowadays anyone can wear? Yeah, what I thought.
Some of y'all are being so rude if this was about cacusian womens hair throughout history, it would be prasied by many people in the comments. All the hate comments can have several seats down. #blackgirlmagic
Kayla Moore while being mixed and having long hair does not correlate I believe its easier for mixed people to grow out their hair since the texture is a bit more relaxed therefore it doesn't have the same amount of shrinkage. This does NOT mean blacks can't have long hair I know plenty who have beautiful long hair, its just easier for mixed to get it to that lenght and it's significantlly easier to care for. I also think the mixed aspect was more relating to her hair texture than her lenght.
mini marley let’s just say that it goes by how you take care of your hair your race or ethnicity has nothing to do with how fast your hair grows because that just doesn’t make any sense
Danisha Davis I'm mad because my mom gave me a perm when I was little and I have a 2 year old sister and her hair is so curly and soft and I'm like we'll dang time to cut off my hair and start over
I'm so jealous of black women's hair!!! I wish I had that type of curly hair!!! My curly hair is so frizzy and all over the place I hate it lol. I'm white and I support #BLACKGIRLMAGIC :) (Let's make this a thing)
Sonia Noodles Trust me its a lot of work I personally would rather have type 3 hair its easier 4c hair is harder to manage and with a family frustrating
Black women have the most beautiful hair I have seen, I understand why they changed their hairstyles through time, but what I don't understand why they still straighten their hair today...You have amazing hair, you shouldn't change something for societies sake, only if it's your personal preference and that counts for everyone. All love :)
Sometimes, women wear weaves and wigs to PROTECT their natural hair and/or to try a new style without having to apply heat or any kind of chemical, such as dye or relaxer, to change it. Then there's women like me who straighten their hair with a flat iron lol. Only sometimes, because we want our curls to come back when we wash it lol. Heat damage can permanently straighten our hair. And unfortunately, sometimes women just don't like their hair they have and prefer straight hair that resembles another ethnicity/race or that certain workplaces and even schools won't allow people to wear afros because they're "distracting" I hope this answers your question. :)
It sure does, but I've noticed that it's not just black women, women of all races that have straight hair tend to want curls and women with curls want straight hair anyway thank you very much for your answer :) I'm not American and in my country we don't have a lot of black people, so I never knew that there were countries forbidding you from have your natural hair in certain environments. That's so sad.
It's insane how heavy the history is associated with black women's hair. Buzzfeed, thank you so much for creating this. The acting within the scenes (like when the slaves had to shave their hair off) was so perfect to communicating the pain associated with this history.
This is African American women's hair through history not black hair through history. Braids and cornrows weren't trends in Africa that started because of a movie....
+Bethsaida Romelus Cause Africans aren't black...right....cause most of these hair styles they are talking about did not originate from Africa right....lmao How stupid can you be?
Because there's a ton of alt-right nazis on youtube. They hunt down every video featuring black people and complain about black people in them. Trust me, this video made a lot of them mad. I've already seen comments telling us to go back to Africa and making snide remarks about our hair and hair textures and I wasn't even looking for their comments, just strolling down the page.
Ok, so I'm white but honestly black people's hair is literally the most gorgeous and awesome thing I've ever seen. Like seriously, I know it's got to be hard to take care of but damn! It looks good! You guys are beautiful, inside and out. Don't let anyone change who you are, and there are millions of other people who feel the same way, from all different races.
I really wanna know who is the one producing these videos, not to be shady but these ones are lowkey better than the regular ones. I love learning about my culture so this is GREAT.
I'm whiter than printer paper, and I KNOW black girls/guys have the best genetics. Beautiful hair, beautiful bodies, beautiful skin, beautiful everything. You guys rock ❤❤
Chanel Davis I don't know if your comment got deleted, but it's racist because she said that blacks have better genetics and immutable features than any other race. That's racist. This isn't complicated.
Black American* hair throughout History. Hairstyles across Sub-Saharan Africa varie alot as you know it's a full contintent filled with alot of diffrent cultures, African Americans aren't the only black people.
but black is an American word to describe black americans. if they were going to talk about other countries I'm sure they would have put the country's namen.
Nyanza Rojas it's like black Americans never travel stay ignorant because America is the only place where blacks were persecuted FYI slavery in the carribean was worst than in america
Kimani I have combination hair and the most coarse area is 4b but it's not as dry as it used to be because I started doing hair masks for dry hair. also sleeping with coconut oil in your hair in braided sections with a bonnet on helps keep in the moisture!
Maybe try a Keratin treatment at the hair dressers. I have super dry tight curls and it loosened them heaps and gave them more moisture. Also try brushing your hair when its wet and put some conditioner through it (before brushing) it makes it heaps easier and spreads the conditioner throughout your hair
It must have taken a long time to film, with all the extravagant costuming, period pieces, eras, actresses and editing. It's well made video, I can understand why it would take a while to put up :)
This is one of my favorite videos on RUclips. Thank you, and I love that the women hug one another in nearly every decade. Black women being there for Black women is beautiful. :)
these are my favourite kinds of buzzfeed videos. like, everyone always shits on buzzfeed, saying they don't make any good videos but i have to disagree. whenever they upload educational - i think that's what this is? correct me if i'm wrong - videos like this, it makes me so happy. it's nice to know that people out there, including me, are learning more and more about black/african american culture and are learning to respect it more (: good job, buzzfeed.
i'm white and i think black/darker women are absolutely gorgeous. I love their culture and fashion and how proud they are of their race. wow i sound weird but you get what i mean.
really good video but I'm a little sad they kinda only focused on black people in America I would really love to learn more about those in Africa like maybe Nigeria or Somalia
Yes actually. Somalia hasnt always been Islamic. They do have a history and a culture just like every other country. I'm more focused on the distant past rather than the present. Also believe it or not girls do have hair under those head coverings and they do have to take care of that hair.
Maggy Blue "Black History Month" So you're saying that there are only blacks in America? You say it wouldn't make sense to include any other black ethnicity even though it's BLACK HISTORY MONTH.
AmyVVoozy What are you saying? I can't comprehend your comment. Of course there are other ethnicities in America. Your point? This month is to celebrate the descendants of slaves. Not Somalians, not anyone else. Black Americans.
thenicestnightmare um, I guess my dead ancestors accept your also dead ancestors apology? There's no reason for you to apologise for something you had no factor in. And there's no reason a lot of black Americans today should be shaming you. Just enjoy, watch, and emphasize for the African American culture with us :)
+thenicestnightmare and +Flowey You have no reason to apologize. Black ppl of today don't blame white ppl for what their ancestors did. We hold you accountable for the ignorance that comes out of your mouths today, for what happened in both the past, and currently. Don't apologize, learn what you can to make things right, starting with your own household, friends, and family. Topics, like this video, don't get covered a lot in daily life when talking about racism, prejudice, and microaggressions, so learn what you can, and put it into your daily life, to try and break down racism
Buzzfeed needs more videos like this more often throughout the year and on more races, ethnicities, religions, genders, etc. I applaud the video. It was beautiful. The connection of the people at the end of each segment was a beautiful touch. But I would love to see more throughout the year. Not just when black history month rolls around.
I'm afro-latina and my mom would always relax my hair growing up, I don't even remember asking for it, she just bought a relaxer whenever it seemed like the previous one was 'wearing out'. I remember being frustrated with my curls because I didn't know what to do with it because I wasn't used to it. I decided to big chop my hair and go natural because the middle section of my hair would always be shorter and more damaged than the rest of my hair growing up. It was also so hard to grow my hair past my shoulders. My hair was also bleached at that point before the chop and after watching videos online, I realized I really should embrace my hair and try to get it to grow and be healthy. I have the thickest hair in my immediate family and my sister always had extremely long hair and very loose curls, sometimes my mom would comment if my hair looked big or puffy, like it's supposed to be straight or something. As black women, we really need to embrace our hair, and I hope society embraces it too, because it's natural and gorgeous.
I understand being proud of your history, I think it's amazing! But saying things like "black girls do it better" or "black women have prettier hair" or "black hair is better than white hair" is just as bad as saying "white girls do it better" or "white hair is better than black hair" If you want to end racism, it has to be ended both ways, Don't be a hypocrite Don't make everything about race Don't act like all people of the opposite race are out to get you
Lec24 Lec24 I totally get what you're saying and this isn't coming from a place of hate but I totally agreed until the very last part. You're absolutely right women do need to support each other mutually, especially women of colour who don't have it easy in our society but as a black woman the always making everything about race part made me shrivel a little. The thing is whether we like it or not, people are prejudiced and apply & imply stereotypes all the time and you may not experience it but it's a daily thing for me (not trying to play the victim) but it's true we don't have the same struggles and same barriers. Why? Because of the colour of my skin (which I wouldn't change for the world) but race will always be a giant factor in my life that's not to be played off or ignored. And obviously other races aren't "out to get me" but it's not as if it's an uncommon thing at all for more pale people to be racist towards people with darker skin tones, whether it was their intention or not. Anyways I'm just trying to be insightful so you understand my perspective but yes you are right that hate should not be tolerated. Also I didn't mean to come off strong these just aren't things that should be downplayed
Fantastic 101, you are very well spoken, thank you for responding to me! I'm sorry if I was out of line with my last comment. I was not directing my comment exclusively towards people of color, I think all races have a tendency to feel targeted by other races. For instance, people saying "white lives matter" or "all lives matter" because they felt excluded from the Black Lives Matter movement.
"black girls do it better" is about cultural appropriation. We do black culture better than anyone else because we are black. So there's absolutely nothing offensive about that.
it is possible that different people at different time had dreads, so it's hard to find the origin. it's likely that african tribes started it before everyone else, but there is no evidence (i think there are ancient small statues from africa that depict women with some sort of dreaded hairstyle). they could have originated way before homo sapiens, after all, other homo species had hair similar to ours. if it's not combed, it starts to dread, even fine european hair which just takes longer.
Most of it comes from Julius Caesar who wrote that they had "hair like snakes". So then later artwork depicted the hair like that just based on his written description. (the Vikings and Celts themselves didn't have their own writing, so it's all relying on the writings of another culture that invaded them) But it was not specific enough to be sure that they were dreads. It could also have been braids with stuff coating them. Here is a pretty good article: heathensofvinland.wordpress.com/2013/06/12/hair-like-snakes-my-hypothesis/
Am I the only person who never sees all the negative comments that everyone is talking about?? I'm out here SEARCHING for these triggered white people 😂
kitty cat I don't assume all white people are racist. Sighhhhhhh. Let me break it down. I have seen a lot of comments about how all these white people are triggered. I, myself, have not seen a single triggered white person. Hence, I am SEARCHING to see what everyone is talking about... Make sense now?
+susan opondo ' I have seen a lot of comments about how all these white people are triggered' - it's people trying to stir up trouble because they have nothing better to do
That is such a shame that we felt that our hair was not attractive or not beautiful enough to the point where we had to straighten our hair to feel like we were beautiful. Our natural hair is beautiful ! And also we are still wearing weave and all this different types of hair cause people still think there hair isn’t beautiful. But it is we have the most strongest thickest hair and we should be proud of that not embarrassed!
I know it's been a while since you commented, but I just wanted to note that it goes beyond beauty. To this day, black people still face discrimination at work or school for their hair. Weaves, relaxers, etc. have been used not only to fit beauty standards but also to avoid issues in professional settings. Encourage your lawmakers to pass the Crown Act so we don't have to fear backlash from rocking our natural hair
We need more quality and purposeful videos like this one, BuzzFeed!
Clara Bey amen! I used to love buzzfeed yellow for the videos like this!
How ironic
I felt that girls pain when the mom was braiding her hair

"if a white slave owner was jealous of her female slave's hair she could make her cut it off" that's so heartbreaking and disgusting
Marsha Scott what?
Yeah but what white woman would be jealous of having hair that is harder to maintain
Black folk have the best genetics
Archer Läughlin you’re saying it’s hard to maintain because... you’re not black. Only black women know what it takes to keep our hair healthy.
Bianca Amethyst There were way too many type 3 girls in this video.
Bianca Amethyst My hair is 3b and yes I think there should be more 4c . Its the most beautiful hair I've ever seen.
Bianca Amethyst THANK YOU!!! (I have 4c hair too :/ )
Am I the only one who saw the gorgeous human at 1:22 😍😍
Gosh I saw them all throughout the video ♥️
That's awful how cruel it was if a white women was jealous they were forced to cut there hair omg 😡😤
i wouldve been so angry yo!
It was simply because they could.
Nay Nay black people do not get lice. It's possible but rare.
Nay Nay It's easier for Caucasian people or people with naturally straight hair to get lice.
Nay Nay black people don’t usually get lice. It’s a very rare occurrence.
this is the most aesthetically pleasing video buzzfeed has ever put out. nice little way to end off black history month. ❤️
If you think so, check out their lingerue throughout history. Even more stunning!
Laine Elizabete Lapa dude. It's lingerie please don't ruin it by saying lingerie is more stunning than people's cultures
I think you missed my point. We were talking about how aesthetically pleasing this video is and I suggested watching another one of Buzzfeed's videos which, in my opinion, is edited and filmed even more beautifully so I thought that the person who wrote the original comment would like that video too because it has a similar feel.
I love us black people 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
I may not be black, but I do love you black people!^^
I support you guys no matter what! :)
MintyKuma same!
I love us too.
Jayla Robinson I love you black people too! ✊✊✊
What if I said 'love us white people' what would happen (but seriously I friggin LOVE your hair)

Wow I kinda feel bad for what they had to go though just because of their hair.:(
Mars the Dutch angel Dragon Trust me, we still get a lot of B.S. for our hair today. It's better, but there's still work to be done.
Same it makes me soo sad that their people went through so much oppression. WHen you see how it gets to even the most tiny things...... Yikes! It becomes real folks... It feels real and to me almost like it is happening now.. :'(
But now it's a trend to where them in those same styles in the white culture.
regardless of your skin color and hair type, you can still get dreads. it is still called dreads either way.
Evaluna D but Egyptians came before the Vikings so?
All these comments about triggered white people but I still haven't seen a single white triggered person in the comments lol

And it's triggering some white ppl to comment about being triggered ironically

They're so beautiful
I am white and I never knew a lot of this stuff! I love these kind of videos because it teaches me about the hardships of others and what they've been through. It makes me feel awful for the struggle black people have gone through to conform to Eurocentric beauty standards just be accepted back then by white people, and the evolution of black self-love throughout the decades leading up to the present day.
Sriracha Gamer87 please do not feel awful. Just when you see racism speak out. One voice can stop it.
I'm so proud of us! ❤ We've gone through so much and we came out and forever we'll be strong! ✊🏽❤❤
Who else finds the "Not just black people...." comments annoying like do y'all understand that in order to have that curly hair one of your ancestors had to have been black but thanks for commenting about non-black hair in a video about black hair.
This is also very late but yes! It’s just ignorance and it’s frustrating!

The quote at the end is from India Arie, beautiful song called (I am not my hair) ft Akon worth the listen!
I'm black but my hair is quite thin, silky and very very long because my mom is mixed race. I really wish I had curly thick hair like these ladies
Honey it takes a while to manage hair like this. You should love your hair no matter what
I don't think being mixed has anything to do with having long hair
I'm black and have long hair
Only Black hair is strong enough to take all those different types of styling. The afro represented powerful exceptance...not rebellion
I'd never get a perm I'm in love with my big curly afro hair😍 So much hair is a blessing so many styles to do😆 Like If your a naturalsista!
same, no perms for me. Plus they burn and damage your hair. What's the point of getting it just for straight hair.
Danisha Davis SAME
Embrace the 'fro, my friends. Embrace the 'fro.
Yeah perms r bad
Danisha Davis I'm mad because my mom gave me a perm when I was little and I have a 2 year old sister and her hair is so curly and soft and I'm like we'll dang time to cut off my hair and start over
I'm so jealous of black women's hair!!! I wish I had that type of curly hair!!! My curly hair is so frizzy and all over the place I hate it lol. I'm white and I support #BLACKGIRLMAGIC :)
(Let's make this a thing)
Girl you do NOT want black hair 😂 I'll trade. It's hard to manage and thanks for spreading the positivity in the comment section 😃
Sonia Noodles heh
Sonia Noodles Her hair isnt typical black peoples hair. She seems mixed
Sonia Noodles Trust me its a lot of work I personally would rather have type 3 hair its easier 4c hair is harder to manage and with a family frustrating
I'm happy with my black curly hair, I wouldn't give it up for the world. It's apart of who I am.
And unfortunately, sometimes women just don't like their hair they have and prefer straight hair that resembles another ethnicity/race or that certain workplaces and even schools won't allow people to wear afros because they're "distracting"
I hope this answers your question. :)
You are so pretty
It sure does, but I've noticed that it's not just black women, women of all races that have straight hair tend to want curls and women with curls want straight hair anyway thank you very much for your answer :)
I'm not American and in my country we don't have a lot of black people, so I never knew that there were countries forbidding you from have your natural hair in certain environments. That's so sad.
Thank you :)
Nevena Palibrk may I ask what country ur from and the one u live in..sorry just curious
Sunny Days 2.0 it said made popular. As in it was around but it wasn't very popular to wear out
It only wasn't popular in the USA tbh and the whole population of black women do not reside in the USA
It was a cool video don't get me wrong, but it's not inclusive for all black women, it's an African American woman's hair journey
+Bethsaida Romelus Cause Africans aren't black...right....cause most of these hair styles they are talking about did not originate from Africa right....lmao
How stupid can you be?

These are the only buzzfeed videos that I like 👏🏼
I've seen a lot of comments of "waiting for triggered white people". Why would we be triggered it's just history of an African American woman's hair
Hi, you must be new
Because there's a ton of alt-right nazis on youtube. They hunt down every video featuring black people and complain about black people in them. Trust me, this video made a lot of them mad. I've already seen comments telling us to go back to Africa and making snide remarks about our hair and hair textures and I wasn't even looking for their comments, just strolling down the page.
Because of all those trends with white people and black hairstyles.
LoliceMe they tell us to go back to Africa but then they were the ones that brought us here
+Carla Dormeus Black ppl actually built a boat to go back to Africa, i think it was in the 60s...or before that, and white ppl destroyed it lol

This should be called, "Black Women's Hair Throughout AMERICA'S History". I thought they were gonna talk about Africa :/
they thought that people would get that it was about america because this video was posted during america's black history month.
Rianza Onuora i mean it kinda had the same effect on us even though we didnt go through the same things.

Chanel Davis I don't know if your comment got deleted, but it's racist because she said that blacks have better genetics and immutable features than any other race. That's racist. This isn't complicated.
You're not white youre some mid eastern mix.
GarrusN7 Awww don't be mad bc we don't age faster the than whites. Why are u so worried about us
Black American* hair throughout History. Hairstyles across Sub-Saharan Africa varie alot as you know it's a full contintent filled with alot of diffrent cultures, African Americans aren't the only black people.
Bethsaida Romelus no ones disappointed but the title should be changed to represent black American people not black people all over the world.
but black is an American word to describe black americans. if they were going to talk about other countries I'm sure they would have put the country's namen.
Nyanza Rojas it's not an American thing do Americans think they are the center of the world get educated before you make your self look stupid
Nyanza Rojas it's like black Americans never travel stay ignorant because America is the only place where blacks were persecuted FYI slavery in the carribean was worst than in america
Bethsaida Romelus I don't feel disappointed I am just stating a fact "black" doesn't mean American.
I'm still waiting to see that coarse hair like mine.... I have dry coily hair.....rip to all the combs😟😞😰
Kimani I have combination hair and the most coarse area is 4b but it's not as dry as it used to be because I started doing hair masks for dry hair. also sleeping with coconut oil in your hair in braided sections with a bonnet on helps keep in the moisture!
Beyoncé Knowles thank you girl friend for looking out for me🙌....its not that my hair is dry.....but where I live..it is considered dry😞
Kimani oh okay I get you! And no problem sis!
Maybe try a Keratin treatment at the hair dressers. I have super dry tight curls and it loosened them heaps and gave them more moisture. Also try brushing your hair when its wet and put some conditioner through it (before brushing) it makes it heaps easier and spreads the conditioner throughout your hair
keratin treatments have formaldehyde, which cause cancer.
on the last day of Feb. smh. thanks tho
It must have taken a long time to film, with all the extravagant costuming, period pieces, eras, actresses and editing. It's well made video, I can understand why it would take a while to put up :)
Leena Elyssa They've posted other videos. Not their fault you're late.
I see it as a great way to end off Black History Month.
This is one of my favorite videos on RUclips. Thank you, and I love that the women hug one another in nearly every decade. Black women being there for Black women is beautiful. :)
these are my favourite kinds of buzzfeed videos. like, everyone always shits on buzzfeed, saying they don't make any good videos but i have to disagree. whenever they upload educational - i think that's what this is? correct me if i'm wrong - videos like this, it makes me so happy. it's nice to know that people out there, including me, are learning more and more about black/african american culture and are learning to respect it more (: good job, buzzfeed.
definitely need more videos like these to educate us who aren't familiar with black culture and history
The perm scene and the slave getting her hair cut were the saddest😭

@vittoria how many pple?
all women in this video are absolutely the definition of beauty.... specially one at 1:18.. I doubt my sexuality.
really good video but I'm a little sad they kinda only focused on black people in America I would really love to learn more about those in Africa like maybe Nigeria or Somalia
Yes actually. Somalia hasnt always been Islamic. They do have a history and a culture just like every other country. I'm more focused on the distant past rather than the present. Also believe it or not girls do have hair under those head coverings and they do have to take care of that hair.
Miss_Kisa94 They focused on blacks in America because it's Black History Month. Wouldn't make sense to include any other black ethnicity.
Miss_Kisa94 well they spoke about native Africans too

Loved this video, and to any black people reading this I apologize for my ancestors wrong doings. ❤#blacklivesmatter
thenicestnightmare um, I guess my dead ancestors accept your also dead ancestors apology?
Unless you did it personally, you have no reason to apologise.
no need, you didnt do it
thenicestnightmare 🖒
Makes me wanna wear my natural hair out
its mishfish DO IT!!
its mishfish do it because some people like myself don't have as beautiful hair as you naturally
I understand being proud of your history, I think it's amazing! But saying things like "black girls do it better" or "black women have prettier hair" or "black hair is better than white hair" is just as bad as saying "white girls do it better" or "white hair is better than black hair"
If you want to end racism, it has to be ended both ways,
Don't be a hypocrite
Don't make everything about race
Don't act like all people of the opposite race are out to get you
Lec24 Lec24 I totally get what you're saying and this isn't coming from a place of hate but I totally agreed until the very last part.
Fantastic 101,
you are very well spoken, thank you for responding to me!
I'm sorry if I was out of line with my last comment. I was not directing my comment exclusively towards people of color, I think all races have a tendency to feel targeted by other races. For instance, people saying "white lives matter" or "all lives matter" because they felt excluded from the Black Lives Matter movement.
Lec24 preach 👐
"black girls do it better" is about cultural appropriation. We do black culture better than anyone else because we are black. So there's absolutely nothing offensive about that.
i think we started saying this to help bring confidence to our own people. When whites do it they're just being arrogant let's be honest
Egyptians and viking are 10,000ys apart what do you mean who don't know where it originated?!?!?
Lmao I was thinking the same damn thing
it is possible that different people at different time had dreads, so it's hard to find the origin. it's likely that african tribes started it before everyone else, but there is no evidence (i think there are ancient small statues from africa that depict women with some sort of dreaded hairstyle). they could have originated way before homo sapiens, after all, other homo species had hair similar to ours. if it's not combed, it starts to dread, even fine european hair which just takes longer.
Most of it comes from Julius Caesar who wrote that they had "hair like snakes". So then later artwork depicted the hair like that just based on his written description. (the Vikings and Celts themselves didn't have their own writing, so it's all relying on the writings of another culture that invaded them)
But it was not specific enough to be sure that they were dreads. It could also have been braids with stuff coating them. Here is a pretty good article: heathensofvinland.wordpress.com/2013/06/12/hair-like-snakes-my-hypothesis/
Finally something worth watching on this channel.
Why does this video have 1k dislikes like please tell me whats wrong with talking about different hairstyles of black women in the past to now 😂😂
Because some people take it as if they were trying to say black hair is better. I also think it might be because of the comments.
Am I the only person who never sees all the negative comments that everyone is talking about?? I'm out here SEARCHING for these triggered white people 😂
susan opondo why would white ppl get angry about this video?😂 wut
kitty cat I don't assume all white people are racist. Sighhhhhhh. Let me break it down. I have seen a lot of comments about how all these white people are triggered. I, myself, have not seen a single triggered white person. Hence, I am SEARCHING to see what everyone is talking about... Make sense now?
kitty cat that reach tho
+susan opondo ' I have seen a lot of comments about how all these white people are triggered' - it's people trying to stir up trouble because they have nothing better to do
Pastel Pepe stop harassing me.
I appreciate the dedication this type of hair requires. Those braids look like they take forever to do.
They do! I spend 2-4 hours lol
I love how the two women seemed so loving with each other
Our hair is just amazing 🌸 being born with this type of hair makes me feel so proud of my culture 💛
And then they say it’s “just hair”
It is though I mean if it’s not hair then what is it
