Ray, I had the same experience with the child safety lock. I had never had a car with that feature but when I was going nuts thinking I would have to tear the panel off, my nephew (known for mischief) said "What about the kid lock?". Voila, it was fixed. Real wakeup call for an older adult driver. 🥴 Addendum: The mischievous nephew was the one who set the lock. 😡

3:35 it happened to my sister in law. She got across town before her engine was knock, knock, knocking on heaven's door. The lube shop tried to ignore her claim. Lol The local Judge ordered the lube shop to pay another shop to install a new engine in her Chevy Cavalier. They put a newer Cobalt engine in there. When you go to buy an oil filter for a 1998 Cavalier it doesn't fit. Lol That lube shop changed owners shortly after from Tweaker Automotive Disrepair. Haha

An engineer friend of mine had a 1956 ford with a 312 cui engine that had not had the oil changed in over 100,000 miles! He did change the filter every 2000 miles and explained that oil doesnt break down, only the additives fail. He added an additive every 5000 miles, it was stp! That engine ran like a top and never used a drop of oil. He had a degree in petroleum engineering. The car had over 250,000 miles on it when he passed away. The oil outlasted the owner! Food for thought.

I’ve heard the oil on the finger thing and the reasoning behind it is that any microscopic particles suspended in the oil will latch on the the groove in your fingerprint and cause it to go sideways as opposed to clean oil that has no suspended particles will flow straight down.
I don’t follow this method for determining the life of my oil I actually try and change it early, but there’s the reasoning behind it and do with it as you wish!!

While in the service - I was probably out before you were born , they taught us mechanics their system . So many hours , so many uses , so much load , then check the system or do the maintenance . As I moved to aircraft that became more important . I don’t know if it was over done , I do know that we never had a vehicle or aircraft fail unless there was a fault in equipment . Stay safe , have fun .

I've never heard of that myth about oil life, but the old school test that I use is sight, smell and touch. Depending on the oil fresh would be yellow/gold and well spent would be almost black, that was nearing end of useful life but not all the way there. Next would be smell, does it smell burnt? Then touch, get some on your index finger, apply some light pressure with your thumb and see how it feels to rub them together - if it feels like it's catching or almost tacky then it's spent. Try it with a little fresh oil and some known bad oil to get a feel for it, it works but don't rely too much on the smell as some modern oil smells burnt right out the bottle lol

Except it has AFM which destroys engines and that one does not. Also if memory serves me right the 2013's have aluminum blocks while the older units had Cast Iron blocks. Personally I would not buy or own any GM product after 2007. I know people have had good luck, but after 2007 the quality and longivity of GM really went to crap the same with pretty much every brand made except maybe Toyota and Honda which has effected them as well, just not as bad as the other brands. I was in need of a new truck and was about to buy a new truck until I researched all the issues they have now and the price they charge for them. I decided it is not worth the extreme cost so I looked high and low and found a really nice 2003 GMC from an elderly man and purchased it for 6k. I figure its cheaper to buy one of those and replace the engine and transmission when the time comes then to buy a new truck and get a more reliable vehicle for less.

If you find a 2003 that hasn't been beaten to all hell or corroded away, that's money. Easy to work on and parts are plentiful. This 2007 Suburban is beautiful. It is a gas hog but the owner is saving a fortune not buying a new SUV, which I would bet this will outlast.
Even a 2013 is acres better than a 2023. I think about 5-6 years ago we reached the point where buying new cars is like going to the casino. The house always wins.

@@Starchface They are all over the place dude. Facebook Market place I see good ones all the time still worth fixing. Now I live in Texas so we are not effected by the rust belt like some of you up North, but you can come down South and buy a good used older truck. If we will start saying No to these crazy prices they will come back down, we also need to tell the Government to get its nose out of private business the EPA has too much power and they are the reason we are in this mess to begin with! Anyway I hear you, but if your patiant good ones are still available. I paid $6500 for mine with 174k miles. The Body is in great shape and interior as well so I will drive it until it needs a new engine and transmission and will buy a new engine from Powertrain products when it fails. Only thing I have had to do to it which is my fault for not inspecting it better is a rear main seal was leaking bad so had to address that and tie rods are needed soon as well.

The 'insufficient blood' ramblings reminded of something that happened many years ago. A friend had quite a serious car accident, lost quite a bit of blood and was hospitalised. A few weeks later the hospital released him, advising that he shouldn't drive, operate heavy machinery, etc for a while. Being the 20-year-old he was, first thing in mind was to see his girlfriend, trouble being that as soon as things started to get a little 'cosy' he promptly fainted! Not enough blood to go around, apparently, and young men's bodies being young men's bodies, i'll leave you to guess where the blood-flow was prioritised!

We had a mechanic change the oil on a motor. He came to fill it up and he couldnt get it filled to the right level on the dip stick. Turned out he hadnt put the sump bung back in so new oil went into waste oil barrel.

Good morning! I enjoyed the Sema videos a lot. You looked like a boy in a toy store. And I decided to look through all the comments… and I can’t believe some of the remarks people make. Why would you, as a viewer, not think that some videos would be made ahead of time in case of a lapse in recording new ones. The fact that Troy was gone and all of a sudden he’s back would have been a huge clue🥸 . Amount other clues it somewhat amazes me…. Making a video takes a tremendous about of time and patience. If Ray is holding the camera and using one hand to do repairs, we’ll… I got all I can do to use 2 hands. I enjoy the effort and humor of the videos. If you don’t like them, remember what God made, the “off” button. And the snarky comments….well enough said. Enjoy everyone ! Great work! Stay safe, Bill

Had the child safety lock experience myself this week. Took out the kiddie safety seats to fit adults in the back and the rear doors wouldn't open. Couldn't find the switch to turn the safety lock off - turns out you need the ignition key to insert into a tiny opening in the rear doors and turn the key a quarter turn. Lesson learned.

Heard about giving your old oil the finger many years ago. A lab tech at Veedol told me 'that's absolutely incorrect' (not the phrase he used but meant the same). He told to try it with new oil and I was surprised to find that some oils behave that way when new and some don't.

Regarding the oil not following contours of the fingerprint.... The way I figure it, if I'm draining it and it does either of those things, it doesn't really matter since it's not in the car anymore. ;) The only thing I look for in drained oil is sparkles. Lacking any of that, I just drain and replace.
