Rainman Ray's Repairs.. Awesome video. My dad had a little Ford Ranger with a 4 cylinder that had 8 spark plugs. He couldn't believe it when I told him about it. He called me and said "you're right, it does have 8 spark plugs". I laughed and said yeah I know.
I drove a Ford Ranger back in the day that was like that.
I have one like this. Excellent fuel economy. I believe the second spark fires on the exhaust stroke
Makes me feel good to see a mechanic struggling the same way I do when I'm working on my cars. It means I'm not always ignorant of some mechanic's trick and the struggle isn't a commentary on my poor skills. I do learn from watching these videos and I appreciate the work it takes to make them.
I laugh when they have to on the floor and do the fix without the use of the lift 😂, welcome to the life of a DIY
Nah… you’re probably a little slow
Nissan had an engine like this; The 1988 Nissan Stanza 2 liter 4-cylinder engine also had 8 spark plugs. I had this car in high school and it was so much fun teasing the local farm boys who had big block v8 pickup trucks. I'd taunt them with "My car has 8 plugs in it too" and they'd refuse to believe it and when I'd show them, the look on their faces was priceless.
Dual-spark plugs seemed to have likely been used the most in the late-1980s and the 1990s.
Over this side of The Pond, we call the 'wiper cowl' the 'scuttle panel'...!
Breakfast with Ray! Pass the brake cleaner.
Don't take the comments about stealing someone's one liner too serious. I would say yes, Eric O, Erik the Car Guy, Chris Fix, and many others are some of the originators of RUclips auto repair videos, however, you have made your own channel that is unique to them. There is a reason you have grown so quickly. You are doing a great job not only with the videos but the commentary. Keep up the great work and don't let anyone here in the comments get you down.
Even if this Eric dude was the first to use the phrase, unless he successfully trademarked the phrase, there can be no complaints.
And if Erik HAD trademarked it, it would only prevent people from using it as their own trademark, and only in markets / legal jurisdictions where he successfully filed.

Unless, of course, the "offended" party has a lot of money and lawyers and can afford to SLAPP some small local business down over something like "Taco Twosday" to try and own "Taco Tuesday". It can also help if you have enough money to hire a famous sports dude to make commercials trying to portray yourself as the 'little guy' trying to 'free' the phrase.
Sorry, I went off in to a rant about Taco Bell being corporate jerks...
@@MonkeyJedi99 I think people insinuate that I’m trying to just copy other channels
@@RainmanRaysRepairs Hey rainmanrayrepairs, have you ever made a power steering line by copying a old rusted one? Is it possible? Can you find it the part? I live in Wisconsin. So it would be hard to find one in a junk yard. I suppose I can try. For a 1990 to 1993 honda accord. There 4 lines that go into the gearbox. One was replaced already because the part was bought new. The first one on the far right goes to the pump. The remaining two go into the speed sensor (which I can't find new parts for).
@@RainmanRaysRepairs You, Eric, and a few others I have watched, all do great work, and you all have a little bit different ways of humor. It has been said that imitation is the best compliment. Most of the times I (a non-native speaker/reader/writer) get your jokes.
I wish that when my trusted mechanic of the last 13 years finally retires, I will find another shop to work on my cars for the next few decades that I expect to be able to drive.
@@MonkeyJedi99 They SHOULD be held to the light and identified as the corporate jerks which they are. Just one more reason why I avoid patronizing them. Their little Chihuahua doesn't need any more money.
the civic engine uses iridium spark plugs at least the ones over here in Australia do. The 2 civics i have have done about 100,000km and have been replaced once.
It just amazes me how much enjoyment we get out of watching a rolling empty spray can. 😅
ANOTHA!!!!

Love your videos Ray. I am about 2 hours from your shop. If I need repairs, I’m calling you knowing I’ll be treated with respect and fair.
I'm so jealous!
Have to wonder if the front plugs were changed but the back never did because they didn't know a 4-cylinder engine would have 8 plugs. Great video for a Saturday morning.
You’re right. I think the same thing. Someone changed the front four and probably charged for eight. Hard to trust other people working on your car. I’ve recently had a bad experience with a shop that is supposedly specialists on Toyota. Charged me for new brakes complete with shoes, drums and hardware. Also charged at Toyota OEM prices. 7 times returning before I said enough and did them myself. That’s when I discovered I got screwed. Like I said . Hard to trust.
My Honda fit 2005 has 8 spark plugs as well
That's highly doubtful, given the fact that if the owner changed the plugs the last time, why would he give Ray the go-ahead to change them now if they could do the job themselves..
I would also offer, If the person went to a parts counter asked for plugs for that specific engine, it most likely would have been caught then and there..
@@IR-nq4qvI bought this car with 126,000 miles. Never touched the plugs or had anyone else touch em, can't speak for the previous owner.
When I saw that can of brake clean heading out the door, I thought for sure it was headed home to the factory for a re-fill.
Denso plugs would have been original Ray, I wonder how many 30k plug changes that’s had with just the front 4 being changed???? I would never expect 8 plugs in a 4 pot hybrid 🤯 good work my friend 👍🏻
No. 30K plugs are copper, they have much thicker electrode. Those tiny tip came out from the front are Iridium or Platinum (generally last 100K+). From the state of the plugs, I would say none of the 8 spark plugs have ever been changed.
Sorry but NGK is the OEM for the 08 hybrid civic, not denso. Those were most definitely the Original plugs based on their condition
11:45 and that's why I love these videos. Imagine this being your car and having enough money to do new spark plugs but not the valve cover. then seeing this video and seeing the oil on the spark plug coils. That would seal the deal for me. Okay, so you're not blowing smoke or hey... that oil leak isn't that bad. Yes it is!! it's killing spark plugs, making your engine run bad, AND causing a leak. all that is made ONE HUNDRED PERCENT CLEAR at the 11:45 mark in this video.
Wow , super clean inside that engine for 180k. Those plugs are toast ! lol Makes me wonder how many back yard mechanics only change the front plugs not realizing it has 8 !
Actually while ur there, there is a oil cap cam cover on the right side of the head, you can see it when removing that one bolt holding the harness, That too is also a known leaking spot and looks to be leaking as well…
I remember Nissan, or Datsun as they called themselves back in the day used 8 plugs on the pickup 4 cylinders. I think it was for emissions back in the carburetor days.
Fun stuff.
Nissan 200SX was FI and had 8 plugs as well.
Always nice to have definitive solutions to vague problems.
I used to fear the idea of a valve cover gasket change and oil leaks, but since watching your channel, I no longer fear them, I owing that it's just a matter of how you approach it.
Yup. Its all just nuts and bolts like everything else. And electrical connectors. Just take your time and you can do anything if you have the tools. Also, on bigger jobs, take pics. On parts with a lot of bolts that are different sizes, use cardboard templates so you know where each bolt goes back
Had ordered 8 Iridium spark plugs a few years back and the guy working on my 03 HCH wanted to argue there were only 4, until the ship owner checked and confirmed it to be 8.
Was really gonna get shafted.
Amazing what details Rock Auto gives you about your car when replacing parts 😎
Rock auto is the best. Prices and selection is amazing. Their return policy is fantastic. They didn’t supply the right starter to me twice (I have a weird Canadian VW golf model) and returning was a breeze. I swear by them and recommend to everybody.
Also a great example that the operation doesn't look super complicated; YET you need the right tools and extensions in your arsenal to do it. And of course the knowledge and experience of things to mind and concider that car surgeon Ray often displays to have! :)
Ray is Correct! Hondas , Toyota's Don't break as munch. Undoubtedly Y Wife has one for reliable transportation
its just nuts and bolts :)
I think that might just be econoboxes...
The cars aimed towards the "enthusiast crowd" tend to be simple and have ample space in them - even including my Tiburon, which most people don't consider a proper enthusiast car (what with it being a front wheel drive coupe with a small V6). Plenty of access, relatively easy to work on as these things go. Parts are laid out logically, most parts are generic enough to be able to be substituted; even a full ECU replacement doesn't look like it would be outside of my skill range. This is what I'd expect cars to be. But nope...
Compare that with my mother's Citroen C3.. hoo boy, most components are crammed so close to the firewall and beneath cowlings that I almost get the urge to drop the engine for what should be minor jobs. Plastic parts everywhere, covers on everything, specialist tools expected, and what should be "in plain sight" is still a pain to get to because of the tiny hood on the engine bay. Or the mess that is the newest Ford Focus with the 1.0 EcoBoom. And the myriad integrated computer systems which will refuse to work if one of the modules is swapped out without the manufacturer's blessing.
It seems to me that the manufacturers of "boring" economical cars will take any steps they can to not only make the cars hard to work on yourself, but make simple jobs intentionally difficult in order to be able to extract more money out of customers in parts, service and repair costs. They sell the cars at "affordable" prices and woo them with economy figures, then gouge the customer on financing interest rate and required service, and make sure to make the cars out of materials that will fail as soon as the manufacturer's liability period is over, and make the car uneconomical to repair.
This is why I'll likely only be buying used "enthusiast models" in the future, why Right to Repair should be ratified and enforced by the UN, and the creation of these expensive throwaway products should be illegal.
1.1 hours? That's what shops charge for a cabin air filter.
Ray hits the cowling, and i scream at the same time…..AAAAAAAAHHHHHH NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!
Nice!! Always fun to see different engines and engineered solutions!
My brother's Mercedes had 2 plugs per cylinder, a total of 12 plugs @ £12 each!
PS Greetings from the UK.
Here in Europe it often happens that there are 2 spark plugs per cylinder. Several Alfa Romeo models have something called the Twin Spark, as do several motorcycles
In the 90s Ford had a 4 cylinder with 2 plugs per. Put them in Ford Rangers.
Ducati also have two plugs per cylinder on some of their models
Honda have been doing this in motorcycles since at least the 80s (VT500 in 1982 & the like).
Chrysler Hemi.

I would say they got all the life from the plugs that came out.
I am by no means mechanically inclined but I love watching your videos. You definitely know your stuff. Wish to hell you lived close by as you would be my mechanic of choice but unfortunately I live in the Pacific Northwest Canada.
I think it has 8 plugs to burn off all that oil. Nice video Ray!
Think it's an 8 cylinder disguised as a r banger
It is Honda i-DSI (Intelligent-Dual Sequential Ignition system) type of engine.
It consist of two spark plugs, instead of one for each cylinder.
Good job Ray! That is the second time I have seen 8 spark plugs on a 4 cylinder engine. The first one was a Datsun pickup my brother in law had decades ago!
😂😂Throwing the empty brake cleaner can is HILARIOUS!!!!!😅
You gotta love that even when he's not embellishing with the empty can follow, he still sets up another shot almost every time to kick the can a second time and watch it roll. It's totally unbelievable, but we love it.
I buy the shit by the 12 can case from a friend at a manufacturer and it's still too expensive for me to throw two cans at a single thing, nor is it any good for me or the environment. It's better that I conserve. I do most of my engine case washing with good ole soap and water.
Hi, I'm a new subscriber and I just wanted to say that I may not be a Certified auto mechanic but I can defend myself. Of all the youtuber mechanic I follow, your channel is by far more entertaining and educational. Thanks and I'm hoping to learn from you in the future. Keep up the good work.
Ray, it was you who made me look for the service mode notch on my lady's Odyssey. I thank you for that, much easier to work on. Also, service mode eliminates the requirement for extra lighting.
Nice job Ray! Soooo many people (mechanics & DIYers) skip the back plugs and just replace the fronts! Seen it time and time again.
The way I understand the 8 plug thing is, one set is independently controlled from the other set. Along with the variable valve timing the plugs are controlled by the ECM to increase fuel economy and power.
Good morning Ray, great video as always. I love Honda's reliability. I used to have a '99 Honda CRV 4WD, did regular PM on it and replaced timing belt once at about 200,000 miles ( preventive). Never had any major mechanical problems with it. In 2019 I finally traded it in for a 2018 Honda HRV. At the time I traded it, the CRV had 423,000 miles and still running perfect with no problems. Now I get to see if the HRV holds up as well as my old CRV. I feel confident.
Nice to see you hate America so much.
By the way there are only tube seals and tubes at the front, because the plugs are angled outwards from the center line and if you also had tubes at the rear they would prevent you ever removing the rocker cover, as they would form a v pattern.
I completely forgot that some people call them rocker covers lol
In the U.K. most car parts have different names.@@tarikbosniangod1864
Good morning Ray! Love your channel. I had an old Ford Ranger 4cyl 8plug, super fuel mileage. Most piston aircraft have 2 plugs per cylinder timed a few degrees apart, better power, less fuel consumption, and of course, safety in redundancy.
Should make a video of the can of brakekleen rolling thru the neighborhood..as it goes grocery shopping..to the movies..etc...lol✌️
I just got done changing spark plugs in a 2010 Tacoma with the big 2.7L. The dude waited till 150k to have his OEM plugs replaced and they came out hard. But no broken plugs and now he has all new iridium plugs!
Ray, I am following all your vids and you truly inspired me to do a lot of things myself on my very beloved Honda Civic Hybrid FD3 2008. I also enjoyed many Honda 's before, just to let you know. They probably don't break very often...😂
honda civic: officially "the best car ever". By some metric, other cars _may be_ better but yeah, engineering perfection is a Honda.
Compared to gas Hondas & Toyota Hybrids, old Honda hybrids get mechanically totaled early: early death of hybrid battery + extra maint + design failures + .
Plus in the real world their fuel mileage was not good (were considered COMPLIANCE CARS -to meet some govt regulation).
Wonder how all of the Hybrids in the 2023 Hondas will hold up in 15 years? (most Accords & CRVs and in Europe all Civics)
You really need a parts washer. I can't work without one. I am old school.
Older Ford Ranger 4 cylinder engines also had 8 spark plugs. The 2nd set had awkward access
Its comforting to see such a familiar car on the channel, and since i do my own work, it felt like i was watching myself work on my car in fast forward 💀
Same, except this time it's actually my car 😅
@@farmeryaeg Really? THIS car? Tell me, do you have a service bill from previous years? I'm wondering if someone changed the 4 front plugs, but didn't do the back set because they were awkward or they just didn't know they were there?

31:50 Keep a small tip tie available so you can wick the seal around the tube using the tip of it before even bothering to apply downward pressure. Also, might want to pick up a 1in extension to get past the lip putting those plugs back in at the back. 46:00 the Snap-on deep and an inch and a half extension will allow you to spoon feed the bolts on the side of the head without launching them to the depths.
When I seen the video title I said to myself "Oh no! Now he's going to tear apart a CVT!".🤣
Noooo waaaay! 😢
That twin plug setup has been common on Hondas for a long time and coil failure on the rear bank is very common.
Dual plug also frequently found on older Nissan engines, many Mercedes and a lot of Alfa motors. (Probably others that I don't recall right now)
One of the biggest traps for techs not familiar with these systems when it comes to intermittent misfire, rough running and minor power loss diagnoses.
And it is an extremely common mistake for shops to forget to replace the rear plugs.
The L13A i-DSI engine has been used in the Jazz/Fit as well.
@@meeder78 Yep.
I forgot to mention that because of the wiring layout, it is also common for these engines to suffer from CKP sensor failure due to over load on the rear coils as the wiring for both is in a common harness.
When the plugs are too worn, or there has been an ongoing oil leak that damaged the wiring insulation you get current leak into the sensor wiring that causes a misfire or in an extreme case, fries the PCM
@@meeder78 Funny that shops who commonly 'forget' to change the rear plugs don't forget to charge for replacing them.
@@oldbatwit5102 --LOL, but you are probably right....
And select fords
ray great job as always. I did notice some old silicone by the rear of the valve cover you missed on pass side where you gobbed on the black rtv. the missed rtv was bluearound the bolt hole. . To me this was critical because that's where it had been leaking before. 8 plugs is insane. just more crap to fail
In an airplane, 2 plugs per cylinder for safety. Here, it might be to just get a more complete burn.
But realistically, how often do plugs fail? These days they last 100,000km or more. Even coils last a long time unless they are poor quality to begin with or damaged.
@@MattJMillsNZ In a road vehicle, who cares. You just pull to the side of the road. In an airplane, you want backups. And it may not even be about the plugs rather the magnetos or CDI. There's two sets of those for safety. So you need two sets of plugs per cylinder if only because you have two magnetos. You get the bonus of a more complete burn with the extra plugs.
Did I miss the trumpeting introduction of brake clean?
Also, I saw Erik O use that introduction too.
I had no idea how close you actually worked to me that awesome I absolutely love your channel and learning little bits here and there
Hey Ray, if lubrication is to reduce friction and enable things to slide more easily, shouldn't it be lubri-can not lubri-cant?
No, it’s lubri-cant make shit grind.
8 spark plugs. Wow that brings back memories. I remember having to explain to customers with an early 90's Ford Rangers with a 2.3l that they had 8 plugs and wires. As a Parts Counter guy got some really nasty comments on those. Felt really bad for Mechanics
All the 2.3 rangers had those plugs. Although, contrary to popular opinion, they did not both fire at the same time. The plugs on the exhaust side fired 90 degrees after the plus on the Intake side. They fired on the exhaust stroke for Emissions reasons to fire unburned fuel.
I’m glad you showed the seal bore.. even I was like 😬 for a minute there.

FYI, apparently there are some fake NGK spark plugs around. Usually a "too good to be true" price is a giveaway, but there was a recent YT video showing how to identify them. There are some clues on the packaging as well as the plugs themselves. Measuring their resistance, they were all over the place and way more than spec.

Good morning Ray and Happy Saturday
I believe the reason for 2 spark plugs is even burning in the cylinders where you have a single cam blocking the ideal centre location for a spark plug in the middle of the valves
Also works as redundancy
Also as with aircraft engines, two per cylinder (redundancy). But as this thing won't fall out of the sky with no ignition, it is for more efficient combustion.
@@bigkenny66 Also in aircraft and dragster engines it increase power output.
@@bigkenny66 Aircraft engine are way bigger thn cars... imagine a 5.7l(360ci) 4 cylinder or the 6.4L(390ci) 4cyl that's a big combustion chamber! since they are 2 valve/cyl it for sure need the 2 spark plug so the flame front is equal on the piston. one combustion chamber in the O-360 is equal to the volume of that whole honda engine

i use a seal puller on the spark plug tube seals on those, works for me pretty well
Good spotting of the extra 4 plugs and coils - they often go unnoticed! Likewise good to apply new sealant on the timing cover seam, and dielectric grease inside the coil boots. Might it have been an opportunity to check the valve clearances while the cover was off?
That break can b-roll was really rolling 😂😂😂😂
Ray you have a wonderful weekend with your family and friends.
@27:41 I could never get the spark ⚡️ plug tube seals in without tearing at least a few of them. Yet, I see people on RUclips hammering them in without worrying about never damaging them lol.
Although not common, several versions of Nissan engine (and a tiny number of others) have had two plugs per cylinder. I ran across it on the 200SX (if memory serves) back in the '80s. On aircraft engines, it's not just common, it's necessary to have two independent ignition systems in order to get type certification.
Also Ford Ranger 2.3, all versions of the modern Hemi, Ford 6.2 SOHC, newer Harley Davidsons, various different 2 strokes in snowmobiles and jetskis, some outboard boat engines. Even seen a large chainsaw that had 2 tiny 8mm spark plugs, one on either side of the head.
Hondas dont break! You know this ray.
judging by that strap erosion (and the PITA of accessing those rear plugs), I'd be tempted to replace with double iridiums to reduce recurrence (iridium on strap as well as core). Platinums are cheaper than iridium but iridiums last 25% (or more) longer
Thanks Ray and as the Great Eric O would say, it's good to see the HONDOO getting some TLC
