- George Wagner, IV is standing trial for the April 2016 murders of eight members of the Rhoden and Gilley families. Wagner IV faces 22 counts including eight counts of aggravated murder with death penalty specifications, aggravated burglary, conspiracy, tampering with evidence and forgery.
Wagner’s brother, Edward “Jake” Wagner, and his mother, Angela Wagner, have already pleaded guilty to taking part in the conspiracy to murder the eight Rhoden and Gilley family members over their desire to obtain full custody of the then two-year-old daughter Jake shared with victim Hanna May Rhoden. Angela and Jake Wagner have agreed to testify against their family members.
George “Billy” Wagner, the father of Jake and George, faces the same 22 counts.
On the morning of April 22, 2016, family members found Chris Rhoden, Sr., 40, and his cousin, Gary Rhoden, 38, dead in Chris’ mobile home on Union Hill Rd. Chris Sr.’s ex-wife, Dana Manley Rhoden, 37, and their children, Hanna May Rhoden, 19, and Chris Rhoden Jr., 16, were found shot in the head in their sleep in their mobile home down the road. Hanna May had given birth days earlier to a baby girl who was not harmed. Clarence "Frankie" Rhoden, 20 and his fiancee, Hannah "Hazel" Gilley, 20, were also found shot to death in their sleep. Their six-month-old son was in between them covered in blood but unharmed. Frankie’s four-year-old son was unharmed in the home as well.
Kenneth Rhoden, 44, was found shot once in the eye in his camper on Left Fork Rd. more than seven miles away.
Angela Wagner’s mother, Rita Newcomb, pleaded guilty in 2019 to a misdemeanor count of obstruction. She had been charged with forgery and obstruction of justice for lying about signing and notarizing custody documents related to Hanna May, Jake and George’s children. Newcomb has agreed to testify against her family members.
Billy Wagner’s mother, Fredericka Wagner, was initially charged with obstruction of justice and forgery for allegedly lying about purchasing a bullet-resistant vest for Billy. The charges were dropped after it was discovered a plate in the vest was manufactured after the homicides. Prosecutors have said they may refile the charges at a later date. Fredericka has been subpoenaed to testify.

The Wagners did it so they could get custody of the young daughter Jake had with his ex Hanna Rhoden, prosecutors said. Jake indeed won sole custody of the child, now 8, after the murders. The Wagners moved to Alaska. That all changed after authorities arrested them in November 2018, sparking a legal battle lasting almost four years.

I’m binging this trial, so I am about 10 days behind, however, allowing the folks who’ve participated & taken a plea deal to OPT OUT of being filmed or audio recorded is absolutely ridiculous. They list their right to “privacy” when they participated in a crime! I’m so frustrated w/ so many aspects. I feel prosecution (at this point) is blowing it.
Asking not to have her face shown is one thing, but this is a public trial. The judge is wrong to rule out the audio for the witness. Just one more backwards thing about this trial.
I agree, don’t show them but let us listen to audio 🤷🏼♀️this is nuts… What’s public about it? When we don’t get to hear. They should have a narrator that tells us what the person said. So we can piece together the story 🤔
It is not up to the judge. It is Ohio Law that allows people to opt out. The judge is there to enforce that law. I don’t agree either, it should be public. Ohio is certainly behind modern times

Hello, watching every day. Followed this case from Day ONE back when there was some very interesting posts on the Piketon Topix Boards (gone now). Anyhow, how can we see the transcripts of those who opt out of video AND sound? Thank you.
i came her just to find that out can we at least know what Rita testified about
I’ve just been following the press coverage of the case on Twitter and read the daily updates of the transcripts of the days. They report the testimony of those that opt out.
I think I heard Angela is opting out...which I don't see how she has any rights,being a criminal

I think the prosecutor is doing a good job. She is not disorganized. She is putting down the groundwork from multiple angles so she can connect the dots. You will see as she is beginning to connect the dots.
I’m not sure I agree. I feel like they are overwhelming the jury with too much information. And so far, George Wagoner looks innocent of murder even by the prosecution witnesses who have testified.
She is a little sloppy with it. Like this is her second big case or something

BS that Jake and Rita opted out of voice and vid. I’m almost onboard with opting out on the vid Portion but not on their voices at minimum.
This prosecutor is driving me crazy! They have better why did they send her? Is it bc they already have Jake and Angela? They didn’t even make them allocute to what they did in public! The biggest crime in our state and they send her?
I totally agree. She’s just awful. Never lays foundation. Doesn’t understand what hearsay is. Umm ummm ummm. She’s beyond annoying and inept.

When does Jake testify
Jake may not have to testify because he has already pleaded guilty. To avoid death row he had to give evidence to investigators that would indite Billy and George IV. Angela gave evidence against her mother Rita Newcomb for forging docs as notary. Angela recd 30 years.

Jake has to testify that was part of his pleade deal
Jake has to testify to the “satisfaction “ of the state in order to avoid the death penalty. Technically he can get up there and testify and they can still stay it wasn’t enough. Same for Angela.

I think I saw somewhere that jake pleading guilty saves HIS life, testifying is what saves the family
No ol George IV doesn’t look inbred at all. I imagine his uncle dad and aunt mom will write to him from their respective prisons.

They won’t be allowed to write any of their family members and will not allow any communication between them either. They won’t even be put in the same prison.
