Despair can turn even the kindest man cruel, if pushed hard enough and too quickly. "Evil Superman" might be an overdone trope, but it is a long lasting trope for a reason. And I disagree with the criticism of the DCEU Superman, here, because losing such a human version of Superman to something as evil and unbeatable as the hopelessness of the Anti-Life Equation is, in my opinion, the most effective usage of the trope (even if not fully explored, yet), in a similar vein to what was done in Injustice. Omni-Man, Homelander, both of these expies of this iconic hero believe that the humanity within them must be killed. Because then, they'll truly be strong. What makes Superman strong is not all his powers; it's because, despite all that he can do, despite his origins... in his heart, he IS human. He is vulnerable. But that means he is also resolved. His strength doesn't come from his powers. It comes from his heart. A heart that can still break. A heart that shouldn't be broken.

Nolan could beat Superman if they weren't on a planet with a yellow sun. It's specifically showcased in the Flaxan rampage that Nolan has no such weakness. If Homelander trained in superhuman combat he could likely be as strong as Immortal and hold his own against a Viltumite, but like Immortal, even thoough their strength is on par, their durability is much lower.
I can see Superman being the DPS guy while Nolan teaches him fancy new ways to curbstomp a planet in seconds. Homelander would just straight up die from friendly fire.
