Primary differences between the "Slash & Spread" and "Mathematical" methods can be expressed in terms of their results. In Sara's example of the "Slash & Spread" process, she ONLY affects the height of the bag. Her modification is applied to only one dimension of the project. Depth and width remain unchanged. However, if the "Mathematical" approach is used, printing the pattern at 120% scale will result in a bag that is taller AND WIDER AND DEEPER. Both approaches to pattern modification are valuable tools to understand, but the clearly have different applications. Which approach you choose to use will depend upon what you are trying to accomplish!! If you only want to change one dimension (for example, "taller") then go with "Slash & Spread". If the desired result is changing all dimensions ("bigger"), then go with printing and a scaled value. Both methods work but they work in different ways. Both have their applications and it is good to understand both.

If you only want to edit the width of a pattern do you have to multiply out both the width and the height or can you just edit a pattern based on changing the width and using the original measurements for height??

If I like a particular bag online, I take all the info I can get, and draft my own pattern and make it any size I want.

I noticed that the 90% decrease measurements (for the exterior top)is actually bigger than the original.
    Shouldn't it be smaller? 🤔
