Thank you for this! As a plus size cosplayer, it's hard to find patterns in our sizes so this was really beneficial to us to finally start creating and sewing again.

So glad you enjoyed the video! I buy old patterns on Etsy, and I don't worry about what size they come in. I love the vintage patterns! Thanks for watching!
you are a total lifesaver! i bought a rare vintage sewing pattern but it was in kids sizing 😩😩 luckily it was teen sizing but still. you don’t know how much this tutorial has helped me!!!
I love how simple you made this resizing sewing patterns video!! It's just what I needed to know for several older patterns I have!!! Thank you so so much ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you so much for this video. I have to size up a pattern and didn't know how to do it properly. And I've saved your video so I can reference it while I work.
It appears some others were wondering about resizing sleeves, etc. I have a ton of vintage patterns to resize. I would, also love to see an extended video, explaining all the pattern pieces. Thanks so much for this, it was really helpful! I guess the smartest thing to do, if anyone has the time, would be to make a mock-up, first, out of a sheet, or something, just to make sure everything fits.
So glad the video was helpful to you! You are right, I should do another video with more info on other body parts. I will add that to my to do list. Thank you!!
Don't worry even the petite, slim people like myself have to tweak the pattern here and there. I follow a UK 🇬🇧 size 8 pattern size but eg the bust area will gape😥😭 so I always have to amend this area. Ha ha! We all need adjusting.
You are an angel on earth for putting this together! It feels awful to be locked out of the mainstream clothing market, and even worse to be excluded by a lot of patterns too so this was a wonderful resource to be able to find! Thank you so much ❤
You are very welcome! I'm so glad the video was helpful to you! Yes, it is very hard finding nice clothes in larger sizes. And when you can find them, they are so expensive. Best to just make our own!
I've decided that I don't want to buy any more patterns and I have several that I never used but want to use but they're too small for me now. So thank you for posting this!
Thank you so much for this video! Like you, I was wear a size 22, I have some patterns that are size 16 and I had read not to resize a pattern more than 2 inches more from the original pattern, which made no sense, so I went looking for more information and the first link Google showed was your video and I am so grateful to you for sharing your knowledge with me.
Thanks for the video. I just found, after repeated hunting, two patterns from my youth that I totally want to wear again. No, definitely not 1960s hot pants or bell bottoms and midriff baring halter top at 70 and fat for me, but a pattern for a lounge dress I loved and triple armhole wrap dress I plan to make a swimsuit cover out of like my mom made for me. Bless you for this simple explanation.
Hi from the UK 🇬🇧 I often see vintage patterns in shops but never buy them as know they won't fit my petite, slim figure but now I will have to buy one and adjust it. I have always been terrified of adjusting a pattern. At sewing classes I have always left that to the tutor. Thank you for this very informative video. I will have to watch it a few times before attempting to adjust the pattern.
Thank you for this video!! I have so many of my Mom’s old patterns and they are 16s. This is going to be so helpful in me making some of my favorites to fit me! This is genius!!
Thank you for posting this!! My daughter is a bit larger in the bust area and until I saw your video, I was just guestimating the process. Now I know how it works, I can do my adjustments much more precise!
Thank you!!!! I got super excited to do a pattern I had only to discover it only went to 18 (40inch bust) and I'm more of a 48" so I'm glad there's a way to fix it. Too bad it's gonna make my least favorite part of sewing that much more tedious lol
Thank you for doing such a great video, I am making my Sons friend some shorts, but he is 2 sizes bigger and I had already cut them pattern. I managed to resize it using your video and he loves them x
I never thought to buy a pattern in the wrong size, and re-size it. Thanks for all the info. I’ll check your other videos. My biggest problem is wrapping my head around how much ease is in a pattern and adjusting accordingly.
Yes, ease can be difficult to understand, especially when it changes from one pattern to the next. Are they making a pattern for a garment that fits tight, or loose? That's why I just go by the measurements on the pattern package. If they say size 18 fits a 44 inch bust, and you need 48 inch bust, then go up two sizes. Hope this helps! Thanks so much for watching!
Your video was just what I was looking for. I have all my patterns I ever bought. Got away from sewing cloths because I wore scrubs for work. Now I am retired every thing is tee shirts. Have a favorite top I voted but of course I am not a 32 anymore. Does this work for pants also. Glad I found you.
Thank you so much, easy to understand! Wish you made more videos!you really know what you’re doing and are able to explain So anyone can understand!Thank you
You're a life saver! I'm making a prom outfit and I was given the wrong measurements for a corset. I was so scared I'd have to by a new pattern! Luckily I measured my self just to make sure before I ever touched the fabric.
I can't thank you enough for this post, you explained it perfectly, you raised some good points on enlarging this pattern and I greatly appreciate this. Hope you make more videos.
Fantastic, thank you so much for this. I am not definitely not, a standard size and have always been frustrated trying to readjust a pattern to my size. This is so simple and so easy thank you so much
Oh wow! Awesome! I'm so glad to hear that you used this video for that purpose. I hadn't even thought of that, and so glad it worked well for you! Thanks for watching!
I would add that once you get above size 12, they jump in 1/2” increments as a rule. Always check, by measuring the paper pattern, once enlarged, the circumstances you will end up with and then add ‘ease’ for movement. I also, might make up a prototype out of scrap fabric. Just front and back to try on.
it's hard work to make it larger and takes much time but most of the results fit wonderful. It took me long time to notice that every seamline has different centimetres or inch from one size to the next or the 2- or 3-next size.
Method one was exactly what my inclination was. I have patterns that are 34 inch bust. I'm a 36. I was thinking about just shrinking down the seam allowance a little bit. The waist, however, is about 4 inches off.
Would you please consider making a part 2 that shows how you place notches and darts when grading this much? Also, are there anything that is done differently to grade a sleeve pattern to match this top? Thanks!
I do realize there is a need to do a more advanced video on resizing. However, my ability to make videos is very limited right now as we are traveling. But I'll see what I can do. Yes, grading a sleeve pattern would be very similar to what is in this video. Thanks so much for your comments!
Thanks so much for this helpful video! I got quite a shock after not dressmaking for quite a while to see id have to re grade my pattern! I’m normally a 16/18 New Zealand Size. But will be making a 24!
Hi, looks easy the way you do it. Have you done the slash and spread the paper pattern. Would that work the same for someone like me that has not done either before. Thanks.🐱
Old Time Patterns thank you for sharing your wisdom with us all! I accidentally bought a baby pattern and forgot my daughter is much larger than her age. This helped me be able to upgrade the 24month (largest size) to a 3T. I did 1/2” instead of a 1/4” (two sizes up) and followed exactly how you did curves depending on the gaps. You’re a genius and this was the easiest way for me to learn. Again, thank you so so so much. 💗💗💗
Thanks so much for subscribing! I never got a chance to make the blouse, since my husband and I started traveling shortly after I made that video. So glad you enjoyed the video!
Hi Old Time Patterns I have a question, do you think I could upgrade a 1950’s vogue pattern in the same manner as you instructed in your video? Btw thank you for this video it does help a great deal. My pattern is Vogue 8503. Thanks a bunch
Thanks so much for that . I have a question . When you buy a multi size pattern they usually have multi sizes where there are darts . Is it not the case when doing your own resizing of a pattern ?
Hello! Thankyou for your video. I actually need to do the opposite of this. I bought some size 14-22 pattern by accident and was wondering if I could resize them downwards to get to size 6-8...? Would the same rules apply? Do you know whether the pattern length between sizes (ie 1/4 inch on the side seams etc) is consistently the same throughout all the sizes? Or does it change drastically from the larger sizes to the smaller ones?
I'm so glad the video was helpful to you! Yes, the same rules apply for sizing down. But going that many sizes down, you probably will need to shorten the pattern up some, and it would be best to take your back measurements to find out how much, and take the difference out just slightly above the waistline (there is usually a mark on the pattern for waistline). Hope this helps! Thanks so much!
I wouldn't recommend mixing pieces together from different patterns, because that has the potential of creating a huge amount of fitting problems. For example, two bodices from two different patterns don't necessarily have the same length of side seam, or the same sleeve opening, since they were both designed to accomplish a different look. Hope this helps. Thanks so much for watching!
It totally depends on the pattern and which pieces. As long as the seam lines match in length, it is doable. This works best if you are just changing style lines. (Neckline, type of sleeve, adding or removing a placket.) It's easy to get confused so I wouldn't recommend for beginner sewers.
The darts get moved outward (for sizing up) or inward (for sizing down) the same amount as you are adding or subtracting from the sides. Thanks so much for watching! So glad you found the video helpful!
That’s exactly the way I’ve been doing things. I’m 22 as well but I’ve never take such a small pattern size to size 22. Do you have to move any bust darts etc when you add so much to the sides? Also, recently I’ve seen people slash down the middle of the pattern to add width to the body and also sleeves, it made me second guess the method I’d been using. Does it matter.?
Yes, bust darts would be moved in the same increments. Slashing down the middle doesn't give a very accurate re-size. Slashing in thirds would be much more accurate, and I hope to do a video about that soon. I hope the video was helpful to you. Thanks so much for watching!
I have a pattern from 1968 one size 14, I cut the pattern out leaving almost an inch extra, I sewed a mock-up and discovered a problem, the armhole was too small. So, I guess I should have increased the armhole. This is difficult when it is only one size.
Without seeing exactly what you did, it is very hard to see where it might have gone wrong. But if you added 1 inch to the ENTIRE pattern, no, that would not work. The increase should only appear on the side, and also extend the shoulder up. Then smaller increases around the front and back of the armhole, but not the bottom of the armhole. Hope this makes sense. Thanks so much for watching!
That's very informative but the thing that is missing is how to reposition the markings for darts and other sewing points, as these things will shift about when the pattern is altered
Going small is just the opposite of what I show in this video. You would be drawing your new lines towards the inside, instead of the outside. Resizing for petite is a bit more complicated. I haven't done a video for that yet.
I've been wearing clothing in a women's 28-30. I've been wanting to sew my own clothing, but my size pattern is difficult to find. I'm losing some weight as I fit into a men's 2x T-shirt. But I prefer sewing my own clothes, they're more economical in the long run. I've been seeing since age 13, and I'm now 67.
A side dart would follow the side seam in or out, and would go up or down the same distance as the shoulder seem. Hope this helps. I'm hoping to revise this video soon with more information. Thank you!
Sleeveless bodices have smaller armholes than bodices with sleeves. Find a pattern for the same fabric (knit vs woven), copy the correct armhole onto tracing paper, and redraw onto the pattern you are revising. Then add the sleeve that goes to the second pattern which matches that armhole. Make sure you use a knit pattern when working with knits.
Thank you for this! As a plus size cosplayer, it's hard to find patterns in our sizes so this was really beneficial to us to finally start creating and sewing again.

Thank you for showing this video. Can you use pieces from one pattern to another pattern?
I wouldn't recommend mixing pieces together from different patterns, because that has the potential of creating a huge amount of fitting problems. For example, two bodices from two different patterns don't necessarily have the same length of side seam, or the same sleeve opening, since they were both designed to accomplish a different look. Hope this helps. Thanks so much for watching!
@@OldTimePatterns Thank you for the feedback.
It totally depends on the pattern and which pieces. As long as the seam lines match in length, it is doable. This works best if you are just changing style lines. (Neckline, type of sleeve, adding or removing a placket.) It's easy to get confused so I wouldn't recommend for beginner sewers.
Thank you for this easy peasy video. I have a question though, how do you move the darts to match the new size?
The darts get moved outward (for sizing up) or inward (for sizing down) the same amount as you are adding or subtracting from the sides. Thanks so much for watching! So glad you found the video helpful!
@@OldTimePatterns Thank you so much! You are the best ❤
@@Sandiegeek Wow! Thank you very much!
I have a 1960s pattern that I need to make bigger,it has a seam across the top of the bust,do I need to add to this seam ,or just leave it as it is?
I'm not quite sure what you are talking about. If you could send a picture to my email, I would be happy to help.
Thanks so much for watching!
would it be necessary to change the dart placement after enlarging the pattern?
Yes, the darts should be moved in or out the same distance as the side seam.
Thanks
You're very welcome!
That's very informative but the thing that is missing is how to reposition the markings for darts and other sewing points, as these things will shift about when the pattern is altered
Yes, I have been told that. I hope to have an updated video out soon. Thanks for your comment.
😮I bought a pattern dress thinking it was a size 4 to 6, and it turned out to be a 16,18,20! How can I resize this to a petite small.
Going small is just the opposite of what I show in this video. You would be drawing your new lines towards the inside, instead of the outside. Resizing for petite is a bit more complicated. I haven't done a video for that yet.
Thank you
You are very welcome! I'm very glad the video was helpful to you!
What do you do with the pleats when you size up.
Not quite sure what you are talking about. If you can send a picture to my email, I would be happy to help.
What if the bust size is ok but only the waist needs to be increased ?
I've been wearing clothing in a women's 28-30. I've been wanting to sew my own clothing, but my size pattern is difficult to find. I'm losing some weight as I fit into a men's 2x T-shirt. But I prefer sewing my own clothes, they're more economical in the long run. I've been seeing since age 13, and I'm now 67.
That's wonderful! I am so glad you found the video helpful! Thanks so much for watching!
Does the dart remain in the same place or is it moved over?
The dart would also be moved. Thanks for watching!
I love vintage patterns but I’m always just a size or two bigger and it kills me
I know what you mean!! So glad you found the video helpful!
How do you adjust the darts?
A side dart would follow the side seam in or out, and would go up or down the same distance as the shoulder seem. Hope this helps. I'm hoping to revise this video soon with more information. Thank you!
So the opposite action to decrease a pattern size?
Absolutely, yes! It works the same way downsizing. Thanks so much for watching!
Did you ever post the second video?
Not yet, but I hope to have some more out soon.
How do u change the armsye to add a sleeve
I haven't done any videos about altering or revising patterns, but hope to do some in the future.
