Auditioned at Juilliard a few weeks ago... Thank you for the tips! They helped me A LOT! Especially thanks to getting in contact with the composers on the video.
I'm currently cleaning up my scores for my prescreening recordings this week, and found this incredibly encouraging! Though I'm terribly nervous, I'm hoping I'll be able to land an audition. I'm incredibly eager to absorb whatever knowledge and advice available to me, regardless of where I end up going. Thanks for this!
Thank you so much for this video and your other video about going to Juilliard. This one especially has made me see it as something that is not so impossible and I feel inspired to work at it.
Oh my God thank you so much for this video!!! I'm actually applying here for a BM in Composition, so this video really helped me gain some confidence and plan out my real portfolio. Hopefully, I get an interview, though, because this is indeed my top/dream school... Otherwise, I think I am ready to go. Wish me luck!
Idk if it’s possible to know so little but also play by ear and somehow get in and build that knowledge with them cuz that would be amazing for me.....it’s my dream school
Hey that's what Hildur Guðnadóttir did, and she's doing really well I think. (for anyone who's curious she did the film score to 'Joker' and the TV show score 'Chernobyl')
Horokyu, I plan on doing one for all the departments!! The only problem is that everyone is so freaking busy. It is hard to get in touch with people once school starts because our schedules are CRAZY! In time, I promise I will get all of that content out there for you! :)
I was in band playing trumpet for seven years and fell in love with music. I wrote many arrangements for marching and jazz band, and even took music theory and scored a perfect 5 on the exam. I started studying more and have decided that composition is definitely my focus. Both Eric Whitacre and John Mackey went to the Juilliard school and they have inspired me. I got to see Whitacre conduct a choir in London and wanted to talk to him so badly but sadly wasn't able to. I'm worried about auditioning thouggh because I've never composed a song. I've arranged some and practiced many exercises but have not written an original song. I met a man in my tiny hometown of Cordele, GA that attended this school a while back and he's going to help me study. I plan on going to a college here for 2 years and studying in the meantime and apply next year. I want to compose mainly for wind ensemble, but I also want to be involved in the American music industry because today it is just terrible. I want to contribute to society and make more people respect music for what it really is- art. I want to start like a cultural movement, revolution, etc.
thank you so much for this video!! i plan on auditioning in december of this year for composition, and this eased a lot of stress!

Thank you so much for this video! For the next two years I will be researching and pursuing my strive to get into Julliard for Composition! I even reached out to Max!
I tried to play around with classical composition before but I haven't been doing anything with it lately cuz of school. But one thing I would like to learn more about is percussion, and I think that would help out a lot. But I'm not sure how I should go about learning it on my own as far as what type of books I should look into.
Great video man! Found your channel yesterday, coincidentally I googled "Juilliard composition audition requirements" and this came up. Excellent video, helpful as I'm interested in this, very insightful. Thanks!
+ThatViolaKid No, thanks to you man! By the way, I inferred this from the video but I wanted to know if by chance you knew with 100% certainty - comp majors don't have an audition, but rather an interview, is this correct?
I really want to go into the composition major of of Juilliard, but I'm from a non-music high school, but I'm pretty familiar with music, music theory, and music composition that I learned from a class in middle school. I'm wondering if that could get me anywhere in Juilliard because I do play instruments, but my top priority is the composition major.
It doesn't matter what kind of high school you go to, or even if you're home schooled. Compose pieces and try to get them recorded by live musicians. (through another high school, an arts school, or local college music program....however you can.) They will not judge you in any way for what school you went to.
Thank you so much for this video. Previously i was extremely stressed about applying to a different school for their composition program. Now after watching this, I am relaxed. THANK YOU i was LITERALLY on the verge of having a break down. 💛
No problem bro I understand, appreciate everything that you've managed to cover so far. Keep it coming man! I've got a question though, do you come across former military at Juilliard? Im currently serving
+Moe Gani Can't say that I have, but I wouldn't say it's not possible. It's probably because military people usually serve out of high school and are a lot older before they decide to go back to school. I went to undergrad at Mercer University and I had class with a veteran :)
This is very informative and gives me a lot of hope. I'm not applying to Juilliard, but I figure that in all top music schools the principle is the same, that the teachers value potential over raw skill. I was afraid that one has to be a pro to get into a school like Juilliard, but apparently this is not the case
watching this 2 years in advance... am currently studying composition at a State University in California... I hope to continue on in New York in about 3 years.
I'm not sure if I can. I'm not sure about the policy that they have about non-disclosure of financial information. If you have questions, you should contact them directly!
Hey, this was pretty amazing. I just want to know how to get into the Playwriting program. I am not good enough yet, just starting and all, but it would be helpful for tips on my four year journey into playwriting.
TVK I realy like your videos. Im from mexico, Im studying violin, my teacher says I have good hands for the viola, good violists here are not very common and lately I started to like the viola, I wanted to ask you: is it worth to learn the viola instead of the violin? do you recomend me to change? all my friends say that they dont like the idea of me playing the viola because they think it is like throwing all my violin work to the trash, but I wanted to know the opinion of someone that know viola well.
+Don Juanito By Strausss The viola is a great instrument! Your violin playing will actually serve you well if you decide to switch! On top of that, if you work hard, you could possibly find a good job as a violist because good violists are indeed rare! I say give it a try! If you don't like it, you can always stick with the violin! What do you have to lose?
thank you so much for answering me! I hope you don't stop uploading videos I want to recomend you: listen to kurt atterberg's 3rd suite for violin, viola and string orchestra, he is one of my favourite composers.
Thanks for this vid. I’m planning on applying. Question: is it worth mentioning that I have innately have very high form of perfect pitch, relative pitch, memorization and can instantly recreate music I hear by ear and in any transposed key? I realize there’s stigma around these innate abilities due to ignorance but they are tools that gets me way ahead and compose very fast and be prolific. But I don’t want to come off like I’m boasting of things that aren’t necessary-like how these abilities are usually received by trained musicians.
I wouldn't really go into that unless they ask. I don't want to come across as offensive when I say this, so please take this with a grain of salt. To musicians, saying that you have perfect pitch is something that would make us say "so what?." In the grand scheme of things, it isn't gonna put you over the edge or anything like that :)
Is there any place to hear these guys' music? (I'd love to study composition at juilliard in the future, and I'm just interested to know all I can about it.)
Hi I play viola too and I'm the section leader for my section in my school chamber orchestra but all I want is to get into a really good music school. I don't even know if I'm that good. I live in la and there's a couple good music schools around here. I'm thinking of attending Cal State Long Beach because their music program is pretty good but should I consider going to Julliard for grad school?
i guess that down sides of classic composition that hard for one play the music them selves. with music style other musical styles you can compose and play it your self.
I got an audition for composition at Juilliard February 28th and Im so nervous i have no idea the type of questions that are going to be asked during the audition.
Hi, I really want to get into juilliard but i dont think i have the level even if i work hours in a day. Can i really get accepted ? And also which piece do you recommend me to play ? (Violin here:) )
+Darcy Wan Anyone can be accepted, Darcy! However, if you aren't sure you're at the right level, try going to another undergraduate school so you can hone your skills, and then audition for graduate school (that's what I did). Check out my "Didn't get into Juilliard" video for more info!! Also, consult your teacher on what music you should prepare. If you go online and view the repertoire requirements, that will give you an idea on the parameters! This is a good idea, because sometimes school don't want to hear you play certain pieces hehe :)
Lacking enough budget to get into Juilliard but I believe my potential is enough to go, Anything to be adviced? I graduated in Bachelor degree in music. Looking for chance to get Juilliard.
I feel a deep need to be part of this
Auditioned at Juilliard a few weeks ago... Thank you for the tips! They helped me A LOT! Especially thanks to getting in contact with the composers on the video.
thank you so much! I was really hopless about applying now I wil definitely try
+brunocoliveira89 That's amazing to hear man!!! Best of luck! I'm so excited for you!
+ThatViolaKid Thanks :) I just messaged the 3 guys and have great expectations :)
PS: thumbs up for the Ravel quartet on the end of the video.
update??
TheRandomGamerDude I ended up coming to Berklee :P
brunocoliveira89 did you apply to Juilliard?

Thanks for watching! You have the PERFECT attitude! If you maintain that state of mind, you WILL succeed--no matter where you go!
Hey,I'm considering many schools right now and your video/chanel is exactly the type of thing music majors need. Thank you !
+Riwal Perchoc It's my pleasure homie! Thanks for watching!!!
Thank you so much for this video and your other video about going to Juilliard. This one especially has made me see it as something that is not so impossible and I feel inspired to work at it.

I'm not sure if i want to go into composition or just play my cello or can I do both.
same, my first priority is composition, but I would also love to study jazz, i love playing my trumpet in my free time
Idk if it’s possible to know so little but also play by ear and somehow get in and build that knowledge with them cuz that would be amazing for me.....it’s my dream school

+ThatViolaKid Ask a tuba player if you can =D
+ThatViolaKid I would really love to see one with masters conducting students! Choral, Wind, Orchestral, anything at all! :)

Can't wait to see the drama department!!

Juilliard Jazz!
+jaydude311 Working on it! Haha
This is exactly the video I needed. Thanks!
I'm glad to hear it!
do you have to audition on your instrument as well? or is it just a portfolio?
Man, those question that was the ones that I had....tks!!
This actually helped a ton.
+Mason Johnston So glad to hear that homie!!! Thanks for watching!
ThatViolaKid Thanks for posting!
Could you do one on the dance department? I'm planning to audition next year and would absolutely love to learn as much as I can!
+xmkg I'll see what I can do :)
can you talk about the tuition and scholarships in Juilliard?
I'm not sure if I can. I'm not sure about the policy that they have about non-disclosure of financial information. If you have questions, you should contact them directly!

Real talk tho, talk to the conducting students :D
Awesome videos!!
+Diego Guerra Hahaha if I can ever find them xD
I’m currently a junior so I have a school year and a summer to prepare! What should I do to prepare myself to be a composition major in college??
Are the ability to play an instrument (piano or any other instruments) mandatory for the music composition candidate?
This was EXTREMELY helpful!!
I love the new intro!! Btw, what/who was the audition for?
+Lance Gulley Thanks buddy! It was for this ensemble called Symphony in C

What if i have zero composition skills, can i audition if i write something?
Sure! No one is stopping you!

Hi.
Do composition majors have to audition on an instrument as well?
Hi guys, I want to apply for the composition major in Julliard. I want to know if they ask also for a video of you playing an instrument ?
i guess that down sides of classic composition that hard for one play the music them selves. with music style other musical styles you can compose and play it your self.
Can you audition as a classical saxophonist at Juilliard or is there only jazz saxophone
+Becca Tank I think you can only audition as a jazz saxophonist. Not entirely sure though! Why don't you check the website? Juilliard.edu
I only saw jazz on the website(bummer)
I want to go to julliard, I have since I was 9. I am about to enter High school, what do I need to focus on
Are more of these coming soon? i would like to see one for the vocal department
I'll see what I can do!
I play multiple instruments and I am wondering how for college auditions go?
"Write good music" WELL THANK YOU.

I got an audition for composition at Juilliard February 28th and Im so nervous i have no idea the type of questions that are going to be asked during the audition.

By the way how expensive is juillard school?
Very loud music while u r speaking
Approximately how many undergraduates are in the program?
Really laughing hilariously while watching this video haha XD
Awww haha I'm glad to hear it!!
