    Hi all, please note that bicycles are not allowed to be riding on some of the trails closer to the city. If you're going to ride Yarra Trails I recommend you start at Chandler Highway and head away from the city - loads of awesome trails out that way

    Hi mate, I'm a beginner looking to improve as an XC rider. Would much of this singletrack be manageable for me? Looks awesome, but I can already see a lot is out of my depth. Is it normal to ride a trial like this a little more slowly? Or is it still a little risky or bad etiquette?
    Great vid.
    Cheers

    Only started riding again a few weeks ago after a few years out with a lower back injury and have ridden the Yarra trail around Heidelberg, I don't live far from there, but planning to checkout the trail around studley park. How much bike traffic is there around that area cos I just want to take it easy and not rush

    • @longandwinding

      Teckha Son not too much, especially if you ride east of the Chandler highway. You could also check out Plenty Gorge. Not as many people out there and if you ride near the water tank the trails are pretty chill.

      Thanks Stephen Verdon - yup I had to give way to many pooches, running groups and walkers. If you want an uninterrupted ride peeps you’re more likely to get it heading east from the Chandler hwy.

    Mate as a trail runner, I run this all the time, what happens when we coincide? I love that we both love the outdoors, and in happy to share the path when we can, but there really is no room for error here.
    Do you have any thoughts on this?

    • @longandwinding
      @longandwinding  4 года назад

      Hi Nicholas, I can’t speak for the mtb community but to me a collision would be pretty unlikely. When I’m riding these trails I’m hyper aware of what’s coming up on the trail and my only advice to folks who share the trail is to be equally as aware. Runners have the advantage of potentially being able to hear us coming so I wouldn’t wear headphones if I was running on the trail. At the end of the day if you choose to run on the trail you know the risks.

    • @NicholasTierney
      @NicholasTierney 4 года назад

      @@longandwinding Hi there! Thanks for replying.
      I checked the other day, and there's actually two signs, one near the bridge, and one at studley park that say "no bicycles", and "walkers only" - it seems that the path is specifically not intended for mountain bike riders - so I don't think I really follow that "I know the risks" if I choose to run the trail?
      I don't run with headphones on. It seems that if a collision did happen, that this isn't exactly a risk that I should anticipate, right?
      Given the signage about no bicycles on that section of the track (past the bridge it's totally fine though, tons of room to move).
      I'd love to work out a way for both folks to share the trail, maybe we can apply for funding to expand the path - it is so beautiful, and I think we're there for the same reasons. At the end of the day I would just hate to have caused some poor mountain biker to hurt themselves because they are riding on the walking track.

    • @NicholasTierney
      @NicholasTierney 4 года назад

      At the end of the day I want everyone to get out and enjoy themselves as much as they outdoors, but I also want everyone to come home safe.

    • @MrCDR1
      @MrCDR1 4 года назад +1

      @@NicholasTierney I have to agree with you on that Nicholas. As a keen mountain biker for nearly 30 years and having ridden all of those trails there 100's of times long before any signage. "No Bicycles" means exactly that!
      I was disappointed when the no bikes signs appeared but had to accept it. You will be fined by the ranger if you are caught riding on those trails. Apart from the fine it gives all riders a bad name if a few mess it up for everyone.
      Places like Lysterfield and many more exist for a good reason, you can ride plenty of trails out there and not have to think about, dogs, walkers and runners appearing on the next corner, they are dedicated trails just for riders. As much as I love the proximity of the Yarra Trails and the scenery, best to stick to the rules for the benefit of all.

    • @NicholasTierney
      @NicholasTierney 4 года назад

      @@MrCDR1 Thanks, Craig!
      I appreciate your response, it's great to see that there are mountain bikers out there who care about this. Looking back on @Long and Winding 's response, it is actually pretty disappointing to see that they view runners, running on a trail not intended for bicycles to be "knowing the risks" of bicycles coming through.
      I would like to give Long and Winding the benefit of the doubt, perhaps they just don't know that bicycles aren't allowed. But it's hard to imagine that, since they have to step over barriers to get onto a few of these trails.
