  • No throaty growl. No long hood. The all-electric I-Pace is a shocking departure from Jaguar. Could it be the best vehicle the brand has ever made? Tom Voelk travels to Portugal to drive it on road, off road, and on the Algarve Portimaõ Circuit (and never once worries about range).
    Jaguar provided running footage, travel, and accommodations for this story.

    Great review Tom, the camera views are perfect; doesn't it's shape reminds you of the first gen Acura Integra, that rear quarter brings me back memories of it; btw "cab forward design" something I haven't heard since the prodigious LH's Cars from the 90s Chrysler design era; great Jaguar!!!

      Um, cab forward is the Model 3, best example. The headroom of a huge sedan but the cabin is dead-center of the wheels. Old term, finally done accurately by Tesla. Jaguar is trying to adopt Tesla's attributes and design as their own (like "instant torque"). I get it, they need to sell the vehicle they's invested so much in.

    Good review! Note that the 12.5 hours "home charge" time is based on using a 32 AMP 7.4 kW type-2 plug. Charging this on a regular 10A 240v plug would take up to 38 hours for a full charge. In the US you could double this for 110v using the same AMP.

      There is the Bollinger B1 but its body design is not aerodynamic and the battery pack is too low capacity. They are a small company limited by access to recourses and expertise. But the concept of a Torquey Electric Rover is soo badass.

      By 2025 they will be. China has already made it law. All new cars will have to be electric by then. Several car companies have already stated that since their biggest customer is demanding full electric vehicles then they will invest in BEVs 100%. Someone had to do it. The Chinese did it.

    • @justsomeguy934
      @justsomeguy934 6 лет назад +1

      Reliability based on what? If you looking for Jaguar's historical reliability performance, I have dozens of jokes I can tell you. Let's let them make a few and see the warranty before we make any judgments. Benchmark: Model X and Model S warranty is 8 years, unlimited miles.

    • @Richie5903
      @Richie5903 6 лет назад

      8 year 100k on the battery 3 year unlimited miles on the car .. Tesla in the uk 8 year unlimited on the battery and 4 years on the car. I think Jaguar are being completely fair and realistic , where I think tesla are being a little naive backing the battery with a warranty like that. Good for the customer , not so much for the company. The i-pace has already had 1.5 million test miles done and will be in customers hands at the start of the summer.

    Great review! Comprehensive and thoughtful. Good looking car and nice performance spec's - just a pity about the lack of boot (trunk) space. Jag's engineers seem to have made the very same mistake here as they did with the F Type sports car (miserable boot with no space for golf clubs). Huge error considering the target audience for both cars!!! Hopefully, slower than forecast sales for the F-Type will focus Jag's management team on a solution and a larger boot will be included in the Gen II car.

    This puts the Model X to shame and for less money. It should have a range of at least 300 miles. I think all high-end electrics should meet that threshold, but otherwise an excellent debut from Jaguar. And excellent review Tom, as always!

    But in reality this is not a competitor for the X. More like for the model 3 as it is really small.

      Remember the 2014 Rav4 EV with Tesla batteries? It's just not profitable for them. Last April 2018, Jack Hollis, VP of Toyota North America, basically said "the market doesn't justify the expense." Even the Rav4 hybrid has sold only 2,600 units since 2015, while the regular Rav4 sells about 400,000 units annually in the U.S.

      You just named the car companies whose future is in doubt. They waited too long doing only what they know (read: GM, Ford, Kodak, Blockbuster, etc.) and now they are way behind the inevitable switch to EVs. I'd sell your stock of those two companies...

    • @cadsux
      @cadsux 6 лет назад +2

      In 2017, total EV & PHEV sales of all brands in the U.S. were 200,000 units, with Tesla accounting for 50,000 of those sales. While 50,000 nearly rivals Porsche's total sales, Toyota sold 2.1 million cars (over 109,000 are Prius); Honda sold 1.5 million cars (less 3000 hybrids), so their future is just fine. I would agree that GM & FCA's future is in doubt, since they were bailed out before.

    Hi Tom, great review, thank you. I have one on order and looking forward to delivery. Quick question - You mention that Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are supported, however, it was my understanding that JLR have yet to integrate these features across their product lines. Are you able to confirm this position especially on the I-Pace? Thanks Andy

    • @DrivenCarReviews

      The cars we drove did not have it. We were told by JLR staff that both would be added to the system by the time cars were delivered in the US. If you're basing a buying decision on this, by all means make sure before driving off the lot.

      Feel free to post your experience once you get the car Andy. Always nice to get an owner's experience on a new model like this.

    Looks like a nice car. And Portugal is a fun country. But no Costco (one outside of Paris)

    I love the interior dashboard and screen fitting, and the exterior is slick😍; this car will really screw Tesla! Only thing I think this car needs is larger screen, and the ability to use the screen like a smart phone or additional mobile computer!

    This review was fun to watch. Seeing Tesla progress from S-X-3 and the looming Y, Jaguar skipped straight to CUV which was a smart move. We shall see how it fares againt Y. We already know Tesla will try to finish Autopilot for it, so that could be one major advantage. Still, the iPace is a sick car you can have right now. I want one, thanks to this video.

    There should be a sound option to make it sound like the Jetson's spaceship.

    12:20 - psst: those "extra laps" were planned from the very start. Its made in that way, so you will feel special. ;)
    Nonetheless, I hope Jaguar will overcome the battery availability issue, I really do, I'd like to see more of their cars like this one.

      Ya think? Really, it's a way to move the story along and to show what the car can do. And I agree, I would like to see Jag getting as many out as possible. Hoping to see them in the wild soon.

      Really? So tell me the Jaguar model that will sell for $40,000. It would be smaller in size (like the Model 3), have fewer luxury features (like the Model 3) and have a different warranty (like the Model 3).
