Creggan Troubles Tour

- Filmed by Gavin Patton for his revolutionaryderry.com website, Historian Seamus Breslin gives a blow by blow account of the struggles the people of Creggan estate had to rise above during the 1960s,70s/80s.
Creggan is actually a very peaceful place to live now, the houses are well kept and the kids for the most part well behaved, there’s not much antisocial behaviour or crime .
I lived in it years ago and witnessed the most violent years. It might sound crazy to an outsider but there wouldn’t have been any violence in Creggan if the police and British Army stayed out of the area. The area had their own “ police force” and petty crime , drug dealing and criminal assaults were very rare .
Derry people by nature are welcoming , kind hearted and laid back but just don’t come into their city disrespecting them or thinking you’re any better or you’ll see the other side of their character very quickly , that’s why the Troubles kicked off in 1969 when thousands of Orangemen from all parts of Northern Ireland and Scotland would parade in Derry every year to commemorate ancient victories over the native population. The Derry people weren’t having it anymore and the ensuing violence spread quickly to Belfast and throughout the country . Derry is much more peaceful but still economically disadvantaged by lack of government investment despite having a highly educated young population.
Being one of the most beautiful cities on the island of Ireland it’s definitely a fantastic place to visit, full of interesting history, great restaurants and hotels and Inishowen , the most scenic part of the north of Ireland is in Derry’s natural hinterland .
Spot on!
On this video 32.42 my old home balbane pass number 10 brings back so many memories, left home 32 years ago , wish I was back home in Derry
We're you put out ?

Pretty surreal. Very articulate guy. Well done 👍
Brought back many memories, so pleased it looks so peaceful now. I loved the views from the top of the hill. Well done Seamus & Gavin👏👌🙌
Liverpool here love the place mate walk about the like that
I grew up at the tail end of the no go areas and remember the “we don’t need them” attitude as we policed ourselves
I don't understand how any community can police themselves
Great 👍 video hello from Paul in Dublin 🇮🇪
Audio could do with a bit of volume adjustment
My great uncle would off been the milkman for many many years in Derry Dan pinta Quigley
Me and my friends tryed to steal milk out of his van once and we got covered in grease and paint lol he slapped it on the sides and back of the van.
@@lothburke2243 😂😂😂
Never attempted it again 👀🤣
would love to do this walk
Great video seamus
That was pretty brief on Martin McGuinness’s grave at the end. Does the presenter have some animosity in regard to McGuinness at all ? It’s a genuine question.
Nought like Vietnam 😫 Different conflict.
I'm a Catholic Mancunian, never been to Ireland. I have a question, why wear an orange top, is it making a statement or do you support Netherlands f.c
Brian Doherty it's a Derry city FC it red top
That's a red top Brian. It's a Derry City Football club jacket.
Do Netherlands own the colour orange or something Brian? Are Oranges Dutch?
What’s Catholicism got to do with it really? Just because the wannabe Brits use it doesn’t make it exclusive to them. Orange is in the Irish flag after all. And the green represents Gaelic not Catholicism that’s a later propaganda add on
You are a Proper dope
Good intel......
Good watch bud
I'm sure that tour will be balanced and unbiased .not 🤔
Very interesting. This guy knows a lot about the local history. However, the video would have been better if you showed more of the monuments and less of the guide. Try to show the monuments while the guide is talking.
There is nothing like an independent, impartial, unbiased and truthful account of history and this is nothing like an impartial, unbiased and fair account. It is however, a great tribute to the UK that such bitter people as this are paraded before us as worthy of admiration. This guy has thrown his life away on bitterness and violence. Its sad and he is to be pitied really.
Can you point out where he is based? Just because you don't like the area, the history of the area and how he is telling it doesn't mean he is biased.
You don’t know sh1t
Dear oh Dear , Hand to Hand combat lol 😆🤦🏽
What year was this filmed?
2019
So the logo is a petrol bomb?
Yep. Nowt wrong with that.
They like to destroy the British buildings they live in.
Ulster Scots Man you like to tell Irish people to move to Ireland with your Irish accent in Ireland. Naw hi your bredesh so yee are ain’tchee?!

Grannies house 59 circular Rd
stab the rasher You shouldn’t put her actual address for everyone to see lol
My mum used to live in 51 Circular Rd from 1966-1976
stab the rasher my grannies house was 71 circular road 69 79.
Ringo Chocostarr why .? Any harm came they wouldn’t get out the Creggan alive..
Isn’t time all the memorials, murals and flags were taken down, it’s like we aren’t allowed to move on here and put the past behind us. It’s like a small section of people on both sides have to keep constantly reminding people everyone.
Mac 78 ridiculous comment. Those murals are there for a reason, the men and women who sacrificed their lives for freedom will be with us for the rest of our days. Our fight will never end.
History is there so we dont repeat it.
We will take them down once Ireland is united 🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪
Dumb dumb dumb dumb! You’re the kind of Person to whine that people keep dredging up the past then whines when you fuck up the place with your lack o knowledge when you get out to vote
I don’t think they should get rid of the Murals. History isn’t just in books.
Would have loved to watch all of this but I havent a clue what he is saying and the subtitles are even worse 🤦♂️
Very good I will be going to Londonderry when the weather gets better and maybe take in this tour .
Before you go , you would be better off to learn to call Derry by its correct name , you Knob-end

Charlie, at 10 minutes 47 seconds you make a comment about a British Centurion tank "fighting the Russian's".With all respect its a slightly insular and naive comment. While Britain and its army might be a big player in the north of Ireland, once you mention Russia you are in a different world. In 1972 when Britain launched Operation Motorman, the Soviet Union had over 1 million men in Europe. It had over 50 000 tanks. There would have been no British forces fighting the Russians. If they would have attacked in a non nuclear fashion, the British army would have lasted 5 minutes.Russia is an enourmous military power as we still see today.Indeed the Nato forces have already said they will not intervene if Russia moves on Ukraine.Britain may have been the tough guy in Creggan in 1972 ,however when faced with a real power, the tough guy act fades quicker than ice cream in the sun.
Central Drive, lad shot at us. A guy we nicknamed “mints”. Surname Murray. I shot back, in the opposite direction😀 Hit Cromore flats.😫 Piggery ridge a one star hotel😨 Surrounded by piss stained sandbags.
