I suspect that UP under estimated the popularity of Big Boy. When it came to Tucson the crowd was so large there was no parking anywhere close to the display and from what I see on You Tube It is the same extremely popular.
Had to backup to the line that runs to Cheyenne, Because at Utah junction where it sat over night. It was headed for the Moffat Tunnel, check a map of the denver rail lines at utah junction is at I76 & pecos to get an idea and the line to cheyenne starts about I70 and York
I know that UP had those cars in the 50's and 60's and used them in specials, I was asking about the passenger car with painted or blacked windows which looks like a dome coach. It was in the 1404 consist.
Many replies to many questions....But no one has explained why the need to shovel clear the crossing tracks. Could a nice rail fan please elaborate on this ? Thanx
@@SkipW I had thought that...But then said no way it could affect something weighing as much as a locomotive...Guess you have the whole train to consider though. Still kind of surprising ! Thanks for your info.
@@garyjohnson1392 there is a yt video by baskibill productions where a locomotive makes 3 attempts to go over a ice crusted crossing and you can see the wheels rise above the ice in its first attempt.
THEY HAVE TO USE Y SHAPED COMBINATIONS OF TRACKAGE AND SWITCHES TO REVERSE THE WHOLE TRAIN CONSIST! THE LOCOMOTIVE WAS HEADED SOUTH BUT HAD TO BE TURNED TO HEAD NORTH TO CHEYENNE! THIS CAN ALSO BE DONE WITH A LOOP TRACK WITHOUT THE BACK UP PART!
Jim King I HAVE HAD CELL PHONES SINCE JUNE 1995 WITH VERY SMALL KEYBOARDS AND VERY SMALL SCREENS! I USE ALL CAPS TO BETTER SEE AND CORRECT WHAT I SEND ON TEXT!
That branch that they had to back up on to reach the line to Cheyenne must not get much traffic. Otherwise they wouldn't have had to dig all of the packed snow and ice out of the flangeways at the street crossing.
It seems cell phone photos & videos are the best LOL Wait, I think I saw one person with a real camera. Why does 4014 have hoppers in the consist? Thanks for sharing!
The hoppers are empty and were added to give more braking to the consist. When they moved the locomotive from West Colton to Cheyenne for the rebuild, they had a string of intermodal trailer flats behind it.
@@melissasueh. I know trains and that just seems odd. Why add more weight to the train if you need more braking? Makes no sense. Also when it went back east it had 2 engines pulling it and it had only had 5 cars and 6 empty trailers. I've seen 2 engines handle an intermodal train.
@@daveskritterkingdom those are empty cars they add for braking, my guess is that the 500 ton locomotive does not stop as well as 3 diesel locomotives tied together---just remember, this is a very long shakedown run , the diesel is there mainly for its dynamic brakes, and for reversing 4014 for long distances. its secondary purpose is for backup in case 4014 fails on the mainline,to limp the train off the mainline if necessary.
You guys are braver than I am to film the Big Boy on that extremely cold and miserable day! Glad I got to see it.
Hopefully they can come up with an extended tour plan for next year. In the meanwhile Big Boy deserves a long winter nap.
and maybe next year it can work with a rotary clearing snow over donner pass--yes i know its a SP route, but what an event!!!!
4014 running and working the tracks that's what it was meant to do good old American made iron don't get know better thanks for your videos
Nice to see that she is back at work again!
Man that whistle does say it all ( l am back and ready to go ) beautiful train

The sound of that whistle... love it!
Steam in snow is the best possible thing.
Need someone to take pictures in the style of O. Winston Link.
I hope one day see that beast in person im from Argentina
Thanks for posting this great footage of the UP Big Boy!
That whistle has the sound of authority.
Using the big boy to move grain hoppers??? Wow that 20-20 plan is really working out for them.
@Buddy R. a special customer having a special delivery of his new hoppers.
Love the 9-foot bridge at the end!
hi E G...

9 foot height bridge is a NOT safety...
might be accident crash with a large vehicle...
best safety bridge is 13 foot to15 foot
Really great to see!!💪

i wanna see 4014 push a plow special.
what are the covered hoppers for?
For more braking power. More wheels on the steel.
@@you99tubejimking That and I suspect there is a photo op aspect. UP spares no expense on the show and people like to see a train pulling cars.
@@Ravenscaller my theory was some lucky customer's covered hoppers were being personally delivered by 4014.

There is what looks like a vista dome car with covers over the windows. What is this car used for???
UP had dome coaches, dome lounges, and dome diners, all for nice views

Is Big boy pulling real cargo now?
Only on occasion, basically on ferry moves, it's to save wear and tear on the locomotive's brakes
I work on trains O gauge Marx little bit smaller but American made
Where is the permeant location for big boy. Cheyenne ??
Yes Cheyenne

ice is packed so hard in the groove at the crossings it could lift the wheel off of the flange and lose contact with the rail and derail
