For anyone wondering about the future for the challenger, 3985 is going to be restored back to operating condition by the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America along with 5511
Beautiful audio I’m literally almost in tears listening to her build up speed. Such a magnificent machine. I hope one day she will get that highball once again. Truly my favorite of all the restored steam engines. Thanks for posting!
I saw 3985 as the Clinchfield in Louisville back in the 90's. Only time I ever got to see an articulated in steam. Wish it was going to run again! Thought they had another challenger in the Up shops surprised they can't repair 3985 but I guess only so much coin to go around the Steam program.
GREAT VIDEO ! From a 74 year old. I remember when steam engines ran every day hauling freight and pulling passenger trains. My dad retired from the Baltimore and Ohio.
@@Scorp111786 yep! So excited to see it. Maybe they'll do what I always hoped for and use 6936 as dynamic brakes and backup power for the Challenger. If they have to drag a diesel around, it might as well be a cool one!
She’s got a whistle that echoes like the ghost train but she’s a magnificent side no matter what and when she gets fully restored she’ll be just like she was when she was restored a long time ago roaring down the main line.
Let me be clear about something, Ed Dickens said before the 3985 will not mechanized for the 4014. There are some similarities but he said that the parts are different
I remember my childhood, I am an engineer, these machines are some sort of beings they can talk to you, yes, their efficiency is 2% or less, yes, they make a lot of CO2, plants need to eat too, they're more than a machine, they're a beautiful memory. They should be allowed to exist.
Do you think 3985 would be cosmetically restored for display? Maybe 3985 should be swapped with a GTEL in Ogden, Utah! I think Union Pacific should reaquire a Gas-Turbine Locomotive!
@@beansdamager6610 I understand that. I think I understand the question. I already came to terms with her retirement. She was operated for nearly three decades which I'm grateful for.
Retired, whatever that means, hope they haven't parted her out or sent to scrap. Too expensive to build a new boiler for her? Unsafe? I'd love to see her run, this time not too historically correct but updated and improved! Welded boiler, oil burner, carbon fiber drive rods, computer wheel optimization, roller bearings everywhere, etc. Such that it would still mostly look the same but run even faster, smoother.
Man that whistle just give you goosebumps. Old mans memories that brought flooding back.
Same here it makes me so happy it’s like something from the past
For anyone wondering about the future for the challenger, 3985 is going to be restored back to operating condition by the Railroading Heritage of Midwest America along with 5511
They just got to 6936 Centennial running again and she’s good to go
We will always remember you 3985, for your whistle will still Echo through the high country of Southern Wyoming
You know it's still in the Cheyenne Wyoming round housejust without it's tender which 4014 has
@@rjharmonproductions wrong! It’s currently being restored back to operating condition by the railroad heritage of Midwest America in Silvis Illinois.

Great video shots and sound, hope UP take good care of Challenger, get her fully serviceable again.
Same, I hope we can see Challenger and Big Boy pulling mile longs trains side by side!
@@That_Thicc_Cat unfortunately that's going to take a miracle 3985 running with 4014
@@EngineerDaylight I’ve watched your fastest steam locomotives video, good stuff! Also your reply makes me sad, it would be awesome
@@That_Thicc_Cat I apologize if that sounded a bit too harsh, I wanted to see the 3985 run with 4014 as well. Unfortunately Union Pacific retired it
@@EngineerDaylight hopefully we will be able to see 4014 pull a full length freight train!
She’s amazing hope to see her pull freight like she did back when was was built
@James Ross it would be nice to see that again
Sadly she has been retired. :(
@@RocketStephen618 i hear they are restoring/rebuilding her.
@@aver4ge_gam3r37 That was sadly just a rumor, the Union Pacific Announced that 3985 will be officially retired last year in the Steam club
That’s not the case anymore 3985, 5511, 6936, and several pieces of rolling stock are soon to be moved to Illinois for restoration

UP 3985 is nothing but beauty and power!
Now it is officially retired, never to run and maybe never see!

GREAT VIDEO ! From a 74 year old. I remember when steam engines ran every day hauling freight and pulling passenger trains. My dad retired from the Baltimore and Ohio.
THE VERY interesting part is, thus Engine has MORE PULLING POWER, than Two Diesel Engines working together one behind the other.
I really hope you get her back under steam. I saw her years ago and I would love to see her on the high iron again.
Unfortunately, even though I'm sure Ed wants to, I don't think the railroad will let them.
We’ll, You’re in luck. 3985, 5511 and 6936 are going to the shops in Silvia, IL to become Operational again They are shipping out soon

I love these old steam locomotives.
Still shining in her final hours of glory.
As long as "retired" doesn't mean "scrapped" ! Thanks for sharing, was wondering what happened to this one.
Your videos are awesome, well done. Your videos put the railroad back in steam videos.
She is such a beauty. Hope to see her on the high iron soon. ❤️
About that.....UP officially retired 3985
@@Moltar_Railfan yes, unfortunately you are right. But hope is a wonderful thing and maybe a way is found to make her up and running
@@Moltar_Railfan noooo
@@Moltar_Railfan at least we have big boy and 844
@@That_Thicc_Cat not to worry. 3985 is being restored back to operation as we speak. But it’s in Silvis Illinois.
Can’t wait for her to return to steam soon

She’s got a whistle that echoes like the ghost train but she’s a magnificent side no matter what and when she gets fully restored she’ll be just like she was when she was restored a long time ago roaring down the main line.
OMG! These steamers are so bloody gorgeous.
Beautiful old beast, but you can feel how tired he is. Its joyful to see him able to give it his all one last time.
3985 begins her 2nd career as an excursion locomotive in 1981 and she continues on the excursions all the way until 2010.
3985 always put on a better show than big boy ! Every time you see a clip of 4014 its uneventful and barely under throttle
Thanks for sharing. Happy Thanksgiving!
i love this engine. she is my favourite.
