    Great video, great tips! I will try your settings Greg next time I am out shooting on the street. LOVE my new Rebel T5 and have been shooting video on a Canon Vixia HV40 for a long time.

    Nice choice of the subject : skate boarders, old places and the usual... I've got a recent EOS 800D and there's a lot to explore with manual although I left photography years behind my old AL-1 QF 35mm and now I definitely need to update the manual skills like: aperture and shutter speed

    Does anyone have experience with handheld night street photography? I would like to know what is the best setting of "Picture style". To shoot in default "Standard" or "Neutral" or to try experiment with sharpness and contrast in user defined picture style?

    Can't you shoot in any picture mode and still get B/W images in post processing?? I don't find the B.W pic mode to really be B/W as one would desire. Very nice video by the way.

    • @Francis_A.321
      @Francis_A.321 5 лет назад

      Yes you can. But you can have better results in RAW. Just change the white balance and it's just like you shot in BnW.

    If hes shooting in b&w does it mean he shoot jpeg rather then raw ? I personaly always shoot in raw and images that fit better in b&w i make b&w. Would never shoot in b&w if you can even do that in raw,. never tried :)

    • @PreveenRodrigo
      @PreveenRodrigo 9 лет назад +2

      +TheElsingo You can switch picture styles to B&W and shoot raw. Pic will show up B&W on your camera preview. However the colour data is there if you want it when you post process.

    • @thadgan
      @thadgan 9 лет назад +1

      +TheElsingo Sometimes, you go around with live view on black and white picture style to know how he contrasting lines works on your frame. At some places in real live does not look interesting with colour, but the moment you see it in bw, its a must have pic. But shoot in RAW + JPEG in case you need to have colour back.

      If you shoot in RAW with Canon's the image will still be in color when you download it. It can be useful to change the in-camera setting to b&w to have a good idea if the shot works in b&w.

    • @Downforce264
      @Downforce264 8 лет назад +3

      I would just go with color and edit it to black and white if it fits the image better, so you still have the option.

      +mustafa sadikot They're all in public places, according to law it wouldn't be.

    • @AlexJacksonSmith
      @AlexJacksonSmith 7 лет назад

      mufasaworld - Yes and no... the answer depends on the country. In Germany many of these pictures are an invasion of privacy; clear and simple. In the UK or USA such pictures are in a public space and people have no right to privacy. The respect towards the person being photographed can be ignored and the person can be shown in a very embarrassing or derogatory way. I don't like this disrespect so I concentrate on silhouettes and people in as non personal way as possible. This still makes for good composition, but avoids discomforting someone, which is important to me. Alex.,

      @@AlexJacksonSmith Sadly this is what will eventually kill street photography as we know it. You would never see winograd spending a day taking pictures of shadows!.. nor would Bresson or Weegee, but more and more I see street pics that look post apocalyptic, there are buildings but no people. It was not so long ago that it was general consensus that street REQUIRED a person in the frame. And while I understand that things change, the concept of street showing the human condition seems to somehow REQUIRE a human somewhere. As for peoples privacy, it seems that the only entities that are not forced to live with those rules are the governments themselves, as it is incredible how many times ones image is recorded per mile in most city centers. Regardless, good initiation video for many folks out there. I do so much love all the work and effort that the Australian Canon group puts into their training videos. You guys do rock hard!

    • @AlexJacksonSmith
      @AlexJacksonSmith 5 лет назад

      Randy Boback, not sure that it will kill it. As for Henri Cartier-Bresson, his man jumping the water from a plank and the cyclist in the street from above with the staircase are not in your face and silhouette. I think there is scope for images but it requires a more discerning eye. I think a person in the frame is important for most street, without it is more urban photography. As for what the person is, I think that they are not the subject, but more the organic context and scale to a public space. But that is just my view. A.,
