Very concise and extremely helpful to any person using a Canon EOS Camera for the first time. Clearly Explains the basics of using the different settings and use of the mode dial. Brilliant Tutorials.
@Jrconley1 Thanks for your question. With the newer cameras like your EOS 60D, there is a Depth-of-Field Preview button adjacent to the lens mount. You can now concentrate on how your photograph would like like by pressing this button and not worry about calculations anymore. Hope this helps. Many thanks, the Canon team.
This is great! I took Digital Photography my Sophmore year in high school and I never really understood the concept. This has helped me alot. :) This will help me alot starting out in college. I'm going for photography.
i love you.... i get the whole depth field now..... omg am going crazy taking pictures and i did my sister's daughters first birthday and i use deep depth field all the time and the photos came out great but when it came to taking pictures by herself and with groups i use shallow depth field and its good if you use ur aperture value . it helps you learn to remember whats works with aperture and shutter speed together
It's a shame canon don't use this guy for the free DVD they give away in the UK. He's clearly spoken and explains things in a very easy way. Thanks Canon Aus!
bro i like the simple way of explaining I've just bought my Canon DSLR 500D and your videos helping me in so much better way now i am using the AV Mode which i never use it. thanks a lot..
EXCELENT TEACHER!!! THIS GUY EXPLAIN SIMPLE AND SUPER CLEAR!!!!! I HOPE HE MAKE MORE TUTORIALS LIKE THIS. THE OTHERS GUY IN THIS SERIES SPEAK TOO FAST TOO UNDERSTAND, LIKE Graham Monro OR Chris McLennan I CAN'T UNDERSTAND WHEN SPEAK ABOUT THE LENS ARE USING. BUT THIS GUYS ( CHRIS BRAY) IS EASY TO UNDERSTAND!!!! I WAITING FOR MORE TUTORIALS FROM THIS GUY!!!!
Hey man your video helped me alot. i bought a canon rebel t2i 3days ago and still trying to figure out how to use the Aperture, shutter speed and ISO.like i said early on your video help people who are new on this field of photography. i have a canon 60 d with a 18mm to 135mm lens. what happened to the depth of field distances that were on the old style lenses. it was easy to read the distance from the subject to the lens? I love my new camera but there is no way to determine the dof I guess unless you somehow memorize the f stops.
hi there, my question is that if u were to use a small aperture to achieve a sharp picture, in order to do that i got to use a rather slow shutter speed to capture a sharp picture - which may results in blur image if i do not use a tripod. is there any way of not blurring the image without using a tripod, especially for a fashion shoot?
Hi there - our best advice is to practice, practice, practice. Photographers take years to perfect manual focus so do continue to master it! Let us know how you go. Cheers.
@1144chico Hi there, there are various ways to adjust the shutter speed on the Canon EOS 600D. Please consult your manual for more detailed information. Many thanks, the Canon team.
There is something I don't understand. There is an aperture setting on the camera yet you can adjust the aperture on the lenses themselves right? How does the setting on the camera translate to the baldes on the lenses? I'm considering getting a 550D but just want to understand everything before hand.
Thanks for your comment - feel free to visit any of our authorised Canon resellers and have a play with the lenses in-store. Let us know how you go. Cheers, the Canon team.
Hello. I have canon sx100is I've tried so much and hard to shoot one photo with shallow depth of field but came up with nothing! Do you have any suggestions for me please?
Hi do you know how to get the sky and the foreground in focus at the same time? I know you can do this with 3 shots but is it possible to achieve a balanced photo?
Hey there I have been an off and on photographer for years so watching some of these tutorials on some of the basics again is just fantastic. Cements the knowledge in your head for when you come to a situation and remember back "hey I know what to do here". Keep these up I can't get enough. Thanks.
hi i got a e50 1100d canon camera with a 70-300mm maco lens im still learning to use it but so far i am happy with the pictures i have taken so far by watching these videos have helped me alot ty
Hi I have the canon rebel sl1 and not sure how to use it that well for small objects jewelry and other things. Do I need to buy a new "macro lens" or can I use what I have? Thank you!
Thank you do much. There are very few things that confuse me but those f numbers have really messed with my brain. Now those eggs really did put my brain back on track. x
So I got an m50 last week and when I get it how I want it to look soon as I click to take a still it doesn't work. It seems to lose the depth of field but taking it as a video works just fine. Any advice?
Very helpful! Can someone help!!?? I cant go lower than an F4 depth of feild on my canon EOS. Is there a lens I can buy to give me that effect or should I have to get another cam? Thanks!!
@canonanz I'm very confused. Earlier in the video (around 1.03 min) you said "Smaller aperture like F/2 or 2.8 make a larger diameter of the opening and the shallower the depth of field" but then later (1.26 min) you showed the flower and stated "that it used a shallow depth of field, a large aperture" and then said "Such as f/2.8" I do not understand how this makes sense. You had earlier said that small aperture was small numbers but then went on and said large aperture and used small numbers again. Can you please explain this to me?
I need help from this group to create a high definition image of a small bouquet of flowers from a small shrub using the Canon EOS Rebel 3Ti. I am an amateur in photography. Which setting should I use? In addition to building the configuration, should I also position the close-up mode? Thank you for any help!
Sugata Kundu, I am new to this but you might be confusing yourself. You adjust shutter speed that shows in fractions eg. 1/100 sec and adjust depth of speed with the Letter 'F' eg. F6.3 - F22.
this tutorial is fantastic, how something so confusing can be explained so calm and clear, thanks for the thumb rule!!!

DOF is not just affected by the f-number, but even more by the distance to the subject or the focal length.
johan bauwens
Simple rule. see the difference DOF on same focal length and distance.

Is it the same if you shoot macro on a zoom lense? Rather than macro on a macro lense? Or would it be different
Pretty helpful. Many thanks!
@MiAkount Happy to help! Enjoy.
@defrule Thanks for your question. Here's an answer for you: canon.com/camera-museum/tech/room/emd.html Cheers, the Canon team.

Very helpful! Can someone help!!?? I cant go lower than an F4 depth of feild on my canon EOS. Is there a lens I can buy to give me that effect or should I have to get another cam? Thanks!!
A lot zoom lenses are limited to narrower apertures such as f/3.5. Your lens should display the widest aperture it's capable of on the front.
thank you!! this helped SO much!
Thanks, I'm beginner and this was very helpful ! ;))))
To adress the issue I just got a Lytro Illum last year for $100 all the kit brand new and 3 spare batteries ! THE BEST
