  • Thinking about moving to Belize? Wondering about the cost of living in the country?
Belize is not the cheapest place in Central America. However, most expats can live on much less in Belize than their countries of birth and with a higher quality of life.

I'm a retired expat from USA. I live in Santa Elena, Cayo. I'm single, live alone. I rent a really nice cottage on about 1/4 acre of fenced land. Private and surrounded by lush jungle and flowers. 4 tenths of a mile to the main drag with grocery stores, tons of small mom and pop shops, anything you need. Just incredible. The birds ,butterfly's, lizards, snakes and scary little creepy things they don't mention. All make living here great. Not to forget about the heat here. It gets over 100 sometimes but never gets below 65. I have not run into one local ever with an attitude. Not one. people are so nice here. I live on my SS only. But I live here on less than $1000 USD per month. No BS here. Month after month under $1000. That includes, rent, electric, gas(hot water, cooking),internet, cell phone, water, insurance and gas for my motorcycle. This also includes food for the month. Great healthy meals home cooked. I bought my motorcycle brand new here. A brand new dependable bike here costs about $2500 USD. 100 + mpg. I have no other bills so that's how I live comfortably in Belize under $1000.

I love that my money doubles in the country and they speak English. Which makes communication soooo much easier than the other speaking countries

The fact english is widely spoken is a selling point for me as well. I can make do without a car or ac but I need good high speed internet. I wish this video went a little more into detail on crunching the numbers instead of just "well it depends".

They say Belize is getting more developed, and the prices are going up up up. Will it still be such a great deal in ten years?

Sorry but I learnt nothing form this video we know money is one of the many factors that supports living, but you can give a reasonable range example the average income in Belize is X if one makes X plus Y then they should be in a good position to live ok, but no you said nothing i see that NORTH AMERICAN attitude at play like it is in many developing countries retire here never mind the locals we take the coast push everyone else in the interior of the country, I make this point not to be insulting or disrespectful ,but to make the wider point of people been price out of there own country because a retiree wants to live cheap with income from another country that they can't live on the way they would in Belize and most Belizean people been underpaid cant

We're not sure we understand your point. This video is explicitly geared towards expats from outside of Belize who are curious about the cost of living in Belize. So that's the perspective being discussed. I can tell you that the numerous Belizeans our firm employs do not feel "priced out" of the country.

Depends on your lifestyle is good.
Get to the point, they are .50 on the usd.
Of course you can go to a touristy location and spend 20 bzd on a drink if your an idiot.
Or say get a fan and adapt, then shit on the mainland is half the price. Which is still overpriced.

Where is the appreciation of nuance in these comments? You criticize but in the end say pretty much the same thing: it depends.

Hi, I visited Placencia last Oct and decided to consider retirement in Belize. I will have stable retirement income but not enough to purchase a place with cash. What are some of the challenges with renting?
    Thank you,
    Rick
