Go live in both countries for 90 days before you make a permanent decision.
Middle class earners would do better in Costa Rica because its easier to live in a more stable and safe society. Belize would be a better option for those who are able to afford a more isolated residence because this exclusivity is cheaper in less organized countries.
I went to several countries before making my decision to move to Costa Rica. 5 days in Belize I was ready to leave. Costa Rica is more expensive but it is worth it. Here you can be in one climate and one hour later in a completely different climate. The wildlife is abundant, the fresh food is fresh and the people and the country are much more beautiful and friendly. I just got my residency at the age of 58. At the age of 65 I can get my citizenship.
Did you consider Mexico just out of interest?
@@robster7012 absolutely. Spent maybe 6 months in Mexico. Certain parts were in the running but it is much less free feeling than CR. I just returned from Cabo San Lucas. Considered very safe for Mexico however the military police fully armed are also all over the place. That is not what I want to see where I live. I visit Mexico but after a few days I go home to CR. Do not get me wrong, they all have issues but the more I see going on in the US I think Costa Rica, Belize, Mexico or Columbia over the next few years (maybe forever) will be a much better place to live. The US facade of being a country of laws (A Republic) is quickly becoming a Banana Republic. When the world figures out the US dollar is not stable due to this, the dollar over time will fall to at least an even playing field for the world. Using the dollar as they have, the politicians waisting and stealing dollars from other countries and the US people is coming to light. After 4 years in CR I am going to start my business here very soon.
@@cougarlove8542 Thanks for your reply. Im in the UK and have been considering Mexico. I will take a trip from Mexico to CR. From a stability pov CR makes sense. I work online and can afford Mexico but its a stretch for CR.
@@robster7012 you can live in Costa Rica cheaply. I live in an ocean view gated community that is in an expensive area. It is not necessary. Mexico is more convenient with more to choose from and more like the UK in many ways. Costa Rica is more like old Mexico. Much less developed, roads suck, access to certain things is not possible unless you have it shipped from the US. If you do that, massive taxes on imports. That tax on imports, the VAT tax at 13% is what kills CR for many people. It is also like America that the Costa Ricans are quite lazy especially near the beach. In the US the Mexicans do most of the hard work. In Costa Rica the Nicaraguans are the Mexicans of Costa Rica. Not much would be accomplished building houses or commercial buildings without the Nicaraguans. On the positive side for expats, the labor is very cheap. Good pay is $5 per hour for unskilled labor or home building. The materials however make up for that. All in all I think the cost of living in my area is similar to a nice area of the US.

Thank you for sharing! I moved to and invested in Costa Rica in 2020 and occasionally research other nearby nations. Time and time again I am grateful to learn I made the right choice!
I've been to Belize on multiple occasions and absolutely love the country, the culture, the food and the people! I have not yet visited Costa Rica, but hope to do that soon. Right now Belize is high on my list of future residency. I noticed that you failed to mention their QRP program which is similar to Costa Rica's retirement-residency program but requires a slightly lower monthly income. I also noted that your quoted monthly costs in Belize are in line with the often quoted figures, but in my experience that figure is even inflated. Food is very cheap in Belize - and the majority of my time there has been spent in the most expensive location (Ambergris Caye). The mainland is even cheaper. And the quality of the food there is exceptional. That the most surprising part of my first visit there. I had no expectations on the food, and I was blown away by how good it was.
I loved Belize as well.

Thank you for this information, Belize is at the top of my list with Costa Rica behind it. With the information I found on Belize I was thinking similar as to why some things wasn’t mentioned
After 11 years in Costa Rica I am moving to Belize. I have watched few families leave here past two years for Belize. These families now enjoying Belize more than Costa Rica. Weekly food costs family of four in Belize very close to my costs as single man here at the beaches in Costa Rica. Go figure. Fresh farmers Market from Mennonite in Belize much better than any market in Costa Rica that I experienced.

Yes People can pick and live anytime to anywhere. Is to many expats in Costa Rica and is no the only country you can live. Haiti, Nicaragua, Burundi. Guinea Ecuarorial some where. Just live

The unique thing about Costa Rica is that it actually has a Carribean Region. When I was in Puerto Viejo de Talamanca it felt like I was in Jamaica.

Costa Rica is great! No wars, no military, free university and super low-cost nationalized health care, which covers 100%, even medication, and has been ranked by the U.N. as in the top-20 in the world. People are cool, friendly and real. Great food, music and art scene. Highly-educated workforce. Multi-cultural population. Low violent crime rate. Most people in their 40's or younger speak enough English to get by. The accent is beautiful and easy to understand. I find driving here in the Central Valley metroplex to be even easier than in the States. Cops aren't itching to harrass you for some ridiculous reason, and you just drive smart, prudent, and safe instead of following the letter of the law. It's liberating, TBH. CR isn't perfect, but once you leave the States, you begin realizing just how oppressive it is to live in America and just how screwed-up and backwards the US' war-mongering society and culture is. So glad I left. Been a resident here in paradise, going on 3-years.
What do you mean, "no military" the corrupt government and news media were lying about that in 1990, there was a military then, I asked at a check point to go down a road to the beach, and the military guard said "no, military property". In 1993 I returned, and was regularly stopped by armed military dressed groups, who demanded to search the vehicle. You are spewing out the government lie, get a brain, then some accurate information, and forget the dirty corrupt UN, it is one of the worlds worst evil organisations. Those days the road pigs were out to harass every rental or foreign vehicle, I had to leave, before I totally lost it, and became a serial something.
To talk about only the good does no favors. Costa Rica is beautiful, kind mostly very poor people, the banking is an absolute abomination of customer service, the government medical care is terrible unless you need a trama unit. The regular care is mostly crap. It is much better to pay as you go (it’s cheap) or have an international plan that is also cheap. This way you can go to the good hospitals and urgent care locations instead of being part of the system. The government pays out a massive percentage to government worker retirement plans. Some of which make more retired than working. With that said all government services are a disfuncional mess. Last but not least import taxes are the highest of any country I have been to. Other than food, everything is very expensive. If your coming here in only social security, we’ll most of you will be as poor as you were in the US or Canada on that salary. This place is the Wild West and you will not have good roads, water and electricity are not just expensive but go out all of the time. These are just the facts. Come here, rent for a year and then make your permanent move if after a year you think this place suits you. I have been visiting CR for many years and I have lived here full time for 4 years. One other important notification. Real Estate agents and attorneys are mostly incompetent or scammers. I have bought and sold a few properties in 4 years. One closing was a disaster and I never got paid in full. The buyers attorney filed the deed and it stated that all money had been paid. So now I have to go after the attorney and the notary with a criminal suit. Beware

I live in Costa Rica. It is extremely expensive compared to the USA. Nearly everything is is imported and is tarrifed at 30%-50% including cars.
Also anything you like food is twice the price. Pomegranates are $26 and a restaurant for two like PF Changs is never under $60.
but none of the food has GMO's... LOL

You can live on $200 USD in a Brazilian favela. It will be very cheap. But not necessarily safe. Everything has a price, Costa Rica too ☺

I'm a CR citizen. I think costs are higher than she is stating. Things like cars and all imported products are double what they are in the US. $750 in rent will be pretty a basic 1br in the city, and those monthly budgets are low for a family of 4.
Anything "in a city" is higher. People choose to live the way they like, but seeking a city is probably not the thing most people are looking for when moving to Costa Rica or Belize.
Agreed, we live here and those numbers are off. We made a cost of living video few years ago and it was higher then. We'll be making a new video soon

By the way I heard there's not as much to do in Belize as in Costa Rica.
For example during the rainy every day it rains in escazu or San jose ...but 2 hours away in Jaco it does not rain as much there and you can lose 5 lbs by walking in the 95 degree heat on a 3 day weekend
Never been to Belize, but my take on Costa Rica is it has a Pacific Coast which is very nice and cool. The Carribean side where Belize is tends to be more humid, also there is much more criminal activity on the Carribean side. Also Costa Rica has high mountains that are nice and cool even in August, I don't believe Belize has the same. I would go to Belize for the Carribean reefs.

Healthcare Costs in Costa Rica
The monthly costs of public health insurance in Costa Rica varies dependent on each expat's income. Foreigners can expect to pay anywhere between 7-11% of their monthly income to the C.A.J.A. $60 to $120 depents you Health Conditions you have.

Costa Rica is one of the most expensive countries here in Latin America. Belize has a much better cost of living.

Do you need habla Espanol in Costa Rica?
I traveled for 2 weeks and picked up a lot of Spanish. They speak fairly slowly. Most people in hospitality are conversational in English. Learn 20 sentences of Spanish and you can get what you need from everyone else.
We live here and had zero Spanish knowledge when we did, in a lot of the Costa towns the locals know enough English that you can get by. Check out our channel for more info on Costa Rica

belize is english speaking, cr is spanish speaking. the issue with costa rica its that its expensive and not many choices in tico supermarkets outside of large cities, like pali. roads in CR are awful in some places (worst in central america) belize city is a shithole to avoid like dangriga. roads in belize are ok. in CR san jose and heredia are shitholes as well

I hated Costa Rica. Belize is a much more poor Country, however I can buy land cheaper there and on an Island off the coast as well. I am from Canada as well.

Look at the map. Belize borders Mexico. Only 2 hours by bus from Belize city to Mexican border for health care. Not a big deal. Belize is British Commonwealth and they speak English which is a plus. Belize is only 2 hours by plane to Miami. Belize shares weather like the Mexican Yucatan peninsula which has MANY MANY expats living there.
Not all expats will like Belize, but it has some positives as well. Ecuador is too far away for me. I rather be closer to USA and Mexico.

History wise, Belize was much safer than all of Central America. From Mexico to Panama, they all had some sort of genocide or civil wars and death squads. Costa Rica had a civil war. History wise, Belize had no civil wars.
I am not saying Belize is better than Costa Rica. I am saying history wise Belize was much safer and free of wars or conflicts compared to its neighbors in Central America.

Can’t renounce Costa Rican citizenship
The only reason Costa Rica would not allow someone to renounce is if they had NO other citizenship in the world. You must have another passport, or you can't renounce. You also must state your reason(s) for leaving in writing, and in the realm of possibilities I suppose there could be some things they would reject if you stated them. I have no idea what that would be other than, "I committed a horrible crime. I want to renounce." However, when renouncing U.S. citizenship, you may not state that you don't want to pay taxes anymore as that could likely cause a denial of your renunciation.

If you like blacks Belize. I'm from Costa Rica, you will find varied types of girls, it depends where you live. On the caribean coast black girls, in the central valley diverse latinas. On the pacific coast, it's tanned latinas but you'll find many foreigners as well.

In Costa Rica you can find the typical Latina kind of looking. Belize is more African like Haiti.

We live in Costa Rica and live it, if you're going to move anywhere you need to learn to adapt
Costa Rica is a little bit liveable for western standards.
@@infectedvoice4670 if you live in a Costa Rican City you basically live the Western Standards but obviously as foreigners just go to some hell of a town super far of civilization that no locals even know you lower the standar of living because in the middle class areas of the GAM(greater metropolitan area) you basically live as any person in a good neighborhood in Canada, the US or Europe
