Some of the best fishing in my life was standing right there just off those sod banks. Mornings, evenings, dark of night and mid-days. Blues in the spring with the occasional striper in the mix. Fluke until the bay gets real warm. Schoolies on jigs through the fall. It's a magical place to me. I've had the pleasure to have met Mr. Caris out there and been thoroughly schooled by him and the other regulars. Come mid April and I'll be itching to go give it a try once again.
Had a very similar experience to you this past Spring with back bay blues. Props for giving them the respect they deserve. My first fish in the surf was a blue on Sandy Hook in 1986. I rode my 10-speed down Rt 36 with my rod and tackle box strapped to the back. I still remember when that blue latched on to that Hopkins.
I use a sand spike, especially with a circle hook. They hook themselves. Shell E. on the fish. Enjoyed your video. You didn't edit out the break off kudos. Every fisherman sometimes goofs up. Keep up the entertaining and informative productions.
Would love to see more videos like this that are informative almost like how too while showing local businesses and shore fishing and what to use for said method that's a bit more in depth. Please and thank you.
@8:43 very interesting. Always wondered how stripers actually eat clams given their lack of teeth. And makes even more sense when you consider some of the best fishing days are when the surf is churned up.
You set the hook again on that fish that you lost 😂. I hate circle hooks. Between that and the a lot regs… I’ll only catch stripers now on hard plastic lures. 💯
oh I know. I've only rewatched that clip a hundred or so times, haha. After much reflection and prayer, I realized that with circles, you're better off with a sand spike. Sand spikes never set the hook too soon. - Jimmy
@@OnTheWaterMedia couldn’t tell if it was a battalion or carnage lol. But I did see the frustration on your face as the line popped from whipping the rig to hard on the cast ;) lol
Hi lo rig and $9 clams my ass . You can catch bluefish with bologna sandwich and garden hooks in New Jersey and southern shore of Long Island in September.
Outstanding video of surf fishing! However, the horrible music in the background was terrible! No need for any music at all as the narrator was very informative and interesting. The music was greatly distracting and significantly lowered the quality of an otherwise excellent presentation.
How does this guy have a show? He can’t cast or use a circle hook? Also, like how these guys follow the circle hook rule but litter their tag ends without even a thought, it’s not that hard to put them in your pocket. Then they stick their hands in the bluefish gills… need better examples on tv

Can’t wait for spring. That sun rise running out the inlet beats everything.
Hope there’s more episodes of “From the Surf” in the future!!

Love the "last cast" criteria...but possibly a couple more...lol. Can totally relate to that!

Schoolie stripers and winter flounder on clams was my first surf fishing experience! Sandy hook beach in New Jersey. Good times.
Great Viedeo thanks!!!

Great stuff Jimmie. As always, you guys do some great content.
Thanks @outcastlures
Thank you! Love your pencils! - Jimmy

Nice action!..Nice set-up you have. I cast a "Penn fathom 15cs" yours looks the same
I used to use the string with chicken livers while fresh water striped bass fishing.
Chicken livers are surprisingly effective striper and hybrid striper baits in freshwater.
Had the best Striper Run in years last fall/winter! Let’s do it again! 🎣
GREAT VIDEO Jimmy!!! Hit me up next time your in the area..Im right off the beach in Lavalette with an Axopar in the water ready to GO!!!
Thank you for watching! That'd be fun. I get down to NJ to fish a few times a year. Hoping to get back a couple more times this fall.
would be great if you guys could list the equipment used or links to it.
Another awesome video by Jimmy & OTW!
- What was the rod / reel setup being used for the bait fishing?
Penn Fathom 2 15SCDS “casting special conventional reel with a Penn Batallion surf rod probably 11ft. Nice setup for bait for the surf.
Thank you, and Brendan was right on the reel. The Rod was a Penn Carnage Surf 11'

I miss this kinda of fishing
How did you get the beach all to yourself ??? Lol
Weird seeing places on fish on the TV.
I had that happen a ton of time with blues. Idk why kept losing them
In the 70 and 80's it was mackerel
What was the conventional reel you were using?
Penn Fathom II Casting special
Nice, thanks
time of year/date/water temps?

Whoever this rookie is should not be giving advice
I dislike bluefish!
