  • The 2023 Fall Run got off to an epic start in Monmouth County, New Jersey, with 20- to 40-pound bass feasting on peanut bunker right in the surf.
Jimmy heads to the shore during the last week of October, bouncing around from beach to beach, hoping he doesn’t get there just in time to hear the fisherman’s least favorite sentence: “You shoulda been here yesterday.”
From The Surf is presented by:

“He should have been there yesterday” has been the motto of my fall run as well, so I feel you on that! Still plenty of fish out there to be caught. Just have to keep persevering and hope the reward will follow!

Aint that the truth. Having had a bad case of the "shoulda been here yesterdays", most of October into November, I found the bass on 11/29 and slammed 18 in an hour. Lucky?? Oh yes, but the perseverance paid off FINALLY!! Keep hunting and chucking. Tight lines all!!!

I grew up in Monmouth County, 1 mile from the beach. I never had much luck surf casting. I did have luck jetty fishing. I used to hang all my gear on my bicycle and go from Spring Lake, to Sea Girt to Manasquan. The water looks a lot cleaner and clear than it did when I was a kid.

If you're going to stick with that truck camera angle, can we get a donation pool together to get you some armor all wipes? Like I treat my vehicle as a tool as well, but you know what they say-- the camera adds 10 pounds of disgusting dust and skin cells. Keep up the great content, lad.

Let me start by saying I love OTW. BUT! I have to say I don't like the way this video encourages the cell phone fisherman to follow reports. Chasing information via cell phone is everything that is wrong about surf fishing in 2023. Spot burning and encouraging the phones. This kind of behavior will be the death of surf fishing. It encourages over crowding and frankly attracts people who don't put the work in and typically those are the people leaving trash, parking illegally and giving the good guys a bad name. Find your own fish! Don't chase reports!

    • @josephganun2277

Trash has been an issue along Raritan Bay for 20+ years, not the last 2 or 3. I found this video to be realistic, not "here's all the slobs, bait everywhere, making it look easy". What's wrong with the cell phone crowd ? Just about everything, but locals violate that trust just as much, possibly more, than occasional visitors. This guy came 350 miles that AM to catch some decent bas, relying on some contacts known as friends and professionally. Give him a break. It's not like he can call his neighbor and have him on the beach in 10 minutes. I fish in Breezy Point, Queens NYC. We are in south Brooklyn, Queens and The Rockaways. The guys around here invented mugging. I like minimum 30ft when I don't have to fan cast. That's still tight. The gang in these parts will cut that to 10 or throw from behind you. My rant but I loved the video.

I have a bone to pick here.
OTW burned the beach I live on INTO THE GROUND during covid. Started putting it on blast in all the reports and to this day I can’t fish in front of my house anymore. I’m not trying to be a jerk but this is a legitimate issue. I live on a small beach with limited structure and they effectively dropped a nuke on it by directly burning the spot. All kinds of people will drive from every corner of MA to fish it now. People even come from Plymouth and Cape cod just to chuck lures at my head. It’s wild

The people that come to Nj for the striper run have ruined striper fishing for me. I don’t even target them anymore haven’t in over 2 years now. I live a 1/4 mile from the raritan bay, been striper fishing since I was a little boy I’m in my 30s now. For over 20 years it was strictly local people fishing together having a blast, then people realized the bay was a breeding ground and feeding frenzy for them so now they trash our beaches, leave burning fires, leave dead blue fish on the beaches, illegal immigrants taking garbage bags full of small striper along with regular citizens, PA boaters who don’t have a clue how to operate a vessel anchored and trolling all over everyone in and out of anchored boats, pulling up on you if you hook up. It’s a miserable time so I thoroughly enjoy togging while everyone else is being sucked in by the striped bass. It’s a shame they’re beautiful fish, no wonder the state keeps pushing for tougher regs.

Unfortunately this video will attract more morons, googans, and undoubtedly Blitzmen from all around to come to Monmouth county to further beat and badger the striped bass into submission as usual…
Dead fish floating, fish taken out of the water for 15 minutes to take a picture, fish being hooked in the eye and gills from treble hooks… it is no exaggeration.
Not to mention some asshole from Pennsylvania camped out to fish your normal spot keeping everything he catches…
