Minute 22 the worst thing I ever seen... thanks God the government took down the commercial striped bass fishing... at this time we may not have any striped bass
Thanks for making this documentary brings back great memories. My best friend, Paul and I would take fall trips out to the "mecca" during the late '80's and '90's for a week, after having done salmon trips in Pulaski previous years. There was nothing better, world class fishing but like fishing not everyday, you had your slow or dead days it's fishing! We would camp at Hither Hills and use the jeep at false (north) bar or the south shore working with the tides on the rips or "under the light." And yes with strippers the rougher the water (whitewater) the better for strippers. Jack Yee was a unique great guy and awesome fisherman, he actually lived at one time in his camper at north bar and used a mailing address of North Bar, Montauk, N.Y. so funny, he was great knowledgeable guy and is missed. And true about Marvin such a tragedy, there was a memorial for Marvin at north bar but over the years the nor'easter's eventually washed it away. One night I was at down in front of Camp Hero forget the name of that section (maybe the sewer, it's been many years) fishing around the rocks (I was a wader fisherman) and as it got slow, here came Jack walking up the rocky beach after having swam in from one of his rocks. I had landed 1 fish and not a keeper (36" was keeper size at that time after the moratorium had been lifted). Jack landed about 10 fish, but no keepers and was done for the night, a very good fisherman and out on that rock by himself. Paul was fishing with eels that night under the light, a couple of fish but no keepers. Some great times out there and some hard weather days out there, including those windy northern cold fronts. Under the light wearing your hooded pull over rain jacket you would bend your head down as a wave would crash on the rocks and spray you, by bending your head down the water would roll off your hood and you would stay dry, and you always needed corkers out there as all the rocks were slippery. Another great memory, I carried in the jeep a propane grill and there was nothing better then having fresh foil cooked small bluefish fillets right after a blitz for lunch! The Mecca!
One last statement: Hats off to some of the great men and icons that fished with Jack, like Big Bernie, Little Richie, Charlie aka Slim, Tricky Dicky, and the list goes on. And let's not forget the women who made sure that their men were all well fed and meals were ready for them when they came back from a long night of fishing........

Theres so few surfcasters now, a decade ago you wouldn't see a surfboard on a truck AT ALL at the point. Now they've taken over the first section of access rd all the way down to the lighthouse. I've hooked 3 last year and plan to hook a lot more this year as well. As long as there's no swimming and surfing signs these scumbags can get fucked. I don't go looking to hook people, but if they start surfing in front of me and FOLLOW me after I move... They're gonna bleed lol
That is very true and now one of our last strongholds in Maine has a Democrat governor that is destroying the state... Let's hope she gets voted out next elections because she is destroying the fishery
this is an awesome movie and its great to see the history of Montauk, unfortunately these days are over the parking lot is no longer packed in the summer with campers the plentiful big fish in large numbers just are not there anymore. People have way over fished this species now a days you can pound the surf for hours and be lucky to catch a few respectable fish
it;'s unsettling to see all of these giant breeding fish being taken by locals who look like they've got a chance to do it frequently. do you guys not understand how much better the fishing would be if you released all of the slot fish you catch? there won't be a striper season in a few decades if people take the breeding females.
They dont get the fact you dont have to be promotional to be great.its fishing for fame at its best.theres guys 10xs better that keep to themselves and keep there stuff quiet
You do realize this documentary is from like 2010 right? 👀 That was a few years before the size regulations and a these are a lot of the guys who helped push for size regulations due to dwindling populations. And in all honesty I've met a handful of these guys in this video they were some of the first people to start throwing back big fish, or throwing them back period and not keeping ANY fish anymore. the scenes changed big time since then so kinda harsh to judge these guys for things they did while it was still legal. You also gotta understand that these fish also migrate between the Chesapeake bay and the long island sound so it's not like it's just these guys that were taking big fish. they also had an incline in seal and shark populations out there so it's not just the fishermens fault. that's why theres size limits now and a lot of people are tossing fish back no matter what size, sometimes it's just fun to get out and go. But some of these guys realized the population was dropping before the new size limits came along and have been throwing fish back. Once you reach a certain age or personal best it's more fun to go help other people learn how to enjoy it too. But having fished there the last couple years, I don't see anyone taking large fish anymore. Catch and release if anything
Awesome video, great to see the history that brought all the fisherman there today. I gained a lot of respect for the older guys out there still doing it.
I was out a few weeks ago surf fishing here on the Space Coast of Florida to check out the status of the fall bait run (pre mullet run). I had about a mile of beach to myself and it was an unusually calm morning. Nice pods of bait were in close and large tarpon with them. Beautiful site! My tackle was way to light for the tarpon so I was looking for small sharks, jacks, blues, etc. I'm casting and wouldn't you know it, ONE other fisherman shows up and casts right across my line. No big deal and it was a no harm no foul thing but I was amazed how courtesy is no where to be found when the bite is on.
I am from PEI Canada and we have bass up here now just getting big runs last couple years!!!!! I paid 60 bucks canadian like 4 years ago for this, well worth the money, awesome to see it on here!!!!!!!

Brings back fishing Montauk with my Dad in the 60’s. We had a grey Chevy Carryall with a white roof just like the one at 16:04. My jaw dropped and I called out when I saw it, but it was just a little different. Ours had a tailgate instead of the vertical rear doors and no signal lights on the front fenders. Boy, this sure brings back memories.
The east coast fishermen are so lucky to catch big stripers. The west coast stripers are so small in the ocean. We keep 19 inch stripers. The biggest stripers 2021 10lb. Very few 20-30 lbs stripers nowadays. 1980-90s we regularly catch 20lbs stripers. California officials had destroyed the stripers and king salmon fishery.
I agree 100% . I’ve been fishing California for stripers since early 1960’s with my brother and dad . 3 fish limits of 20-25 pounds was a typical day . Fish of 30 lbs plus was no big deal . So terrible how incompetent, corrupt , California politicians and officials destroyed the fishery out here .
@@striperking6083 I remember in the early 80s we killed 20-25 stripers in San Francisco Bay limits in a hour off the south tower. It's so terrible how the government has destroyed the salmon and stripers fishery. I remember big king salmon 30lbs plus in the 80s too. You hardly see those 30 to 40 pound king salmon nowadays.
@Andrew Villanueva I hate to be the bearer of bad news , but its going to get worse until there is a total collapse of both fisheries in the very near future . Sturgeon are in a decline also . We sportsmen should have really done something about this as long as 40 yrs ago .
Nonsense like this is a big part of the reason it’s becoming a tourist trap and of course it’s hard to blame the locals for wanting to cash in. All they need now is a Jimmy Buffay song!
Money ruins every beautiful little Hamlet. I've seen it time and again, the wealthy buy into a quaint little town to enjoy the thrill of low class living, only to turn it into the place they were getting away from.
I wish I got Into striper fishing earlier then I did but since that first tight lines reel peel of that striper I was hooked for light I'm heading to montauk for my first time and will be there as a respectful fisherman I can't wait to see what montauk has in-store for me this fall
This was movie was agreat watch😃 I live in the north of New zealand mostly do rockfishing fish every weekend love the big storms in the winter target big snapper that come in to fatten up before heading to deeper water in late spring well alot do😀 we had a fishing comp that used to run up here and I had the same idea as the guy at the end to try and get out further as in swimming out to close islands or rocks I was allowed cos they had a boat section and a shore section I wanted to stay in the shore section they said as long as I was swimming and not in a craft I was fine I never got the chance when the comps came up cos the swell would be over 2meters and or couldn't get people keen enough.lol. good to see keen anglers on this movie tryna step it up no way should they have said no to going out into the water like that not like you were in a boat🙄🙄 our fish stocks are still good but no as many big fish about these days. A good channel to watch is-- The lateral line. If you wanna see awesome new zealnd fishing from boat and some shore stunning scenery as well😀
I'd love to fish NZ. These videos don't do it justice up there. The guys who are throwing baits usually need 8-10oz sinkers on the good days. Those fellas who take a swim to get to their rocks have some huge balls. That outside of googans crossing your line, that sweeping current that's most dangerous aspect of that area. Skishing is something only experienced guys should go after. + it's a white shark pupping ground, so. , , ya know. big old knocking balls on that lot of gentlemen.
@@vincentlafranchi8409 yeah I need to get a you tube channel up and running. I've fished so much of our coast up here around where I live one area I go all the time has amazing scenery and a good amount of fish at this of the year being early winter. We have so much coast line to fish pick the right time and you won't see anyone let alone a boat insight😀
Unfortunately turned out just as I hoped it wouldn't . Seems striped fisherman in the cape and Montauk are the same. " this isnt regular fishing, you can't do this " said in a hundred variations. As well as " it's been ruined. Back in my day me and jimmy could have a blitz to ourselves for 3 days. Now fuckin jimmy jack catches one 15lber and uploads it to the local facebook group and everyone and their motha is here in 10 minutes " Beautifully filmed , but wasted on 15 different guys talking about how they are better than the current bite. Look guys, it is a " is what it is " situation . It's well past being worthy of complaining or even conversation at this point . Get out and have fun

I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve watched this, only video that truly embodies what it is to be a surf fisherman when it’s you’re entire life. My favorite place in the world.
great job!!! im now 59 yrs old and have been fishing some 45 years or so back in 1983 i started working for my currant employer i lived in holbrook there was a fellow worker who live in ronkonkoma and also had a home in montauk he was an amazing surf fisherman i would leave my house at 3am to meet him at his house out there at 4.30 sharp i would pull up his driveway and he was always sitting in his jeep waiting for me lots of times he was still in his waders and he tell me to get mine on as he was into fish but always came to pick me up larry taught me every spot and when and how to fish them from up front to the north bar to coconuts and everywhere in between remember sitting have coffee with jack in his camper when he used to park it on the beach on the north side he would paint beach rocks and hand them out he was not only a great fisherman but also a wonderfull person several years ago i was standing at camp hero and a gentleman asked me if i was larrys son i said no just a good friend he had worked in town and hadnt seen him for awhile i said he had left us but all the great memories of fishing montauk with my dear friend will last for ever!!!
Great story! I have surf fished a lot when I was younger with my dad. I want to get back into it I am 55 now. I used to worry I am too old now but I see its no problem if your carful . I only go in waist high. I hear there are not as many Bass now but honestly I just love fishing in the surf so much I don't care too much about that. Hey if I get a fish its a bonus. What I have learned in my life is don't take anything too seriously just have fun.
Read a book a while back ..10 years or so. Early into this show ,it’ll be mentioned,or not..??..”SQUISHING”maybe.?.the train back in the day. Killer!quit a job in Charleston SC mid 90s,, put my old town loon 138 on top of my civic hatchback with Rod rack on the front. Hit Highway 17 to Maine. Tried visiting there but it was fall. Checked out a few places around New York but didn’t want to risk losing my little boat. 39 days round-trip. Fished the whole way. And the whole way back. Did some good but never saw any really good runs of any type. I was driving while they were swimming or vice versa. Best trip, or one of the best trips of my life.solo. Good times.
Love how my uncle and his truck are in a quick frame shot at 32:10. That shot was from 2012, I specifically remember that day and see my uncle AND a close friends decomissioned beach rigs 😭😭 that was a few hours before I caught my personal best fish, 42" 25lbs caught from the water 🤘
Was Great place in the mid 1990s caught some massive cows there. I used to drive in my motor home from calif to spen mid Sept to mid Oct there. Loved it
Been everywhere on the striper coast and i will say Montauk guys are some of the nicest guys ive ever fished with.if you know your shit they give you respect
I am 62 years old done the point since the late seventies if you’re smart you move west and you’ll catch cows! If you have drone and you understand how strippers feed you’ll figure it out!!! Stay away drones have made it great !!! Montauk has become east Hampton since 2000!!!
Enjoyed the film. Very well done. There’s always a whine about the changes but it is what it is. A special place like Montauk will bring a lot of people
never understood that whole Mantauk fishing thing...way too crowded..tangles..idiots..fall run you can catch stripers and bluefish everywhere on Long Island
I had some special experiences surf fishing montauk in the early 90s. The video is right about it not being an easy place to fish. It is work. The wetsuit thing is crazy. And the locals will yell at you. Once I got hit by some jerk offs plug behind me I never went back.
As a young kid i can remember spending weekend on the block as a Narragansett native i would beg my father to take me to the block in the fall of 84 he finally took me i put 340lbs of fish on the beach the first night he still didnt take me serious untill his 11yr old kid packed out 550bucks worth the fish in a night! After that we spent every weekend and eben some school nights on that block till the moratorium of 85.
Thank god. Took us long enough to get the regs changed. Let the breeders breed. Many of us would be happy if they stopped allowing ANY stripers to be kept, atleast for a 2-5 year period. Or permanently declare it a game fish. If you let the biomass recover once every couple decades it would be a good habit to get into going forward. The regs need to get made by federal agency, not state where other states make money by undercutting nearby state's regs. Or getting lobbied by Omega Protein
I used to drive out there years ago from NJ, sometimes to work but always to fish. I would purposely carry my bright orange bucket with Googan written on it and oh boy the sharpies would be pissed. Paul was one of the guys that turned me on to using wet suits
The slot size is smaller which is great but I think the quantity per person should be allocated. 1 allowable keeper per season for example. I preach catch and release to sustain our recreational fishery for the generations to come. Obviously that'll never happen until it's too late and we don't have a recreational striper fishery anymore.
I have great memories of fishing there 30 years ago mid 1990s every year. I was hard-core then. In the rocks at the light , turtle cove, browns. The good old days. Thousand dollar van staals, $500 custom rods. $800 in plugs in my bag. Lol. Now I couldn't. Im old now. I'll go back there this year 2022. I moved out of Florida this year and now I'm 700 miles closer. RIP Jack Yee. Didn't know him well but he taught me a few things about the place years ago from his ratty red blazer up in the parking lot. Good guy. Fantastic video. Enjoying every minute of it. I'm sure a breakfast in town this year will be $45. Lol. Worth it tho
@@Ruggedjellyfishing so far we have been doing really well on our charters, there are a lot more bigger fish right now then usual considering its the beginning of june
wow, this is priceless! So fun seeing & hearing the pure joy these fisherfolk have from their decades on the water. We need more of these sort of stories/history. I'm never going to be able to get to and fish Montauk, just turned 60 with physical limits, but just hearing these historical accounts direct from those pioneers is somehow satisfying. Great appreciation to all of them, those before them and those who will certainly be seduced into experiencing it in person.
I've never fished Montauk and doubt I will after watching this video. Does anyone fish island beach state park in Jersey? I want to try it. There are some big stripers in south jersey right now
ibsp is dangerous too but no rocks there. Sandbars. It is best when sand eel bite goes off, usually in noreaster season when its 40 degrees or colder out. You need to be out on the bars to reach the fish/be able to fish when it is crowded. Also need to have balls to be the first to push the outer bar as the tide drops. The best spots go to the biggest balls. Keep in mind that you must pay attention to where others are on the bars. If you are trying to find a spot to fit in when it is shoulder to shoulder, and you see 30 feet of space, don't try walking out to it. Or over to it. Reason no one is there is because that is where the channel between the bars is. Where the current flows out and the water is too deep to stand. People will rescue you but you don't want to have to be rescued. Happens all tbe time
On the West coast these introduced creatures devour the heck out of our native salmonids (salmon/steelhead) but they are great sport to catch in the surf. We used to catch 30 pounders in Northern California. We have alot of lore here also. Myself I like a nice early season 8 pounder that has been eating sand crabs. You butterrfly them open and smoke them for an hour with applewood on the side of a Weber. No fillet and no waste. They taste like crab. The larger later season fish stuff themselves on anchovies and are not as tasty. They are oily. I release all large stripers. If you beach a striper here it creates a crazy ass scene. Huge crowds gather around you and wonder how there could even be such a fish in the surf. There are beach goer people that come up and verbally abuse and attack you for catching and releasing a striper on the beach. They start crying or acting nuts. It's a different kind of war here in CA. These people here don't get sportfishing at all. Fishing seems to have become some kind of war. Peace.
How are they all dunking their reels under water? On the west coast we avoid dunking or it could destroy the reel. Using a sealed reel helps. I still keep my Shimano Vanford sealed reel out of the water. But these guys are dunking and reeling under water. What reel do I need to fish like that in a wet suit?
Great video👍 I grew up fishing my whole life with my father he thought me how to make my own rigs and make my own sinkers. As I got older I transition over to surfcasting because I wasn't fortunate to have money to buy a boat. So I said to myself their's got to be away that I can catch decent sized fish from shore?. From then on I would prefer to go surfcasting over a boat any day. This video inspires to become a better surfcaster like these great legends in this video.
Guys that fish New Jersey, is it a completely different animal that fishing Cape Cod? We seem to be the 2 destinations. But this is totally different than fishing the canals and beaches of the cape. There are a handful of wetsuiters here, but its mostly in rhode island

Fish are mostly gone and the place is hamptons weird now, nothing like it used to be even 10 years ago, I pray the north fork stays the same
Nonsense like this is a big part of the reason it’s becoming a tourist trap and of course it’s hard to blame the locals for wanting to cash in. All they need now is a Jimmy Buffay song!
Brilliant video, really enjoyed it. Greetings from Ireland 🇮🇪 🎣👍
Great job! Nice to see the final product! Remember the great conversations at Campsite while you were working on this! Regards Bill.
Nothing is like it used to be its a shame because id rather see nature then people
Hate seeing the big ones kept. let them live a breed! awesome video though. I'll be making the trip this year.
Little did they know 15 yrs later and the towns gone. Just another hamptons town now. Glad I spent time there before it was ruined.
Agreed. I fish stripers on the west coast and they ruined our towns also.
Money ruins every beautiful little Hamlet. I've seen it time and again, the wealthy buy into a quaint little town to enjoy the thrill of low class living, only to turn it into the place they were getting away from.
Now they are heading to Maine which is our last stronghold
I wish I got Into striper fishing earlier then I did but since that first tight lines reel peel of that striper I was hooked for light I'm heading to montauk for my first time and will be there as a respectful fisherman I can't wait to see what montauk has in-store for me this fall
North forker here, Stop by on your way back and try fishing plum gut while you're out east.
Hey rich live on the island my whole life am 25 born 95 and I appreciate you making this a lot.
This was an awesome video. Thanks for uploading it.
Amazing. Best Fishing Documentary I've ever seen.
Congratulations guys.
Rock on.
Best documentary I've watched in years!!
Now fuckin jimmy jack catches one 15lber and uploads it to the local facebook group and everyone and their motha is here in 10 minutes "
Beautifully filmed , but wasted on 15 different guys talking about how they are better than the current bite.
Look guys, it is a " is what it is " situation . It's well past being worthy of complaining or even conversation at this point . Get out and have fun
Well said, old fisherman are some of the most ornery fuckers on the planet.
I have watched/listened to this at-least ten times
Awesome catch and release! Striper addiction is real! Keep fishing and keep smiling my brother! 🙌
Had a place on Ditch Plains Rd. back in the late 70's...The surf fishermen out there are all overdue for a cat scan followed by a frontal lobotomy.
Pricey real estate now
@@LilyGazou Biggest mistake I ever made..
@@pocono49murphy96 my cousins sold their cottage after their father died-for a pittance. Now it rents for 50k a month in summer.
My siblings and I are holding on to ours and hope that the next generation appreciates it.
I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve watched this, only video that truly embodies what it is to be a surf fisherman when it’s you’re entire life. My favorite place in the world.
San Franciscobay had great bass fishing from 1940-1990. Now they are gone, you plug for them now 1 20 inch bass for every 6 trips thanks
“They don’t have enough testicular fortitude.” The best line of the movie. Good job!
Now Montauk is a joke.to bad
Probably the best thing I've watched in a while... This was awesome...
Truly enjoyed this film! Thanks to all who made it happen…. Happy fishing!
great job!!! im now 59 yrs old and have been fishing some 45 years or so back in 1983 i started working for my currant employer i lived in holbrook there was a fellow worker who live in ronkonkoma and also had a home in montauk he was an amazing surf fisherman i would leave my house at 3am to meet him at his house out there at 4.30 sharp i would pull up his driveway and he was always sitting in his jeep waiting for me lots of times he was still in his waders and he tell me to get mine on as he was into fish but always came to pick me up larry taught me every spot and when and how to fish them from up front to the north bar to coconuts and everywhere in between remember sitting have coffee with jack in his camper when he used to park it on the beach on the north side he would paint beach rocks and hand them out he was not only a great fisherman but also a wonderfull person several years ago i was standing at camp hero and a gentleman asked me if i was larrys son i said no just a good friend he had worked in town and hadnt seen him for awhile i said he had left us but all the great memories of fishing montauk with my dear friend will last for ever!!!
Good times.
I need to get to Montauk.
This is great!! Montauk is such a special place to fish. Love it!! This really captures the whole Montauk experience!
Being a good ol Florida fishing boy this just made me feel some type of way. Fishing is absolute best hobby and if you don’t agree fight me 😂
100% - I miss fishing along the Gulf waters. Been in the DMV (DC MD VA) for about 13 years now and this deff makes me feel homesick
Was Great place in the mid 1990s caught some massive cows there. I used to drive in my motor home from calif to spen mid Sept to mid Oct there. Loved it
Best video I’ve seen
what a bunch of legends
Where’s Marty and Arty!? They soaking on a chunk?
Been everywhere on the striper coast and i will say Montauk guys are some of the nicest guys ive ever fished with.if you know your shit they give you respect
I am 62 years old done the point since the late seventies if you’re smart you move west and you’ll catch cows! If you have drone and you understand how strippers feed you’ll figure it out!!! Stay away drones have made it great !!! Montauk has become east Hampton since 2000!!!
Enjoyed the film. Very well done.
There’s always a whine about the changes but it is what it is.
A special place like Montauk will bring a lot of people
Great job Richard!
This is that old school mentality of greed and waste
never understood that whole Mantauk fishing thing...way too crowded..tangles..idiots..fall run you can catch stripers and bluefish everywhere on Long Island
Haven’t spent much time fishing out there have you?
If you ever heed the call, this is a MUST watch.
I had some special experiences surf fishing montauk in the early 90s. The video is right about it not being an easy place to fish. It is work. The wetsuit thing is crazy. And the locals will yell at you. Once I got hit by some jerk offs plug behind me I never went back.
R.I.P. Willie Young
Can’t keep those cows anymore
Great stories awesome video!! All the guys are bad ass fishermen!! Keep fishing till the end!!! You guys are all the reel deal ,no doubt!!! Very cool
Just love it! Surfcasting at the point wearing a wetsuit, there is nothing like that.
Only downside to this awesome video is that they don't have Wetzel in it.
Outstanding work. I can't thank you enough.
The slot size is smaller which is great but I think the quantity per person should be allocated. 1 allowable keeper per season for example. I preach catch and release to sustain our recreational fishery for the generations to come. Obviously that'll never happen until it's too late and we don't have a recreational striper fishery anymore.
I lost track of how many times I’ve watched this lol
Great documentary. I see a lot of old friends in here and a lot of them have passed. Cell phones and Internet killed fission. Smokinjo682👍
If you think fishing is dead, you haven’t spent much time online. I’d argue more people fish today because of the internet if anything
It's fishing not fission
Beautiful stuff!
Too many ego’s and not enough fishermen.
Cmon already and make Vol.2
You finance it I'll shoot it!
If you're wondering why the striper population is hurting... Just watch this 1 hour and 20 minute video.
The striped bass fishing is amazing now since the slot started two seasons ago
@@scary_scat3924 last season was great but I haven’t done that well this season even though I’ve spent more time on the water than last year
@@Ruggedjellyfishing so far we have been doing really well on our charters, there are a lot more bigger fish right now then usual considering its the beginning of june
@@scary_scat3924 it’s been nothing but schoolies in VA. I was expecting at least a few big ones but it’s been nothing but runts
wow, this is priceless!
You can do it. You can fish off the beaches of Hither Hills at dawn, you don’t have to climb rocks.
Beautiful.
Just simply "Beautiful "
Vanstaal, Zeebaas, or a greased packed Penn 706
van staal
Alvey sidecast.
Reminds me of the dudes down at the cape cod canal
You guys are fuckin awesome 100%
That’s what I like to hear man these people don’t know what the hell are you talking about
My father started going out to Montauk with his father in the 1940's and my dad carried the tradition and we grew up surfcasting in the 70's and 80's.
Great video👍
I grew up fishing my whole life with my father he thought me how to make my own rigs and make my own sinkers.
I been there once trying to fish i dint catch anything im a beginner 🤣
