I know this video is years old but just want to thank you, the video on the same topic from PCA did not mention this side of the window assembly. Only after watching your video and disassembling the door further did I find what really needs zip tied and now the window works flawlessly! But something to be noted is the US spec has a speaker assembly that also needs removed to access
Even though it appears that you're not responding to the kind comments of the viewers, I'll say that despite the vertical video format, your content was excellent. You showed in a very detailed way how to perform this procedure without it being overly long and tedious. Thank you!
Nick great video that gave me the confidence to tackle my 986 window problem. The tie wrap solution did not work too great for me, instead I used a Halfords M7 Brake Adjuster (code 159015) instead. I carefully bored out the internal hole to 7.5mm to accommodate the green window ferrule shown in your video and I also filed the split nut on the brake adjuster to help clear the diameter of the window wire. By removing those pins you highlighted , the widow wire can be stretched enough to attach the modified brake adjuster. Once fitted the nut can be used to tension the widow wire. When disconnecting the battery, the ignition key must be inserted and left on, otherwise the alarm will go off. Thank you for you excellent video.
The water shield here is VERY important. A leak there, or anywhere else can foul the ECU computer beneath the seat and render your car useless. A $1k mistake I discovered my first month into ownership of my 986.
Thanks for the video. I had to put another zip tie around the cable and secure it to the door frame due to the cable popping out of the window mechanism.
Good stuff mate. The exact same thing just happened to my 986 passenger window, and my first thought was that the micro switch was stuffed. As you point out in the video, my window still moves a little, so the cable tension is the issue. Thanks to your video, I will be fixing this problem myself this week. Cheers!
Just a follow up to this. The fix worked like a charm, but could I get the window to drop again after? Could I f#ck. It turns out that you have to lower the window all the way down and back up again to ‘standardise’ it
Great video. Just changed my regulator because it was grinding and it turns out the cable had come off the pulley on that same corner because it had become too slack. I probably could have salvaged it but new 1 in hand I changed it anyway. I used the wife's hairdryer to heat the membrane seal and it stuck back down perfectly
Thanks for the thorough video! My issue is with a 2008 Boxster limited edition. The window goes down a bit to allow the door to open, but while the door is open, the window goes back up, so I can't close the door without the window hitting the frame. So I have to pull the handle up slightly to get the window to drop down and then I can close the door and let go of the handle right at the end so the window comes up right as the door closes. This sounds like a different issue. Do you know what this problem is or how I would fix it?
That could possibly be due to the tension on the window regulator. You can adjust the cable tension to remove the excess cable. But before you do that reset the glass position. Ignition on, put window all the way down with finger on the switch and when it is at the bottom, keep holding the switch fie 10 seconds. Then put window to the top and hold again for 10 seconds. Then open and close as normal. This resets the measured control of the window and can affect the glass position
Great video man thanks for this. I haven't really worked on too many Porsche's and we all know how expensive going to the dealer is and most smaller shops won't work on them. Somebody's gotta help the consumers right? This helps big time because I have a diagnosis on a window not going up/down issue. So I will probably have to go through this procedure, thanks. I'm ordering a door panel kit right now, I'm not even going to risk some twitch and I gash the interior of these babies LOL. Question, when replacing a dead battery, is there anything special I need to know like some weird re-programming like the BMW's do when you change batteries? The year is merely the same.
On my 2002 986 the windows go down while ill pull the handles /inside or outside, but when ill open the door the window goes up all the way... Do you know what might be the issue? Tnx
@@peterk9818 it was the lock itself. Get a screwdriver and move the hitch to see if there s gonna be movement on the window. If there is,than its definetly the lock
I have Same type of car. What about a door that won’t close. It’s not the latch in the locking place. It’s just does t want to latch closed once the doors closed. Passenger side. Any suggestions? Thanks

One of the very best DIY videos on RUclips! Thanks!!!
Thank you very much! This worked for me on a 996. Door trim removal was a little different but the bird-tie adjust did the trick. Cheers.

Thank you. Fixed both my windows doing this.
Excellent video Nick! Can you tell me what the electrical plug-in seen at the 6:02 mark does?
Great video Nick
What a class. Tks.
Hi Nick, this ,may be my problem as window does drop a few mm. What silicone sealant do you use for the waterproof internal cover?

Perfectly described - thank you

I just replaced my window regulator and my fuse for the power windows keeps blowing, any ideas what I should do? I’m a rookie at these repairs
GREAT VID THANKS FOR THE INFO
To seal the doir trim you can use a basic household silicone sealant - clear is best as it won't show if you use too much

Hello
My window is doing the exact same thing. Did you ever figure out what the problem was?

@@nenadsaz Thank you so much for your timely reply. Really appreciate it!
Nicely done. Cheers
at last a proper video. on how to repair and remove door panel great job nick.
What sealant would you recommend for reapplying the membrane?
Tiger seal is one of the best but a quality silicone or RTV is fine - just make sure there are no gaps in the sealant and the foam isn't torn
Didn't work on my 996 i guess mine is probably t switch that latches to side of car but thanks for t info.
When you need good clear instructions try and find an Englishman because they articulate the steps like no other!
What did you use to reseal the door trim?
Use a clear silicone

Will this fix the problem if the window moves, but hits the top and then goes down and bit and back up, or would that be the sensor itself?
How did you fix that problem? Thx!!!
Sorry but I’d advise NOT to use household silicone on ANY part of your car metalwork it contains material that will accelerate rusting.
Extremely unhelpful, your display was very limited window rather a full screen to view your workout, Thank.
