When you open the door to your 986/996, the window is supposed to drop slightly to allow it to slide under the roof. If your window doesn't do this, a firm shut could break the glass. Here's a temporary fix using zip ties.

Excellent “no nonsense” video as always. Thanks Vu (and Team) for providing lots of great information in this and all of your PCA videos. I always enjoy them regardless of the topic at hand 😊

Vu this fit all of my 986 symptoms, but did not work for me. The green ferules which were loose on your car were tight on mine, and nonadjustable. I did use this opportunity to replace the old and awful door woofer speakers with new Rockford Fosgates that sound terrific with my new Pioneer hd radio with BT. Thanks for all you do for our club.

Thanks for sharing. Bummer it didn't work in your car. But glad it was useful to replace the speakers. Thanks for watching and be sure to subscribe.

    Helpful and direct as expected.
You may want to also introduce the adjustment screws on the bottom of the door.
I had a similar issue on my 97. Making an adjustment there (door bottom) allowed me to not have to break the seal on the door, and restore function.
Either way a new regulator feels like the right fix when time allows.

For anyone who needs a new regulator, I just purchased one from Sunset Porsche for $260 shipped. Wish I had seen this before I ordered one…

When my 99 986 base, was my daily. I had to replace my window regulator every year almost. Constant problem. Bought some from pelican parts and they don't last. I haven't yet tried letting a dealer do it yet. But for now. What I did is just lower the actual glass down where it will clear the top seal.
Similar to what you did here. I got tired of replacing them so often.

very useful : haven't stripped the doors on my 996 before. One question though: when I operate either of my door handles (inner or outer), the window does drop - but if I let go the handles (say door open), the window goes straight back up. Which means the glass is too high when closing. How does the car 'know' the door is ajar, and not to put the window back up until it's closed ? I can't see a door light switch (which I was guessing it used to determine the door was ajar - the interior light does come on/off as you open/close the door as normal. Only does this on one door (drivers' side).

I’m guessing the 987(.2) is nearly identical? Does the door panel itself disassemble? I’d like to refinish that rubberized paint that scratches so easily while I have it apart.
Is the permanent fix new cables or new regulator?

I have this problem with my 2002 986. I followed you steps for the quick fix but my cable is not loose. When I pull the door. handle, the window does move a little. I can friction push the window down to the right position. It’s like either the window is binding or the window is loose in the track somehow. It functions correctly when opening the top or using the inside controls. Any ideas on how to fix this? TIA

Hi there! My after I have replaced the window regulator on my Porsche Cayman 987,I have this problem..the window goes up and down if I press on the button like impulse, the micro switch are ok on my car,I have done the test, but if I am pressing on the button for the window to go down, it's not stopping at the edge of the door frame ,it keeps going all the way down, and if I try to get it back up,is hitting the inside door frame, and I need to get it back by sliding a credit card and guide the glass and press the up botton, and all ok,but like I have said..I don't know how to make it stop before it goes all the way down and inside the door, passing the door frame limit...pleas help.Thank you!😊
