I first laid eyes on this man in 1979 outpatient while in county jail. I was 22 years old I went back out but some of the things this man said stuck in my head. He had planted a seed of hope and I didn’t even know it. I have 35 years of joyful sober living today and when I watch these videos it brings tears to my eyes simple talk for a complicated mind I’ll be forever grateful

Thanks for sharing that , Joe.
Interestingly, similar experience, except I was in navy jail, they showed us Chalk Talk film. It was 84, I was 20, only took ten more years before I went to phone book, in despair, called hotline, got sober after that Step Over to Barroom and try........lol.
29 years and some change. So grateful for the seed planter!
Ha, this slowLearner Tennessee man finally decided that they were serious about those words "thoroughly followed our path".

I had 17 years of continuous sobriety.
After 15 years I completely stopped going to meetings. It was inevatable that I would pick up a drink again. All the "yet's" the speak about in AA came true after I picked up that first drink. D.U.I 's , 3 times in jail for other alcohol related defences and a desire to end my life just about every day. The insanity of alcoholism is cunning baffling and oh so powerful. This happened over 4 years but today I have 1 week clean and sober. No it's not a long time but I am full of hope and allready feeling much better. Most importantly I got a sponsor right away and I am making at least 2 meetings a day. I will never beat this disease but by going to meetings and believing that a power greater than myself can restore me to sanity I can recover one day at a time. Thank you Father Martin for your wisdom and the wonderful way you speak about the gift of the 12 steps of AA
Long after your death you are still helping alcoholics an addicts❤ Rest in peace and thank you for giving this alcoholic a new lease on life. God Bless us all and never ever give up!!!! ❤🙋💪👬👭👫💖

I am 51 with 15 years of sobriety. I watched these videos when I was 17, in my first rehab.I was rebellious, selfish and disconnected from reality. I heard Father Martin , but I did not listen and it was not until I became willing to admit self defeat that I became open minded enough to listen, apply, then comprehend the intricate nature of my insanity and how a greater power could (if I allowed it) restore my sanity. I knew people were sober, but seemed so far out of reach for me. There were so many seeds planted at that time in A.A. and N.A. that I got sick of hearing them, but as life went on these were the ones that saved me from further destruction. I think now of the ones I might have forgot that might have saved me going further down the dark empty tunnel of despair that kept me in a state of relapse. The 12 steps not only taught me how to stay sober, it taught me how to live. Life cannot be perfectly lived, nor will it ever be, but the strive for perfection is the path to wisdom. The captain of a ship cannot control the storms or the waves, he can only learn to navigate through them the best he can, for the sake of himself, the crew and all the passengers that are in his care.

When I came to AA (in Switzerland) I heard some English people speak about Father Martin. I never heard or saw him. Now 46 years later I see him on youtube and appreciate very much his speeches. When I came to AA I had lost all faith and through the experience I got a non religion faith in a higher power who is always here. I am very greatful to be a sober alcoholic. Sobriety can't be enough estimated.

Rob, I have 2 atheist friends in recovery and they both have over 20 years clean and sober. Personally I am not a religious person. I don't care what God is, if there's a God, or what anybody else believes in. I only know what has worked for me. I do the best I can, and for 10 years I haven't needed a drink. Pretty good for what was once a hopeless drunk, I'd say.

I have to disagree with the priest. Depending on what you believe about the God of your understanding a doorknob can work as a higher power. If you believe God is in all things then he's in the doorknob too. What is knob made of, it's metal. Where did metal come from, rocks. How did the metal in in the rocks, God put it there. So God was in it from the start. God is in all things and all things created by him. You have to expect a priest is going to get technical based on religion when you approach this subject. But I agree with his overall insight.

To Mr Swearingham and Mr Edmonds: It is evident to me that both of you have some serious emotional and/or psychiatric issues going on, and for whatever reasons, you fail to grasp the basic principles of the AA organisation.
Let me set the record straight.., but first, a disclaimer... I am a qualified and accredited alcohol and drug treatment specialist, and have been so for many years. Second, I have been a member of AA for the better part of 45 years.
I can tell you, categorically, that there are NO Government background checks.., there is NO harassment by the general public.., there are NO underhand or covert methods employed by AA (or any of the other 12-Step self-help groups), to cause or induce psychosis, paranoia, or any other mental illness. Your paranoia sounds very much of your own making, and based on misinformation.
AA does not engage in criticism of other treatment methods, does not sit in judgement of others, nor is it some kind of group of religious fanatics.
We believe in a 'Power Greater Than Ourselves' .., that's it... Nothing more.
Messr's Swearingham and Edmonds, I would strongly suggest that you get your facts straight. Change your shitty outlook on life, and stop criticising things because you don't understand them, or they don't work for you.
Also, ask yourselves, "What did I do today to help lift someone up?", or "How did I show kindness to a stranger in need?"
Finally, get over yourselves, your uninformed and ignorant opinions are not helpful, or wanted, and are indeed, harmful.

Father not a weakness at all - a soul sickness with Egos that cannot comprehend the Alcoholic is beyond human aid, Greater than "OUR" self's - In meeting egos can see the sickness not sure who is sicker when someone is already here in A.A after 6 months the sponsor or the sponsee as we are easily diverted by people, places and things. An inside job PERSONAL WILINESS IS THE KEY! A thing discovered not taught or learned - Beyond human aid! Step one ? Powerlessness Hmm ! When you want to stop , can you ? When you start can you control the amount you drink ? lf the answer is no you might have A problem Step 2 Came to believe , who did ? the people who wrote the Book ! How did they do that ? They took Steps 3 to 9 ( 2 days !? its in the Big Book ) clear cut precise instructions !!?? Thats it ! Simple huh ? QUESTIONS & ANSWERS . EVERY STEPS BEGS THE QUESTION " HOW DID THEY DO IT " ? EVERY QUESTION IS ANSWERED IN THE FIRST 103 PAGES OF SAID BOOK , FACT ?? A BUNCH OF EX DRUNKS WROTE IT !! THEY'D HAVE SCREWED UP A 2 CAR FUNERAL , ARGUED WHERE TO PUT A FULL STOP !! YET THEY DONE IT WITHIN A YEAR !! HIGHER POWER OR WHAT ?? THE ONLY DIFFICULT PART IS FINDING THE MAN DESCRIBED ON PAGE 18 , A RARE CREATURE ? HOW COME ? THEY'RE ALL DOING THEIR OWN THING !! ADULT CHILDREN ! THATS WHY AA DOES'NT WORK !! BY THE TIME YOU FINISH LISTENING TO THE PRIEST YOU COULD HAVE TAKEN THE FIRST 9 STEPS AND PRACTICING 10 & 11 WELL ON YOUR WAY TO RECOVERY . EVERY THING I SAY IS IN THE BOOK ! HO HUM . HAVE A GOOD LIFE !

You attend a meeting to fix yourself, not to change others or judge. That tells me someone is a dry drunk... get into your program, work the steps, you do you.

Auto...people like you miss out because you continue to be so hostile towards religion that you can't hear that he is saying that although your Higher Power can be God... IT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE. He clearly said that to me.

this proves AA is a god based programme. not much use to atheists.

+Rob Creighton Surely even atheists believe in SOMEthing. This program is more about what you believe in that what you DON'T believe in. It begins with the mere willingness to admit that there IS for sure something greater/bigger than myself. And that's who/what I turn to. If you have a problem acknowledging the existence of God, would you also be so adamant about there being NO power greater than you? If you can see ibethangel's comment about atheist friends with over 20 years sober time? How would that have been possible?
