That is so cool to hear. I love knowing your work is leveling up from some quick tips on this channel. Stay tuned for next week, I think it will be about a few more fairlight things.
Thank you Chadwick, another super quality tutorial video. In my book you are today's top provider for lessons focused on editing in Resolve. Totally appreciated!! Not to be greedy, but how about a follow to combine this auto-selector functionality when using the Speed Editor! As the go to source for everything Speed Editor, its a natural!
So glad I found you. I often use the shift-click combo to disable and enable all auto select at once then turn on what I want. I believe you are showing a better way.
That is very kind of you to say, I have a long ways to go, but I'm certainly a Phlearn fan (although lately getting into Affinity Photo). thanks for the support.
As always, great video and tips, thanks! It would be great if Davinci had a simple 'Paste on Top' feature (like their 'insert on top'). So, with one keystroke, you could paste a clip automatically to an empty track...and not need to toggle the Auto Track Selector on and off every time. Final Cut does this by default and it's a great time saver.
Man I have been binging on your channel! You do such great detailed dives into information, but couple it with actual workflow, so it makes more sense on why you would use a feature. Appreciate the awesome tutorials!
Man, you ROCK so much.. i'm a french guy from Indian Ocean and i really wana thanks you for what you've done on YT .. It's so helpful and thrilling.. i'm getting involve in the video editing since a wile and you are giving me the work flow i've been looking for years.. Thanks to you again.. and thanks to BlackMagics Programers cause this software is simply the best ! Best regards. J.M/
I love these deep dives. They give me new options to edit faster, and get those creative ideas on the timeline fast. The thing I still mis from ALL tutorials is just seeing everything being linked together. I would pay and arm and a leg to see more editors just work for a couple of hours. To see what I can learn from it. Maybe you can do a livestream where you work on a project, raw and dirty ;) (with the shortcuts you use onscreen)
I love the suggestion and idea, and it could be a lot of fun. I just need to find the right project to do it with that doesn't matter if it's material that hasn't been released yet. To get the shortcuts to pop up though it might need to be a pre-recorded thing so I can use screenflow. Either way, I've taken note. For a lot of people I think they would get bored but I can see value in it too. Cheers!
You might be right about people being bored, maybe not :) A nerd like me won’t. anyway, would love it if you tried. I think if you use OBS + input overlay. But there are other solutions out there.
@@CreativeVideoTips I used to be a broadcast support guy for Apple in my region, so much of that style of editing that is so great for news and short story cutting, I really championed for the efficiency of output, given so many of those guys are working on a 24 hour news cycle.
Crikey that was a lot of information in one hit. I'll have to watch this very slowly for it to sink in. But thanks for putting this out there for your viewers Chadwick.
Thanks Martin, as Jim pointed out I probably hit the keyboard shortcuts too quickly on this one. Please ask any questions here though and I'll try to get to them.
Pablo, you are the Gold, that helps make this channel run. Thank you for the kind feedback. Is Resolve your primary editing tool? Do you use Final Cut at all? I have had some requests for both and trying to figure out planning tutorials on into 2022 and want to know what you'd like to see.
@@CreativeVideoTips thank you very much, yes Resolve is my primary editing software and I must say, it’s probably my favorite software of all times, period. In fact I make resolve tutorials myself when I have the time in my channel (in Spanish), but your channel is an incredible source of information and learning. You and Darren Mostyn are my favorite Resolve channels. Congratulations again !!
Thanks for some very valuable and handy tips Chad. Just one I can't understand - 02:59 Select Clips. You say "Auto Select enables you to select individual clips that are stacked up high without touching a mouse" but then you have to use your mouse to disable tracks and then afterwards re-enable them. Why not just click on the clip to select it? One mouse click, much easier and quicker. What am I missing?
Haha Neil, you're right that was a do as I say moment. I guess for visual brevity but the thought behind it is that all of this can be keyboard-driven. Enable and disable tracks with the shortcut for that track (Option F1,2,3(the number of the track for video) and add command or control to that for audio. Then Shift V selects the clip. All that to say I don't always only use a keyboard. Use a mouse, a tablet, and a control panel. Whatever to get the job done fastest for you. This is just something to consider. I find I use auto select controls the most when doing repetive tasks and not always part of the creative timeline building process.
@@CreativeVideoTips Well you just gave me some more valuable tips, I didn't know that you could enable/disable tracks using Option (or Alt) F1, F2, F3 etc. I can see now how this could be done entirely without using a mouse. Thanks again for the great tips.
Find some editing tutorials a little overwhelming when they involve a lot of keyboard shortcuts. Seems to me that if the functionality is addressed first then later add in the keyboard shortcuts that most people would get there with less confusion. Your videos are at really quick pace which intermediate users I am sure appreciate. My advice would be to split the video into two and explain all the functionality in the front and the keyboard shortcuts in the second half of the video - both with demonstrations. So the person watching can take in the function first with sample of application, then the keyboard shortcuts once they completely understand the functionality. Hope that makes sense. Kind of writing this comment for people that might be overwhelmed to basically stick with it. This is in no way a critique of your video Chadwick, I enjoy watching your videos - even with the groaner jokes. Cheers
This advice is gold. And man, I don't know why I didn't think of this before. I will start trying to approaching my tutorial outlines this way moving forward. Sometimes I forget there are even menu options for some of the functions, but that would be great to show. And yes my dad jokes are terrible, just hoping to give folks a breather every once and a while from the dense tips.
Great video!! Is there any video you've done in the past or can do explaining why clips get a little red icon on the side. When you highlight it they say "slip into place" or "move into place". I don't understand how I "slipped a clip" but I think it might have to do with this auto track selector? Cheers 🍻
Yes, it's for sure been part of some of my past videos, probably on multicam. But essentially those buttons are perfect to fix sync when linked selection was turned off and you moved, usually accidentally an audio clip away from the linked video clip. Move - will move the clip on the timeline. Slip - moves the guts of the inside of the sound to get in sync without moving it on the timeline so it won't change other timing you have around it with other clips. Hope this helps.
Always getting great tips/tricks here. Would love to see a video on how to best color grade a multi-cam timeline already cut "IF" you did't do it beforehand.
Happy to help Scott. I'm curious if you had heard of the quick trim, or sometimes called fast trim feature before using JKL? I'm thinking about doing a tutorial about this as a stand alone because I think most people miss this one.
Hi Chad, first of all great video and thanks for taking the time to put it together. I am new to editing and recently downloaded the davinci 17 free version however my 4k video from.my go pro hero 10 are choppy but are fine on windows player any input would be much appreciated.
Thank you so much for watching. I would suggest creating proxy media to help it play back smooth. This video right here should point you in the right direction - ruclips.net/video/3WZ28rOy-Co/видео.html - Another quick idea is to change you timeline resolution to 1080p if it isn't already, just for editing, then change back for exporting to higher resolutions.
Okay, I didn't understand a thing 🤣🤣🤣 but that's just me, I'm kinda new to DaVinci. I've been using it for very basic editing and need to devote some time to study it and take advantage of your videos. I'm very interested in making more impressive videos, even a little movie 😁 Thank you.
Chadwick, - great content. I religiously watch all that you are putting out. Thank you! I have a question for you: I have been using Auto Select for a while. There is one thing that I would love to solve in Resolve, which works extremely easily in Final Cut Pro, but is painful in Resolve. Here is the scenario: imagine a video that uses two pieces of music, and for each of them there are many B-Roll clips that are carefully cut to the beat. I currently place each piece of music on its own track, and have to remember to turn on or off the Auto Select button for each track depending where I am editing. If I am editing the B-roll around the first piece of music, I have to turn off Auto Select for the first music track to avoid cutting up that piece of music, but I have to turn on Auto Select for the second music track, to make sure that stays connected to the clips that are linked to it. What I really want from Resolve is a Lock Clip command that allows me to tell it that these are pieces of music, and should not be sliced up, but need to stay connected to the associated Movie clips when those move. Lock Track doesn't work, as music won't move when it needs to to stay connected. Can you think on an easier way to do this? When you start having three or four pieces of music in your video, this gets to be really complex and easy to screw up.
I feel ya. This is always a challenge as videos get longer. Your strategy is correct though. Each section should have its own music track and only disable auto select on that section when you’re working on it. This could mean if you end up with 8 songs you use 8 music tracks. An alternate way, which I don’t use would be to nest sections of your project with compound clips. I don’t love this because getting in and out is a slow process. One more idea depending how complex, you can in fact link clips with linked selection so they behave like a connected clip in Final Cut Pro. This doesn’t really solve cutting against a music track but does make move clips easier, like a sound effect synced to a visual. Right click after both are selected and link. Then the chain link selection button holds them as a unit.
@@CreativeVideoTips Thanks for the reply. I I want to make sure I understand what you mean by "link clips with linked selection". Right now, I do link the music to the first clip, so that it will move with it. But I suspect you were meaning something more sophisticated than that. I have also tried the compound clips idea, but there are issues with compound clips, so had to go to nested timelines. And it was really too painful moving between them. Since you feel the pain of what I have experienced, if you ever get a chance to talk to a product manager at BlackMagic, it would be great if you could ask them for the Lock Clip feature, as this would completely solve the problem. Thanks! BTW I just watched your "Easily Cut Dailies like a PRO" and that was a revelation and huge productivity tip for me. Your content is excellent!
all I wanted was to be fluent in English, to be able to take full advantage of these tips, here in Brazil we don't find such high level tutorials so easily
Thanks Chadwick! Though at about 4 mins into video, you talk about moving to next edit point by using the up or down arrow. I'm curious how you setup your keyboard shortcuts to make them do that. For me, that does not seem to work, so I obviously don't have the arrows mapped properly. When I type: "Go to next edit" in the keyboard customization search block, I don't see that as an option (though there is an option to "go to next marker"). I must be missing something, because it was something that was easy to map in Media Composer and Premiere Pro. Any suggestions as to what I'm missing here? By the way, I've learned so much from watching your channel; you're the best!
I was so excited to learn about Auto Select but as I'm listening, all of your commands are for a MAC. I don't use MAC. I can translate but I have to look up most of it. I'm sooooo pressed for time! Nonetheless, I'll listen again a few times and see what I can extract. Do you have this tutorial for PC?
Hi Ellen, Thank you for your feedback. I will try to be better about including both shortcut commands verbally on newer tutorials in 2022. In a nutshell, it's command/control and option/alt
Haha awesome. For AAF export there isn’t much to it other than using the preset for protools. There use to be a bug that didn’t let you have disabled clips and it would crash but not anymore. I’ll might do a simple written blog post on my website for this for you this week. I’ll try to remember to follow back with those settings.
@@CreativeVideoTips Hi Chadwick, could you also explain how the AAF workflow works back into the Avid MediaComposer. I always get an error message when I re-import and open the AAF back into AMC. Is this workflow broken? Best Daniel
Your tutorials are great but this is the first time Ive ever had something not work. With trimming the selected edit points using command J & K, it doesnt go frame by frame it like starts playing the clip. Maybe thats how its expected to work?
@@CreativeVideoTips Just take the compliment! Seriously though, you're doing great work breaking down more technical aspects of editing and saving us manual- averse people the trouble. And thanks for watching
absolutely - Usually this has to do with the gamma tag settings that are getting applied on your exports from Resolve. The nice thing is Final Cut makes this pretty simple because it is always managed by the mac color sync. Check out this video, the main exception is I would usually create Quicktime ProRes files to go back to final cut - ruclips.net/video/8tiF-EnTlto/видео.html
I wish Resolve had the option to auto-enable the Auto Track Selector after an edit. Most of the time you only need it for one particular operation, and after that you want all tracks to be selected again. I often have to fix sync issues because I find out too late that one track wasn't 'auto selected'. (BTW: why is it called auto tracks selector, nothing 'auto' here).
Mark clip is a way to set in and out points around a clip, without needing to tap, I and O for the beginning and end. It's a fast professional way to quickly make and move selections. Most of the time on the timeline I never will mark i unless I need it to be in the middle of a clip. I"ll just mark x and then if I need more selected to the right on the timeline I'll mark O to extend the selection to be larger.
PLZ explain "Lowest track with AUTO SELECT ON". Really Inserting or Pasting CLIPS in DR compared to any other Editor has been a real PITA for the 3 years I've been using DR FREE & STUDIO. Sorry but The older I get the harder it gets. Learning and Lesson Retention, That's why I try to AVOIDED most 'Keyboard Shortcuts' I can screw up a timeline in 3 seconds so bad I literally must start over from scratch. I've learned when attempting to do something Complicated I copy the whole Timeline to a new one so if I screw it up I can Delete it and go back to the Previous GOOD time line recopy it and try again.
My apologies for running to quickly over this. I promise this next week's video will move a little slower, but I'm thankful that you asked this important question so I can respond. On your video tracks, from top to bottom visually, Resolve will "do", whatever the action you want to "do". To the lowest visually turned on auto select track. By default they're all on all the time. So if you copied from track 1, it will past to where it came from unless you change the auto select switch. If it came from track 1 and you want it on track to, just disable/turn off auto select on track 1 and then the lowest track with the auto select on is track 2. So Resolve pastes to track 2 instead. Please let me know if this helps you understand the basics of the the copy and paste function. I'm happy to explain further. Your feedback is very helpful. We have a wide audience of editor experience on this channel and I do hope to please as many people as possible so everyone can easily learn. And my hope is to never bore anyone with lengthy explanations when it is not too difficult to replay sections of a tutorial. I also sometimes just get excited to show things that I think are cool. One other resource I have is that I post my outlines for each video on creativevideotips.com in case it is easier to read as a resource. Audio works in reverse, but I figured that would overcomplicate the explanation.
Great video Chadwick..love your content, so here's a little tip for you..Do you have a tip to go to the timeline start in the Cut tab ? I have a shortcut that works in the edit tab but not in the cut tab..Cheers Andy
Thanks so much! wow. I appreciate it. Hey so I think you found a bug, but I do have a work around. If you don't have and in point set, the go to in point command will take you to the start of the timeline. Shift I is the default. Hope this helps. (shift O takes you to the tail of the timeline, but the actually go to end of timeline shortcut also works in that case).
I really hate when 'TEACHERS' know the subject so well the talk so Fast and make 'MOUSE CLICKS' even faster that one has to keep replaying the LESSON Spot over & over, just to understand what the 'EXPERT' is trying to say & do. Also just watching something done "Move Part of a timeline" in this case, makes little scenes without seeing the way it played Before & then after the move. Some will say they get it right away. I say "THEIR NOT Davinci Resolve BEGINNERS and this Tutorial, I thought, says for DR BEGINNERS. GOOD instructors Teach to the lowest common denominator/student in a class. JMHO Sir.
They could have done better with that annoying button. I hate how it automatically turns on and my time lines move around. Id like to permanently disable it. And it would be nice if all you had to do was click on your track to select it before pasting. Like WTF?
My apologies. Essentially this button tells resolve count me in or count me out. By default is always on and the lowest track that has it on gets priority. To start using it try copying a clip with command c. Then option click the auto select button on a higher track. The guy command v. This lets you paste to any track now instead of just where it came from.
@@CreativeVideoTips Option clicking the auto select button doesnt do anything for me except activating the track while disactivating all the others.. On a side note, I'm a super fan of your channel, as a FCP user trying to switch to Resolve... but this one got me really confused.. got way too fast and left me with the sensation that Resolve was overly complicated.. ;) But hey, that's the only time this happened with your videos... keep up the incredible work

Yes, thank you Chadwick! And that's I'm looking (and waiting) for too, an Auto select Speed Editor video.
Wow those colour titles are so beautiful
So glad I found you. I often use the shift-click combo to disable and enable all auto select at once then turn on what I want. I believe you are showing a better way.
I'm glad you are here Harold. Shift click is great. The default keyboard equivalent is option/alt F9 and option/command/ctrl F9.
You're like the Aaron Nace of Davinci Resolve. Your style and delivery is so good. Here's to a bright future in Davinci Resolve education.
Wow, I think, I have to cut it into pieces and try out the sections. Thanks for the deep insights, really appreciated.👌
I SO love your incredible tuition videos,They are AMAZING! I have earned so much from them.THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
This is the stuff that makes NLE so much better than any other system available.
I don't disagree with you Luke. Had you heard of that quick trim, or fast trim with jkl before?
@@CreativeVideoTips I used to be a broadcast support guy for Apple in my region, so much of that style of editing that is so great for news and short story cutting, I really championed for the efficiency of output, given so many of those guys are working on a 24 hour news cycle.
You’re the man!
I learned so much from this video
No Daniel, you are. Thank you so much for your support and feedback. Thanks so much for watching.
Love your content, i have learned so much from you videos!
Very helpful, thank you Chad! Commenting to help with the algorithm :)
Thanks man! You sent me here from Davinci Resolve beginners FB group!
Crikey that was a lot of information in one hit. I'll have to watch this very slowly for it to sink in. But thanks for putting this out there for your viewers Chadwick.
Thanks Martin, as Jim pointed out I probably hit the keyboard shortcuts too quickly on this one. Please ask any questions here though and I'll try to get to them.
dude, your videos are GOLD !..... keep them coming !!! congrats
Thank you so much for all you do! Life saver!!
Well done, Chadwick. There’s a lot to unpack there.
Thanks so much for watching John, yeah this is a dense one - but hopefully there is one thing you can take away and apply to your next project.
Great video more auto select tutorials video
REEEEEELY good! Thanks!
@@CreativeVideoTips that's perfect thank you. 💪
Always getting great tips/tricks here. Would love to see a video on how to best color grade a multi-cam timeline already cut "IF" you did't do it beforehand.
My 2 cents - use remote grading as much as possible.
do one video on saving project templates for 5.1 surround to be use in new project :)
Very helpful
, thank you
Glad to hear that! Thanks so much for watching.
Wow, I need to watch this again. :))
there was a lot to unpack in this one.
I learned so much in this video. Thanks man you are a ninja in this software!
Happy to help Scott. I'm curious if you had heard of the quick trim, or sometimes called fast trim feature before using JKL? I'm thinking about doing a tutorial about this as a stand alone because I think most people miss this one.
@@CreativeVideoTips no you are the first to introduce this technique. i use it all the time now.
Thank you for your tips. It's so difficult to get quality DR18 Editing tips that I can trust online.
I subscribed. You got a nice channel with lots of knowledge not the same bullsh!+ over and over. Keep up the good work. I just got resolve 18 studio
Congrats! You're going to love have the studio version and welcome to the channel. I appreciate you dude.
Great tips! Sometimes hard to understand for me caused by the mumbling =/
The fact that Davinci Resolve's timeline has vim bindings blew my mind.
Brilliant. Thank you.
Okay, I didn't understand a thing 🤣🤣🤣 but that's just me, I'm kinda new to DaVinci.
I've been using it for very basic editing and need to devote some time to study it and take advantage of your videos. I'm very interested in making more impressive videos, even a little movie 😁
Thank you.
Great to hear! I am outlining a beginner focussed series to create this fall and will be perfect for you. Thanks for being here.
I watch your videos all the time and it just occurred to me that I think we worked together in Boulder.
Aight bro thank you, 3 seconds already and I knew my problem was lol😂
I love the content!
Thanks so much!
Dude I learned a lot THANK YOU! Keep it up
Glad to hear it! Thank you so much for taking the time to encourage me. I really appreciate you Bryce.
@@CreativeVideoTips You deserve it man
Thank you so much! This is awesome!
Glad it was helpful!
Hit "V" first. And i think it's shift-v to get out of that mode and select clips again instead edit-points.
In a nutshell, it's command/control and option/alt
waited for this video without expecting to ever get it, thanks!
imma ask again……… embedded AAF export? :D
You're a genius
No, dude I just like reading manuals. I really enjoy your comparison videos Phillip.
@@CreativeVideoTips Just take the compliment! Seriously though, you're doing great work breaking down more technical aspects of editing and saving us manual- averse people the trouble. And thanks for watching
Not a criticism, just a suggestion...Can you remake this video and add tips on how to use the speed editor to accomplish these steps?
Is there a way to turn them off and on at once
you are the best, bro
Thank you so much for the kind words - I appreciate you taking the time to watch and learn.
Hi,Is it possible to avoid color shifting when I put the graded footages by Davinci Resolve back to FCPX?
absolutely - Usually this has to do with the gamma tag settings that are getting applied on your exports from Resolve. The nice thing is Final Cut makes this pretty simple because it is always managed by the mac color sync. Check out this video, the main exception is I would usually create Quicktime ProRes files to go back to final cut - ruclips.net/video/8tiF-EnTlto/видео.html
hi guy, do you know if the RX9 could be used in resolve fairlight and how to set up ? thanks
Middle Mouse Click to navigate freely in your timeline, HOW THE HELL DID I MISS THAT? lol Thank you very much
I wish Resolve had the option to auto-enable the Auto Track Selector after an edit. Most of the time you only need it for one particular operation, and after that you want all tracks to be selected again. I often have to fix sync issues because I find out too late that one track wasn't 'auto selected'. (BTW: why is it called auto tracks selector, nothing 'auto' here).
@ 2:00 I don't understand "Mark the Clip with X" Please Explain that SLOOOOOWLY. Thanks.
Thnkssss❤❤❤❤
Great tips. But I don't understand. Hope with more examples and explanation. It seems your videos are more advanced.
thanks! but my F1 to F9 does nothing, on PC
Sorry, there should be a keyboard setting on the OS level to allow the function Keys to act as function keys. I’m not sure where on windows that is.
I recognized the PM song immediately as it started playing😂😂😅
Tak!
@@CreativeVideoTips If you press the home button twice it goes to the start of the timeline ;)
Or just use FCPX.
Yep that works.
I’m definitely doing something wrong because when I click this button on a particular track and try to paste to it…it NEVER works for me. 🤨🤪🤨
Try again with hold Option/Alt while clicking and let me know what happens.
@@CreativeVideoTips thanks for replying, stand by.
@@CreativeVideoTips nope. Didn’t work
@@CreativeVideoTips told you I was doing it wrong…just saw (and paid attention) to what you wrote…”ALT” click!!!! 🤪🤪🤪 Thank you sir!
Why even have the speed editor in front of you?🤷♂️
So Auto select = Focus
Like WTF?
I didn't understand anything
My apologies. Essentially this button tells resolve count me in or count me out. By default is always on and the lowest track that has it on gets priority.
To start using it try copying a clip with command c. Then option click the auto select button on a higher track. The guy command v. This lets you paste to any track now instead of just where it came from.
@@CreativeVideoTips Option clicking the auto select button doesnt do anything for me except activating the track while disactivating all the others.. On a side note, I'm a super fan of your channel, as a FCP user trying to switch to Resolve... but this one got me really confused.. got way too fast and left me with the sensation that Resolve was overly complicated.. ;) But hey, that's the only time this happened with your videos... keep up the incredible work
Way, way too fast for me.
You always really impress me 🪄🪄
شكرا لك
Couldn’t understand the thing you were saying… At first I thought it was me but then I Showed it to three different editors and not a single person could understand what you were talking about. You certainly know your stuff but as a teacher you leave much to be desired.
thank you for the feedback - I'm sure I'll have a new auto select tutorial in the coming months
Too fast. Too much. Slow down. I’m left not understanding.
Hy there DVP, just an assumption here : t's very likely you are reading, bc the pace of your narrative is not the pace of your understanding, rather like a robotic one.
This is somewhat annoying.
