To those who have a tough time following that last tip, lemme offer a written breakdown: *Line Style* A) *Duplicate* the lineart layer. B) Apply a Gaussian Blur by a couple of pixels i) Filters ii) Blur iii) Gaussian Blur C) Set it to *Multiply* (Blend-Mode) by 30% D) *Overlap* it to the original Lineart Layer. To have the blur only on the inside of the silhouette: E) *Select* the flat colors. F) *Invert* the selection. G) *Erase* the blur on the edges of the currently selected area You can also apply a layer effect on your flat colors. H) Select Layer Effects. i) Inner Glow. ii) Hard lights. I) Pick a warm, dark color. J) Select a short spread. Done.
One more tip that really helps with digital line art is how much you turn the opacity down on the sketch layer. I find that turning the opacity down a lot helps you to see the lines you are actually drawing instead of relying on the first sketch. I used to only turn it down a bit but when I started to turn the opacity down a lot it improved my line quality and made doing line art more fun.
It helps even more if you do a first sketch in a color and your clean lines in a different one or black, so you can easily see parts you missed even when going lighter or not fully opaque in parts

I’m surprised that you don’t recommend smoothing. From what I’ve learned digital drawing is sort of too precise, mainly because of the lack of texture on the screen I think. I don’t struggle at all with traditional line work but digitally it can really be a mess if I don’t use some smoothing.
I keep hearing people say that the problem is too much precision but honestly I think it's the lack thereof. Drawing tablets are still an imperfect technology with quite a bit of jankyness and they can't quite track lines perfectly. Put a straight edge on your tablet and try to draw a slow line, you will see just how much jitter there is on drawing tablets. But the thing is, unfortunately, this is the biggest difference between premium and affordable tablets. On the high-end tablets that someone like Marc would use the jitter, while definitely still present, is much more subtle. To the point where you really can go without smoothing. Speaking personally, I currently draw mostly on a Samsung Galaxy tab s6 that uses Wacom EMR for its pen, the same tech that's in Cintiqs. And I can totally get away with no smoothing on that. But when I use my Artisul D16 that uses the same type of UC Logic digitizer you find in most affordable brands like XP-Pen I need to use smoothing to get any kind of usable line.
You can use line Smoothing, but too much you loose control of the precise line work and it makes your line too mechanical and artificial. There's some charm with imperfect lines. As you can see in the video Marc also use some slight line smoothing, like the eclipse tool for the round shapes. My opinion is to use as little Line smoothing as possible with different adjustments to case to case basis. In this video he says not use Smoothing as an advice to art students still learning so they can gain the eye-hand to pen motor coordination that is needed to be better and efficient artist. Once you became a proffessional you can use all the technique and cheats to catch the deadline, but first learn the basics.
I mean I agree and dont at the same time. Using digital art has improved my hand stability. This, in turn, seems to have benefited my consistency with traditional art. I would say, have a smoothing where you are having difficulty drawing the lines you want, but not to the point where you are doing ctrl z several time every line you make. Once you get more comfortable, then lower the smoothing.
Besides the helpful tips, your character designs always bedazzle me! As an artist, I often get art block, and Marc has creative ideas almost spilling out of his head onto the digital canvas! I disagree with removing smoothing completely, real pencils have paper resistance which sort of acts as smoothing at times, drawing on something like an ipad has a completely different feel and the stylus can slip around a lot more than a pencil does. Just my two cents :)
I think he was talking more about the people that depends on the setting for doing literally anything than specific cases Like, the big majority of pen tablets have a "shake" even if you use a ruler for drawing a straight line. My tablet for example is kinda small so i cant draw bigger lines for the life of me without the smoothing setting, its just turns into a bad very strangely shaped line, but for tablets with displays i think what he said is a hole lot more applicable.
I agree, I find setting the smoothing to around 5-10% makes it feel more like traditional drawing. I wouldn't go above 10% though. Drawing on a tablet feels very slippery compared to the grip of graphite on paper.
As someone who mainly draws with a trackpad, I find it nearly impossible to draw without line smoothing. My art program of choice also doesn't have a smoothing setting anyway.
Here's a couple questions you could probably spin off for other video ideas: 1. How to make a standing gesture look lively? Whenever I do gesture studies I try to follow the Michael Mattesi idea of gesture, where the body creates a gestural rhythm and emphasizing that makes the whole figure appear more dynamic and lively; but this idea hits a roadblock when I encounter something with little motion, its like being told to read in a language I don't understand. 2. Have you ever considered a video going over painting materials? One thing I've always been nervous about approaching is painting materials; things like leather, metal, plastics, or wood, etc. It'd be nice to have a breakdown of how to approach studying it.
lineart is always the most problematic thing when you start at drawing (even more on digital), this really helps, now i just have to focus in give a rest to my noodle arm :^) great vid!

Man, I even have to include, say, all the construction ovals for the far arm (behind the body) just to make sure the positioning works, and I've been drawing probably as long as you've been alive, LOL.
I struggle with this so much because I tend to paint over my line art alot! But hearing u in the feedback sessions say that my line work was confident makes me want to practice this more!! thanks marc!! U always upload high quality videos, easy to understand
Oh my gosh, this was literally THE most helpful line art video I have EVER WATCHED. I am not exaggerating at ALL. You have gained an instant passionate fan.
I use Clip Studio, Krita, GIMP, IbisPaint (on my Phone) and Autosketch Sketchbook, and this tutorial was VERY helpful. Thank you very much.

YOU SAVED MY LIFE me and my brothers are all artists, and they adviced me the same thing and I forgot it in the long way, then seeing your videos again even making an example of it,,,literally opened the door to pARADISE TO ME

I love these tips, my line art has been very flat lately and these help so much
I've really been struggling with lineart lately, (well along with everything else, but specifically lineart) and this has really helped me out. I'm not very good at line weight which I think is my number one problem, but all these other tips definitely help and I'm excited to try them out!
pretty clear after some practice that i needed this video
I always wondered about that inner "glow" when I looked at certain pieces, but had no clue how to effectively replicate it because I really like that addition myself. Thanks a ton!
that explosion is the true foundation of art
Your intros never fail to make me laugh! Thank you! Learning new things can be overwhelming to me so it helps me feel better before I try to analyze the content! Thank you for making and sharing all these videos too!
You have such a great style.
Thankyou so much man! This helped me out loads! :)
I like this video a lot. I definitely appreciate the organization of going down a list and talking about each thing. Thanks a lot!
I'll definitely have to wean myself off the smoothing.
Thank you! I didn't realize what I was doing was all kinds of wrong! I had no idea how to do the line weight changing. Most of the time people didn't explain it to me before so I was confused!!
There's some great advices here !
It's subtle but it's stuff I didn't thought about.
But honestly, some of this is really so subtle for me I can't really see the difference. My level isn't that high yet. If I can just sketch good enough, it would be already awesome to me. Surely that's also why I stick with abstract and simple sketching.
Anyway good job, and thanks !
CANNON SPIKE!
Great class, the very last couple of tips are really a unique touch, I can't wait to try that.
Thanks Mark. I always has been struggle with texture, but your technique with gaussian blur really helped me with that
thank you sooooo much i improved my lineart a lot !!!! Thank You
Gaussian blur on the line at. That is genius!
Super helpful! I miss the times I was in class and your videos capture that mind expanding magic that brings me back to the best parts of learning.
