Learning marketing is something I think I need more help with. I never realized how much the market affects the demand there is for your art, and simply "being good" isn't always enough. 4:36 Funny that you say that because, for the third anniversary of my childhood dog’s death, I made a digital painting of her as a memorial. I poured all of my heart into it and I myself was amazed by how beautiful it turned out. I considered it my best piece ever. However, when I posted a speedpaint of it to RUclips, it performed _worse_ than my other videos. Great insight, Marc! I'm working on improving my art foundation, especially since I'm working on producing a comic. Just started your course and it's definitely helping my approach. Thank you for everything you do!
I really need to work on a lot of these especially obsessing over technical improvement over everything else. One of my resolutions this year/going forward was to be more dynamic with poses but that's still technical and doesn't matter to non-artist viewers as much. I've always been like my dorky sci-fi characters aren't that deep but as I develop them I'm realizing they have personalities and that's at least a place to start lol Thanks Marc! Great advice!
Your "should" vs "must" argument actually finally helped me put it into perspective. Thank you! Its something I knew subconsciously but never really put into practice.
In my eyes, there’s no such thing as good and bad artists. Whether a piece of art is good or bad is completely subjective. And everyone can always get better at art, but I would never say anyone’s a “bad artist”. It’s all perspective.
My art as a kid was objectively bad compared to what it is now though. It's not all subjective. A lot of it is for sure, but it's not that simple. Most artists would likely agree, you too, their art now feels "better" to them than it did when they started with no skills. Art skills, just like any skill, get better with deliberate practice and habits. Someone with no skill is not expected to perform in any meaningful way. I couldn't get hired with my 5year old skills, couldn't make a penny selling art, wouldn't get any attention on social media or anyone other than my parents. Most people who call themselves artists want to do something with their art, whether it's a personal or professional achievement. The angle of the video is that there are steps to get there, steps to get meaningfully better and ignoring those steps (while still striving for the same achievement) leads to a dead end most of the time. Most people watching this take their art seriously and I've been teaching long enough to know everyone is doing something (or many things) at their detriment without realizing it. Hopefully these kinds of videos help them realize it so they can improve in an even more meaningful way.
so i decided to start drawing a week ago every day, instead of doing so once a month. Ive just been doing gesture drawing and portraits. Learn the rules before I break them and go for stylized art. But how do i know when im ready to transition into something more creative
I love all this advise. I know one of the biggest area I struggle with in my art is getting an emotional connect from my art. I can see putting more nostalgia into pictures.
Thanks for this list Marc. Your last point is especially resonant to me. We all will face art envy, but if you find their art so impressive then perhaps consider finding out how they created their works and try to incorporate their techniques into improve your own art. It's a better use of your energy than brooding on the fact that you're not at their level, effectively never imrpoving.
nice video! It still helped me even though I'm not as serious about art anymore and I don't post online anymore. Artists like you inspire and motivate me to still keep on drawing even though I don't have as much time anymore, keep up the good work bro!!
I have progressed so quickly with only these videos on RUclips. Can't wait to try the real class. My son and I started around Christmas together and he needs to practice his English to understand how Marc Brunet has a good teacher. But he doesn't realize how much he progressed too after each class And thank you for the free brushes they're awesome 👌 !
In the mine`s type of mood: Imma 16 years old artist, which is looking at you, Marc, and thinking: "I'm gonna pray on your picture before starting drawing. It`ll be an everyday thing tho" XD Don`t worry about my emotional stability. It`s fine, but I love to overreact on the Internet))
What I want to learn the most is to take criticism in a positive manner instead of getting mad at the critic for cussing my drawing 🤔. Why is it hard to take criticism from others without getting regret in my mind for that piece of artwork. Or frustration. How to turn frustration into positive energy to improve my self
it is hard, but what helped me early in my career was differentiating between good and bad feedback. Good critiques will give you suggestions on how to improve and point out things you already knew in the back of your head but dismissed while painting. It's still not fun to read, but it gives you something worthwhile to think about. Bad critiques will just try to be hurtful and in those cases, it's good to imagine the absolute loser who's spending their limited time on earth trying to bring you down when they probably have nothing going on for themselves. Why would you pay any attention to trash like that? Block them and carry on :)
The chapter on turning envy into motivation is pretty good advice, but when I see good art usually I think "That looks pretty cool!" and move on with my day, rather than say "I'll never get to that level" or the opposite: "I can't wait to be that good". So I guess when I see good art I don't really think how it would apply to me directly.
I don't know if this is generally a good thing to put on the list, but always studying and seeking knowledge on how realism works i think is VERY important. Sure, you can make good art and be a good artist without being able to draw a real person or animal, however, as you improve on that path you're still implying the basic structure of how our skeletal and muscle structure works.(just in a stylized way). I think it's very important to observe what is Anatomically correct in your art(and other's art) and what isn't. Seek some realism perspective, without being a realism artist yourself. Your stylized work will improve and still be your own with this knowledge.
I just wanted to say thank you!! you're such a big help to me and I am sure the art community feels the same. I have watched a good chunk of your videos and have seen a lot of improvement. It is trial and error but that is okay because I am willing to push forward. Hopefully one day I will be able to buy one of your artschool terms
I feel like pure and utter rage can be the most powerful. We have felt utter rage before, some have to control that rage and some have made mistakes using that rage unwisely. If they were to see a rageful character perhaps they would relate to it more or feel a negative or sincere way.
realised a lot people doesnt tell story and feelings through their art.. the skill I want to learn.. also I didnt prioritize what skills I MUST learn first to create awesome characters. feeling happy to notice the small improvements with anatomy Thank you Marc!! for helping everyone to become better artist
recently kinda hit the low of my life n art journey, this vids really helped me to remind myself on why I goes down with this path in the first place :)
Yay new video! This is VERY inspiring because I've hit most of these points as an artist to allow myself to create freely! The two that have EXTREMELY helped me improve is making a dedicated time for art and setting a specific goal. Mine was to learn the basics of perspective. I haven't even finished the course yet and I'm still learning so much!
I like what Marc said about your upbringing because as I was starting my art journey I was weighed by envy when looking for good inspiration and it mostly motivated me and I made a short term goal to not let this bring me down but pull me up so envy is a great source of inspiration for me tho I gotta work on the other stuff lol
Thanks man! I like that your honest but also encouraging people to do better, and that’s why I’m here, goal is to express lore I’ve created in a visual format, so I wanna expand my abilities. I post all my stuff on Instagram haha some not so great others decent
I've been so focused on drawing from imagination when that light bulb hits that I didn't stop to think about the things on this list. Well. I guess I need to learn and improve more. Thanks Marc, looking forward to the next one.
I'm a bad artist but I always aim to be a good artist :) After all being a good artist can be subjective but I hope to be an inspiration and motivation to other growing artists regardless
Somehow these videos are sometimes demotivating for me haha. Guess I'm a "bad artist" because I don't want to do these things 😅 Not sure I like viewing art as good or bad etc.. art is art. Its self expression, its a hobby, its a career, it depends who you are and what you want. So one person's actions as an artist may be "bad" if they were aiming to be a professional artist in an industry, but "good" if they want to draw something they love & just bring themselves joy. That kinda thing. Idk, its all good advice for sure! It just feels a little odd to me. But thats just me by the looks of the rest of the comments lol (No hate to you Marc, your content is awesome! Both art-wise and video tips & tricks wise etc! Love your stuff and your positive attitude. 😁)
The hardest part for me is probably to find a goal/aim when doing art. As an almost 30 y.o. personally whose career has nothing to do with art, I just do it because I enjoy it and I want to make pretty things. That's all. My goal is to be able to draw what I imagine, and sometimes it's a character, sometimes it's a landscape. I just want to ✨️make✨️pretty✨️things✨️
I will be taking this course, I just finished a course from another artist that I won't name and felt like I didn't learn enough and been planning to take your course. Its my birthday month and with the price drop it would stupid not take this unintentional birthday gift lol!
I also feel like another way someone can be a bad artist is if they're are being negative about their own art or art abilities towards their friends. For example if you have a friend who is constantly saying "I'll never get better" or "I can't get commissions like you can". Having that negative mindset can effect the person it's being focused on as well as other around them who may end up feeling the same way. Kinda like a link chain of negative emotions and doubt towards their own skill. It can be that person saying it once or constantly saying it over and over whenever they show their art to you or in a open space like discord or other social medias. I just feel we as artists should learn to be more positive about our art and self-worth as an artist and learn not to spread the negativity to others who aspire to reach their goals or make goals for themselves.
Beside the Advertisement, it seems I am on the right track. There are just some obstacles I need to climb over. I've learn so much from my friends in both Japan and Korea. I wish I could show you the Uniquely odd problem I am struggling with as an artist but the Artificial Intelligence maintaining the site will mistake it as something malevolent.
man i'm struggling. got to keep fighting. got a schedule. got to stick to it or make it work. How much worth do i see in improving my art? the question makes me shudder. got to keep at it. it's possible.
I think pain is stronger than grief, when we see another human in terrible pain a primal part of us gets activated.. but thats negative. A positive strong emotion in my opinion is arousal, but that's not suitable for most pieces. Laughter might also work but less effectively.
So i'm a middle artist i think.^^ I do most a the things you talked about, but all the social staff is through my personality still really difficult for me. Well something i have to improve i guess.^^ Thx for the Lesson Marc😉

Thanks for the classes… just took up drawing a couple of months ago and I think I’ve come a long way.
Great advice!
the best art teacher
So combine expressionism, knowledge of fundamentals and passion to be a good artist.
so i decided to start drawing a week ago every day, instead of doing so once a month.
I have been jumping my attention from your voice to how you painted her 🤩we didn't saw much paintings of yours here for a while.
I didn't do much painting last year, mostly focused on lvling up my line drawing and studies, but it's good to get back at it :)
I`m doing art for almost a year now, and that vid really helped, to motivate me even more to being a pro some day. Thanks :D
But he doesn't realize how much he progressed too after each class
And thank you for the free brushes they're awesome 👌 !
@@YTartschool thanks for the advice , I must ignore bad feedback since it doesn't improve my artwork .and appreciate good feedback
I love that you check all of your comments. ❤
If they were to see a rageful character perhaps they would relate to it more or feel a negative or sincere way.
realised a lot people doesnt tell story and feelings through their art..
the skill I want to learn..
also I didnt prioritize what skills I MUST learn first to create awesome characters.
feeling happy to notice the small improvements with anatomy
Thank you Marc!! for helping everyone to become better artist
Love is the most strong emotion
heartbreak (grief) is wayyyy stronger son, that's why most popular songs are about heartbreaks ;)
Thank you for everything you're doing,as a (I hope) future artist, helps me a ton
This is some solid advice, Marc! Younger/emerging artists should definitely take your advice here to heart.
Holy crap marc, thank you soooo much for adding subs man, never remembered i needed em
Very good info. Perfect timing as well. Thanks.
Oh my god I'm guilty of ALL OF THEM (except the last one. Been trying to expand to other spaces to share art.)
2:25, And that's why I find animated characters more attractive than real people
recently kinda hit the low of my life n art journey, this vids really helped me to remind myself on why I goes down with this path in the first place :)
✨🗿👍🏻 you always know what we want
the painting is looking awesome!! Also, I think having a positive mindset about art is the best habit that most good artists have
Yay new video!
Easy-peasy to figure the problems out by watching you tutorials. I hope i can put that into practice.
I like what Marc said about your upbringing because as I was starting my art journey I was weighed by envy when looking for good inspiration and it mostly motivated me and I made a short term goal to not let this bring me down but pull me up so envy is a great source of inspiration for me tho I gotta work on the other stuff lol
Thanks Marc, I could always use the words of encouragement
it's great to see a process of you coloring for a change! I hope to check all the boxes in the future ♥
Shame would probably beat grief I would say. Though grief is still extremely powerful.
I'm a bad artist but I always aim to be a good artist :) After all being a good artist can be subjective but I hope to be an inspiration and motivation to other growing artists regardless
this entire video really sliced me deep and left a huge flesh wound 😵
thank you mark for the great videos
after watching you for years, I finally bought your art school program just now. lets see if I can finally get good
Dude this helps a LOT.
Thanks Marc
Somehow these videos are sometimes demotivating for me haha. Guess I'm a "bad artist" because I don't want to do these things 😅 Not sure I like viewing art as good or bad etc.. art is art. Its self expression, its a hobby, its a career, it depends who you are and what you want. So one person's actions as an artist may be "bad" if they were aiming to be a professional artist in an industry, but "good" if they want to draw something they love & just bring themselves joy. That kinda thing. Idk, its all good advice for sure! It just feels a little odd to me. But thats just me by the looks of the rest of the comments lol
(No hate to you Marc, your content is awesome! Both art-wise and video tips & tricks wise etc! Love your stuff and your positive attitude. 😁)
Marc could you do a vid about the construction fundamental plz??!¡???!!!
I mean, he has already
Thanks for this, Marc! ❤
-"YOU NEED A DESTINATIONS BEFORE SET SAILS" , THANKS FOR THAT
Estamos aqui meu lindo 🫶
My fav artist always motivational!! I'm gonna try practicing my shading more and more
Keep up the great work Senpai! 🙇♂️
When Marc uploads you know we will be getting very great advice from him! ❤️🙏
Perhaps I would add another... 11. HAVE FUN WITH IT.
Thanks dude.
The best art chanel on RUclips??....after watching some of your videos...i agree... I'm here to learn
Your beard really suits you well 😁 Also awesome teaching we cannot find anywhere else except here as usual!
Great video! I used to watch your videos 8 years ago, and just rediscovered some of your tips as I'm working to become an artist full-time :)
thx for making me feel super old lol
@@YTartschool Makes me feel a little old too XD
This list is so true omg
thanks to this channel and marc, every week I am always motivated
Beside the Advertisement, it seems I am on the right track.
There are just some obstacles I need to climb over.
I've learn so much from my friends in both Japan and Korea.
I wish I could show you the Uniquely odd problem I am struggling with as an artist but the Artificial Intelligence maintaining the site will mistake it as something malevolent.
man i'm struggling. got to keep fighting. got a schedule. got to stick to it or make it work. How much worth do i see in improving my art? the question makes me shudder. got to keep at it. it's possible.
Awesomeness sir. Stay awesome 🔥🔥🔥🔥😭😭🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾💯💯💯💯
Dunno if it's been said already, but even your 'Bad Arist' drawings in the thumbnails are really charming.
Ваші поради дуже допомагають, дякую😊
I think pain is stronger than grief, when we see another human in terrible pain a primal part of us gets activated.. but thats negative.
A positive strong emotion in my opinion is arousal, but that's not suitable for most pieces. Laughter might also work but less effectively.
So i'm a middle artist i think.^^ I do most a the things you talked about, but all the social staff is through my personality still really difficult for me. Well something i have to improve i guess.^^ Thx for the Lesson Marc😉
4:37 Fear.
there. I won right? this was a contest right?
Noooo I'm late! Sorry teach, been struggling with motivation but will watch the class with extra attention 🙏🏽 Keep staying awesome as always 🙂
