I recently had someone reach out to me out of the blue to make their character for them. I am 47. Loved drawing as a child but never thought I was good enough. I just picked it up in the past year and am loving it! It is never too late. 20 years will pass no matter what. May as well do something you want to do during them.
Im 65. When I was young & in school, my father said "there is no money in art, study to do a 'real' job". I was not allowed to take "the frivolous expense" of art classes in school. The problem at least from personal experience is that I see a lot of my classmates at university that go for art education tend to be the least hardworking ones. They kinda just pick it because its "easier "and they tend to be the ones to have weaker knowledge of the fundamentals and skill(cus they don't practice). Which saddens me because I think to myself, really? this is the level that middle/high school student will get as professors. I personally considered art education as a career path but I am not good with kids nor have patience. This definitively does not apply everywhere just speaking from my personal experience. I can't find anything "peopleless" or stress free so I'm trying to discover what works for me while freelancing right now, and all seems very dependent or good marketing and algorithms that I'm trying to use in my favor...
Hey so something about medical illustration that you didnt mention: you have to have graduated from a credited medical illustration course at a university to get work in that field all with very small class sizes that people come from all over the world to attend. There was, last I checked, about 12 of these courses in North America all with small class sizes. To quality for these courses you'll need prerequisites such as university Physiology 101 and Biology 101. It is EXTREMELY rare for a person from a purely artistic background to become a medical illustrator, usually its taken up by med students. This is all information that I got from a meeting with the University of Toronto's medical illustration head about ten years ago so some of it may be misremembered or outdated.
I am a current STEM college student looking to switch my major to art and this really helps me wrap my head around what an illustrator is and makes me more confident to actually pursue my art :)
Um so, I have social anxiety, I work in retail (really bad). My dream is to just create art and get paid for it, an illustrator. I never think I am good enough though. I don't have a good enough portfolio nor can I be consistent enough to get follows due to retail draining my life source :'D I feel so stuck and like I am just a complete lost soul walking around in limbo. Not to mention I have a degree in concept art, and ended up in retail, thanks art school. ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Hi there! I also work in retail part-time, and I often feel like I'm not good enough to even have people like my art, let alone pay me for it. But I keep drawing and painting and putting my work on my blog and social media, even when I can't help thinking "wow, this is bad". And people saw my work and I've gotten projects from that. I promise you, even when you don't like your own work, someone will. Just keep making it and sharing it. Best of luck!
Your'e not alone. Drawing my whole life, but never pursued it due to pressure finishing university. Ended up in banking, but still addicted to illustrating. After so many people telling me I should be a professional I'm going to give it my best shot. I agree with the 'lost soul' part. I think for people like us if you are not illustrating/drawing you just don't feel like your self.
I just want to say I glad I being an illustrator student in a good illustration shcool. They not only teach me how to e a good artist but also how to survive and selling yourself as an artist. They teach me how to be a freelancer too.
Just started my art journey (Day 99 so far )and this video really inspired me to get better at my art so I can become a freelance illustrator in the next few years thank you.
I’m still trying to stop procrastinating about watching your digital art video so I can get things running in high gear. IM ALREADY SUBBED I SWEAR STAPH IT. UR SO HANDSOME IM TRYIINNNMMG
Post every day? For illustration? I could use some help on this part, do you mean illustrations or just like a motivational text or what? It takes me like 15 hours to finish an illustration and I'm still not liking it haha. Love your work man, and I love your videos, much information!
The more you practice, the faster you will become. In the mean time, you can post wip's/processes or just post as often as you can until it eventually becomes daily.
Posting on social media every day does not mean posting complete illustrations every day. They can just be WIPs, less complex drawings, or even studies, doodles, or concept art. Pretty much anything as long as it’s art-related. Posting art every day on social media is not so much for fishing for potential jobs and clients (that’s what the portfolio is for), but more for raising your engagement and reach so that the algorithm favors you and shows your art to more people. The more people see your art, the more followers you get, and more followers mean that more people know who you are and you will end up getting more traffic to your portfolio, website, commission info, etc.
Doesn't need to be a polished painting! Look at my IG I post mostly studies and quick sketches and only once in a while I might drop a bigger painting or the steps leading to the finished painting. Just gotta figure out a way to break up your progress in clear steps you can post about. (my last drawing coloring tutorial ruclips.net/video/Wvng0oPkNy4/видео.html breaks the process with this exact thing in mind!) If you don't post every day - like every other day for example - your account will still grow but it's like 25% as effective, exactly like what I'm experiencing now since I haven't been posting as regularly in October! I've had many of these cycles and it's always the same. The difference posting every day makes is crazy.
I’m currently in online school for an associates in illustration. I’m trying to better myself and practice more. It’s hard and frustrating but I hope to be as amazing as you one day. I’m just scared I won’t be good enough
Thx that helped alot i like you advices and your tutorials !😄♥️ Can you do a tutorial about High and low angle Perspective (male , female) please? Thank you 🙏💫
This is stirring something in me long thought dead. I dropped out of art school from lack of confidence and running out of money. Gave art up completely. I feel so out of the game it seems overwhelming to jump back in.
All my parents ever said was "don't be an artist because it doesn't make you any money" and it really caused my anxiety to skyrocket. It didn't help that I had no idea what art jobs were like, so this video was extremely helpful. Thanks for making it!!!
Hi, I just wanted to tell you that you're videos and tutorials have been a big help for me. Im also a Canadian that came to the USA though I came for my husband. I always loved art and after many years (and some maturing mentally) Im trying to sharpen my skills and learn how to break into the art world. Thank you for doing these videos and helping myself and others get the skills and confidence to persue their dreams.
I don’t wanna be an illustrator. I wanna be a concept artist. But learning new things never hurt anybody. Also if it’s a new video by Marc, of course I’m gonna watch it👍🏼
Obviously I don't want to sound pleased about the art school statistics or anything (i'm not trust me) but i'm kinda glad how reassuring you were about getting into illustration without having done art school itself. I'm doing English at Uni currently, but my kinda dream job is to do illustrations and maybe freelance a little. Everyone was pretty shocked that I wanted to do English instead because apparently I do have some talent in art, but I was going though a rough time when making my choice so this is where I ended up. I try and do drawings every other day or so, and i've been watching tons of videos on digital art (it's a new medium for me) so hopefully i'll get there one day. Thanks for the help!
Awesome video, this was exactly what I needed today. I've been focusing on mostly portrait work the past 2-3 years, but this gives me a great idea of what direction to push towards next.
I feel like I wouldn’t be able to produce ideas frequently enough to become a concept artist so illustration might actually be best for me. Illustrations have always inspired me and are probably the majority of the reason why I’m interested in art!
I get very excited with every piece for your Chroma Island project! I will love to see the development of the lore! And of course I always learn from all your videos!! Excellent job!!
Love all your videos and content. Always a pleasure to watch through them and learn. (Kinda a broad statement, but you cover so much information. LOL!) P.S. I would love to see a video of the fundementals of "what makes a good illustration; storytelling, single/group characters, what to think about and setup. " (Looking through your videos to see if this already exists.) Thanks for your content!
Thank you so much for the great tips, as an Arabic illustrator working as freelancer in the Middle East its kind of hard thing, because it's a new industry on Arab countries , and also it's hard to travel far away if I want a job outside of the country, will yeah! I guess I have to work on my portfolio and develope my marketing to get a chance to work ✨🌷
Thank you for your videos, Marc, I really enjoy watching your videos cuz the way you talk and what you talk always give me inspiration, even tho I'm not sure if I want to be a professional artist, I know that I want to be an artist, I want to make my own art for my self and for that I need to git gud, so thanks a lot! That way I can always keep pushing myself further to become more of a person that I'd like to be
Hi Marc. Keep up the awesome work. A couple of months back you put out a timetable for artists trying to improve. Could you go through that timetable and give demonstrations of how you would do these studies/ exercises?
This makes me genuinely happy everybody tells me to not make art as a career it's really bad but this opened my eyes that I can make my art as a career even if it's not in like an AAA company even for a small company I can still make some money lol
Great video again, you definitely always encourage me to continue persuing my dream to become an professional illustrator and i even got my first comission 2 weeks ago. Thanks for putting up a lot of amazing content and keep up the great work :)
Thank for posting this. I've been trying to get as much info before I start approaching studios. I know it's going to be a hard slog to get work but I've put this off in my life for too long .
Incredibly informative, and surprisingly encouraging even though I feel challenged as well. I owe youtube illustrators like you and others a lot, you showed me that a career as an illustrator is actually very possible if you know what steps you need to take. Also I need to revamp my portfolio 😹 thanks for the reminder.
Man, that was inspirational, I hope someday I reach your level of art and of understanding the business. Thank you for the upload, I needed that in a way.
If you need to relocate, do the company helps you in anyway? Does it depend on the company? What are some credentials they look for in your resume? Or should I just worrying with having a good portfolio? I just started, I'm working taking commissions for now, my old pc doesn't handle photoshop so I only use firealpaca at the moment, I don't have any credentials I could put in a website like artstation or behance other than my drawings, would a company be interested only by looking at my portfolio? Is there anyway I could present myself better to catch a company's interest? Good to know not going to an art school wasn't the end of the world :p Thanks for the great video and channel!
You know, i had a shitty day today because of my coworker from a job that I don’t even like. I gave up trying to work as an illustrator because I got rejected a lot trying to find a job in this field. Your video got me motivated again, and I’m considering to even join your artschool. I really don’t want to die one day regretting that I die along with my dream, so hopefully your videos can help me get better and motivated as an artist so I could just quit my job and do my dream job. Thank you very much for the videos. Definitely gonna subscribe 😄
about ARTSCHOOL, It's my first year as a college art atudent. The school is darn expensive and it doesn't even tackle fundamentals/basics much but just plain work load of high school-like project making. And I don't think I could last there for four more years. I'm planning on stopping college the next school year and attend ARTSCHOOL instead. I guess I kind of wanted assurance that this will be a right choice for my future as an illustrator...
Sorry to hear that, it's so frustrating because it's so common. ART School would definitely help though, that I'm 100% confident about and I'd be honored to count you as one of my students and have you join the crazy gang. The program covers everything you'd need to improve as fast as possible, build a killer portfolio and start earning from your art. It's all I wish I personally had back when I was just starting, but didn't exist then. (If anything you're lucky to be realizing the program you're in currently isn't for you, better now than 3-4 years into it!) Don't hesitate if you have any other questions about it!
I already have a story in my mind I just need to learn illustration after which I'll participate in manga drawing contest to become a assistant to a mangaka for experience after I think I've reached my prime I'll publish my own manga
I’ve always wanted to be a concept artist or an illustrator BUT then I went to a precollege program then I started to think that it wasn’t for me, but I wasn’t sure so I applied to schools anyway, then I got in and now I’m fully sure that this isn’t the career that was meant for me, I mean I like drawing and art but not enough where I have to draw a few hours a day , I like it more as a hobby rather then I full on career
Thank you so much for everything! I've seen your videos for a short time and they have help me so much!! I didn't even knew what I wanted to do in the art field, know I know I want to be an illustrator, I am thinking on joining your school program, if I get the 500 dollars program (is the one that I can afford 🙈) , will I get feed back from you? Thank you so much
Thanks for considering the program Rose! For feedback, that would be the ART School +Feedback option instead :) The content is the same, but the feedback version comes with weekly feedback over a full year.
Not me playing the “you don’t need an art degree part” out loud in front of my mom for some sort of validation and to not seem like a complete failure 🙈🙈

I find working with people very stressful, in fact, that's one of the reasons why I'm trying to work with art instead of looking for any other job (which is were I failed for almost 10 years). I can't find anything "peopleless" or stress free so I'm trying to discover what works for me while freelancing right now, and all seems very dependent or good marketing and algorithms that I'm trying to use in my favor...
Have someone be your middle man
The overusage of the explosion effect always pleases me XD
thank you for always demystifying these career fields - it helps not feel so overwhelmed when pursuing a career as an illustrator :)
I don't have a good enough portfolio nor can I be consistent enough to get follows due to retail draining my life source :'D
I feel so stuck and like I am just a complete lost soul walking around in limbo. Not to mention I have a degree in concept art, and ended up in retail, thanks art school.
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Hello we should be friends because we are the same exact person in the same exact situation :^)
@@16ShiningUmbreon aw I'm sorry you're in the same situation as me, it's not a good place to be :'))
@@perevision Thats so true, you never know what people gravitate too.
I just want to say I glad I being an illustrator student in a good illustration shcool.
They not only teach me how to e a good artist but also how to survive and selling yourself as an artist.
They teach me how to be a freelancer too.
thank you the difference between concept art and illustrator was very vital to me thx
I genuinely love your art style for girls, wow❤️
Just started my art journey (Day 99 so far )and this video really inspired me to get better at my art so I can become a freelance illustrator in the next few years thank you.
Your vids are very very helpful and inspiring too!! It helps a lot!!❤❤
I truly see Marc as a good art teacher, thanks for teaching us Marc!
I’m still trying to stop procrastinating about watching your digital art video so I can get things running in high gear. IM ALREADY SUBBED I SWEAR STAPH IT. UR SO HANDSOME IM TRYIINNNMMG
the part of publishing daily on social media is difficult, there are days when I don't know what to publish
oh I never said it was easy, that's the catch! ;) It works magic if you do it, but it's hard to stay consistent! Consistency wins though!
I wonder what will be the next thing.... post in every hour?
(my last drawing coloring tutorial ruclips.net/video/Wvng0oPkNy4/видео.html breaks the process with this exact thing in mind!)
If you don't post every day - like every other day for example - your account will still grow but it's like 25% as effective, exactly like what I'm experiencing now since I haven't been posting as regularly in October! I've had many of these cycles and it's always the same. The difference posting every day makes is crazy.
@@YTartschool thanks for the reply! I've been doing once a week but I'll try to bump it up with studies and wips!
Please make a tutorial on creating your amazing brush! THANK YOU FOR YOUR CHANNEL
Would love to have some of those brushes but i draw on krita, it didn't stop me from leaving a like
I’m currently in online school for an associates in illustration. I’m trying to better myself and practice more. It’s hard and frustrating but I hope to be as amazing as you one day. I’m just scared I won’t be good enough
Great video thank you. Currently I'm a graphic designer but am very interested in illustration, this video helped a lot
Came here for the intro, wasn't disappointed. Stayed for the content, again, wasn't disappointed. Cheers, man!
Thx that helped alot i like you advices and your tutorials !😄♥️
Can you do a tutorial about High and low angle Perspective (male , female) please? Thank you 🙏💫
This is stirring something in me long thought dead. I dropped out of art school from lack of confidence and running out of money. Gave art up completely. I feel so out of the game it seems overwhelming to jump back in.
Tbh I wanna be a concept artist and a illustrator cuz I LOVE character design and I also wanna make drawings and paintings
That FFX music at the end of the vids always makes me so happy ☺️
That game dev map thingie was a really helpful tool , thanks a lot Marc! :D
All my parents ever said was "don't be an artist because it doesn't make you any money" and it really caused my anxiety to skyrocket. It didn't help that I had no idea what art jobs were like, so this video was extremely helpful. Thanks for making it!!!
Genuine, yes, I love it
Hi, I just wanted to tell you that you're videos and tutorials have been a big help for me. Im also a Canadian that came to the USA though I came for my husband. I always loved art and after many years (and some maturing mentally) Im trying to sharpen my skills and learn how to break into the art world. Thank you for doing these videos and helping myself and others get the skills and confidence to persue their dreams.
You taught me something new. How to color with the lasso tool. Thank you.
Could you do an in-dive painting in Krita like a tutorial? Would love to see you doing it for us low-key digital artists. ^_^
I don’t wanna be an illustrator. I wanna be a concept artist. But learning new things never hurt anybody. Also if it’s a new video by Marc, of course I’m gonna watch it👍🏼
Thank u so much for posting this!
I love Marc... he is insane...
When will the world building episodes return...can't wait for it😁....
Thanks for this video, such a great help.
This channel has made me love blowing things up
Awesome video, this was exactly what I needed today.
I love your art style Marc, it fits more realistic proportions and looks amazing ❤️
Thanks!!
Man I'm so amazed from art.
Thanks a million, Marc. Mad grateful for the information. Stay solid.
That way I can always keep pushing myself further to become more of a person that I'd like to be
I am scared now you said 10% and all of this, but I'll keep trying until I can live of it! Mark my words
One day i would go through all your videos just for first 10 seconds to see every intro u've ever made :D :D
I just love how you’re intros are with you popping in your art XD
Your intros are getting so well done and are hilarious. Awesome work Marc! XD
Thanks I have learned a lot from your little art videos 🙏 🙏🙏🙏
Thank you.
This video was super helpful! Thanks Marc
Thank you for thisss ♥
Thank you so much for your videos. Also your art is gorgeous, the art style is awesome and it makes me feel nostalgic 😌
Oh my gosh thank you!
hahahah Those Intros man... *chef kiss
thanks for the infos!
Is this "So you want to be a soldier" scenario?
Man, that was inspirational, I hope someday I reach your level of art and of understanding the business. Thank you for the upload, I needed that in a way.
I love the madlad things I learn
I love your eyes and I admire you so bad.
To me you are the best and more human illustrator
thank you for the tips on portfolio building!
Good to know not going to an art school wasn't the end of the world :p
Thanks for the great video and channel!
Definitely gonna subscribe 😄
this video is awesome, thanks man is really enlightening
about ARTSCHOOL, It's my first year as a college art atudent.
(If anything you're lucky to be realizing the program you're in currently isn't for you, better now than 3-4 years into it!)
Don't hesitate if you have any other questions about it!
I already have a story in my mind I just need to learn illustration after which I'll participate in manga drawing contest to become a assistant to a mangaka for experience after I think I've reached my prime I'll publish my own manga
solid advice - thank you
its always the best advice from you sir marc! ❤️
Great video! Thanks for the tips XD
I’ve always wanted to be a concept artist or an illustrator BUT then I went to a precollege program then I started to think that it wasn’t for me, but I wasn’t sure so I applied to schools anyway, then I got in and now I’m fully sure that this isn’t the career that was meant for me, I mean I like drawing and art but not enough where I have to draw a few hours a day , I like it more as a hobby rather then I full on career
this video will change illustrators lives, "marc" my words xdddddddddddddddd
Thanks, very inspiring😀
seria tão bom se tivessem legendas, em português especialmente.. seria um sonho :')
Very informative. Thanks for such a thorough explanat-
You're very wel-
Thank you so much for everything!
More AWESOMEness 💖💖💖💖🔥🔥🔥🔥⭐⭐⭐⭐
Thank you man. This is very helpful. Also it made me feel better about me spamming FB groups with my art almost everyday;p
Not me playing the “you don’t need an art degree part” out loud in front of my mom for some sort of validation and to not seem like a complete failure 🙈🙈
Happy to help lol ;)
