Here we go lads finally done with this one - I put together everything I learned from studying Japanese artists for the past 3-4 months, hope it helps! 😤😤 Also 35% OFF cgart.school until March 31 2024 ONLY!
Hey Marc, with the Art course if I were to get it now, can I start it a few months after? I know you said you can do it in your own pace I just wanted a clarification just to be sure haha. Also amazing video! I've been trying to get better at cel shading in the digital medium lately.
I'm severely colorblind which has always made art very difficult for me. I put it down for a long time due to getting frustrated and not knowing how to continue. Would this cause issues if I took your course? I've put art off for a long time because I wasn't sure how I'd be able to work though a course such as yours once color came into play. I figured I'd reach out because it looks awesome but wanted to see hit you up first to get your feedback. Thanks!! 🤘🤘
I've been trying to replicate cell shading for a project and this helped a ton. Thanks for the amazing tutorials Marc Also RIP Akira Toriyama, the goat
hi can i ask you what is exactly cell shading (since i am a total beginner) but i think it s a style of shading right ? and is there other kind of shading ?
@@linnnnne "Cel-shading" is just replicating the "style" of painting you see in animated shows. In those days they drew in "celluloid" sheets (cels) for every frame and then hand painted them with solid colors, hence the term.
@@linnnnne You can do cross hatching, shading with black and white, pointillism… lots of things. Every artist has a slightly different shading style, pretty much.
I can't believe that as a hobbyist for over an decade....I didn't know how to use goddamn clipping mask until today. WTF. I used to just lock the layer and draw on it or do another layer and set it to multiply and such....my mind is blown.
I love this piece. I was just appreciating yesterday Bulma and Goku's friendship over the years, and so many years it's been! Thank you for sharing this guide, your lovely artwork and skills, and thank you Akira Toriyama for these amazing characters who are pretty much like old friends to us at this point!
CELL SHADING 2.0! LETS GOOOOO! I super duper over 9,000 power level! Love this coloring style man and I am eager to use all that I learn and apply them all to my current drawing pieces!
Marc you may not even read this but you consistently always give me hope, I know it sounds silly but after watching your videos I always want to get back into drawing. I may not be able to pay for your art school but I'm happy to be a student here on youtube. Thank you so much.
Aspiring artist here, just watched half of this video and am sitting here in amazement at how “simple” it can be. I always struggled with choosing colors for shadows and never knew about clipping mask so I’m excited to try these new techniques out and apply it to my drawings. Thanks 🙏
that's been my main coloring style for years, i find it helps me maintain a reasonably correct rendering without getting lost in the nitty-gritty of the shading, which often make me lose focus. Plus, it takes me far less time to render this way (for obvious reasons) hence allowing me to make a lot more artworks. One thing that works for me is, instead of shadowing dropping the base color but using no fusion modes, i'll use a indigo or magenta-wine color (a dark, slightly desaturated purple basically) as my base shadow color on a clipped layer set to multiply and around 50% opacity (though it varies based on what i need the shadows to do)
Thank you so much for this tutorial! This helped a huge ton here! I might have broken a wall thanks to you ^_^ Also RIP Akira Toriyama, wherever he is he must be smiling upon this tutorial :)
I love Anime Cel Shade Style, but im really suck at lighting and shadow. I followed your shading tutorial but I'm still bad at it😭 Please make more tutorial, Thank you❤
Then after you added a secondary light source, extra background elements shown in your previous bg vid, and extra highlights particularly in the glasses and eyes? There’s for sure a lot of technical skill built up over time here as well as with shading forms and composition, but just looking at the coloring alone, didn’t look to bad. Awesome.
hi, I found a much quicker way. Instead of clipping the shadow layer to each layer one by one. try to put all base color in a folder, than create a shadow layer that clipping on the WHOLE folder. After painting the shadow with blue color. Then copy and paste the shadow into each color, and you can adjust it to whatever color you want. In this way you can paint the shadow as a whole, the shapes and forms are much easier to be managed. Hopes this help!
okay but seeing your flats, it still looks good for what it is. I think maybe I find my coloring sucks, even with flats, because I haven't solidified the sketch enough. which brings me to my other issue: when my sketch/base becomes too cleaned up and lined well, I feel like it's lost it's charm.
Does clip studio paint also have the outer glow layer style option somewhere? It really adds some ✨️spice✨️ to the drawing and I wanna do that for my own art😳
Rip to the GOAT. Small thing I noticed is that Bulma's eyes aren't completely coloured white. The very small bits of it close to the nose and at the end of the eyeball is the same colour as her skin (like how Krillin's eyes are drawn). Dk if that's intentional or not but still a W drawing
i think i'm more or less able to choose proper highlights and shadow colors. Most pieces i do i start off completely trash though and ass i progress through it my workflow gets faster and better because i'm pretty decent at choosing complimentary colors. My main problem though is i really SUCK at finding a base color lmao, especially when i'm doing portrait studies. How do you choose an appropriate base color?

That outer glow effect on the highlight is such a neat trick! I would have never thought of that.
I know right ?? I never knew it was there I’m sooo happy cuz this will definitely play a big role in the render now
This was really helpful on info for cell shading, and just the base drawing alone is so clean. This came out so beautiful!
Wonderful tribute to Toriyama sensei and Dragon Ball and also a wonderful lesson. Thank you

Yeah it's a simple recipe to use as a starting point, from there add your own spices :)

That young Bulma and adult Goku came about through Shenron's wish.
Oh Yes! That was the finished point in cel shading what I needed. Thank you so much 先生。

C'est un bel hommage pour cet artiste qui a marqué au moins trois générations....

Love it can´t wait to try it out
Ty
awesome as usual
You're videos are calming to look at, it'd be amazing if u did a real time video
Is the layer structure something like this?
Layer 1: flat colours
Layer 2: darker shadows (multiply)
Layer 3: softer shadows (overlay)
Layer 4: highlights (overlay)
Rip to the GOAT.

Great drawing ✌
Marc says _"not using layer modes" "just keep it easy!"_
Color Theory on my brain: *- gets the first flight into the forgetfulness department*

My main problem though is i really SUCK at finding a base color lmao, especially when i'm doing portrait studies. How do you choose an appropriate base color?
Ver DragonBall no seu estilo foi maravilhoso.
Thank you ❤
I want this as a print so bad. 😣
