I am not a logger, or a sawyer, or even a wood worker. I’ve got no idea how I stumbled on to these videos. That being said I’ve watched a bunch of them, your videos are so damned relaxing. I love seeing the wood hidden by these logs. Your accent reminds me of southern Illinois where I lived part of my youth. Keep up the great work and fantastic videos.

Two things. 1st, I've been bit! I've always loved wood, but seeing sawmill slabs has ignited my passion for doing the same. Thank you for that! I appreciate your sincere love for what you're doing and how you share it in such a clear, and unadulterated manner. I think I've devoured *most* of your content in the course a few days! We're all fighting the latest designer cootie here atm... 2ndly - I'm guilty of having gone out in public in my pjs. I work 12hrs a day, 7 days a week (from 1900-0700), and if the dog needs to go out (I live in a suburb atm - just bought 10+ac. of raw land though sooo), or the kids need something - i'm up, i'm clean, I handle it - yes it might be AM for you, but its PM for us night shifters - and I'm typically back to bed to get ready for the next 12hrs. I'm lucky if I get 4-5hrs. of sleep on a *GOOD* day, and i'm not about to waste any of it swapping clothes around just to appease another's JUDGMENT of me. Of course, if I have an appointment, or its a planned outing I wear street clothes, but for an impromptu outing, i'm not bothering most times. Not sure if that comes off as "lazy", but its my life - one I work hard for! "Judge not lest ye be judged" comes to mind. Keep up the awesome content and thanks again! Peace.

It's been down for a year and a half+ and some limbs I cut off are really spalted and colored up! Still solid everywhere and looks like it could give up some beautiful wood! I would like to have huge live edge slabs but I fear it would not show off the figure except for a slab or two. Do you have a opinion on this?

We have pajama people in Oz too, bogans in ugg boots and I feel sorry for them. They've never had the experience of a passion where almost every effort is a privilege. We're the lucky ones. I worked quite a lot in the Western Savings/B of A tower in Mesa Az over the past years. The 15th floor was occupied by a large law firm back in the day. The whole suite was finished in mahogany with 12" crown, 8" base, matching casing & crotch mahogany door panels & so much more! All of it perfectly fitted & finished. More than likely a $1,000,000+ job even back then. Beautiful job, they should be SO proud! Wood is amazing & people who don't work with it have no clue. Great job bro!😉👍
I answered a craigslist ad once for a couple peices of wood one was a short slab of what I figured was some blue pine or some cheap buggy stuff. It turned out to be 10/4 walnut with some crotch figure and a void where the two branches came apart and reconnected its 19 inches by 25 inches. The other piece looks to be mahogany it's 4/4 28 inches long and 14 inches wide. They were both free off craigslist! I don't have access to a mill all the time but I do have a buddy with one so we mill some stuff hear and there when I find a tree or some logs I get half of what we mill. I love watching your videos you got a great thing going on!

The entire thing was one camera and the only editing was putting the video he was watching split-screen with him. Holy cow! He could have done it in his pajamas. Your videos are half cool wood cutting, half cool editing and half cool commentary. That makes them 133% better than the reaction video.

I've watched so much of your content on my TV that I thought I was subscribed. Just remedied that on my macbook. I'm 61 and have been a tradesman all of my adult life but was never around a sawmill. Fascinating! Love all of your videos.
Those are truss plates for manufactured trusses. The wood is laid out in the truss pattern and then plates are placed at each joint and a rolling press runs over them to mash them into the wood. Then they're put on my semi and I deliver them all over the south.

A friend of mine works in a log yard in northern PA. Instead of the metal truss thingy they use Log Savers. They are plastic I shaped things that are hammered in the ends of veneer logs to stop a split from growing and preserve the value. And since they are plastic they don't harm the veneer machines.

On average how long does it take to air dry slabs to get you to the point you can build something? It would differ on what kind of wood but just curious of an average.
Sawed some 9 quarter Red Oak slabs this weekend! First time having something sawed! Your videos under expressed the amount of work that is required to get it on and off the mill, and drying! Lol! Great videos! keep up the entertaining work!

Those metal plates on the bottom of the log are used when you build truss rafters. Wherever you have a joint or where a piece comes in at an angle you use those plates to join the two pieces of wood together.
What's with the light wood streaks in the interior part of the plank? I thought Walnut was a consistent chocolate color (excluding sap wood) Do the light parts darken due to light/air contact?
I’m just getting into milling. Is there a way to learn what type of logs your cutting when all you have to go on is the trunk or in general? I’ve run across several homeowners that have no idea.
I'm going to start watching the weather report for East Tennessee from now on because I love watching your videos and have to know what's going in your neck of the woods...
All this proves is how powerful modern tools are, to be able to make such a clean cut with such a messed up piece of wood. Also how incredible modern stains are, and how staining and good cuts can really make almost any piece of wood look good.
That trick you do, splashing water on the slabs to expose the grain is awsome. It really does show everything... what do you do with all the slabs you cut?
I think those are truss plates for tying a frames. I could be wrong but thats what it looks like to me. I don't think anyone could ever get tired of watching someone cut into a bunch of awesome walnut. Man I need a mill bad.
they are called gussets, they are normally used when building roof trusses, pounded in at the joints on the trusses, to strengthen and to prevent joints coming apart.
You did good son. I worked in a sawmill during the last part of the 80's. Mostly Doug Fir and Hemlock. I hate to see potentially good cants going to waste. Nice to see someone else has an appreciation for what could be.

7:40 I think they're called a gusset plates or mending plate. They are used by truss manufacturers.
Some times called a gang nail or plate nail.
I've heard them called truss ties and strong ties, but strong ties may be a manufacturer's name.
Strong tie is manufactured by the Simpson company. They are mostly used in the wooden truss manufacturing process to connect panel points.

The metal plate is called a "gangnail" used mainly in trusses to joint 2x4's on the 3 1/2" side

I was wondering if you took a splitter and ran a water line to the leading edge of your blade if it would help make your blades last longer?
We in the UK, call the plate a gang nail. Usually used on roof trusses. ✌

In the U.S. Northeast we have a few names for it but we call it gang nail or gang plate as well.

Hello OTW, that's a "Roof Truss Nail Plate". It's used on the Joists and Truss when framing out the roof section of a home.
Seems like a warm in the western south shore of Lake Ontario. Some snow...melts off in daylight.

All this proves is how powerful modern tools are, to be able to make such a clean cut with such a messed up piece of wood. Also how incredible modern stains are, and how staining and good cuts can really make almost any piece of wood look good.
That trick you do, splashing water on the slabs to expose the grain is awsome. It really does show everything... what do you do with all the slabs you cut?

I think those are truss plates for tying a frames. I could be wrong but thats what it looks like to me. I don't think anyone could ever get tired of watching someone cut into a bunch of awesome walnut. Man I need a mill bad.

they are called gussets, they are normally used when building roof trusses, pounded in at the joints on the trusses, to strengthen and to prevent joints coming apart.

You did good son. I worked in a sawmill during the last part of the 80's. Mostly Doug Fir and Hemlock. I hate to see potentially good cants going to waste. Nice to see someone else has an appreciation for what could be.
