    Something great would be an auto mod downloader when you try to join a modded public server. Sort of like Gmod instead of having to manually download 20 or so cars beforehand.

      Oh god yes, a pet peeve with AC and ultimately the downfall of any heavily modded game without mod systems in place is the compatibility issues. Even in AC you have the same mods and still get the odd errors because a single file is slightly the wrong version etc

    Great insights into the simulator marketplace from someone who works in the industry. Kunos has changed significantly as a dev team in recent years, losing absolutely central devs such as Stefano and Aris. It'll be interesting to see how the newly formed team shapes the sim over coming years.

      Probably worth noting that a vacuum is normally quickly filled and the talent pool is quite large these days, esp with the sim racing hobby like the FS hobby have its recent massive growth in userbase, a portion of which will ultimately been bloody good developers.

      Yeah true. Kunos have shown adaptability when a key founder and main coder left the studio during ACC's lifespan. Perhaps there's unique challenges with a small studio like that with only 25 / 30 ish staffers working on a complex software project like a sim though. @@lewisbloom

    I really hope Kunos nail EVERYTHING when AC2 is released, there is literally no excuse not to, with the data available and so many titles being released before being 'ready' and the feedback/backlash they should be in a position to blow everything else out of the water with emphasis on 'should'.

    Great video! Sorry, I got a big comment here, lol.
    I'm a really big Skyrim modder. The transition to a newer game/version is very similar here.
    Skyrim came out in 2011, and it was 32 bit. So it had a lot of modding restrictions. In 2016, Skyrim Special edition came out, and aside from nicer graphics, it was in 64 bit. The game not only looked better, but in a lot of cases, ran better on newer systems. It also crashed less. It was a straight upgrade. But the original Skyrim already had 5 years of mods. Taking that into consideration, the original could look better and have waaaay more features.
    Fast forward 2 years, and I'd argue that Skyrim SE was better overall. And now, its not even close. Because of the performance improvements, the game looks better, runs better, can have larger explorable worlds, and more complex mods. But there are still those who swear by old Skyrim. But about 98% of us don't even look back.
    I think just like with Skyrim and MSFS, Assetto Corsa 2 will be divided at launch. But eventually it will overtake AC1. Assuming its still fairly easy to mod, and that old mods can be ported without too much trouble. There have been cases where a newer game is ignored for being less moddable. But I think Kunos is pretty aware of this. So I'm confident they'll do pretty well.
    If AC2 also has noticably better AI, night time and rain already incorporated, and other modernizations like you said, it won't take too long.
    Personally, I'd also like a career mode a bit closer to Gran Turismo. Those who know me know I don't shut up about this, but having a simplistic career where you can race for money and use it to buy more cars to race more events will bring in more players IMO. And if the game is just as moddable, we can technically have an ever expanding career mode that hits the nostalgia.
    Custom championships with custom rewards, and racing them on custom tracks with custom cars. If they give us the basic foundations for that, we can do the rest.
    The GT Mode career is still fun, and having it with realistic physics with our insane rigs, in VR, with a career mode that we make ourselves would be a dream come true for me.
    As much as I like realistic career modes, I also like video games. Sims are still games at the end of the day.

    • @lewisbloom
      @lewisbloom  7 месяцев назад +2

      The number go up is big in game design, at least in my head its a known aspect. So I am 110% on board with the career and light grind aspect being a fun part of some games, so long as its optional and there's a million ways to design it into the game so it is, imo its a win win!
      As I mentioned to @slowTragoul in another comment, SCS the Truck sim devs have shown how a simplistic business model that's essentially database driven, easy to build can not only be enough for such things but be really successful in adding the "aim" and "goal" aspects to the games.

    • @UltraVarietyChannel
      @UltraVarietyChannel 7 месяцев назад +1

      @@lewisbloom Honestly, the truck sim games are a perfect example. They made people who don't care about trucks addicted to the games.
      The biggest thing I considered was quick and easy implementation, and it being unintrusive. It has to be totally optional like AC1 career mode. And the game would have the exact same free play race system with everything unlocked.
      It's all menus. It doesn't even need to be as pretty as Gran Turismo. Its all stuff I learned 3 or 4 months into learning how to code.
      AC1 already recognizes horsepower drivetrain and year, just add racing category tags and a price. If modders just add a price tag to their cars, it would automatically get added to the dealership, and AI car selection list.
      With custom championships you can pick tracks, length, and car class, and the game could calculate rewards based on that. Modded tracks would be added to the selection list. For extra credit, you can name the championship and use one of your screenshots for a background picture. Custom championship thumbnails would use the same font as Kunos championships.
      Boom, infinitely expandable career mode. I really think its that simple.
      I really don't think they're adding a career mode like that. But GT Sport added it post launch and I think they can too. And I think it would bring in more players.

  • @edteach3r
    @edteach3r 7 месяцев назад +3

    Only time will tell. I hope you are correct, but I don’t think eye-candy will do it. In my opinion, the sim-racing community has become far too sophisticated in terms of physics, tyre models, FFB, etc. to be woo’d by waving trees and shining wet tracks. AC2 will have to improve upon the physics (rear-end numbness, for example) for hardcore sim racers to jump ship. Of course, I may be entirely wrong and would gladly be proven so. Variety has never been a bad thing.😊

    • @lewisbloom
      @lewisbloom  6 месяцев назад

      indeed variety is the spice of life but don't under estimate eye candy. The Flight sim types make the physics sim racers look like casuals with the rivet counting and many still moved over on the eye candy and marketing. MSFS was a big step but AC2 could equally be a big step though not grounded in just eye candy but updating those little AC physics niggles that tbf a lot of the AC hardcore tend to gloss over as it is.

  • @CurtOntheRadio

    One guaranteed way it can make itself into something is to be backwards compatible, or at least require only a simple conversion. rFactor messed up on that, big style. I don't expect it to happen but they really should work at it.
    Decent AI would be a big deal too but nobody has ever managed it so far (ACC being the best ever effort imo).
    I've been on AC since day one and have several terabytes of mods. Kunos (or anyone) will have to work hard to get me off it, especially now I have VR running so well.
    Given the state of AC and its still-rich mod production I don't see much of a space for AC2. It's going to have to be pretty special to make room for itself and I don't see it happening. OTOH, all it needs do is seriously upgrade the driving experience (and do everything else modded AC does) and I'll be on it. But I have very low expectations, these things rarely work out as we'd like.

    I have to agree with you Lewis, all day long! I too have had years of experience in the flight sim world and the similarities are just the same. I own multiple racing sims each for their own reasons - AC for mods and great VR stability, ACC for eye candy and GT3's, AMS2 for the VR performance and variety of classes. So why be limited to just one sim?
    Now back on to AC2 and it's success - If the eye candy is good, the racing is immersive and performance is good it can't go wrong. People will eventually follow as long as it has variety and the above, even without mods. Add mods, just adds the longevity of the sim.

    Hot take.... I want AC2 to be a street car game like Test Drive Unlimited, but super realistic. No circuits. Just open roads with traffic that follows real traffic laws. Real or fantasy roads.
    Otherwise it's nothing new, just another Spa-Silverstone-Monza game. ACC has still legs as a serious racing sim, why make a competitor for that. Better to make something different than other sims, there's so many similar circuit sims already but none like this. Imagine street racing in realistic roads in TDU style. Realistic police chases (minus shooting you) and damage. Include some circuits as DLC but make road racing the center piece, and single player around that in TDU style. Acquire cars, by winning money from street races. (With no stupid arrow signs telling where to turn)
    Besides, since AC2 will be moddable, modders will release all the circuits anyway. No need for Kunos to even waste time on it
    Open roads and traddic mods are already popular in AC1 with CSP. (Two most downloaded tracks mods in RaceDepartment are open world tracks) Street cars were the strong point of AC1, we don't need another game with incomplete racing classes, or 1-2 cars per class again... rather have everything be street cars, and own it. Do something different for once, in the forever-stagnant sim racing world.
    People need to be more open minded.. lots of sim racers liked TDU2. But it has never been done with proper physics. Never. Now could be the time. Why do you people want another dry circuit racer, with the same circuits over and over again... I need a change of pace. I would love Forza Horizon too, if it wasn't designed for kids, and the handling was better. And Forza Horizon or TDU Solar Crown will never have proper VR, which would shine in a sim like this
    And hire Ilja and the CSP people... yes they hacked the AC code, but still, they did it for the better of community and better of AC. They have skill that needs to be hired.

    • @lewisbloom
      @lewisbloom  6 месяцев назад

      I think your idea has some legs but ultimately the reason its not realistic is because, well to make it real, means a lot of the time if not all the time you wont finish the race. NFS games only work because they don't have the realistic part to them. Bash you way around the street track etc.

    • @shredd5705
      @shredd5705 6 месяцев назад +2

      @@lewisbloom Yes it might be tricky, and paradoxical to have a realistic sim about something that doesn't happen that much in real life. But you'd just have to take more care with how you drive to not damage the car, such as BeamNG scenarios. And AI and police AI would be tuned for that too. NFS is one level crazier, TDU was clearly more realistic imo, while the physics sucked. TDU had police chases, but they weren't as ridiculous as in NFS. There was no bashing, if they reached you, you automatically received a ticket.
      I mean, you kinda can have races in open world tracks of AC1. Like LA Canyons. With or without traffic. Traffic brings a random element of course, but it's bearable in 1v1 races. With more than that, you could race on closed stretches of the road. And there can't be pedestrians (empty streets) or they'd have to be like in the old game "Driver", where they always dodge you in the last second, automatically. So nobody actually dies on screen, that wouldn't fit the tone very well. Or well, maybe they would die, and you go to jail for vehicular manslaughter lol, game over.
      But yes it has some problems... I just loved TDU and TDU2 but I don't think realistic handling in game like that will ever happen.. which is a huge shame. Devs with good physics focus on circuit racing, so these 2 interesting things are forever separated. I just think AC strong point was the street cars... and for street cars, streets kinda make sense. If someone could pull a "realistic TDU" off, it's Kunos Simulazioni

      Just doing one style of driving/ racing would be boring to me. Assetto Corsa will not be just this type of game. It will have Race circuits and various race cars, If it does turn out to be just a Test Drive game, I will not be buying it.
      There are enough open road mods in AC1, isn''t that enough.

    • @shredd5705
      @shredd5705 5 месяцев назад

      @@dathyr1 Just doing one style of driving yes. But my point is, every sim from GTR2, Live For Speed, RaceRoom, rFactor 1, rFactor 2, iRacing, AC, ACC, Automobilista, AMS2, Project Cars 1-2, has been like that. One style of driving, just circuit driving, on the same boring circuits (except Automobilista, which actually has some fresh SA circuits). Why not do something different for once. Forza Horizon series is very popular, people like open world driving. But who says it has to be so arcade and childish, you could make it totally immersive and real, with VR (one thing these other games will never do).
      People also loved TDU2 (including most sim racers I know, despite the shallow physics) and TDU Solar Crown seems to be just as arcade, not a step towards realism like was hoped. There's basically 100% untapped market segment there.. instead of competing with every other circuit racing sim, why not try something new. It could easily also include circuit tracks as DLC, plus, if it allows modding (like it 99% surely does, considering they call it Assetto Corsa 2, and move into in-house engine) modders will do every circuit track anyway. What modders can't build, is a game that is designed for open world racing, with believable traffic, cop system etc.
      I mean.. what the game is going to be, is probably already decided. Development must have started ages ago. But I hope they at least put traffic in there with open world tracks. Or support for modding it in. In AC1 modding it required considerably trickery and hacking the game files (Custom Shaders Patch/Content Manager) and it's still kinda meh.
      LA Canyons is the most downloaded track mod for AC1, in RaceDepartment. That says a lot I think... Pacfic Coast is the second most donwloaded. Both are open road tracks. Union Island is the 4th most downloaded, also +30km of open roads.

    Mods in AC1 and third party online multiplayer has played a big role in the success of AC1 and ACC. But I think looking at the goals of the publisher (505) and Kunos my guess is AC2 will not have mod support or a full-blown online system. My impression is 505 games wants another multi-platform PC+console release and Kunos doesn't seem interested in being involved in running an online service.

Maybe work on a more streamlined track builder. Maybe talk to Ilja and Peter to get stuff like rain and more graphics optimalisation. But even if they didn't, that stuff will probably be sorted out with mods by the end of the year.
