    PC2 had a much more advanced tyre model than the first game. Whether or not it was "better" is contentious, but there's a lot more going on under the hood in the way that what the wheels are doing is communicated to the player.
    Some people like it, some hate it and some will say that a downloadable ffb tweak is the only way to play it.
    I personally loved it once I got the stock ffb settings dialed in. PC2 in VR especially is still an unmatched experience. Playing a 2.4 hours of Le Mans with 10x time acceleration is one of my all time most amazing gaming moments. Daybreak in an open top LMP2... Down the mulsanne straight with LMP1's screaming past me as they deploy their hybrid systems... Diving up the inside of an angry corvette GTE as it barks down the gears going into the chicane... Absolute bliss.
    PC3 took the bones of 2 only to fart out a half baked, dumbed down cash-grab. If the stories are to be believed it was originally intended as a mobile port - given its compressed dev cycle and announcement so soon before release it's plausible.

    Track temperature has a massive effect on the tyre model in pcars... most cars default setups start on hard tyres, but if the track is cold the tyres won't work, and if it's too hot the soft tyres don't work.
    Which is probably why you felt the inconsistency from race to race.
    As someone else in the comments, Automobilista 2 is what pcars3 always should have been.

    While I cannot speak for PC3 (I've never played it), I do admit that the handling in this game is a little bit out there. I played PC1 on Xbox One ages ago, and when I got my first gaming PC I played PC2 and finally bought a wheel. I think one of the reasons why a lot of people look so fondly in this game is the online community surrounding it. I joined a community who held multiple weekly races, as well as a commentary team who used to cast it on Twitch. Those are still some of my best gaming memories. I think, another reason people love it so much, is the fact that this was so accessible as a sim title, with plenty of content, a pretty solid career mode and online component. No one else really had that, Assetto Corsa felt great to drive but felt far less complete as a game (not counting mods here), iRacing was just far too expensive for most people and rFactor 2 felt like it was held together with duct tape. Project Cars 2 felt complete as a game, it had an atmosphere, it had a distinct personality, and a community that really made it great. I still can't believe they pulled this from sale.

    • @wimpwilson
      @wimpwilson  7 месяцев назад +3

      100% the community around these games (pc3 aside) is great - one of the main reasons I was a bit scared to be honest about how I felt about the handling model 😂 going to persist with it because I think everything else in there is great, especially to your point about it feeling like a proper fleshed out game this time around

      I learned about PC2 after it was discontinued. So I searched for a Steam key and found a deluxe version with some sort of eastern add on as well. Loaded it on Steam. So for me there is no online community as it's a ghost town.
      Everyone just says it's dead and over. But I fired it up on my gear in my race chassis as PC2 was new to me. After getting my Gear dialed in and some car set up from the garage I was floored! This sim 's a blast!!

    IT IS NOT FULL SERIES. One game is missing. AUTOMOBILISTA 2 was originally developed as a successor of PC2, runs the same engine. And it is the game, what PC3 should have been! Better graphics, better physics, realistic handling. It is fantastic game, and still growing. Last year developers made a massive update to physics. It is superb to play with steering wheel.

      Automobilista 2 has been developed by Reiza Studios and has nothing to do with PC2. It's just that the developpers have used PC2's engine on the same way they did with rfactor's engine on Automobilista 1

    • @RockyTM_301

      @@sagastim There is a big difference. They never had access to Rfactors source code which made ams1 basically a big mod.With the madness engine, they got full access, and could really improve upon the engine. First release of AMS2 was almost identical to PC2 in handling, but engine improvements over time has made this game to one of the best right now. First off, I play on PC through Steam. PC2 was similar to Shift 2 Unleashed in that while it offered many improvements upon the original, it didn't make the original title obsolete. I preferred PC1's career structure over PC2, and little details like tunnel reverb and seeing an open wheeler's tyres pick up grime after running off track.
    Necessity is a hell of a thing because I don't have a wheel. I play on gamepad and while I'm damn sure I am not competitive against wheel players, I disagree the game is unplayable with a pad. I've managed to tame every boost monster with the exception of that legendary Lotus F1 car. Pretty sure I have the same praises as every Project Cars fan, but my main grip with PC2 is how the grip affecting conditions only affected you and not the AI cars. What I hold dear about Project Cars and NFS Shift is that Slightly Mad Studios genuinely gave a damn about the games, the dedication showed in many aspects of their racing games (Fast & Furious Crossroads doesn't count), which is why it was easy to forgive the flaws. As for PC3, that was behind the scenes greed, bullshit and vindictiveness that other RUclips channels have touched upon, so I won't. That has me conflicted about buying PC3 when the inevitable pre-delisting sale happens.

    • @wimpwilson
      @wimpwilson  7 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah I’m working on a vid for shift 2 at the moment and I totally agree, there are improvements but there’s things I prefer about the first game.
      I played all 3 of the pc games with a pad this time around and I agree I think they all work really well in that format.
      It’s funny you mentioned the grip issue, I actually cut that bit out of the video because I had a sound glitch but I noticed the same thing, pretty frustrating. As for pc3, I can’t really advise anyone to pick that one up unfortunately, though it has its fans. Main issues I have are the driving just feels really stripped back complexity wise and the career mode is unnecessarily grindy

    This game really excels at endurance cars. Lmp’s and gte’s the rest of the cars have kinda funky weight transfer and the heavier the worse. For me when stability control is on and traction control is off its closest to irl racing I’ve experienced. Pc1 is great for road cars and going sideways is way more fun in pc1 but pc2 is better on a controller and with the right setup.
    The new tyre model is really good but it SUCKS at dealing with kerbs and they’ll try to kill you. That’s why stability control is a must. It will force tc on but if you go into setup you can set it to .99 (for some reason the higher the tc number the less traction control) you can still get the car to step out but it’s much more predictable .
    I may be biased because I really vibe with the physics and was on of the fastest wheel users on the last few community challenges and did league racing on the game but it’s a lot of fun.

    Having played PC2 on both console and PC I can definitely say it's a console thing, the game feels like it was made more for a wheel than a controller..that being said even on PC some of the cars do feel disconnected, a trait of the madness engine and the default setups, its something Reiza would develop and work on for Automobilista 2 (peak madness engine imo).
    Also for your comments regarding the jump from 1 to 3, you were initially right, corporate greed and original devs/creators leaving the company left the game to be turned into this horrible shell of what it once was, which makes it all the more pleasing that AM2 has carried the spirit on and let it flourish.

However this game will be a classic for me because of the hundreds of hours racing my friend or the time racing with my uncle that has now made us a lot closer so in my eyes it’s pretty great and now it’s a time piece as after upgrading to a fanatec dd it’s no longer supported by pc2 on console

      My conspiracy theory is that project cars 3 was deliberately made to kill the franchise, and tarnish it's legacy. You can make project cars 2 an arcade racer by going into options to turn off rules and change handling settings, there was no reason for pc3 not to be a SIM racer, hell even if it was the same game engine and assets as pc2 will a couple of new tracks and 10 new cars, I would take that any day of the week

    It has to grow in you I guess. I first hated it too comparing this to PC1, now I wouldn't looking back to PC1.
    I believe the sense of speed is a matter of scale, PC2 objects looks further away than PC1 and smaller (nothing to do with FOV). The first thing that struck me when I first played PC2 was the changes to the scenery, e.g. just compare the trees of PC1 and PC2.
    But over all you can't neglect the added features of PC2:
    - Proper car roster
    - Water physics and live track
    - Mixed racers like LMP and GTE/GT3 and custom races
    - Better tire model
    - Ingame options menu
    - More in depth setup and engineer assistance
    - better rules for cutting corners
    - AI sliders and better AI in general (still track dependent tho, it is quite slow at first round, still open wheels are terrible and qualify session unbalanced )
    - Better career
    - Rallycross and snow tracks
    - A proper spotter (just like crewchief)
    - Better wheel and controller support, and now it saves your settings if you jump regularly from wheel to controller and vise versa.
    - Possible a couple more features (like online ranking system but I am an introvert so I don't care :P ).

    I played on Xbox with a controller. I struggled for a while, some cars seemed OK whilst others were crazy, and the track made a difference too. Driving a Porsche GT3 at Bathurst was tricky but do-able, but the same car at Oschersleben, I spin out every time. Then I found a video by Super GT with controller setting and it was like a different game. I didn't spin out, unless I made an error and was able to complete all events. Really enjoyed it, retro touring cars (audi & Nissan GTR), the GT4 Aston Martin, Group 5 BMW, so many great cars and tracks. Hello Sam, I have some suggestions that might help fill in some blanks on where all the love for PC2 comes from. I'm certain you've heard this before, but I'd strongly recommend at minimum an entry level wheel, like the Logitech. I also did not like the controller experience, for similar reasons you mentioned here. With some good, dialed-in settings, a wheel transforms this game. On PC it gets even better if you double down on the immersion with VR; the sense of speed was never an issue for me when wearing the headset. Racing in VR in general is a breathtaking experience, and PC2 was my introduction to that. Lastly I'd recommend some buddies to play with. Like any game, it's better with friends, and PC2 does private lobbies very well.
    Hope that helps! Great video! 😄

    I wouldn't compare PC in 4K with higher dollar sim gear to a game pad with a console for any sim really. I had at first a problem with FFB feeling rough like it could break my GT-DD pro base. But observing further I chose Immersive mode and turned up game settings at 100% then my gear is at 110% through the Fanatec software and a total night & day difference. I'm using VRS pedals and I am so impressed with them to the point where I invested too in the VRS wheel base.

    Lowkey tried pc1 again compared to pc2 and I gotta say I can get what you mean by "bitey" handling. The handling in the first game had a better angular momentum catch than pc2. Pc2 has a lot more understeer/slip on the tires compared to pc1. Also pc2 has less track bouncing, but in some cases thats a good thing how autistic the game likes to be.

    @quelxes 5 месяцев назад

    Awesome video, like always 👍 I do not want to compare 1 to 2 as I played 1 on PC some time ago now, and I still play 2 but on PS5 so there may be some disconnect. What I want to say that in both games I always have full control of the car in the sense that I always know what is happening with that car. FFB is crispy, and always informs about all things related to car driving / behavior. I know what to expect from every car in dry or wed. I do not have the same feeling in, for example GT7 (staying in PS5 ecosystem) where the FFB seems to be flat sometimes, muted. The car in GT7 can go into spin with me not feeling it on the wheel. Never had that in PC1 or 2. It is like in souls-like, if I mess up I know it was my fault. There are some cons - puddles and AI. AI totally ignores aquaplaning coming from puddles, and AI difficulty is not consistent. For example. You spend 30 minutes to set the difficulty right for the next 6h long race (yes, I also did full 24h Le Mans). You start in dry and everyone is competitive. Here comes the rain, and AI becomes much slower and you start doing 2-4s quicker laps building the gap. That the big, deep puddles come into picture and you are starting straggling with aquaplaning but AI just ignores it and becomes quicker than you. And you start praying for sun and drying track Overall both, PC 1 and 2 are still my favorite simracing title from a single player perspective. There is nothing else even close.

    • @quelxes
      @quelxes 5 месяцев назад

      I forgot to mentioned tire model. Very inconsistent. Let's take open wheel series as example.
      Formula Rookie - really cool model, even without aero those little formulas are pleasure to drive
      Formula C - horrible all over the place, car slides like crazy, really hard to warm up
      Formula Renault 3.5 - awesome, well done tire model and pleasure to drive
      Formula A - good soft tire model and horrible hard - hard are really hard to warm up and even when in the good temp range the car still slides like the track was damp
      Formula X - really good on both softs and hards. One of the races in career is 30 laps at Monaco in (almost) dark conditions. That car drives like dream there which is a real test for handling
      It is like different people worked on different cars or they spend more time/had more data for some tires than others. Or they just simple messed up some of the cars.
      Still, will repeat myself - awesome game and awesome video. Thanks

      Definitely agree re the force feedback in gt7, I love the visuals and single player structure of that game and car collection aspect but it’s definitely not the best driving sim out there. For me pc1 is where it’s at, though after some comments I tweaked my settings for the second game and that now feels pretty great as well. And yes, driving in the wet in 2 it feels like the ai are on a different track to you, bit frustrating. Thanks for the watch 😊

    The helmet cam in this game is probably the best in any game. It feels heaps fast with my settings. In camera settings try helmet camera field of view -120. fov speed sens - yes. Min speed sens-80. Max speed-sens 120. min speed sens speed -0. max speed sens speed -300. High speed shake -on. World movement -92. G force effect-100. helmet look to apex -60. helmet leaning -80. Camera leaning -80.
    It might be a bit exaggerated but fpv driving, especially drifting, doesn't feel faster in any game I've played. Example - ruclips.net/video/C9XJ9zHxjVc/видео.html
    The chase cam is the worst I've ever seen though. It feels slow like gran turismo, with the camera being locked to the back of your car but what makes it really suck is that it zooms out while braking heavily and zooms in when accelerating, the opposite of what it should be.

    I own 1 & 2 on xbox, but I've only actually played 2, with 254 hours into it. In my opinion, it's unplayable with a controller, and the FFB settings for wheels take a *lot* of tweaking (and even then I can't for the life of me get karts to play nicely with the wheel, there's just violent amounts of clipping). It's certainly not a very polished experience - when I'm in the mood for some realistic sim driving, I'll do hotlaps in Assetto Corsa, lamenting the absence of mods on console, but the variety of cars, tracks, and the career structure (and weather, day/night cycle, and damage models) on pcars2 always draw me back as my second-favourite console sim experience.
    The handling model is certainly frustrating, the slipperiness lends itself best to the contemporary Indycar chassis, but makes all other vehicles just not quite feel... right. Honestly, your critiques of pcars2 have got me really excited to give the first game a go, I'd redownloaded it after watching your other Project Cars video, and after watching this video I think I'm gonna boot it up for the first time :D

      @AliceHawke 8 месяцев назад

      @@gabrielriley2388 the following is anecdotal from my memory, but years back when I was playing on an original Xbox One with a wheel, I think there was/is an issue where the more AI cars there are in a session, the physics will start to fall apart due to the increased load on the CPU from the additional vehicles which makes the handling feel different, I think that might be the difference you're experiencing? Decreasing the number of cars on the grid should improve it again, which is a shame as large multi-class grids are a fantastic atmosphere to race in but the handling gets wonky :(

    • @nickklavdianos5136

      I'm a controller player, and you're pretty much spot on. The controller experience is basically 'random xd', because the cars end are completely erratic in all ways possible. One lap they understeer, next lap they oversteer. You brake precisely at your braking point, the same one you've been using for all previous laps, and suddenly you've overshot the corner.
      While I've been able to go decently fast, I've never really been able to be precise, or consistent. Racing in this game is more of a 'try to keep your car inside the track' challenge. It's pretty masochistic. Another fact is that there are definitely some cars that are ok to drive and others that are nearly impossible to. From experience, most GT cars are pretty ok, same for touring cars and other low horsepower stuff. Open wheelers and prototypes are also pretty ok, even the group C monsters can be manageable.
      Ultimately, I find myself comming back to this game, because of its great variety in cars, tracks and the fact that the AI is decently fast for my standards. So when I get bored of playing F1, and wish to get some action in different cars, I play this game.

      For me 100% - I think it’s a bit of a personal taste thing, but I just feel way more connected to the road in the first game. Having said that, from what other people are saying it sounds like the improved tyre model in the second game might be responsible for making some races feel really good and some not so good, which I guess is probably more realistic than the first game. Don’t think you can go wrong with 1 regardless though, the driving feels great

    It drives fine but the brakes are too sensitive. Set your brake sensitivity to the lowest setting and then learn how to trail brake into corners and it is very realistic in terms of the feel of weight distribution and traction. Other games allow you to take corners without this technique making people with no skill think they are amazing drivers. When you do this you take corners much faster and thats when you get the sense of speed.

  • @piottiplays1874
    @piottiplays1874 6 месяцев назад +1

    So I’m not gonna say your wrong, but you are, at least partially. As some people have already pointed out, tire and track temp matter a lot when it comes to finding grip in the corners (the floatiness that you feel).
    But even more than that, PC2 is one of the first games to actually integrate the system of center of mass on a car. You see, if you hit the throttle going into a corner the front wheels will lift up slightly and lose traction, causing less turning, this is caused by a change of center of mass, hitting the throttle moves more weight to the rear and taking from the front.
    I do also have to say that aero and downforce on cars does have an effect. If you test drive 10 different cars in the same class, with different downforce on each one, on the same track, say Fuji raceway, they have different track performance. Some cars with more downforce have more traction in the corners, but feel slower in the straights. But the cars with less downforce have more speed on the straights, and less grip in the corners. However this also requires some fine tuning of your setup, as each car has its own individual setup that you can customize to fit your driving style.
    And to address your complaint about the feeling of speed while on the track, I believe that just comes from the camera settings, tv or monitor, and overall the realism of PC2. In real life you don’t get that streamline peripheral vision when going high speeds. Given that I’ve gone over 100 Mph twice, once in a truck (120) and another on a motorcycle (160), I can confidently say that your vision does not become blurry, but that’s just me, others might have different experiences. And I think that the developers tried to capture that clarity that drivers have even at high speeds.

    I had PC2 on the XBOX one s originally using a Thrustmaster wheel and every so often it would drive terrible and a car i thought I could drive well suddenly wouldnt. Found out its a glitch on console when you have too many cars on the track. The console isn't powerful enough and it does some weird thing with telemetry and the physics. Happy to report n PC this is not the case. I feel it drives as well as AC and in fact some cars that are in both i find easier to drive in PC2. bBut the main advantage for me about it is the VR. It runs and looks so much better in VR than AC does. Obviously AMS2 is the same there, but for me AMS2 is seriously lacking in cars and tracks as its more focused on South American racing. I like all the road cars in PC2
