Gordon Murray on how he developed his perfect supercar | GMA T.50

- The GMA T.50 has followed in the McLaren F1's footsteps as Gordon Murray strives to make the ultimate driving machine. Continuing the V12 bloodline of the F1, the T.50's engine revs to an incredible 12,000rpm and when it flew around the Goodwood Motor Circuit, you could hear every single one of them.
Another trait the two share is the Ultima test mule. To explain why, 30 years later, the Ultima is still the perfect mule, Gordon Murray talks us through the T.50 lineage. We had the 10 stages of the GMA T.50s lined up at the 79th Members' Meeting presented Audrain Motorsport and each one has a role to play in the final masterpiece.

What will GMA be bringing to 81MM 🤔
NOT ENOUGH POWER LIKE TODAYS MCLARENS...FERRARIS...CORVETTES....TODAYS CARS YOU CAN MODIFY UPGRADE TO MATCH ANY DRIVING CONVENIENCE. .Gorden cars are too expensive and MAINTNANCE PARTS NOT EASILY ASSESIBLE LIKE OTHER CARS.😊
It never gets old hearing Gordon talk about all the cars he has worked on and does work on! Excellent video Goodwood!
He's the king !
I love John Cleese in his role as Q and talking to James Bond about his Aston Martins. I also love John Cleese in his role as Gorden Murray and talking about those GMA T-cars.
😂👍
Wonderful insight. I really appreciate an interviewer who did not bombard us with their own importance...
Mr Murray has so much to offer in an area we get to see so little of, without being constantly interrupted!
Thank you so much!
If you know the history of the F1, every given aspect of the T.50 makes me happy. I love that Gordon still chose to develop the same way he did back with the F1
Completely agree. Regulations have such a strangle on F1 nowadays.
If I only had this type of money to purchase such a classic.. if it manages to compete in lemans like it’s predessor did, these will skyrocket in value as well. Always a pleasure to hear Gordon speak. 👏🏻🙂
Can’t bring a fan to Le Mans
There many cars that never went to Le Mans but skyrocketed in value
The man’s pure genius. Could listen to him all day
The man cares about what I care about in a car. I don't need to hit a Brazilian miles an hour, I want the shifter to feel perfect, for computers to not step in and stop me from sliding when I've made a mistake and for my hands to control and feel when I'm taking a turn. There's nothing more in the automotive world that I want than a car designed and made by Mr. Murray. Like you said he's a genius
That was a great walkthrough, Gordon is a rare car design talent and a gifted communicator. The way he gets over the essence of supercar design and production, with that infectious enthusiasm you can’t fail to learn something from the great man.
Holy crap I had no idea they did so MANY prototypes and of different spec levels.
Purity right there. Nothing less ❤
What I would give for an Ultima with that 12k RPM Cosworth engine in it
An instant classic.... Described by Ze man himself...
Thanks.
Saw PS02 FAN southbound on the M1 the other day. Assume that is one of the homologation cars? Glorious looking and sounding thing. I don't suppose I'll see one again, but happy to have shared a traffic jam with one at least X)
Thank you for this. Been a fan since the F1.
They even gave it a name ❤. George must be preserved at all costs!
What a gem. Soooooo looking forward to this weekend. Cannot wait to hear those Can Ams 😮
There needs to be a “sub 500” exemption for super cars. This tech is what leads to better tech for all of us.
Always a pleasure
This guy is my #1 in F1, tech for producing a quality diving experience. he lays it out all so flat. no argument.
Just like the McLaren F1 for prototyping the are using the Ultima chassis again on the GMA T50. History repeats again in modest fashion.
I didn't realise they built so many cars to reach production. The extra steps from XP to PS I never knew about. I thought the process would be quicker.
Proud South African
As a Saffer myself, I didn't know this about Murray and I've been an avid follower of his for yonks! Bloody brilliant!
@@NadimBraun He’s a genius. Although he’s probably more British than South African-(both his parents are Scottish and moved to SA for work) He learned most of his craft in the UK!
Yeah, agreed. It just validates my own observation about what South Africa has done best in its history: Fail to capitalise on the massive talents that emerge here. Tolkien, Ghandi, Musk, Trevor Noah et al.
The T.50 is something I'll probably never experience and isn't that interesting to me for that reason. Still, this video got me.
Certainly the greatest supercar made, it is interesting that they are largely ignored by the guys that are looking for attention on social media and such, definitely a "drivers" car!!
A car for engineers and the purists.
Xcellent Content & explanation of the evolution of ur latest creation Gordon . And in one ur photos, think it was the F1 U certainly could have been mistaken 4 George Harrison. Thx 4 sharing Robert Australia
I thought he brought one or maybe three at most but seven, I never expected that.
Wow, goes some way to explaining the price ! 😊
Só de pensar que teremos a T.50 e T.33 em Goodwood esse ano, talvez a T.50S ?
That ultima mule❤
Understood. Buy Ultima and build your own dream car out of it, if you have the money.
If i got the money, i'd buy a used Audi R8 and put its engine and transmission into an Ultima. Audi R8s got a lot of engine and transmission aftermarket support in the US, they build 2000hp R8s there. 800-900hp should be doable in an Ultima chassis.
Where can I see the full video of the silver McLaren F1 on a hillclimb (a short clip of which begins at 6:20)?
On the Festival of Speed Instagram

does anybody know what kind of TVRs were used as mules for the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren?
There used Cerberas
I like the looks of the Ultima better. Red Ultima RS is my dream car
The T50 front view looks too similar to the McLaren F1 in my opinion. It is its only downside anyway!
Beautiful. That´s way they costs what they costs.
Tremendous car...best drivers car ever...best hypercar...best engineer ever
If a car is one man vision, rather than various people working gead to head, its gonna be a great car.
♥️
I wonder which automative era does Gordon value most as a car creator?
The final version looks incomparibly better than the one on the left in the thumbnail. The left one looks like some rejected script 2008 Porsche.
The first George looks like a Ultima Supercar with the cosworth engine for the future T50
He literally said that’s what it is
Now could you do the world a solid and do a pagani and actually build more of them?
Imagine if Murray and Koenigsegg put their heads together, who knows what the end product could be!
and pagani
The regulations on road cars add a lot of expense to the price of low production vehicles-- to the point that almost no one can afford them. That doesn't seem fair to me. Of course, the big car companies love it, because it adds a barrier to anyone who would want to compete with them.
They use TVR for the SLR ??? This explains why…..
I think that the T.50 would look better without the fan, and with slightly smaller headlights.
Gordon Ramsay on how he developed his perfect Grilled Cheese | GC T.69
Slr was a tvr 😁
Peter Stevens designed the McLaren f1 🎉
The Newey and Murray showed you can have very strong environmentally friendly car whilst being super light, fast, nimble, and screaming like the v12 or the V10s. Meanwhile F1 can’t even make a regulation that satisfies all of those criteria whilst failing miserably on every regulation since 2014. Even the 2026 engine rule doesn’t seem promising at all
Who thinks a younger Gordon looked like George Harrison....
"First carbon fibre car"? "First ground effect car"? McLaren F1?
Find it hard to believe that Gordon never heard of Jaguar XJR 15 when Jaguar was dominating Le Mans and pumped out both XJ220 and XJR 15 concept at that time, and the fact that a fellow F1's designer, Peter Stevens, is literally the one who designed XJR 15. Now, I'm not confident to say that XJR 15 is the first road car to implement those motorsport-derived features, but it certainly predates F1 by 2 years, which destroys those strange boasts by Gordon.
But eh, I suppose I should expect much nonsensical boasting from a man who claims that he's the sole designer of McLaren MP4/4 even though he only did some parts here and there.
PP heheheheheh
Wish he would design a cheaper lightweight sports car for lotus or something. 2 million dollars is beyond unobtainable
Work harder and you’ll get there

Mule-atto ha haaa
So, you build 50 prototypes to sell 100 cars... wow.
@rydirbanB They sell some prototypes and also recover the cost with the few cars sold...
Producing cars is a big endeavor that often causes small manufacturers to go out of business. This is pretty standard stuff when developing a new car. You just usually don’t see all of it. And, often they’ll just destroy the prototypes when they’re done with them.
man it's wild that the ultima looks better than the t50 by such a humongous lead
Imagine seeing a ratty Ultima, expecting a Chevy V8, and you see that under the hood.
My predictions, All cars will be built for rich people musuems or Goodwood kind festivals. Comedians will crash, Mat Armstrong or Stradman fixes etc..
Ffs what a boatload of wasted money jumping through gov. hoops. Could be so much more efficient and cheap.
Is that you, Elon?
The T.50 is a gorgeous car, no doubt, but comparing the T.50 to the McLaren F1 is like comparing Marilyn Manson to the godess Aphrodite.
.... Why?
@@axledog7297 Because of the engineering that goes behind the McLaren F1. No supercomputers, no electric motors. Just driver, car, and road.
step 1. Copy McLaren 😂 Gooofyyyyy ahhhhhhhhhhhhh
He created the F1, which is exactly his design language. So it’s gonna resemble McLaren’s look, cause he essentially made McLaren’s early design language
He created the F1
Looks very ugly and old-fashioned
You're blind.
There should be a new racing division. “The Gordon Newey” class! 1st place gets a trophy.. 2nd place gets whacked round the face with a kipper.
