  • This week on Y’s Guys, former BYU and NFL linebacker Harvey Langi discusses the impressive performance of BYU’s defense after six games and reflects on the lessons he learned throughout his career. Harvey, now a football analyst, praised BYU’s defensive unit for their discipline, chemistry, and ability to execute under pressure, which has earned them national recognition. He noted that this is a significant shift from the past, where BYU was traditionally known for its strong offense, especially quarterbacks and offensive linemen. Now, with a defense that consistently gets fans excited, Harvey emphasized how the team’s disciplined play, minimal penalties, and smart execution have made them a force to be reckoned with this season. He described the defense’s ability to control the game and capitalize on mistakes from opposing teams, while also supporting BYU’s offense when it needs time to grow.
Harvey also shared a key lesson from his NFL experience with Bill Belichick, where the legendary coach drilled into his players the importance of avoiding mistakes. Belichick's mantra, “We will win when we keep from losing,” is something Harvey believes BYU should follow this week against Oklahoma State. He explained how fundamentals, such as avoiding penalties and controlling what can be controlled, are crucial to maintaining momentum in tough matchups. Harvey highlighted how the only way Oklahoma State could have a chance to win is if BYU starts making avoidable mistakes, such as excessive penalties. His advice to BYU’s team was simple: play smart, stay disciplined, and everything will fall into place.
Additionally, Harvey discussed the influence of BYU’s alumni in the NFL and how their visibility-players like Fred Warner, Tyler Allgeier, and Taysom Hill-helps with recruiting by showing younger athletes what’s possible through the BYU program. He expressed admiration for BYU’s current players and their ability to handle pressure, noting how the defense continues to evolve and create turnovers, making them a key factor in the team’s success. As BYU gears up to face Oklahoma State, Harvey’s message was clear: stay disciplined, avoid penalties, and let the defense do what they do best-control the game.

The cougars to me has been a great success this year. The next games make me uncomfortable because they are teams that were predicted to be at the top of the standings

Go BYU, but as a long-time BYU fan (55 years), and thus experiencing a LOT of disappointments, I’m just afraid we are getting a little too full of ourselves in the flush of the moment.
