- On January 14, 2015, the Fretboard Journal welcomed guitarists Julian Lage and Nels Cline (Wilco) to our headquarters for this installment of Fretboard Journal Live. Lage and Cline discuss how they met through jazz legend Jim Hall; they talk about the gear they're using for their duo gigs (a Gibson Barney Kessel Custom for Cline; a Linda Manzer archtop for Lage); and they discuss the art of improvisation.
Cline and Lage perform three tunes from 'Room,' their debut album together: itunes.apple.c...

OK that 1st tune "Racy" is by FAR the most adventurous piece yet on the always good Fretboard live series... I mean sure... respect da traditions... authentic recreation... etc. but man did that ever blow the cobwebs out!!!
I really dig how these 2 guitarists approach playing together. Fascinating music, ideas, and more interesting stuff. Certainly worth 55 minutes of your time (imo).
18:22 Brief Hesitation
41:24 Freesia/The Bond
Very inspiring the chemistry between them just takes it to new levels of artistic expression. Just brilliant joy........making my day.......big smile! Thanks
Nels and Julian's duets achieve the blend of structure and improvisation to which I, and I'm sure many other guitarists, aspire. Both these guys are equally articulate as players and musicians. Inspiring stuff -- thanks!
@Evan Hodge 'Fraid I've missed your more subtle and insightful observation about this performance.
those two gtrs sound great together--Nels and Julian are a great and highly interesting gtr duo,,the pieces are not only improv kinda oriented but really modern harmony wise, wonderful stuff,,love the zt amps,,,6inch spkr but huge tone and plenty of headroom,,love this series from fretboard journal,,here here!,,,love the human quality they also exhibit,,undo amount of trust and respect,,almost unconditional, very rare these days.
My mind is blown off..this is next level stuff..
Gibson Barney Kessel signature model!! Don't hear much jazz played on these guitars nowadays or ever at all :) Sounds good.
excellent, very original, amazing guitar players
unique and beautiful playing from both...very enjoyable
Somebody get Ribot in on this!
They talk about All The Things You Are (Kern/Hammerstein). That song is very interesting in that, in the space of every chorus, it manages to include at least one chord built on every note of the Western 12-tone scale. An amazing music composition feat in itself. I have been a huge fan of Nels from listening to Wilco for decades and am amazed but not surpirsed at how he keeps up with Julian.
Wonderful playing, great job Fretboard Journal
The most technical 'ease into it' song I've ever heard...ha!
ohhhhh. So glad we're seeing this guy. Sorry we missed this duo. Not next time though. Cheers bro.
Very cool alternating time signature in that last tune.
Fantastic !
amazing!!
great !
Best version of Freesia/The Bond ever
Exquisito.
Listen from 41:20
thx!
yes, off the 'fragile' album/the fish
Crazy!!!!!!
I wasn't expecting that at all. Loved it though. Very like Derek Bailey.
JEEZ !!
haha that was some zany shit, so great
I think that's a Barney Kessel Standard, not a Custom. The Custom has bow tie fretboard inlays, eighth-note peghead inlay, and bound F holes. The Standard did often come with a truss rod cover erroneously labeled "Custom".
roycedot That's true, I had a '64 Barney Kessel (Standard) that Gibson put a "Custom" truss rod cover on. It was a great guitar, but it only had one strap button on the tail end. You can see some photos of T-Bone Walker playing a Barney Kessel with his strap tied around the headstock. Why they didn't install a second strap button in the factory is beyond me....?
Is that ZT Lunchboxes amplifiers?
Yes definitely. They used them on another video they did at a radio station as well, so they must have travelled with them. Nels uses the regular lunchbox, and Julian uses the acoustic version.
That's hip as hell.

What's the title of the last tune?
Nels is playing my fav Gibson model,if there is any model i like more than a 335 and an SG its the Trini Lopez !
Barney Kessel actually!
I know there was this version of Trini Lopez model guitar whihc had thick body (just like Barney Kessel) and had diamond shaped soundholes.
That double cut gibson looks really cool anybody know what that model is called?
It’s the Barney Kessel signature model.
@@obeychad i know that now after some looking around but thanks anyways!
this first song kind of jazzy & also sounded like yes song about the fish....just saying, nice...ty for posting
well this is kinda turning into Nels Cline Four, isn't it?
Who was Julian's father? Because it's totally abnormal for a 14 year old to like jazz let alone an 8 year old. Just the level of maturity, the sophistication just rarely appeals to anybody under 16. To study intensively with a jazz master from 8-12 and meet and play with Santana at 9, Jim Hall at 11 and know all the greats as a child and play with them, even more so. A privelage usually reserved to the offspring of famous celebrities. it's hardly surprising Julian is so good. He's incredibly lucky to have that background and I think he knows it. His father must surely have wanted him to be a famous jazz musician, and that was his life goal from early on.
Nels technique looks painful. Great player though
I think you're right lol
+CosMike Debris I think he's left handed but learn guitar right-handed. so that kind of awkwardness kinda stuck to his technique?
Nels' guitar looks like it may be the devil.
Funny because he seems to use the flattened fifth interval a lot, which historically in classical music they associated with the devil!
First tune... seriously? Two very brilliant guitarists playing such self indulgent trash.
come on david, step outta your comfort zone.. its pretty normal music
barney kessell favored CC pickups, why this is a Bk MODEL? love the music , but the talking is boring.
