Since 2010, I've seen eem him at least a dozen times, in almost as many settings. From a very free thing w Marc Ribot to his 5 piece. He's always in peak form and never disappoints.
@@cfibanez he's really just the nicest guy. Very genuine, childlike. They're all such great and unique artists. Was listening to Miles's Monk recordings and Mary's new Belladonna record the other day, can't wait for Julian's new record with Dave King and Jorge Roeder!
A wonderful video with 3 of my favorite musicians, each so inspiring and original and different from one another and yet, so much commonality in spirit and intention. Thanks for making and posting this. Kudos.
So cool and fun! Not surprising that the 3 of them as pro players and artists aren't really all that gear-centric, utility and tone come first. I was right there with Chris having all the answers to the nerdy detail questions though!
Thank you so much for posting this conversation among three great players and interesting thinkers about guitars and sound. I see some Quilter amps - are those what was used and which models are they, if you don't mind? Thank you.
@@michaelkay611 you got it! They all loved the amps and Julian and Miles took them home. The third one lives at EastSide Sound and we're told it gets a lot of use on sessions.
Its actually quite good to hear other guitarist talking about their instruments and things in general. I live in the suburbs so don't get to meet other players. In fact even before moving here I was pretty much a solitary person. I play guitar in my local church. I recently got diagnosed with breast cancer which I'm convinced was caused from the guitar resting on my right side 😐. 😌 I don't think my doctor was impressed with that idea. Anyhoo I'm near the end of treatment , by God's grace I will resume my playing in Church and back to good health🙏🏾🇬🇧
@0xkudz4i Thank you. 😊 im now back to playing guitar 🎸. Chemo all done. Still a bit of treatment but I'm practically back to my old self 🙏🏽. God is good.
Great video! It was great hearing stories about the guitars, but also a few about Jim Hall. I noticed in a cut that the Goldtop made an appearance but was not mentioned? Is there any clips of them commenting about it?
Amazing - but you'd think these master players would be conscious enough to not noodle all at the same time lol you can't hear anyone trying the different guitars
Pole pieces are the magnetic "receivers" of guitar pickups that pick up the vibrations of the strings. IE: the first step in transducing the string vibration into electrical energy.
Fun convo but they were allowed to talk over each other waaay too much. At about 27:50 Julian mentions a book author but you can't hear what he says. Would love to know!
My rough guess would be anything by Mick Goodrick. Also Julian doesn't mention his name but Jimmy Wyble has his great book of etudes The Art Of Two Line Improvisation, it says tons about Julian's ability to improve with two part improv. So those two authors. But Julian is the best sponge.
I have the Korean made DeArmond, but they came w two types of pickups unfortunately named either 2k, or 2000s, confusing American guitar players. But this is budget ones (that are good enough for me) they’re playing the real deal.
@@donthomas3529 Julian is playing his Collings which has custom made Ron Ellis Ellisonics… so there are the vintage Dearmonds, and then the 2ks and 2000s you mention. every jazz guitarist: here is my 10.000$ guitar that I am playing though this transistor amp, but first let me turn down the treble so that I have a totally muffled sound as if my strings are completely dead.
Please do another one with Bill Frisell, Nels Cline and Marc Ribot and make it 3 hours long. I will buy 2 pairs of headphones if you do.

Joe Diorio

"Guitar mechanisms" by George Van Eps was mentioned but it may just be "Harmonic mechanisms for guitar" (not sure about the exact title)

That guitar was built by Daniel Slaman, in Den Haag NL

How many times can Julian almost drop an $8k guitar in an hour?
Well to be honest it ain’t 8k for him 😅
Nerdy, interesting and entertaining! 😃
What is the pedal that shifts the pitch?
What are those headphones?
Does anyone recognize which wrist watch Julien Lage is wearing here? Looks great.

LCD-5 and LCD-X

They're guitar players all the same. They can't help themselves lol
What microphone is being used for the interview? Does it have a figure-8 pattern? I'm grateful they're not wearing lav mics.. Sound is really good.
The interview sound is mostly a combo of lav mics (yes, they're wearing them) and the stereo mic on the short stand in front of the musicians.
What headphones are they referring to? Thx!

Julian Lage said Tosin Abasi is amazing. very cool. that would be a good show them together. maybe with TRUM
Incredibly random question but does anyone have any idea what shoes Julian is wearing?
Looks like Gustin blue gum sole low top (can’t see exactly) or one of many similar margom sole sneakers.
My 3 favorite guitarists on the scene today!
I'm sorry to say that, but they should shut the "beep" up and let us hear Julian play.
