Thank you Mick and Dan for such a fun afternoon ☺️ Meeting you two was such a highlight, a memorable day 🎸 Thank you to everyone for all the wonderful comments on this video, too! 💜 A few comments have asked what pick I’m using - I forgot to go down my pick rabbit hole!. This is a 1mm Dunlop Primetone.
Thank you Jocelyn! We’ll echo everyone’s comments here and say that it was a truly enlightening day for us. See you next time - the TPS door is always open! X
Wow. Jocelyn. I am blown away and will now seek to listen whenever I can. Also. I didn’t think I’d see these 2 look as happy and emotional and star struck as they did with Noel Gallagher. However you achieved it. It was special for them and us and thank you for sharing your talent !!!
My initial reaction when hearing this caliber of playing is, "I'm a terrible guitar player..." but eventually that shifts to, "It's incredible that there are people that can do *this* with the same instrument I enjoy playing." Goodness. Thank you for introducing me to Jocelyn!
The key is just being the best you that you can be. Even if you think you suck. Find the thing that’s you and do that thing better than anybody. People want to compare Hendrix and Page which is stupid because Hendrix is the best Hendrix and Page is the best Page and that’s why they succeed. Jack White is the best Jack White. Nobody can be Jack White the way he does.
Great to see Jocelyn! We were TA's together at Michigan State from 2017-19 studying under Randy Napoleon! The Michigan community is cheering Jocelyn on as she becomes a world star. Wonderful!
I'm sorry I didn't photograph this talented young lady when I was "on the scene" in the jazz community in metro Detroit/Michigan/Midwest and Canada. Fortunately, I was able to photograph several faculty, alumni, etc. from Michigan State, Michigan, Wayne State, Oakland U, Cliff Bell's, etc. Those were the days... Chao. Retired Vietnam era veteran, ex Detroiter, expatriate, jazz photographer, etc. currently living in México and Colombia.
Dan & Mick; A wonderful episode! TPS is a comprehensive musical venue that is not pigeon-holed into just pedals, because pedals are a part of the over-all musical experience. Tone was still the name of the game with this episode. Jocelyn brought the tone, her tone for all of us to learn and enjoy from. Best Regards, James
Yay! More jazz please! Jocelyn is brilliant. You guys should try to get Molly Miller if she ever comes across to the UK - another brilliant improvising musician and teacher, and with a unique sound that blends elements of rock. Darn That Dream, which she played around halfway, is a favourite of mine - especially Sonny Rollins version, but the final performance of My Old Flame gave me goosebumps - she has such a rich texture to her voice that lent the song the fragility it needs. Obviously Julian Lage and John Scofield would be the big names, but there are also plenty of brilliant young guitarists in the more contemporary London jazz scene that would be really interesting - Rob Luft would be very cool, for example - his latest album has been very well received. There’s so much great jazz happening in London right now it would be a shame not try to get one of those local players.
A few others to throw into the ring: Jonathan Kreisberg, Gilad Hekselman, Lage Lund, Mike Moreno & Oz Noy for a funkier side of jazz (more blues based fusion). All are AMAZING players
Thank you so much for inviting Jocelyn - it was such an ear opening show. Without pedals. But with much fun and joy. I never heard someone play a C Major scale so intense and loved every tone. Thanks a lot! Cheers!
Brilliant episode. Been following Jocelyn since the pandemic/ 2020. Fantastic that she’s now getting this level of exposure in the guitar community, so well deserved.
Wow, what an epic show. A good reminder to slow down and really listen and hear how your tone changes with even the smallest adjustments to your technique--and with no pedals or effects. I can imagine that very few guitarists ever reach this level of control and detail in their playing.
Absolutely stunned by Jocelyn. When she also started to sing on the same level I was about to lose my mind. Thank you very much for introducing this artist to me. Also a big compliment for the recording quality, those features are raising the bar on every level. Cheers mates.
Wes is my guitar hero. I don’t try to play like him, but he’s by far my favorite. And the language of bebop is very beautiful; sometimes it’s good to slow it down and see how the melodic lines infer the underlying chord progressions. I just recently “discovered” Jocelyn. She’s a wonderful musician, and I could see very early on in this video that she’s also a great teacher. It’s so nice to see younger musicians carrying the torch and adding their own touches. Bravo!
Such a wonderful human, player, and singer. I've watched a thousand guitar videos (probably literally at this point) and never seen one quite like this. Jocelyn, amazing job - such humility coupled with incredible knowledge and playing. Dan and Mick, way to ask great questions and let her shine and do her thing. What a ray of sunshine that was.
Its awesome to see Jocelyn growing and flying, it was yesterday that I met her here in Winnipeg, first close contact at music program at University of Manitoba under Larry's Roy improvisation class, got to saw her and actually asked her to play with me at Hermano's a South American place of great food, drink and of course latin music, anyways, she is playing and singing beautiful. Thank you for the great video.
For me this is one of the best TPS episodes… Yes there are a lot of great episodes; I am moved by the way Dan and Mick showing genuine interest. I believe that is the reason this show is churning fantastic contents out in weekly basis. Many thanks!
I've recently been lucky enough to befriend a classically trained musician and it's so game changing. The old adage of "true wisdom is knowing that you know nothing" is the best gift I've had since I heard the intro to Voodoo Chile or Brighton Rock as a bairn. This is so much additional food for thought.
Ms. Gould thank you so much for sharing some of your thoughts on playing the guitar. Your attention to detail and it's impact on tone and expression is both enlightening and inspiring. Thanks for the lesson pointers to those of us not fortunate enough to be able to pursue music as a career that could pay the bills. 🙂Love the Dunlop Primetone picks too, but normally use the Dunlop Ultex 1mm Jazz picks for their tone.
Three people coming together speaking the same language through their love of music it’s lovely to watch you can see the questions queuing up in mick and dans mind and they can’t wait to ask.
So then she sang....and I was even more amazed and blown away. God has blessed this woman. Thank you Jocelyn for taking the leap from playing for yourself to play for all of us!!
That woody, earthy tone is just fantastic. Have never been that into bebop jazz but I am starting to really like smooth jazzy blues instrumental pieces. Super interesting guest and episode. What a player Jocelyn is!
years ago (50) I discovered jazz in and odd way .. found a cassette tape of Wes Montgomery on the road unwound on my paper my passion for blues .. then I discovered "the blues" and got lost in that pursuit .. listening to Miss Gould has really brought back as interest that I'd lost .. THANK YOU PEDAL MEN and J Gould .. WONDERFUL
She is only going to get better, and better, AND BETTER with age and experience. She's already so amazing. She'll be up there with the likes of Ed Bickert as well. Wonderful person! And a fantastic interview!
There is so much I can relate to in this video. I went from blues to jazz too. Although my entry into jazz was Bossa Nova rather than Wes Montgomery. For me, the samba rhythm is what just hooked me. I also had a wonderful teacher who could cross over rock and jazz and who focused on musical theory. He had me focus on horn players, especially Wayne Shorter, to learn melody.
Thanks a lot Jocelyn for your way of holding the guitar. I always struggled between the classical guitar position and the one where the guitar rests entirely on the right leg. After seeing you I tried your way and I am so comfortable with it, I won’t go back!! What a great feel. I only have my strap attached to the headstock (like Lonnie Johnson) because for the few times I stand up playing I would not have to press the guitar to counter it’s tendency to fall forward (the low e string tending to be further away from my body than the high e string, so i can’t see the fretboard any more). I am so much more comfortable playing now, Thanks.
What a sublime episode! So tasteful and melodic. Thank you to Jocelyn for sharing so much in this interview, and to Michael Watts and the team for helping put it all together!
Thanks guys. I don't listen to Jazz very often but I always appreciate it. It's a great reminder of just how far I have to go with these infernal hunks of wood!
All everything I would say has been spoken. But I love how Jocelyn smiles when she plays! ❤ She and others experience joy from the beauty of her playing. You can also see it on Mick and Dan’s faces, and me all the way in Missouri, USA. And, it’s wonderful! Great episode and guest!
You know what, Guys? The nicest thing in this episode (and many others) is your complete humility. It`s one thing to be a guitar tech nerd-geek-kind of thing. But Dan starts there, then Mick gets it. And it's like-"Hang on, there is something more here" and joins in. It's just beautiful.
Dan and Mick, I always look forward to the show on Friday mornings because I never know where you guys are going to take us. Great show with Jocelyn today. Wonderfully recorded songs and engaging Interview. Jocelyn's enthusiasm for jazz is contagious! One thing that has helped me get more into jazz harmonies is playing blues in the keys of F, Bb, Eb and Ab. These are the keys more common for brass and woodwinds in jazz and once you get your head around them on the guitar, it really does open you up to more harmonic options.
Jazz guitar to me is trigonometry while rock and blues is fifth grade math. I will always admire the jazz players for their skill and knowledge. Great episode guys. What a humble gal and letting her share so much while you guys stayed quiet was just great
how the flipping-heck does this have 80 dislikes? what's going on? this is great. she's awesome. what am i missing? ***i have "return youtube dislike" extension on anyone wondering***
I live in Toronto, and this is the third time I’ve been switched on to an excellent Canadian guitar player via your show (the other two being Joey Landreth and Ariel Posen). Great show and thanks for keeping Canucks on your rotation!
Very nicely done, Mick and Dan! This is why TPS continues to be one of my favorite channels. I do hope you'll have Jocelyn on again, she's delightful as well as talented. It would be fun to let her have a go at some pedals, yes?
Tellement talentueuse j’aime cette artiste depuis que je l’ai découverte je ne me lasse pas de l’écouter c’est un plaisir de l’entendre jouer son humilité et son sourire reflète Jocelin’s . Merci ❤
I was not a great Jazz fan until now, but that has changed - wow, what a great player and singer she is. Thanks a lot Mike and Dan and Jocelyn for this great show.
Can we get a subseries about starting jazz? Apart from my own benefit, I want to see the day when Mick makes casual remarks about applications of theory and the harmonics of augmented chords while rolling off a Fuzz Face circuit.
What an inspiration! I have struggled with getting an even tone from my RH fingers. Now I feel so much better after hearing her discuss it. And pick angle ... like others, I realized the difference angles and positions make. It's more prominent with her superb equipment, but one can hear differences even with more modest gear.
When Jocelyn talks about the instrument being the only instrument that can emulate a voice that resonates with me because I’ve always thought that way when i play usually poorly but that’s my main thought , to be musical and conversational , great show men of the boards great full to get to hear these type of players… simply put thank you
What a fantastic interview. So interesting for us "non-jazzers" who appreciate Jazz. Not only is she a tremendous guitar player, articulate, great charm and poise etc ......but she can really sing as well - Wow.
My mind is blown; that was achingly beautiful. It really made my morning a great one watching whlie I sipped my coffee. Thank you Mick & Dan, and Jocelyn for the upload.
This was a lovely episode. I particularly enjoyed how she navigates a wide array aspects of playing and providing a relatable point of reference for everyone. Her sound and playing is really beautiful, I really enjoyed it. What a tone and phrasing! To what was said I would add that for someone trying to get into jazz guitar going through a method would provide some focus. It is not a question of learning all at once but starting with something. “Zvonimir Tot’s Jazz Guitar Harmony” is good to develop a concept of how to comp, so it is Steve Kahan’s “Guitar Khancepts volume 1” and “Joe Pass on Guitar”
Beautiful playing segment at the end and Jocelyn’s voice sounds lovely. The recording excellently served the artist. Surely all the acoustic diffusion of the pedal lined walls and guitar headstocks contributed to the sound vibe! ❤
Another great episode! Jocelyn is amazing - her playing and talent are immensely impressive! So great to see another talented Canadian on the show! Ok, early morning coffee is kicking in and I'm gonna get nerdy... one of the things that really leapt out at me is Jocelyn's picking technique and her use of trailing edge picking which I believe she attributes to George Benson's picking style. I've watched Troy Grady's videos on the subject of edge picking (in my futile attempt to get faster at alternate picking, haha) and it's interesting to see how a lot of rock guitarists use leading edge picking vs trailing edge and curious if this (trailing edge) is a taught jazz picking technique. Also looks like Jocelyn is holding the pick with index and middle finger which I also find interesting. And by shear coincidence or algorythmic timing more likely, after watching this episode, came across a RUclipsr's video (Nathan Borton) on the subject of George Benson's Speed Secrets and his picking technique is identical (I think he might also be playing a Benedetto too!). Anyhow, enough about picking technique! Music and guitar are such wonderful joys in life and we are fortunate to get to experience them in many forms.
What a remarkably talented musician, and where jazz is not my wheelhouse, makes it sound really intriguing and beautiful and I appreciated it - great episode! 😊
thank you for the Wes Montgomery album referral I've been wondering where to start with him. after hearing he and jimmy smith play on "further adventures..." I've tried to keep an ear open for Wes on our local jazz radio but life gets in the way and sometimes you forget... I also will be checking out Jocelyns work!
Dan! Mick! For the love of god, please have a reserved spot for this amazing educator, player and singer when she’s next in town. Stellar upload. Thank you.
Thank you thank you Jocelyn. 21:56 is a stride I was vibing! :)...and all of it too of course. Without listening to the build into that jam, the spirit is not as bright. Well done!
Amazing. I’m starting to finally delve into jazz guitar with my singing partner. This video came by at exactly the right time. Thank you for being prescient.
From Noel Gallagher to Jocelyn Gould, the diversity of this show is brilliant. This was a superb episode and incredibly inspiring too. Thank you TPS crew and Jocelyn for making it happen!
Id love one of these guitars. Ive never heard a bad sounding one. Come to think of it, those who have one (that ive seen) they're all fantastic gutarists! No exception here! One day, i hope to be good enough to do it justice. Still learning ..... and saving 💷 😊👏🏾🎵
"late starter" "my brother taught me power chords and my world changed" "no one else but you", 5 minutes in and this is already the interview I resonate most with, thanks so much
Thank you Mick and Dan for such a fun afternoon ☺️ Meeting you two was such a highlight, a memorable day 🎸 Thank you to everyone for all the wonderful comments on this video, too! 💜 A few comments have asked what pick I’m using - I forgot to go down my pick rabbit hole!. Mind blown, guitar skills on another planet and then……..that voice 😮
Amazing talent and personality. Was great to watch you perform. I have been down a 10 year rabbit hole with picks myself. Thanks again.
I just haven't managed to forget that no matter how incomprehensible what I'm hearing, there's a tear drop rolling down my left cheek 🎵
Wow. Jocelyn. I am blown away and will now seek to listen whenever I can. Also. I didn’t think I’d see these 2 look as happy and emotional and star struck as they did with Noel Gallagher. However you achieved it. It was special for them and us and thank you for sharing your talent !!!
Jocelyn is my professor at Humber College she rips so hard on guitar and a super lovely person
Me? Envy you? No… not at all 🙈
Thats so cool!!!
Ha! I was looking for another humber cat… now we will sit here in RUclips anonymity mwuahahaha…
My initial reaction when hearing this caliber of playing is, "I'm a terrible guitar player..." but eventually that shifts to, "It's incredible that there are people that can do *this* with the same instrument I enjoy playing." Goodness. Thank you for introducing me to Jocelyn!
Very well said Tyler. I feel exactly the same way, it’s almost liberating in fact.
Couldn’t have said it better

Amen..I have same sentiment...Thanks for introducing her to us that are unfamiliar
same! We're all on the journey together.

Can't thank Dan, Mick, and the crew, and especially Jocelyn, enough. What a hugely inspirational episode.
Is that you Chiam ?

Great suggestion! Martin Taylor would also be an interesting feat
I second the Molly Miller suggestion. She is terrific.
I should have led with how great this show was. Fabulous and educational.
Julian Lage was my bridge
A few others to throw into the ring: Jonathan Kreisberg, Gilad Hekselman, Lage Lund, Mike Moreno & Oz Noy for a funkier side of jazz (more blues based fusion). All are AMAZING players
Always great to see a little Jazz representation!
My 16 year old daughter just walked in the room, caught about 1 second of Jocelyn playing and said, "That's going to make Dan cry."
Fantastic interview, Mick and Dan. And this episode instantly made me a Jocelyn Gould fan.
Thank you so much for inviting Jocelyn - it was such an ear opening show. Without pedals. But with much fun and joy. I never heard someone play a C Major scale so intense and loved every tone. Thanks a lot! Cheers!
Absolutely wonderful idea of having Jocelyn on. Such a departure from your usual discussions, but also so apt and appropriate. She's a gem!
Brilliant episode. Been following Jocelyn since the pandemic/ 2020. Fantastic that she’s now getting this level of exposure in the guitar community, so well deserved.
Thank you for bringing her music to us-thoroughly enjoyed-couldn’t help smiling being surprised as she started singing-beautiful.

@@ThatPedalShow - aw! Thanks for the response! Love you guys! I have learned so much from you both.
WOW! Jocelyn is amazing! It's like having Joe Pass and Ella all put into one person. This video made my day! Thank you Mick and Dan!
Yes, when I saw her holding the guitar, I immediately thought of Joe Pass!
Wonderful change of pace for the show. Her enthusiasm is infectious.
I'm not a fan of jazz myself, but it is great to see someone who is very proficient at it. I can just sit back, watch admire and learn.😃
Best interview in years. Jocelyn is a true artist and an incredible musicians. Thanks!
Dang she’s very well spoken, charming, hell of a player AND hell of a singer, great stuff!
Three people coming together speaking the same language through their love of music it’s lovely to watch you can see the questions queuing up in mick and dans mind and they can’t wait to ask.
It's so nice to see the emotion behind these sessions.
This is the best episode I have ever seen of this show. More please!
The future of jazz is very secure and in the hands of young masters such as Jocelyn. Great show, gents.
Bring in more jazz artists when possible.

Just wow! Thank you so much for continually exposing us to amazing artists and just mesmorising playing....oh and what a voice!!
Is this the first TPS episode with no drive pedal?
Wonderful episode, Dan and Mick, thanks for bringing Jocelyn to the show!
She is only going to get better, and better, AND BETTER with age and experience. She's already so amazing. She'll be up there with the likes of Ed Bickert as well. Wonderful person! And a fantastic interview!
You guys are killing it on this one. Such a fun and informative episode. Jocelyn is a wonderful guest. 🤘
This is why we all love the guitar. That you can go from this to Rabea via Joey and Johnny and Noel. No other instrument can delight in so many ways.
THIS! Thank you. :0)
She’s phenomenal, a friendship with Joey Landreth must be a gift that really keeps on giving.
For Joey! 😂
So fascinating throughout but her voice and playing at the end was simply stunning. Great job gents and thank you ever so much to Jocelyn!
Thanks a lot Jocelyn for your way of holding the guitar. I always struggled between the classical guitar position and the one where the guitar rests entirely on the right leg. I come away form most jazz guitar videos on youtube feeling mortified and demoralized. This video has me inspired. Great job, Jocelyn!
Always super cool to see more and more jazz out in the wild these days!
Thanks for giving her a platform to spread the good word to more people!

WHAT A NAME!!!!
I was not a great Jazz fan until now, but that has changed - wow, what a great player and singer she is. Thanks a lot Mike and Dan and Jocelyn for this great show.

This was just brilliant! Thank you Mick and Dan for introducing Jocelyn and her wonderful performing and thougts, greetings from Finland!
I was very excited about this presentation. Thank you.
What a fantastic interview. So interesting for us "non-jazzers" who appreciate Jazz. Not only is she a tremendous guitar player, articulate, great charm and poise etc ......but she can really sing as well - Wow.
Her personality and love of the instrument is both infectious and endearing! Great video (and production)!

Simply wonderful, inspiring, beautiful. Thank you.
Outstanding. Thank you!
That was lovely and please have her back on soon! Thanks, as always. I love your show.
Your best episode ever! 👏👏
That signing voice at the end was perfect to mark the end of a workweek and the start of the weekend. 😊
she is a true delight, in every way !!!
What a remarkably talented musician, and where jazz is not my wheelhouse, makes it sound really intriguing and beautiful and I appreciated it - great episode! 😊
What a lovely person she seems and what a player too. The sound of her voice in the song at the end is simply sublime.
Holy Moly! That closing was heavenly! THX so much for that gift.
thank you for the Wes Montgomery album referral I've been wondering where to start with him. after hearing he and jimmy smith play on "further adventures..." I've tried to keep an ear open for Wes on our local jazz radio but life gets in the way and sometimes you forget...

What an amazing show. Definitely challenging me to become a better musician. Color outside the line a little more. Love it!!!
"late starter" "my brother taught me power chords and my world changed" "no one else but you", 5 minutes in and this is already the interview I resonate most with, thanks so much
